The Walls Have Ears

last update publish date: 2026-07-09 14:19:30

"I thought I was finally alone, but the house is still breathing."

I let the words slip out as I lock the heavy iron door behind me. My private estate is miles from the city, a tomb of stone and glass nestled deep in the woods. I drop my bags, the weight of them dragging me toward the floor. I press my palm to my stomach, feeling the slow, rhythmic roll of the baby. We made it. For now, we are out.

"Aiden?"

I spin around, my heart slamming against my ribs. It’s just Elena, my nurse, standing in the foyer with a tray of medication. She looks at me with those soft, tired eyes that used to make me feel safe. Now, they just look like glass.

"You startled me," I say, my voice raspy. I try to steady my breath, to sink back into the character I have been forced to play. "I didn't expect you to be here tonight."

"Liam asked me to stay," she says, stepping closer. She holds out the plastic cup with the blue pill. "He said you were distressed after the meeting. He’s worried about your heart, Aiden."

I look at the pill. It looks innocent. It looks like a lifeline. I know it’s a leash.

"I don't want it, Elena," I say, my voice low and brittle. "I want to sleep. Just sleep. Without the chemistry."

"You know what happens when you skip a dose," she says, her tone shifting from soft to cold. It’s a snap of a switch. "The tremors come back. The confusion. Do you want to go back to that? Do you want the panic attacks to take over?"

I feel the familiar, sharp bite of anger rising, but I swallow it. I have to be smart. I have to be the sick man they expect. I reach out, taking the cup, and I drop the pill into my palm, pretending to swallow it while hiding it under my tongue.

"There," I say, forcing a smile. "Are you happy now?"

"I’m just doing my job," she whispers, turning to head toward the kitchen. "Get some rest, Aiden. You look like you’re fading."

I wait until I hear her footsteps retreat. I spit the pill into the palm of my hand and drop it into a potted fern. My hands are shaking, but not from the sickness. It is the adrenaline. The pure, intoxicating thrill of being the one who is lying.

I move into my private office. It is the only room in the house I truly trust, or at least, the only room I built with my own hands. I lock the door and slide behind the desk, pulling my laptop from my bag. The screen glows, casting a sickly blue light across the room.

"Okay," I mutter to myself. "Time to finish this."

I start typing, my fingers dancing across the keys, purging the last of my digital breadcrumbs. I am deleting accounts, wiping servers, and rerouting the final, devastating bits of code that will bring Liam’s empire down to the dirt.

"Aiden," a voice says.

I freeze. The voice came from the speaker system. It is distorted, synthesized, and coming from inside the wall.

"Who is that?" I shout, standing up, my chair clattering against the hardwood. "Who is there?"

"You think you’re in control because you left the city," the voice says. It sounds like a ghost. It sounds like a machine. "But you never left the cage."

I grab the fire poker from the hearth. I start tearing at the wallpaper, my lungs burning. My hands are raw, my fingernails bleeding, but I don't stop. I pull until the plaster cracks.

"Where are you?" I scream, my voice cracking with desperation. "Show yourself!"

I rip a panel from the wall, and there it is. A small, black lens, blinking with a tiny red light. It is embedded in the wiring, a parasite feeding on my privacy, listening to every breath I take.

"You’re dead," I hiss at the camera. "You hear me? You are dead."

I smash it with the iron poker. The glass shatters, and the red light goes out. I stand there, chest heaving, the room feeling like a coffin. I have been exposed. Every word, every movement, every secret I thought I had kept... they have it all.

"Aiden? What is that noise?"

Elena is at the door, pounding on the wood. "Open this door right now!"

I scramble to the floor, shoving the laptop under the desk. I grab a book, trying to look like a man who just had a breakdown, a man who is crumbling under the weight of his own mind.

"I'm fine!" I yell, my voice shaking. "I just... I tripped. I fell."

"Open the door, Aiden," she demands. Her voice is different now. It is authoritative. It is the voice of someone who isn't a nurse. "Liam needs to know if you’ve damaged anything."

"I am fine, Elena!" I scream, the fear finally bubbling over into something primal. "Go away!"

"You aren't in charge here," she says, and I hear the unmistakable click of a key in the lock.

She pushes the door open. She isn't alone. Behind her stands a man I have never seen before. He is wearing a dark suit that fits too well, his eyes scanning the room with the clinical detachment of a butcher. He looks at the wall, at the shredded wallpaper, and at the broken camera on the floor.

"He found it," the man says, his voice flat.

"I see that," Elena replies. She doesn't look like a nurse anymore. She looks like a jailer.

"Why are you here?" I ask, clutching the fire poker behind my back. "Who are you?"

"We are the ones who make sure the board’s assets stay protected," the man says, stepping into the room. He looks at me, and for a second, I see it in his eyes. A flash of pity. "Aiden, you were never meant to leave. The leave of absence was just a way to keep you contained."

"You work for Liam," I spit, my heart racing.

"Liam works for the same people we do," the man says, coming closer. "He is just as disposable as you are."

I back away until my heels hit the corner of the room. The baby kicks hard, a jolt of pain that makes me gasp.

"You can't do this," I whisper. "This is my house. I own this."

"You own nothing," Elena says, walking toward me, her hand reaching into her pocket. She pulls out a syringe. "You are just a vessel, Aiden. And the board is very concerned about their investment."

"I will scream," I say, my voice trembling.

"Who will hear you?" the man asks. "The nearest house is ten miles away. The security team has the perimeter locked down. You aren't going anywhere."

"You want the company?" I laugh, a jagged, broken sound. "You want the secrets? They’re gone. I sent them. They’re out in the cloud, and there is nothing you can do to stop it."

The man stops. He looks at the laptop under the desk. He looks at the screen, which is still active.

"You didn't send them," he says, his voice dropping an octave. "You were just about to. But you didn't."

He moves toward the desk, and I leap for him. I swing the poker with everything I have. It connects with his shoulder, a sickening thud of bone, but he barely flinches. He grabs my wrist, his grip like a steel trap, and twists. The poker falls to the floor.

"Aiden, stop!" Elena screams, grabbing my arm. "You’re hurting the baby!"

I freeze. The word "baby" hits me like a physical blow. They know. They know everything.

"We don't want to hurt you," the man says, his voice dropping to a low, soothing tone that feels more terrifying than his threats. "We just want to make sure you stay comfortable. For the duration of the pregnancy."

"You’re going to hold me hostage until it’s born?" I ask, my voice barely a whisper.

"We are going to provide you with the best possible care," Elena says, trying to pull me toward the bed. "Now, sit down. Take your medication."

I look at the broken camera on the floor. I look at the man’s bleeding shoulder. I look at the door. I am trapped. I am completely, utterly alone in a house that belongs to the people who want to drain me dry.

"I won't do it," I say, pulling away. I stumble toward the window, looking out at the dark, desolate woods. "I will burn this house down first."

"You won't," the man says, following me. "Because you know that if you try, we will ensure you never get the chance to hold that child."

He walks to the desk and picks up my laptop. He stares at the screen for a long, agonizing moment. Then, he looks back at me, a cold, predatory smile spreading across his face.

"You thought you were the architect," he says, tapping the keys. "But you’re just the foundation."

He hits a single key. The screen goes black.

"What did you do?" I scream.

"We just reset the board," he says. "And now, it is time for you to go back to sleep."

Elena steps forward, the syringe gleaming in the dim light of the office. I back away, my heart hammering, but there is nowhere left to go. The walls are closing in, and I realize, with a final, terrifying clarity, that I have been a prisoner since the moment I was born.

"Aiden," she says, her voice as gentle as a mother’s, "it’s time."

I look at the syringe. I look at the man. I look at the darkness outside the window, waiting to swallow me whole.

"If you do this," I say, my voice steady for the first time, "I will find a way to kill you all."

The man laughs, a short, sharp sound. "We know you will, Aiden. That’s why we’re going to make sure you never wake up."

The room starts to spin. My legs give out, and I collapse onto the rug, the world blurring into a kaleidoscope of shadows and pain. The last thing I hear is the sound of the front gate opening, and the rumble of a car pulling up to the house.

It isn't Liam.

It is someone else. Someone who is going to finish what he started.

I try to fight, I try to scream, but my body is failing me. I feel the cold, hard floor against my cheek, and the silence rushes back in, heavier than before.

I am falling into the dark. And this time, I don't think there is a way out.

The front door slams open. Footsteps echo through the hall. Heavy, deliberate, and final.

"Aiden?" a voice calls out. It is deep, resonant, and horribly familiar.

It is my father.

And he isn't here to save me.

"I am a masterpiece of artifice, and the truth is the only thing I cannot afford."I hear his footsteps before I see him. They are measured, heavy, and rhythmic. The kind of stride that expects the world to move out of the way. I am curled on the chaise in the conservatory, a thin blanket draped over my legs, my eyes fluttering shut as I hear the door click. I force my breathing to slow, to mimic the shallow, jagged pattern of someone drowning in their own exhaustion."Aiden?"My father’s voice is like grinding stone. I open my eyes, letting them appear glazed, unfocused. I struggle to prop myself up, my hands trembling with a calculated, rhythmic instability."Father? I didn't think you were coming today," I whisper, my voice cracking perfectly. He stands over me, his shadow stretching across the floor tiles. He isn't looking at my face. He is looking at my hands, at the way I grip the blanket, assessing the fragility I have curated for him."Liam told me you were worsening," he says

  • The Fallen Alpha’s Pregnancy    An Uncertain Legacy

The air in the boardroom is so thin it feels like I am breathing glass.I sit at the head of the long, polished mahogany table, the wood cold against my palms. My hands are folded over my stomach, shielding the small, hard bump that has become my only compass. Liam is standing in the shadows by the glass wall, arms crossed, his silhouette a constant, looming pressure. He thinks I am broken. He thinks the trauma of last night, the bullets, and the shadows have left me too brittle to hold my own weight. He has no idea that the knife is already buried in his back."Aiden, you look exhausted," Julian, the chairman, says from the far end of the table. He leans forward, his gold cufflinks catching the morning sun. "Are you sure you shouldn't have stayed home? You look like you haven't slept in a week."I force a smile, feeling the stretch of skin across my cheekbones. "I appreciate the concern, Julian. Really. But there are things that need to be said.""We can handle the quarterly review,"

"You think you’re my savior, Liam, but you’re just the parasite who killed the host."I didn’t whisper it. I didn’t shout it. I let the words fall like lead weights into the silence of the bedroom, watching the way his face shifted, the way the smug, possessive warmth in his eyes flickered and died.He stood by the window, his silhouette dark against the moonlit garden. He turned slowly, his glass of scotch catching the light, his posture regal, untouchable. "Aiden, you’re tired. Your blood sugar is low. You’re confused.""I’m done," I said, rising from the bed. I didn't care about the mask anymore. My legs were steady, my grip on the edge of the dresser firm. I pulled the thumb drive from the lining of my coat—the coat I had kept hanging in the closet like a relic of a life he had tried to erase. "I’m done with the pills. I’m done with the nurses. And I am definitely done with the lies."He took a step toward me, his brow furrowed in that imitation of concern that used to make me mel

  • The Fallen Alpha’s Pregnancy    Breaking the Chain

The silence in this room is no longer empty, it is a lie. I stare at the three tiny black devices sitting on my nightstand, their little red lights blinking like the eyes of a demon, and I feel something snap inside me. Not the fragile, weeping snap of a broken Omega, but the sharp, dangerous click of a blade being drawn from a sheath. I was an apex predator for years. I built an empire on the corpses of men who thought they were smarter than me. I might be bleeding, I might be carrying this burden in my belly, but I am not dead yet.I hear the heavy tread of boots in the hallway. Liam. He is coming, probably to check on his investment, to see if his little pet is still behaving. I quickly sweep the bugs into a drawer, my movements smooth and deliberate. I smooth out my shirt, force the tension out of my jaw, and sit on the edge of the bed. I slump my shoulders just enough to look defeated, just enough to look like the wounded bird he wants me to be.The door opens. Liam stands there,
