Chapter 1

Penulis: Foxfall1
When I got back to the private room, Connor Winfield was surrounded by people taking pictures with him.

A luxury mechanical watch was on his wrist. Under the lights, it stood out even more.

Someone laughed. "Charlotte, that grand prize is seriously expensive. Anyone who didn't know better would think Connor is the one you're proposing to tonight."

Connor's eyes instantly turned red.

"Please don't say that. George will be upset."

As soon as he spoke, everyone looked at me.

Charlotte Kilbourn looked surprised when she saw me come back.

"Why are you just standing there? Someone might think you've been bullied."

I suddenly wanted to laugh as I looked at her.

I was the one who got hurt. But even staying silent somehow made me look like I was causing trouble.

So I didn't move.

Charlotte frowned a little.

Lyra Sharpe stood up and walked over to me.

She had a gentle face. She always looked like she was smiling whenever she looked at someone.

Until I was 18, I had believed Lyra would never do anything to embarrass me.

But now she looked up at me and lowered her voice. "George, please don't embarrass Charlotte at a time like this."

I looked at her. "Did I say anything?"

Lyra froze for a second.

Connor held the watchband as tears rolled down his face. "George, maybe I should give the watch back to you. I shouldn't have accepted it in the first place."

The moment his fingers touched the clasp, Charlotte said, "Keep wearing it."

Then she looked at me. "Whoever won it gets to keep it."

I let out a soft laugh.

The whole room fell silent.

Charlotte's eyes turned cold.

Lyra frowned. "George, we were just playing a game. Why do you have to make things so awkward?"

Then she stepped in front of Connor. Her voice stayed gentle, but her words carried a warning. "Connor has always been insecure. He's finally happy today. Can't you just let him have this?"

She said those words again.

I couldn't help looking at Connor.

Tears still hung in the corners of his eyes, but he stood beside Charlotte and gave me a look full of contempt.

Charlotte immediately walked over to me.

She carried the cool scent of cedarwood.

I had picked that perfume for her.

Back then, I said the clean, cool scent suited her.

But she thought it was too light.

Later, Connor said he liked it, and she wore it for the next three years.

Like always, she reached out to straighten my collar.

I turned my head and avoided her hand.

Someone in the room gasped.

Charlotte's expression finally darkened. "I'll go with you to try on the wedding outfits tomorrow."

I looked at her. "You still remember?"

She stared at me in disbelief. "I've never forgotten a promise I made to you."

Just then, Connor gave a soft cough.

Charlotte immediately turned around. "What's wrong?"

Connor shook his head. "Nothing. My wrist feels a little itchy. I'm probably just not used to wearing this watch."

Charlotte picked up her coat from the couch and draped it over his shoulders.

Lyra looked at me and sighed. "George, don't overthink it. Charlotte is marrying you tomorrow. We only think of Connor as a little brother."

I looked at her. "Would a little brother accept a matching watch that my fiancée personally picked out?"

Lyra's smile slowly faded. "Why do you have to talk like that?"

Charlotte turned back to me. Her voice was low and icy. "George, don't push it too far."

Suddenly, I didn't want to say another word.

In this room, even after I was humiliated, I still had to laugh and joke, "Guess I have the worst luck."

After the party ended, Charlotte drove Connor to the hospital.

There was only a small red mark on his wrist.

Lyra stayed behind to take me home. When we reached the door, she handed me her coat.

"The wind was pretty strong earlier. Don't catch a cold."

I looked down at the coat.

She always gave me a little comfort just when I was about to lose all hope. Then, the very next second, she pushed me right back where I started.

After helping me pull the coat around my shoulders, she said exactly what I expected, "George, don't take today to heart. You know Charlotte. She talks tough, but she's soft inside. Tomorrow she'll go with you to try on your wedding clothes. The day after that, you'll officially get married. You've already won, so stop arguing with Connor."

I looked at her. "What exactly did I win?"

Lyra froze.

She wanted to say something, but no words came out, because even she couldn't answer that question.

When the coach doors closed, Charlotte chased after it for a few steps.Lyra ran after it too.But in the end, the coach still drove away.I sat by the window and never looked back. The distance between us grew farther and farther.I lowered my head and opened the cuff link box. The silver cuff links were still there, but one of them had a tiny scratch on it. I gently touched it with my finger. My heart still hurt. But I could handle it now. After all, everyone must carry some regrets and keep moving forward. As long as I didn't stay in the same place and let the same people hurt me again, I would be okay.By the time I arrived in Southville, it was already nighttime. My new coworker, Isabelle Chapman, came to pick me up.When she saw me carrying my luggage, she immediately walked over to help."You're Mr. George Rayner, right? Welcome to our company. Are you tired from the trip? I bought you a hot chocolate."When she placed the hot chocolate into my hand, I froze for a moment.Isa

I took the earliest coach to Southville. The coach was old. The seats were hard, and cold air leaked in through the windows. But when I sat by the window, I felt more relaxed than I ever had before.Inside my bag was my new job offer.I was about to start working as an administrative manager at a cultural company in Southville. The salary wasn't amazing, but it was enough for me to support myself.More importantly, no one there knew Charlotte or Lyra. No one would tell me to be stronger whenever I was hurt. When the coach left the city, the rain stopped, and sunlight finally broke through the clouds.Looking out the window, I suddenly remembered something Charlotte had asked me a long time ago."George, why are you so easy to make happy?"Back then, she had bought me a cup of hot chocolate, and I was happier than if I had received some priceless gift.I really was easy to satisfy back then.A little kindness, remembering something I said, or simply turning around to look at me once wa

Lyra found the old property manager downstairs from my apartment.I had already ended my lease. The landlord said I left before sunrise, carrying only one suitcase.Lyra stood inside the empty apartment and saw a white shirt still hanging on the balcony, forgotten and never taken down. The wind blew it back and forth. She suddenly remembered how, many years ago, I was always following behind them.Charlotte walked fast, and I would run to catch up.Whenever Lyra couldn't stand watching me fall behind, she would stop and wait for me.Back then, I would smile and tell her, "Lyra, you're the best."Then Connor appeared. He would cry. He was afraid of the dark. He would tremble and say he felt unsafe. So everyone started telling me to give in to Connor, be stronger, and stop arguing with him.Even Lyra said the same thing. She said it so many times that she eventually believed it herself. She believed I truly wouldn't get hurt. The property manager searched through the storage room and f

Backstage at the hotel was complete chaos.Charlotte had everyone search the entire dressing room.Connor had cried so much that his voice was almost gone."Charlotte, I really didn't take them. Why does George keep thinking I did?"Whenever he cried like this before, Charlotte's heart would always soften. But this time, she only stood in front of the makeup mirror and looked at him with cold eyes."I'm asking you one last time. Where are the cuff links?"Connor stopped crying.Lyra frowned. "Charlotte, don't scare him. He's timid."Charlotte suddenly laughed."Timid?"She grabbed the wedding planner's binder from the table and threw it hard into Lyra's chest."Timid enough to turn George's wedding into his own spotlight? Timid enough to wear George's father's keepsake for a video shoot? Timid enough to make George apologize to him backstage?"Lyra's face turned pale as she took a step back."Weren't all those things approved by you?"Charlotte had no answer. Lyra was right. She had a

I turned my phone back on while I was on the way to the cemetery. The moment it powered up, countless messages came in. They were from Charlotte, Lyra, and Sophia. But I didn't open any of them. The driver glanced at me through the rearview mirror."Hey, man, aren't you supposed to be getting married today?"I looked down at the tie in my hands. The sales associate at the bridal shop had run after me yesterday to give it to me. I had planned to throw it away, but in the end, I brought it with me.Because I had picked out that tie myself.I had truly wanted to marry Charlotte. I had even rewritten my wedding vows over and over behind her back.I wanted to say, "I do," as softly as possible because I was afraid my voice would shake.By the time the car stopped at the cemetery entrance, it had started raining again. But I didn't have an umbrella. I didn't have one the night I was 18, and I didn't have one today either. The difference was that this time, I didn't stand there waiting f

As soon as the manager finished speaking, the ring box slipped from Charlotte's hand. The men's wedding band rolled across the floor and bumped against her high heel.Lyra froze too."What did you just say?"The manager was startled by the look on her face and quickly handed her a tablet."Mr. Rayner personally called us at four o'clock this morning and canceled everything. The hotel reception, the wedding decorations, the photography, the videography, the band, the flowers, everything was canceled. He also said that if you didn't agree, you could send the cancellation fee directly to him."Charlotte stared at the screen. My name was clearly listed under the cancellation confirmation. Everything had officially been canceled at 4:17 a.m.Only then did she seem to realize what had happened. She immediately pulled out her phone and called me.But I didn't answer. All she heard was, "The number you have dialed is currently unavailable."Charlotte's face completely darkened."Where did he
