Riley

Circe Sunbeam made tons of potions in case we ever needed to hide our scents. Normally, it’s just used for me, but now, my foster parents are rushing around the house, trying to disguise its scent and have practically drowned themselves with the potion.

I can almost guarantee that Circe will be here within the next week to give us new supplies.

Even after using so much of the potion, they have reiterated multiple times that we are not going to let Archer inside our home, that the scent is too strong here, and that they aren’t confident the potion can conceal it for long.

I sit on the front porch, watching Todd and Harry throw a football while I listen to their parents, still panicking, as they get ready inside the house.

Tires rolling on gravel meet my ears, and I smile as I sit up and Todd calls out, “Mom, Dad, he’s here!”

The door opens and Dad murmurs, “Damn it.”

Mom puts her hand on his arm as she says, “It’ll be okay. We can handle this.”

I roll my eyes; they’re too nervous for this meetup. I don’t think that Archer will question anything.

He gets out of the car, running his fingers through his dark brown hair before looking straight at me and smiling and waving. Harry scowls at him, and I don’t know why. What is his problem with Archer?

We only met him yesterday, and he saved our lives.

Archer walks towards me, his eyes flickering to my parents before meeting my eyes again as he says, “I’m glad you were free tonight.”

“Me too,” I respond with a smile. I can hear Rich and Dani’s steps on the gravel as they come closer. Rich says, “Hello there, I’m Rich Ford. Thank you for protecting my children.”

Archer grins as he gives him a firm handshake. “It’s my pleasure, sir. I’m just grateful I was there.”

“Hi! I’m Dani; it’s nice to meet you…” She trails off, waiting for him to give her his name. He smiles, “Archer, Archer Hale.”

Dad’s eyes widen in recognition, and Mom suppresses a gasp. That must be an impressive name for them to respond that way. Archer smiles, “It’s nice to meet you. I hope that I’ll be able to spend more time with Riley and will see you both more often. Is there anything you would like to know before we go? We’re just going to my house and playing video games with my friends.”

Mom shakes her head no and, with a small smile, says, “No, I know who you are. I’ve met your mom. Please, tell her that Dani said hello.”

He nods, a small furrow to his brow, probably trying to figure out where his mom and mine would’ve met. He holds his hand out to me as he asks, “Are you ready?”

I nod as I take his hand and wave goodbye to my family. Once we settle in the car and drive off, I ask, “Do you have any siblings, Archer?”

He shakes his head no and says, “Only child. My mom had to have me naturally, and after that, she said never again.”

He chuckles softly, and I smile. I like the sound of his laugh. I ask, “What kind of video games are y’all into?”

“Mainly Halo, sometimes Call of Duty, just depends on the day.”

I nod and ask as innocently as I can, “You’ll teach me and go easy on me?”

He smiles, “Of course!”

Little does he know that I play these games with my brothers every day.  I smirk to myself as he continues to drive. I fully intend to wipe the floor with him and his friends.

Once we get there, my eyes widen at the size of his pack house. It is at least 3 stories and is very wide. I wonder who all lives here.

He answers the question I haven’t asked: “The Alpha, Beta, and Gamma live here, plus guest rooms for when we have visiting packs.”

I nod, and he takes my hand and says, “Come on, I’ll give you the grand tour.”

He takes me around the whole first floor, which has the kitchen, the dining room, a large living area, two guest bedrooms, one office, and then the game room. He told me the second floor has the rooms for the Beta and Gamma families, and the top floor is reserved for the Alpha family, which is currently just him. He said that his mom used to be there, but since he took over as Alpha, she moved to a small cottage not too far from the pack house. She still comes over frequently and, most days, has dinner with him.

I feel relieved that the chances of running into her tonight are slim. I’m not sure how I’d feel about meeting her so quickly when Archer and I seem to want different things. The way he acts makes it seem like he wants a hardcore relationship, but I don’t. The only thing I’d be okay with at this moment is like a friends-with-benefits arrangement.

I look him up and down and can’t help but lick my lips. I wonder what he would be like in the sheets.

I rip my eyes away from him because I don’t want him to catch me as I mentally undress him. He opens the door to the game room and says, “Let’s play!”

Brandon and Caleb both look up from their games, and I smirk as I look around, impressed with their setup. Each had their own high-definition TV and gaming console. There were a couple of extras, too, but I noticed one TV that was bigger than the rest, and I would bet that one belonged to Archer.

I wonder if I could get him to give me his spot. It also has the most comfortable-looking chair. I say, “Hi Brandon, hey Caleb!”

They both mutter back to me before shooting and yelling at the TV’s. Archer walks over to them and playfully smacks them both upside the head as he says, “Say hello and be polite! We have a guest.”

Caleb groans, and Brandon looks over at me and says, “Hey Riley, nice shirt.”

I smile, and Caleb says, “Yeah, hey Riley.”

Archer rolls his eyes, looks at me, and asks, “Do you like the band?”

I look down at my shirt and see the AC/DC logo, and I smile, “Yeah, I love the song TNT.”

He nods with an impressed look on his face, and Caleb calls out, “I like this girl, Arch. Is it too late to call dibs?”

Archer growls softly before chucking a pillow at Caleb’s head. I laugh and think maybe hanging with the guys could be fun.

  • The Hidden Luna Queen   Chapter 31 | This Could Work

RiekaI don’t know where we went and how far we are from my home. We’re standing in front of a gigantic weeping willow tree and Leviticus tells me, “This has been one of my favorite places to go when you haven’t needed me watching you.”I blink, not realizing that he ever really left my immediate vicinity since he took over watching me. He continues, “It’s peaceful and untouched by society and packs. Do you want to see my favorite part?”The smooth cadence of his voice makes me feel more relaxed than ever. I respond back, “I’d love to.”He moves the vines out of the way and holds it open for me to walk through. I slip through and walk towards the large tree and turn to look at all the vines cascading around us, with only the smallest light from the moon illuminating us. Leviticus’s eyes seem to glow and I wonder if mine do the same. He moves closer to me and my heart rate skyrockets. He murmurs, “Are you concerned, princess?”“For?” I question, willing my heart rate to slow and for

  • The Hidden Luna Queen   Chapter 30 | Trajectory

RiekaWe arrive at home and while we were gone, Archer got a mind link from one of the guys and needed to leave. His eyes were soft as he looked at me, feeling as if he was letting me down because he needed to go. Harry and Todd both look at me as we stand in front of our home, anxiety rolling off of both of them. I stand in between them with an arm around each of them as I say, “It’s all going to be okay.”Todd’s voice wavers, “There’s no way for you to know that.”“You got your wolf.” Harry adds.“I know,” I breathe out, “But at the end of the day, I’m still your sister and we will work everything out together, I won’t abandon either of you.”The two of them simultaneously eye me, but I don’t let their skepticism phase me as I take a deep breath and walk to our front door. The moment we walked through the door I took a moment to appreciate my new deeper sense of smell and breathed in a deep breath of the space I consider home. It reminds me of autumn, crisp air, and pumpkins. When

  • The Hidden Luna Queen   Chapter 29 | The Unknown

RiekaI’m still reeling from the knowledge that I actually have a mate. I thought I lost that chance when Zane rejected me.The rapid knock on the door interrupted us and it turns out that Brandon was startled because he had patrol saying they thought they saw a vampire but no one could find it or any scent for it.Archer’s eyes connected with mine for a split second and I was so grateful that even without words he knew to say, “It must’ve been a fluke, Brandon. Vampires would reek of the metallic scent of blood.”Brandon nodded, his eyes still showing his worry as Archer led us downstairs to be with the others. The moment we are downstairs there is a startled gasp as Delilah sees me and cries out, “Riley! Your eyes!”Shit, I completely forgot.Todd and Harry rush to my side and Harry murmurs, “I can’t believe you forgot your contacts.”The corner of my mouth twitches up in amusement as I say, “I didn’t forget my contacts, Harry. Or well, maybe I did, but I don’t even know if they wou

  • The Hidden Luna Queen   Chapter 28 | Fully Connected

RiekaArcher’s agitation with Leviticus’s presence seems like it’s going to explode at any moment. Leviticus still meets my gaze, his words, “For as long as I’m needed,” seem to leave a lingering presence in the room.I say, “Unless there’s something else you need to add to this conversation, Leviticus, I think it’s alright for you to take your leave.”Archer asks, “Does that mean we’ll actually have privacy or will he just be watching us from afar?”After the question leaves his lips, a startled expression crosses over his face and he looks at Leviticus and asks, “How often do you watch her? Like… have you watched her when she undresses? Have you watched us when we’ve been more… intimate?”Leviticus’s nose scrunches up in distaste as he says, “I’m not a creep, Archer. I’m here to watch after her safety. I listen and intervene as needed. When she’s dressing or fooling around, it’s not my concern. So, no, I have never seen your precious mate undressed or her private moments with her ma

  • The Hidden Luna Queen   Chapter 27 | Trust

RiekaThis is it, I told him the truth and I can’t take it back now. Archer stares at me as he absorbs through this information. His face doesn’t show his thoughts and it’s impossible for me to know whether or not he believes me.He lets out a long drawn out breath and says, “You didn’t trust me?”His voice almost cracks in that sentence and I frown, “You didn’t trust me enough to tell me that I’m your mate.”Archer argues, “Because I thought you were a human! A human who had just been rejected by a fated mate she didn’t even realize that she had. I was trying to protect you, it had nothing to do with a lack of trust!”“And I couldn’t feel the mate bond, Archer, surely you can understand that I couldn’t just tell a random wolf my deepest secret!”“I’m not a random wolf, I’m your mate, Riley, surely you can feel it too.”The urge to correct him about my name is strong, but I let it slide this time, trying to focus on the argument at hand. He’s right, now I can feel it, this glimmering

  • The Hidden Luna Queen   Chapter 26 | Time

ArcherMy head spins as Harry’s words register in my head. She’s shifting. She’s shifting. How is this possible? Riley is meant to be a human. I couldn’t sense the presence of a wolf. But she lets out an agonizing yell that almost resembles a howl. Her voice is getting raspier and I watch as the bones in her hands contort as they slowly rearrange to make paws. The transformation radiates through her body, a ripple of movement beneath her skin. Her arms buckle, re-shaping, pulling tighter, smoother, muscles bunching with an alien grace. It’s as if she is emerging from herself; all the while, a guttural keening tears from her throat, part human, part wolf. It’s a pain I can relate to all too well, the only difference is that I knew what to expect when I shifted. I don’t think she did.Or maybe she did. It’s hard to tell, I feel like there’s so much I don’t know about her. There’s so much that she’s chosen to keep secret from me.Her eyes meet mine and I’m startled to see them blazing pu
