BRIELLA.

The world had a way of reminding me I was nothing. That I didn’t exist. That was what the world had beaten into me over the years.

My family.

My pack.

They whispered and mocked me, always finding different ways to tear me down. They were creative. I had to give them that. But I survived because it was easier that way. Easier to go unnoticed than to be hurt. At least that was what I forced myself to believe.

“Briella,” Mom slurred quietly.

My eyes squeezed shut as I attempted to, for just one moment, be anywhere else. When I finally looked, there she was—slumped in her favorite chair, a worn blanket draped around her shoulders like she'd forgotten it was there. The bottle of vodka sat on the side table, half-empty, catching the dim light. It took a lot to get werewolves drunk, which was telling. However, some people added wolfsbane to it for it to act quicker.

If it wasn’t drinking, it was taking pills. She claimed it was the only way she could cope with her screwed-up life.

“You’re late again.”

Same shit. Different day.

I didn't look up. There was no point. She noticed the dishes weren't done, noticed when I tracked mud on the kitchen floor, noticed every time I came home past sunset. But she didn't notice the bruises on my ribs from the she-wolves who cornered me in the hallway. Didn't notice I'd stopped eating lunch at school. Didn't notice the scholarship letters hidden under my mattress or the way I flinched when she raised her voice. I had learned that she wasn't someone who could protect me, so I learned how to protect myself. The moment I heard her soft snoring, I slid out the back, trying not to make a sound.

It was peaceful outside, which I took a moment to enjoy.

The hierarchy was simple: if you weren't born into power or warrior bloodlines, you stayed invisible. And invisibility? That was survival.

Let me introduce myself.

Briella Hart — almost eighteen, senior year, and the girl everyone overlooked unless they needed homework help. I was a bookworm, and I owned it. I loved getting lost in other universes, other lives. But more than that, I loved having control. Knowing exactly where I was headed.

Kensington University was my escape route. I'd worked my ass off for a full-ride scholarship, and I wasn't stopping until I had it. This wasn't just about education. It was about building a life on my own terms. One where I didn't have to hide or hear about what a disappointment I was.

I wasn't one of those girls chasing power or rank or mates. I wanted autonomy first. Everything else could wait.

So for now, I kept my head down and prepared for the future. One that'd be as far away from this place as possible.

Fate, like Karma, was a mighty fine wench. But we’d get to that later on.

'How about we go for a run,' Tala suggested hopefully.

She gave me a wolfish grin, dancing from paw to paw in my mind. I felt her presence bloom inside me. The familiar warmth was the closest thing I had to unconditional love. She was the one constant in my life that never failed, and I absolutely adored her. Loyal. Fierce. Ever the optimist with that glass-half-full kind of personality. And beautiful too! Sleek gray fur and cobalt-blue eyes that carried themselves like royalty. Proud. Unshaken. Wild.

A run sounded perfect. She wanted the exercise, and I needed the escape.

I made my way to the covered overhang behind the house, where I could undress in private. Clothes were casualties of shifting. That was one of the downsides of being a werewolf compared to some other shifters whose clothes reappeared on their bodies when they shifted back. If only we'd be that lucky.

I shed my clothes and let the change take over.

Tala emerged with a deep arch to her back, her claws digging into the ground as the shift completed. The cool breeze whipped past her as she took off running, that familiar freedom flooding through her body. Wolves loved the speed, the power, the wildness of it all.

After running hard for a while, she detoured and headed over to Moorehead Lake. It was a bit off the trail and not the most popular place in our territory. However, it was the most beautiful one. The bright moon reflected off its smooth surface, and the refreshing water soothed her parched throat.

Goddess, it was incredibly peaceful out here, which was why we always came to this spot.

The sound of something moving inside the treeline made her ears twitch. It was soft but undeniable. Her body remained still as she pretended to be none the wiser, wanting to know who the culprit was. Her peripheral vision caught the movement. At first, it took a moment to zone in on him because of how perfectly his black fur blended into the shadows. Well, how almost perfectly. Rich black fur covered a body that was ripped with pure muscle. His presence radiated authority and power, which was common for Alpha-blooded individuals. It demanded attention and accepted nothing less.

Neither of them moved at first. A new tension thrummed in the air, and not one that we were used to. He’d never paid mind to Tala before, but the way his copper eyes looked over her, as if drinking in her presence, filled her with butterflies.

Ryder Landon, his human, always caused me the same butterflies even though I’d never admit it out loud. I had carried around a secret for years about Ryder. One that I’d sworn to carry to the grave. I had a crush on him. A hopeless, ridiculous one.

It was stupid, really. I knew it. I’d attempted to dismiss repeatedly but had no such luck.

Ryder was the Alpha heir of this pack. Untouchable. Commanding. He was the guy whom people noticed the moment he entered the room. Almost everyone either wanted to be him or be with him.

And me? I was the exact opposite.

He could have first pick of the hordes of she-wolves who flocked around him. They were the ones who’d do anything for even an ounce of his attention. Who used their beauty as a weapon and went after what they wanted without pause. The kind who belonged in his world.

It always played out the same way, leaving me to pretend that my heart didn’t speed up each time he looked at me. Or how I secretly wished it’d linger.

The sound of him moving towards us brought our attention back to the present. His eyes remained fixed on Tala as if she were the only thing he cared to look at. Her entire body stiffened and looked at him for another moment, feeling some unease mixed with curiosity.

Then she turned around and dashed off, leaving him behind.

Long gone was the calm serenity that we’d been feeling. The weight of his stare remained even after he was no longer present. There was no telling what he wanted, or if he wanted anything at all. Axel had never approached us before, just as his human hadn’t. Ryder Landon had never looked at me. Not once in all the years that I'd harbored this stupid, hopeless crush. I was invisible to him, just as I was invisible to everyone else.

But Axel had looked at Tala. Really looked. And that changed everything.

Neither of us could shake the feeling that something had shifted tonight as she ran away…

  • The Darkness Between Us   Chapter 13

BRIELLA.My head was spinning. Not from the kiss itself, though that alone would have been enough to shake me. Something foreign and hot threaded through my blood, pulsing in time with my heartbeat. With it came questions I couldn't silence fast enough. Was this real? Was he reacting to me, or to the bond that fate tied us together with?Did Ryder actually want Briella, the girl who was the opposite of him, or was he just craving whatever the bond had decided for him?I tried to quiet them. I pressed the questions down, buried them beneath the weight of his gaze. Because the way he was looking at me right now…those half-lidded eyes, his tight jaw, had me feeling something I'd never felt before. Something that didn't have a name I knew.Mated people had tried to explain it before. The bond is overwhelming, they'd say. Intense. Powerful. Like nothing else. But none of those words came close. This was all-consuming. Every nerve ending blazed. Every breath I drew came back saturated with h

BRIELLA. When he kissed me, I wasn’t ready.I had time to pull back. I had time to laugh it off or change the subject or stand up and put distance between us. I did none of those things. His palm settled warm against my cheek, and then his mouth was on mine, and every thought I had been organizing for the past hour scattered like papers in a gust of wind.I had been kissed exactly zero times before that moment. I had imagined it, of course. Vague, soft-focused daydreams that bore no resemblance to the reality of Ryder's lips pressing firm and certain against my own. The mate-bond lit up between us like a current completing a circuit. Sparks raced across my skin wherever he touched me, and my nerve endings fired in a cascade that made every moment before this one feel like I had been living underwater.A voice in my head, thin and rational, said to stop. Said this was too fast. Said I should slow down, breathe, think. That voice had always been the one I listened to. It had kept me car

RYDER. Her eyes widened. For a heartbeat, she simply stared at me, and I watched the emotions flicker across her face like shadows. Surprise, first. Then uncertainty that made my chest tighten. Her gaze searched mine with an intensity that felt like being seen all the way through.I could practically hear the questions that were undoubtedly running through her mind. 'Does he mean it. Is this just the bond. If I say yes, what happens after? What if this is real and I'm not enough? What if it's not real and I let myself believe anyway?'The silence between us lingered, delicate and heavy.I held her gaze and waited, forcing myself not to move, not to lean closer, not to do anything that might feel like pressure. This had to be her choice. Completely, entirely hers.No assumptions. No expectations.Just a question hanging in the space between us.Her throat bobbed as she swallowed hard. A blush spread slowly across her cheeks, painting her skin that soft shade of pink I was quickly becom

RYDER. "...and then Cassie had the audacity to hand me a microphone."I leaned back against the loveseat, already grinning because I could tell exactly where this story was headed."She didn't.""Oh, she absolutely did." Briella covered her face with one hand, groaning dramatically. "She told the DJ it was my birthday.""I'm guessing that it wasn't your birthday.""Nope!" she said, popping the p, and smiling fondly at the memory."So, everyone thought they were celebrating you?""Worse. They started chanting my name."I lost it. The sound of my own laughter filled the room, and judging by the way Briella dissolved into giggles herself, neither of us had any hope of recovering anytime soon."I panicked," she managed between breaths. "I was trying to escape through the emergency exit when Cassie physically shoved me onto the stage."My stomach hurt from laughing. I hadn't laughed this hard in a long time."That's what cousins are for," I told her, thinking about my own cousins."She's l

  • The Darkness Between Us   Chapter 9

BRIELLA.The moment Ryder's hand cupped my cheek, the world ceased to exist. Warmth exploded across my skin from the mate-bond sparks. It felt powerful yet comforting, overwhelming yet calming. I had never felt anything so intense before. The sensation stole every coherent thought from my mind. All I could feel was him. His hand against my skin. The warmth of his body standing so close to mine. The rich cocoa and spice scent wrapping around me like a blanket I never wanted to leave. My eyes fluttered closed for the briefest moment. His presence felt utterly intoxicating. Not in the way people often described attraction. This felt like finding something I hadn't even realized was missing. Like a piece of me had been wandering through life incomplete and had suddenly found its way home.A soft involuntary breath escaped me.No matter how much I tried to imagine what finding a mate might feel like, nothing could have prepared me for this. Stories didn't do it justice. People talked about

  • The Darkness Between Us   Chapter 8

RYDER.The silence stretched between us like a living thing. Not exactly awkward. Just... charged. Electric. All I could focus on was Briella. The way moonlight painted silver highlights through her hair. The way her beautiful eyes remained locked on mine. The way her pulse fluttered wildly beneath the delicate skin of her throat.'Mate,' Axel purred, having the time of his life.I resisted the urge to roll my eyes.'Yes, thank you. I'm well aware.''How come all you're doing is staring? Perhaps try talking to her, dipshit.'My jaw tightened. Axel could be a real asshole sometimes, but he was right. And I couldn't seem to stop.I was the future Alpha of the Crescent Moon Pack. I regularly negotiated disputes between pack members. Could address dozens of wolves at a time without hesitation. Yet somehow, standing in front of one woman had rendered me completely useless.‘She probably thinks you’re weird,’ he whispered as if telling me a secret.‘You’re not helping,’ I snapped.Briella sh

BRIELLA.The moment Cassie and I stepped into the gathering hall, every instinct I possessed screamed at me to turn around and leave. It was almost unrecognizable here. The familiar packhouse gathering hall had been transformed into something beautiful. Soft ivory fabric cascaded from the exposed wo

RYDER.I watched Briella from my spot without her even realizing it. I wasn't certain how she hadn't picked up on my scent yet, but I took it as a temporary blessing because it gave me a minute to think, to consider everything. This turn of events was entirely unexpected and fucking impossible to w

BRIELLA.“Okay. Final verdict time!”Cassie turned towards me with one hand on her hip and the other fanning herself.“Hot enough to make Damon threaten every male within a five-mile radius?”I couldn’t help but laugh. “You’ve definitely achieved that goal.”Her lips curled in a wide grin. Then her

  • The Darkness Between Us   Chapter 3

BRIELLA.My cousin had been on a one-woman mission all week, and I was her primary target. She was determined to execute a full-blown shopping trip that'd most likely include sparkles, sequins, makeup, and other torture devices designed specifically to make me squirm. Why? The Full Moon Festival, o
