The headlights of three idling vehicles cast long shadows across the living room walls. Inside the small house, the air felt stale with the sudden scent of burning wax and rain. Vittoria stood paralyzed, her hand still clutching her mother's trembling shoulder as the front door lock clicked, the wood swinging inward with a low creak.

"We are out of time, Vittoria," Teresa whispered, her voice cracking as she pushed her daughter behind her. "They are here."

"Who is here, Mom?" Vittoria asked, her heart hammering against her ribs. "Is it him?"

The door opened fully, and Enzo stepped into the foyer first, his dark suit immaculate, his hand resting casually on his lapel. Behind him, the towering silhouette of Cassian Marchetti blocked out the cool night air, his dark eyes scanning the room before locking onto Vittoria with a cold, possessive intensity.

"You do not need to hide, sweet girl," Cassian said, his voice smooth and commanding. "Your little suburban game is over."

"Get out of my house," Teresa demanded, her body shaking as she stepped forward. "You have no right to be here. My husband paid his debts to your father eighteen years ago."

"Your husband's debts were paid in blood, Teresa," Cassian replied, taking a slow, predatory step into the living room. "But I am not here for dead men. I am here for what lives."

"You cannot have her," Teresa cried, reaching back to grab Vittoria's arm. "Vittoria, run. Go out the back window."

"There is nowhere to run," Cassian murmured, his gaze never shifting from Vittoria's face. "My men have surrounded the block. Your little escape route through the oak tree is currently occupied by two of my soldiers."

Vittoria stepped out from behind her mother, her chest rising and falling rapidly. "Why are you doing this? You returned my bracelet. You said I could go home."

"I let you go home so you could say goodbye to your mother," Cassian said, his voice dropping to a dark, quiet register. "You are Vittoria Carvelli. You are the last surviving bloodline of the family that tried to burn my empire to the ground."

"I do not know what you are talking about," Vittoria argued, her hands clenching into tight fists at her sides. "I do not even remember my father. I do not care about your empire."

"The elders of my syndicate care," Cassian countered, closing the distance between them until she could smell his scent of expensive leather and cedar. "They are already voting on how to dispose of Salvatore Carvelli's daughter. If I leave you here, you will be dead before sunrise."

"Let us go," Teresa pleaded, dropping to her knees. "We will leave the state. We will change our names again. Just let her live."

"The only way she lives is with me," Cassian demanded, his eyes flashing with a cold fire as he looked down at Teresa. "Enzo, assist the mother. She is being relocated to a secure safehouse in the western district. She will have security, medical attention, and comfort. But she will not contact anyone."

"No!" Vittoria screamed, rushing forward as Enzo took Teresa by the arm. "Do not touch her! You promised you would not threaten me!"

"I am not threatening you, Vittoria," Cassian said, his large hand coming out to catch her by the wrist, pulling her flush against his chest. "I am giving you a choice. Walk out that door with me, and your mother lives in safety. Refuse, and my elders will handle this house their own way. Do you understand what that means?"

Vittoria stared up into his dark eyes, searching for any sign of mercy, but she found only absolute, unyielding control. "You are a monster."

"I am the monster that is keeping you alive," Cassian whispered, his face inches from hers. "Now, make your decision."

Vittoria looked back at her mother, who was sobbing silently into Enzo's shoulder. "I will go with you. Just do not hurt her. Please."

"Your cooperation has purchased her safety," Cassian said, releasing her wrist only to slide his hand down to clasp her fingers. "Let us go."

The ride through the city was silent, the armored SUV moving through the dark streets with absolute speed. Vittoria sat in the back, her eyes fixed on the silver bracelet on her wrist, while beside her, Cassian remained still, his presence feeling like a physical weight pressing down on her chest.

When the vehicle finally stopped, they were standing before a massive stone estate built on the cliffs overlooking the black ocean. The gates were reinforced steel, guarded by armed men who bowed their heads as Cassian walked past.

"Is this my prison?" Vittoria asked, her voice hollow as they entered the grand foyer.

"This is your fortress," Cassian corrected, gesturing to a grand curved staircase. "My housekeeper, Maria, will show you to your quarters. You will find clothing and everything you require. Do not attempt to leave the grounds, Vittoria. The perimeter is alarmed."

"And if I do?" she challenged, her chin rising.

"You will not make it past the first line of defense," Cassian said, his voice quiet. "And I would be forced to punish the guards who let you try. Rest now, sweet girl. Tomorrow, our arrangement begins."

Vittoria turned without another word, following the elderly housekeeper up the stairs. The room she was given was beautiful, decorated in dark silks and gold accents, but when she heard the lock click from the outside, she knew the truth. She was a bird in a golden cage, and the key belonged to the son of the man who killed her father.

The morning sun rose over the ocean, casting bright, cold light through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the suite. When the lock on her door turned, she stood up immediately, her body tense.Cassian entered, carrying a silver tray with a pot of coffee and a single plate of food. He had discarded his jacket, wearing only a white dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up, revealing the dark tattoos that wrapped around his muscular forearms."You did not touch the food Maria brought you last night," Cassian noted, setting the tray on a small table near the window."I do not eat food prepared by my kidnappers," Vittoria replied, her voice cold."You need to maintain your strength, sweet girl," Cassian said, pouring a cup of coffee. "We have a long day ahead of us, and I dislike dealing with weak partners.""Then let me go home," she said, taking a s

She stepped into the quiet living room, her hand instantly going to the silver bracelet on her wrist."Vittoria," a sharp, trembling voice called out from the darkness.Teresa sat in the armchair, the room lit only by the pale light of the television screen. She looked older, her face pale and drawn, her hands clutching a crumpled newspaper."Mom," Vittoria said, trying to keep her voice steady. "Why are the lights off? Is everything alright?""Where were you last night, Vittoria?" Teresa asked, her voice rising to a frantic pitch as she stood up. "And where were you tonight? Do not lie to me. I called your university. They said you left campus hours ago in a black car.""I was just with Hannah, Mom," Vittoria lied, taking a step back as her mother approached. The glass doors of Obsidian opened before Vittoria could even reach for the handle. The club was dark and empty at seven-forty-five, the neon lights pulsing in a slow, hypnotic pattern that scattered across the leather booths."Mr. Marchetti is expecting you, miss," Enzo said, stepping out from the VIP elevator. He gestured for her to enter the glass carriage. "Please, step inside.""Is he alone?" The next morning, the university campus was bustling with students, but Vittoria could barely focus on her notes. She sat at a concrete bench in the courtyard, her eyes repeatedly scanning the empty skin of her left wrist."You have been staring at your wrist for three hours," Hannah noted, setting a cardboard coffee cup in front of her. "Are you still stressing about that bracelet?""It is the only thing I have from my father, Hannah," Vittoria sighed, rubbing her temples. "My mother saved it when we left our old house. If she finds out I lost it at a nightclub, she will know I lied to her.""We can go back to Obsidian this afternoon," Hannah suggested. "Maybe someone turned it in to the lost and found.""I do not think going back there is a good idea," Vittoria whispered, looking around to ensure no one was listening. "That man, Cassian. She glanced back toward the dance floor, but Hannah was completely lost in the sea of moving bodies, laughing and dancing under the flas
