BRIELLA.

Morning came far too early.

I was tired as hell because my body had been too keyed-up for any type of good rest last night. It had taken forever to actually fall asleep after I got back from Tala's run—too long spent replaying what happened at the lake. The peacefulness. The shadows.

But most of all, it was him.

A familiar set of brown eyes had appeared in my dreams, holding me captive even when he did nothing in particular. And that was the real problem. Something inside of me was still shaken, still restless, still hung up on him.

The blaring of an alarm clock shattered the half-asleep state I’d been in. It was silenced after two half-hearted attempts but didn’t end up as a casualty of war this time.

Silver linings and all.

A deep groan left my lips before I dragged myself out of bed and into motion. Autopilot was always a useful setting that got my ass up and going.

Dressing up had never really been my thing, never finding the importance of it. As long as I had clothes on, I was good to go. My jeans were worn, but comfortable. The graphic tee that I chose had been one of my prized possessions for years. It had some of my favorite quotes scrawled across the front.

I couldn’t help but grimace at the reflection that I caught in the mirror. There were dark circles underneath my blue eyes that looked duller than usual. Leaving my curly brown hair down seemed like the best distraction I could come up with. Hopefully, nobody would notice how tired I looked if it framed my face just right.

The cold Autumn air greeted me the moment that I stepped outside. The warm jacket that I grabbed blocked out the cold, which was good because there looked like there was a storm on the horizon. It wasn’t uncommon this time of year. I shoved my hands into my jacket pockets and started walking. It was a damn good thing that the school wasn’t too far away. Ten minutes later, I reached the busy parking lot. Music was already pouring out of the rolled-down windows as people socialized with each other.

“Boo!” Cassie’s voice took me by surprise.

She stood there, looking as flawless as ever. Her perfectly styled blonde hair didn’t have a single hair out-of-place even though it was still so early in the morning. Her signature smile curled on ruby-red lips.

I gasped, pretending to be startled.

Cassie laughed at my lame attempt and was completely unbothered. We were cousins on our mother’s side. Between her and her twin brother, Damon, they were the only cousins I had. And really, the only family that mattered.

She was the opposite of me. I preferred quiet, whereas she was born for attention. Not in a bad way, though. I could easily imagine her as a leader, as someone who made a difference in this world. Still, she never treated me like an afterthought. If anything, it was her mission to make sure that I experienced life instead of it just rushing by me.

“Wow. What kind of night did you have? Must’ve been fun.”

“If by that you mean not really sleeping, then sure,” I deadpanned, slinging my backpack higher up my shoulder.

She grinned, clearly not buying it. Cassie was from a long line of trackers, so she could easily sniff out a secret faster than most could. The look in her eyes warned me she was about to figure out what went on, but thankfully I was saved from that by a very recognizable whine.

Cassie groaned under her breath. “And the beast awakens.”

Sure enough, Marcia was standing in the normal morning spot at the end of the hallway. Perfect hair, perfect clothes, perfect smile. All of it was meticulously crafted to ensure that every eye was on her. If only she also had the perfect personality or at least a tolerable one. The normal followers clustered around her, laughing at whatever she said. Knowing her, it wasn’t even funny. That group was the A-listers, this school’s self-proclaimed royalty.

I heard his low chuckle before I saw him.

Marcia's manicured hands looped around Ryder's arm, her body angled into his like she owned him. My stomach dropped. His laugh was for her. It made my chest ache in a way I couldn't afford to feel.

I looked away, suddenly very interested in the contents of my bag.

Cassie side-eyed me and sighed. “You’ve really need to stop torturing yourself.”

I forced a tight smile. “Yeah. Working on it.”

But the truth was, I wasn’t. Not even close.

“Working on what?” Damon asked, surprising us both.

“Girly shit,” Cassie told him, flipping her hair over her shoulder.

That was one thing that I loved about her. She’d never betray my secrets. It wasn’t even one that I’d intentionally shared with her or anything. She’d figured it out all on her own.

Damon snorted but didn’t press. That was one of his best qualities. He never dug where he wasn’t wanted. He allowed others to open up to him instead of demanding it.

Cassie and I walked together while she chatted, and I attempted to focus on anything other than brown eyes and Marcia’s smug little grin. The classroom was already filling up when we slipped into our seats towards the back. There was a lot of excitement surrounding the upcoming football game, which I blocked out. Sports weren’t really my thing.

Mrs. Clover called for everyone’s attention. “Alright everyone! This next assignment is worth forty-five percent of your grade as part of your college-prep track and will be done in pairs.”

I exhaled quietly and prayed to the Goddess that Cassie’s name would come after mine. At least then I knew that we’d get it done right. Sadly, luck had never really been on my side.

“Evan and Marcia.”

A strand of glossy hair twirled around Marcia’s finger, who was clearly pleased with her partner. Not surprising because she knew that he’d carry the load for her. Evan was in line for Salutatorian this year.

It was wishful thinking that I had somehow slipped by the roll unnoticed.

“Briella Hart.”

Instantly, a few heads turned. Before she could say the name of my partner, Marcia’s voice cut through the room.

“Oh, come on,” she said, feigning a pout. “Do you really need to bother, Mrs. Clover? Nobody would be caught dead partnering with her.”

The class erupted in laughter, making my cheeks burn.

Before I could even think to defend myself, Cassie was on her feet.

“Funny,” she said loudly enough for everyone to hear, “I was just thinking the same thing about your personality. I doubt anyone would be caught dead partnering with that unless forced to. Oh, oops.”

The laughter this time was different. Sharper, delighted, and aimed right back at Marcia. It was her turn for color to flood her cheeks.

Oh, how the tables had turned.

Cassie’s signature hair toss was perfectly timed as she shot me a wink and sat back down in her seat as if she owned the room.

“Problem solved,” she whispered, making me bite back a laugh.

I was so damn thankful for her. Cassie always knew exactly how to draw blood without ever lifting a finger. And honestly? I was a little in awe of her for it.

We spent the rest of the class working on our project while all some people could talk about was the Full Moon Festival that was happening this weekend. It was one of the biggest events of the year that had begun to honor those who came before us, who made this pack into what it was by blood and loyalty. Most people went all out for the formal event. It wasn’t just a casual gathering or anything. For some, it was about hope. For others, legacy. It was about belonging.

There was a part deep inside me that whispered something about this year that would change everything.

  • The Darkness Between Us   Chapter 13

BRIELLA.My head was spinning. Not from the kiss itself, though that alone would have been enough to shake me. Something foreign and hot threaded through my blood, pulsing in time with my heartbeat. With it came questions I couldn't silence fast enough. Was this real? Was he reacting to me, or to the bond that fate tied us together with?Did Ryder actually want Briella, the girl who was the opposite of him, or was he just craving whatever the bond had decided for him?I tried to quiet them. I pressed the questions down, buried them beneath the weight of his gaze. Because the way he was looking at me right now…those half-lidded eyes, his tight jaw, had me feeling something I'd never felt before. Something that didn't have a name I knew.Mated people had tried to explain it before. The bond is overwhelming, they'd say. Intense. Powerful. Like nothing else. But none of those words came close. This was all-consuming. Every nerve ending blazed. Every breath I drew came back saturated with h

BRIELLA. When he kissed me, I wasn’t ready.I had time to pull back. I had time to laugh it off or change the subject or stand up and put distance between us. I did none of those things. His palm settled warm against my cheek, and then his mouth was on mine, and every thought I had been organizing for the past hour scattered like papers in a gust of wind.I had been kissed exactly zero times before that moment. I had imagined it, of course. Vague, soft-focused daydreams that bore no resemblance to the reality of Ryder's lips pressing firm and certain against my own. The mate-bond lit up between us like a current completing a circuit. Sparks raced across my skin wherever he touched me, and my nerve endings fired in a cascade that made every moment before this one feel like I had been living underwater.A voice in my head, thin and rational, said to stop. Said this was too fast. Said I should slow down, breathe, think. That voice had always been the one I listened to. It had kept me car

RYDER. Her eyes widened. For a heartbeat, she simply stared at me, and I watched the emotions flicker across her face like shadows. Surprise, first. Then uncertainty that made my chest tighten. Her gaze searched mine with an intensity that felt like being seen all the way through.I could practically hear the questions that were undoubtedly running through her mind. 'Does he mean it. Is this just the bond. If I say yes, what happens after? What if this is real and I'm not enough? What if it's not real and I let myself believe anyway?'The silence between us lingered, delicate and heavy.I held her gaze and waited, forcing myself not to move, not to lean closer, not to do anything that might feel like pressure. This had to be her choice. Completely, entirely hers.No assumptions. No expectations.Just a question hanging in the space between us.Her throat bobbed as she swallowed hard. A blush spread slowly across her cheeks, painting her skin that soft shade of pink I was quickly becom

RYDER. "...and then Cassie had the audacity to hand me a microphone."I leaned back against the loveseat, already grinning because I could tell exactly where this story was headed."She didn't.""Oh, she absolutely did." Briella covered her face with one hand, groaning dramatically. "She told the DJ it was my birthday.""I'm guessing that it wasn't your birthday.""Nope!" she said, popping the p, and smiling fondly at the memory."So, everyone thought they were celebrating you?""Worse. They started chanting my name."I lost it. The sound of my own laughter filled the room, and judging by the way Briella dissolved into giggles herself, neither of us had any hope of recovering anytime soon."I panicked," she managed between breaths. "I was trying to escape through the emergency exit when Cassie physically shoved me onto the stage."My stomach hurt from laughing. I hadn't laughed this hard in a long time."That's what cousins are for," I told her, thinking about my own cousins."She's l

BRIELLA.The moment Ryder's hand cupped my cheek, the world ceased to exist. Warmth exploded across my skin from the mate-bond sparks. It felt powerful yet comforting, overwhelming yet calming. I had never felt anything so intense before. The sensation stole every coherent thought from my mind. All I could feel was him. His hand against my skin. The warmth of his body standing so close to mine. The rich cocoa and spice scent wrapping around me like a blanket I never wanted to leave. My eyes fluttered closed for the briefest moment. His presence felt utterly intoxicating. Not in the way people often described attraction. This felt like finding something I hadn't even realized was missing. Like a piece of me had been wandering through life incomplete and had suddenly found its way home.A soft involuntary breath escaped me.No matter how much I tried to imagine what finding a mate might feel like, nothing could have prepared me for this. Stories didn't do it justice. People talked about

RYDER.The silence stretched between us like a living thing. Not exactly awkward. Just... charged. Electric. All I could focus on was Briella. The way moonlight painted silver highlights through her hair. The way her beautiful eyes remained locked on mine. The way her pulse fluttered wildly beneath the delicate skin of her throat.'Mate,' Axel purred, having the time of his life.I resisted the urge to roll my eyes.'Yes, thank you. I'm well aware.''How come all you're doing is staring? Perhaps try talking to her, dipshit.'My jaw tightened. Axel could be a real asshole sometimes, but he was right. And I couldn't seem to stop.I was the future Alpha of the Crescent Moon Pack. I regularly negotiated disputes between pack members. Could address dozens of wolves at a time without hesitation. Yet somehow, standing in front of one woman had rendered me completely useless.‘She probably thinks you’re weird,’ he whispered as if telling me a secret.‘You’re not helping,’ I snapped.Briella sh

The familiar packhouse gathering hall had been transformed into something beautiful. Soft ivory fabric cascaded from the exposed wo

RYDER.I watched Briella from my spot without her even realizing it. I wasn't certain how she hadn't picked up on my scent yet, but I took it as a temporary blessing because it gave me a minute to think, to consider everything. This turn of events was entirely unexpected and fucking impossible to w

BRIELLA.“Okay. Final verdict time!”Cassie turned towards me with one hand on her hip and the other fanning herself.“Hot enough to make Damon threaten every male within a five-mile radius?”I couldn’t help but laugh. “You’ve definitely achieved that goal.”Her lips curled in a wide grin. Then her

  • The Darkness Between Us   Chapter 1

BRIELLA.The world had a way of reminding me I was nothing. That I didn’t exist. That was what the world had beaten into me over the years. My family. My pack. They whispered and mocked me, always finding different ways to tear me down. They were creative. I had to give them that.
