Crystal's POV

The forest didn’t feel like a prison. It felt like a place to prove myself.

The wind brushed my skin as I moved forward. My senses were sharper than ever. I felt every sound, every smell, every change in the air.

Hunger hit me suddenly. I hadn’t eaten, I crouched low and sniffed the air. A low growl broke the stillness.

I froze. My wolf stilled. Danger. Something in the shadows shifted. And then it stepped out.

A vampire!

It moved slowly at me, not rushing, not attacking immediately. Its pale eyes locked onto mine, not with hunger but with interest.

That made my stomach twist. “Well,” it said softly, voice cold and smooth. “So it’s true.”

I didn’t respond, but my wolf growled, uneasy. It knows something. The vampire took a step closer, studying me like I was something rare. “You don’t smell right,” it said. “Not just wolf, not just magic.”

My chest tightened. It wasn't a guess.

It knew.

Fear tried to rise, but I forced it down. I wouldn’t show weakness. Not again. “What do you want?” I asked, my voice low but steady. Its smile widened. “I was sent to find you.”

The words hit harder than any blow. My wolf snapped inside me, anger and fear crashing together.

Sent? By who?

“I didn’t think the stories were real,” it continued, circling me slowly. “A wolf who shouldn’t exist, power that shouldn’t be possible”

My magic flickered under my skin, reacting to its words. It lunged.

This time, there was no hesitation. Fear exploded in my chest but my wolf surged forward, stronger.

Fight. I leapt with my claws out, meeting it head-on. The impact shook through my bones, but I didn’t fall back. I pushed harder.

It was too fast but I was changing. Learning. Every movement became sharper. Every breath became clearer.

It struck. I dodged. I countered.

Golden sparks burst from my hands as my magic finally answered me, strong and alive. The vampire staggered, hissing in shock.

“You really are…” it breathed. “They’ll want you alive.” Ice ran down my spine.

They.

There was more. Rage burned through me. “No one is taking me anywhere,” I said. This time, I attacked first.

I moved faster, stronger, driven by something deeper than fear. My wolf and magic worked together, perfectly in sync. Its claws grazed my arm but the wound healed almost instantly.

I felt it. My power. I gathered it, focused, and struck. Light burst from me, slamming into the vampire and throwing it back.

It hit the ground hard, stunned. For the first time, it looked scared. “You don’t understand what you are,” it whispered.

“Neither do you,” I said, stepping closer. “Run.” It didn’t argue. It disappeared into the darkness. But its words stayed behind.

They’ll want you alive. The forest fell silent again but everything had changed.

I was being hunted.

Shifting back, I felt a prickling along my spine. My wolf growled, sensing a presence I hadn’t noticed before. Eyes. Watching. Waiting.

It was close, very close. “I know you’re there,” I said, my voice steady despite the tension building inside me.

Silence answered me at first. Then the air shifted. And he stepped out. My breath caught instantly.

He was tall, powerful, his presence alone enough to make the air feel heavier. His golden eyes locked onto mine, sharp and intense, like he could see straight through me.

My wolf surged forward violently. Mine. The word echoed in my head, raw and undeniable.

I staggered slightly, gripping my side as the bond pulsed between us. It wasn’t painful like before it was strong and alive.

“You’re” I started, but my voice failed. His gaze didn’t soften. It studied me. “You’re the one,” he said finally, his voice deep and controlled.

Something in me reacted instantly, a mix of relief, confusion, and anger all crashing together. My wolf leaned toward him, but I held myself back.

“I don’t even know you,” I said, forcing strength into my voice.

“And yet you feel it,” he replied. I hated that he was right. The bond pulsed again, stronger now, urging me toward him, but I resisted. I had just broken one bond, I wasn’t ready to fall into another.

“Stay back,” I warned, taking a step away. His eyes darkened slightly, not in anger, but in restraint.

“I’m not here to hurt you,” he said. My chest tightened at that. “Everyone says that,” I shot back.

For a moment, silence stretched between us, thick and heavy. He didn’t move closer, but he didn’t leave either.

Good. Because I didn’t know what I would do if he did. “You’re injured,” he said, his gaze dropping briefly to my arm.

“I’m fine,” I replied immediately. A lie. My legs trembled slightly, and the exhaustion I had been fighting finally began to surface.

The adrenaline was fading, and my body was reminding me of everything it had been through. His expression hardened not with cruelty, but with something else. Concern.

I didn’t trust it. “I don’t need your help,” I said, even as my vision blurred slightly. “You won’t survive out here like this,” he replied calmly.

“I already did,” I whispered. That seemed to catch his attention. Something flickered in his eyes, interest, maybe even respect.

“Who did this to you?” he asked, his voice quieter now, more dangerous. I hesitated. Bryan, Matthew, The pack.

The memories surged forward, but this time, they fueled me. “I handled it,” I said firmly.

His jaw tightened, like he didn’t fully believe me. Before he could respond, a sudden wave of dizziness hit me hard. My knees buckled, and the ground rushed up too fast. Darkness crept into the edges of my vision.

Strong arms caught me before I hit the sand. I tensed instantly, panic flashing through me, but I didn’t have the strength to fight.

The bond flared between us, warm and steady, wrapping around me like something safe. Something unfamiliar. “I’ve got you,” he said quietly My vision blurred, but I forced myself to look at him.

“Don’t” I whispered weakly. “Don’t lie to me.” His grip tightened slightly. “I don’t lie,” he said. For some reason, I believed him.

My body finally gave in. The last thing I saw before everything went dark was his golden eyes watching me. And this time they weren’t distant.

  • The Hybrid’s Fate   Chapter 40 (Kenneth’s POV)

Kenneth's POV Marcus's report turned out to be nothing urgent. A miscommunication about patrol scheduling for the night after the gathering, the kind of thing that would have waited perfectly well until morning. I dealt with it quickly, my mind only half present, the other half still standing back at the fire with whatever I had been about to say to Crystal before duty pulled me away from it. By the time I returned to the gathering, she had already gone. I told myself it did not matter. That there would be other evenings, other quiet moments by other fires. I had believed that easily enough walking back to my own room that night. Sitting at my desk afterward, the gathering's noise still faintly audible through the window, I found myself thinking about the words I had not managed to say, turning them over with more care than I usually allowed myself. There is something I have been wanting to tell you. It should have been simple. I had rehearsed versions of it in my head more

  • The Hybrid’s Fate   Chapter 39

Crystal's POVThe bonfire was bigger than I expected.Stella had mentioned the gathering in passing over the last several days, the seasonal marker the pack apparently observed every few months, something about honoring the turn of the moon cycle and giving everyone a reason to gather outside the usual rhythm of work and patrol. I had pictured something small. A few logs, a few people standing around them out of obligation.Instead the open field behind the training grounds had been transformed entirely. The fire itself rose tall and bright at the center, ringed by smaller lanterns strung between posts, and the smell of roasting meat and the cinnamon thing the cook had been perfecting all week drifted thick and warm across the gathered crowd. Nearly the entire pack seemed to be present, children weaving between adults, someone playing something on a stringed instrument near the edge of the firelight.I stood near the back for the first stretch of it, watching rather than participating,

  • The Hybrid’s Fate   Chapter 38

Crystal's POVI found Stella in the linen room off the eastern corridor, the small overlooked space the pack used for storing bedding and towels, where she had apparently retreated to sort through a fresh delivery before the gathering later that week required every spare blanket the pack owned.I had simply found myself walking that direction after my evening session, the elder's words about my mother still settling somewhere quiet in my chest, and some part of me had wanted company that did not require explaining any of it."So," I said, dropping into the chair across from Stella with far more casualness than I actually felt, "Jordan."She did not even look up from the basket of linens she was sorting, though the tips of her ears went faintly pink. "What about him?""That is what I am asking you," I said. "What about him?""He is Kenneth's beta," she said, with the careful neutrality of someone reciting a fact rather than answering a question. "He is good at his job. He is loyal.""H

  • The Hybrid’s Fate   Chapter 37

Crystal's POV"Tell me about the coven," I said, before I could lose my nerve. The elder paused mid-motion, his hand halfway to the small book he always carried, and looked at me with the particular stillness that meant he was deciding how honest to be.We had just finished the evening session, my third of the new two-a-day rhythm, and my body carried the familiar settled ache that no longer worried me. The clearing had gone soft and gold around us, the sun low enough to paint long shadows across the grass without yet surrendering the sky to dark."Which part," he asked carefully."Any part," I said. "All of it, eventually. But tonight, whatever you think I am ready to hear."He considered that, lowering himself onto the same flat rock he favored, setting the book beside him unopened. I sat across from him, cross-legged on the still-warm ground, waiting."Your mother's coven was old," he said finally. "Older than most of the wolf packs that exist today, though witches do not measure t

  • The Hybrid’s Fate   Chapter 36

Crystal's POV"You frown when you concentrate," I said. "Did you know that."Kenneth glanced up from the report in front of him, one eyebrow lifting slightly. We were in the same library room as before, though this time I had not come looking for quiet. I had come looking for him, with no real excuse beyond restlessness and the fact that the second training session of the day had ended early and left me with nowhere useful to put the leftover energy."I was not aware that frowning was a crime," he said."It is not," I said. "It is just very serious. Constantly. Even when you are reading something boring, like that report you are holding right now, you frown like it personally offended you.""Border allocation reports are offensive," he said, deadpan. "They reported the need for three more patrol points on the northern boundary and have not explained why any of them require new construction instead of reassigning existing posts.""See," I said, gesturing at his face. "That exact expres

  • The Hybrid’s Fate   Chapter 35

Crystal's POVI had not planned on walking with him.The evening had simply turned out that way, I had left the second training session of the day later than usual, and I had taken the longer path back toward the pack house instead of the direct one, mostly because the air outside was finally cooling after the heavy heat of the afternoon and I was not ready to be indoors yet.The elder's new pace was beginning to show its logic, even if I had argued against it only days before. Two shorter sessions left less wreckage than one long, frustrated one. My body ached differently now. I had grudgingly started to admit, somewhere in the back of my mind, that he had been right.Kenneth was already on that path when I reached it.He did not look surprised to see me, which made me wonder, briefly, whether he had taken the longer route home for the same unspoken reason I had."Long day," I said, falling into step beside him."They are mostly long days," he said, though there was no real complaint

  • The Hybrid’s Fate   Chapter 23

Crystal's POVStella told me it was expected. That was the word she used. Expected. Like attendance at the pack dinner was not optional, but a thing that simply happened and I was now included in it."I don't eat with people I don't know," I said."You know me," she replied, already moving toward t

  • The Hybrid’s Fate   Chapter 22 (Kenneth’s POV)

Kenneth's POV I told myself I was checking the perimeter. That was why I had taken the long route past the eastern clearing two mornings in a row. It was nothing more than routine, nothing more than the kind of survey I did every morning across every part of this territory. Jordan did not say any

  • The Hybrid’s Fate   Chapter 21

Crystal's POVI was at the clearing before the elder arrived. That surprised me. Yesterday I had barely dragged myself out of bed, and today I was standing in the middle of the open ground before the sun had fully settled in the sky. I did not think too hard about what that meant. The air in the cl

  • The Hybrid’s Fate   Chapter 18

Crystal's POV We walked until we reached an isolated building, it felt older than the pack house, not just in structure, but in presence. The air was quieter here, heavy in a way that made my senses sharper, and even my steps slowed.“Who stays here,” I asked, glancing around as we moved deeper in
