Chapter 1

The nurse nearby handed Nathan Lloyd the surgical consent form. "We need a family member to sign the papers before the operation. What's your relationship with the woman in labor?"

Nathan took the pen and signed with trembling hands. "She's my wife."

A lump formed in my throat when I heard it. The image that flashed through my mind was of Nathan smiling and handing me our marriage certificate a month ago. "Jaime Sterling, we're a legally married couple from today on."

As if sensing my stunned expression, Nathan looked up in confusion with his red eyes.

I quickly lowered my head and adjusted the mask over the bridge of my nose to conceal my emotions. Turning around, I pushed open the doors to the operating room. "We'll do everything we can for the patient."

I guessed our relationship was completely over.

After a round of rescue, the mother's condition was relatively stable, and the atmosphere in the operating room became more relaxed.

My colleague beside me whispered to me, "I heard these two got into this mess because they got a little too carried away in bed. The mother is near her due date, yet her husband doesn't seem to be able to control himself. Young people nowadays are really reckless when it comes to romance..."

My hand movements slowed down for a few seconds. The image of Nathan begging at the operating room door just now gradually merged with the Nathan who had gotten down on one knee to propose to me. "Jaime, marry me. I will never touch another woman but you!"

On our wedding night, he carefully helped me put back on each piece of clothing I had taken off, his expression filled with pain and struggle. "I'm sorry, Jaime. I swore at my mother's grave to observe three years of mourning for her. This is the third year. Wait for me a little longer."

I believed him. What I got in return was fighting to save his unborn child.

I gave a mocking smile. It turned out that not touching me was not about observing propriety; it was simply because he did not love me.

The operation concluded quickly and successfully. I held the newborn in my arms. She was not heavy, but her weight pressed against my chest.

When I opened the operating room door, Nathan immediately stood up and rushed over. His bloodshot eyes were filled with barely suppressed worry and anxiety. "How's Viola?"

Viola Harland was the name of the woman in labor on the medical record. Nathan had introduced her as his wife. She was a stranger to me. He had never mentioned her to me before.

I handed the baby to him and said, "Congratulations, the surgery went smoothly. Both mother and daughter are safe."

Nathan's tense expression visibly relaxed, and his gaze toward me was filled with unfamiliar gratitude. "Thank you, doctor. May I ask your name?"

With my cap and mask covering most of my face, Nathan failed to recognize me.

I stared into his eyes, trying to detect a hint of guilt. "My last name is Sterling. Just call me Dr. Sterling."

Nathan frowned and was about to say something more when Viola was wheeled out on a stretcher from behind me.

"Nathan..." She lay on the bed, looking unusually weak.

He immediately pushed me aside and rushed to her. He held the baby in one arm and Viola's hand in the other, his tone gentler than I had ever heard before.

It was baby's breath, which Nathan thought was my favorite. He had gone to the florist early in the morning to order the freshest bunch.Whenever he argued with me in the past, I would forgive him, no matter how serious the mistake was. All he needed to do was hold a bouquet of baby's breath in front of me and admit his mistake. He knew I loved him deeply, which was why he dared to be so unrestrained, even having a child with Viola behind my back. This time, he thought, would be no exception."Let's head inside."When Nathan saw me, he handed over the flowers he was holding. "Jaime, I know my mistake now. I promise I'll end things with Viola completely. Would you please forgive me this time?"The baby's breath bouquet before me was the freshest Nathan had ever given me since we met, but I smiled and did not take it. "Nathan, I don't like baby's breath at all. I always accepted it because it was the first bouquet you ever bought for me. I thought you'd figure it out."Nathan paled

"Sorry, sir. It says here that there's insufficient balance on this card. Please use another card for payment."Nathan started panicking. He threw down all the cards in his wallet at once. "Try these."His bad attitude made the staff at the counter frown, and their tone became a bit unfriendly. "None of them work!"Nathan stood in place, still not giving up. "Is there something wrong with your hospital's system? I just used this card yesterday!"The phone in his pocket vibrated, and he impatiently pressed it against his ear. "What is it? Spill!""Mr. Lloyd, we have a problem! Our biggest investor has withdrawn their investment! The other small investors have also gradually withdrawn. The company is going under!"Nathan widened his eyes, and the sweat on his hands made them so slippery that it was impossible for him to hold his phone. The staff in front of him impatiently tapped the counter. "Sir, please hurry up. There are a bunch of people queuing up behind you!"He was swea

"The homewrecker is the wife?"Viola tightly grasped the handle of the wheelchair with both hands, her eyes fixed on the wedding photo and marriage certificate on the ground. She was trembling all over. "Nathan, what's going on? Tell me these are fake. Right? I'm the one who's legally married to you!"Nathan lowered his head and refused to look at her, remaining silent.Viola completely broke down and viciously pounded Nathan's back. "You lied to me! How could you lie to me?"Nathan hoarsely apologized nonstop. "I'm sorry."He confined the crazy Viola in his arms, preventing her from hurting him. "It's all my fault. I did you wrong."Everyone was shocked to hear this. Those who had condemned me the loudest earlier now looked embarrassed and silently backed away.I coldly watched the two people hugging tightly in front of me, my tone indifferent. "Stop acting, Viola. You must have suspected it long ago."Last night, I had someone check Nathan's purchase records. As expected, h

Viola pointed straight behind her.Following the direction she pointed, Nathan turned around and met my gaze. The food in his hand crashed to the ground and scattered all over.Nathan's pupils contracted suddenly as his expression changed drastically. "Jaime, why are you here?"Viola had thought it was just my own wishful thinking; she never expected Nathan to actually know me.Viola's expression darkened, and her gaze on me became even more hostile. "Nathan, do you know her?"He paled, his gaze at me filled with pleading. "No, I don't."He moved closer to me, ensuring that his voice was only audible to the two of us. "Jaime, bear with me a little longer. Viola just gave birth and can't handle any stress. I beg you. When this is over, I will surely make it up to you."Even though his appearance had not changed, I felt that the Nathan in front of me was unappealing. The nurse who had gone to seek help earlier arrived with the chief physician, Donald Streep. Seeing the scene befo

A smile remained on Viola's lips. "Dr. Sterling, take it."The gift hamper was handed over to me. The person's hand trembled, and a card fell. When I read the words on it, my face instantly turned pale.[How shameless to knowingly become a homewrecker.]Like multiple slaps in the face, those words made my face turn bright red.I trembled all over as I asked coldly, "Ms. Harland, what's the meaning of this?"Viola's attitude completely changed as she looked me up and down. "Nathan isn't here. Cut the act. I noticed yesterday when I came out of the operating room, how your eyes were practically glued to Nathan. We're both women. Don't think I don't know about those shameful ideas in your mind."She deliberately covered her mouth and gagged, her gaze toward me filled with disgust and judgment. "Angel in white? You're always thinking about hooking up with your patients' husbands! How disgusting."I slapped the gift hamper onto the ground and instinctively wanted to refute Viola, bu

"It's much better now. Yesterday was so dangerous. Good thing we have you, Dr. Sterling. I haven't had a chance to thank you yet. As soon as I woke up, I ordered a gift hamper. I hope you'll accept it." I laughed, but my gaze fell on their intertwined hands.Nathan was wearing a strangely shaped ring just like Viola's.Noticing my gaze, Viola turned the ring and explained, her tone filled with happiness, "My husband designed this himself. There's only one pair in the whole world. It's a little ugly, but I like it." I quickly lowered my gaze, hiding the surging emotions in my eyes. The day after our wedding, Nathan took off the wedding ring that I had specially commissioned from a master craftsman. I watched as he sealed it in a box and placed it in the deepest part of the drawer, never to be seen again. "Why not wear it?" He frowned and shook his head. "It's too precious. It would be such a pity if I lost it." I remained silent and took off my own ring, casually tossing it
