LOGINJames brought her to a high rise apartment building at the heart of the city. Apparently it was one of the many buildings that belonged to Goven Industries in the city.
She was taken to the Pent house. “This is where you will be staying, pending your return to the Goven household, if you want to change anything please let us know.” James said. “Everything you need has been provided for you, shoes, clothes, toiletries, food…” “Er… Mr. James, I am very grateful for your help. But like I said earlier I do not wish to return to the Goven household. Just give me a few days, as soon as I find a job, I will move out of here and you’ll never hear from me again.” Dukia said. “Please, Miss Goven, we understand your anger and your wish to not return. But kindly reconsider the offer.” “I’m sorry, but my mind is made up. I’m not coming back. Are you even aware that my mother is dead? She died few weeks after we were chased out of the house.” “We are aware. Your grandfather was broken when the PI he had hired to find you both showed him her death certificate.” James replied. “No, not as broken as I was at age 8 with no father nor mother. We begged him to reconsider those many years ago, yet he still threw us out. So why now? Dukia asked with tears rolling down her eyes. “Your grandfather was deceived by your uncle Marcus those many years ago. Shortly after your father died, he brought fabricated evidence that your mother had been cheating on your father. He even brought a fake DNA test showing that you were not your father’s child. He claimed that your father had brought all of those documents to him shortly before he died, not knowing how to confront your mother about it. He said your father agreed to discuss the matter with your mother the day he died. He said he was so sure your mother had a hand in his death to cover up her tracks.” “Your grandfather was so blinded by rage added to the heartbreak of just loosing his favourite son that he did not conduct his own investigation. He just disowned you and your mother. It wasn’t until years later he began to question the validity of those accusations and conducted his own investigation. They turned out to be false and ever since then he has been searching for you.” “Please, your grandfather needs to step down from the position of the CEO because of his health and he needs someone who will take over. And that person is you.” “I’m sorry but I do not think I can. I know nothing about being the CEO of Goven Industries.”Dukia replied. ‘We know that you studied Business Administration in College. And that you graduated top of your class. Surely, with a little pointers here and there you’ll be up to the task.” “Please, your grandfather does not want to leave the company to Marcus and his family. They will run the company to the ground.” James said. “I’ve heard you, but can I have some time to think about it?” Dukia asked I’m sorry, but there is not much time for that. We need to fly back to City E this night and we need to return to your grandfather with your answer.” James replied. Dukia thought about it. If she really wanted to get revenge for what her uncle did to her family and for the way the Young’s treated her, she would need power and influence. And what better way to avenge her parents death than to make sure her uncle does not get the CEO title he has schemed so hard for. Just before her mother died, she had whispered to her that her uncle, Marcus had been behind the death of her father. She had no evidence to prove it. Yet. “Alright, I will do it.” “Oh, thank you so much Miss Goven. Your grandfather…” “I’m not done yet Mr, James. I will do it only on these conditions. First, I will reveal my real identity as the heiress of the Goven family only when I am ready to do so. Second, I will not be returning to the Goven household or to City E until I am ready to. Thirdly, since my identity can not yet be revealed, I will be acting as the CEO via a proxy. You will have to provide someone who will stand in as the CEO while I work from behind the scenes. Finally, I will like to begin work in one of the branches as an employee to understand the internal structure of the company, preferably a branch here in City M.” “Alright Miss Goven. We need to be on our way now so we can get to City E. I will relay your conditions to your grandfather and get back to you tomorrow.” “Thank you for agreeing to this. Your grandfather will be overjoyed. Do take care and have a good night rest. Here is my number, do not hesitate to call me if you need anything. And this is a credit card with no limit on it, should you want to get anything in the meantime.” And just like that Dukia was left alone in the huge pent house. She took a tour around the house. She could scarcely believe her eyes. It was so lavishly furnished. She first of all took a hot water bath. Who would believe that less than 3 hours ago she was crouching under a tree, shivering in the rain with no hopes of where to go. The bath calmed her nerves and released the tension from her shoulders. She found an assortment of clothes in a walk in closet. Too dumbfounded by everything going on, she picked the first night wear her hands touched, changed into it and fell into bed. She was so tired, she fell asleep mid-sentence in her prayer that all these should not be a dream by the time she woke up in the morning. It turned out to be reality, but this was only the beginning of the battles she would have to fight to get what she wanted so badly: revenge. The Operations department had just brought in the list of pending projects when she heard shouts from just outside her door. Before she could react, her door was rudely flung open and in walked a pot bellied , bald, red looking man. “Who do you think you are coming into this place to start calling the shots, girl?” He spat out angrily.“I assume you are Mr. Cox. I am Dukia Chen. Pleasure to meet you.”“I am the new Manager sent from the headquarters, I believe you were intimated of my pending arrival before now.” Dukia replied calmly.“And what exactly gives you the right to start terminating my staff on your first day here. Look here young lady, you are just a little girl that I can trample and return back to where ever you came from. I am the Director here.” He barked.“Mr. Cox, you seem not to have read the email sent to you regarding my resumption here properly. I believe it was clearly stated that I am free to make major administrative decisions with or without your consent.”“N
The weekend passed in a haze of meetings and paperwork. She had looked through City M’s branch’s financials and just like Arthur had said, they were on the brink of bankruptcy. It would take a miracle to turn this ship around. And that was exactly what she was here to do this Monday morning - work a miracle. Her suit this morning was an armor. A sharp charcoal pin striped pant suit that screamed sophistication and elegance. Paired with a matching pair of dark red shoes and bag, it made her almost believe she could do this. Almost.Dukia had packed her hair into an elegant low bun. And she looked every inch the corporate giant she was about to become.Stepping into the lobby of the building of the branch office, she met no one at the reception. She took the elevator up to the 15th floor, following the office’s floor plan she had studied intently over the weekend. She began to see why the branch was suffering as much as it was. There was no structure nor order. The time was currently 8
The next day, the sound of her phone ringing jolted her awake. It was an unknown caller id. She picked the call hesitantly.“Hello…”“Miss Goven, this is James. I am sorry, it seems like I disturbed your sleep.”“No, you didn’t please go ahead.”“ Your grandfather wishes to speak to you, and if possible see your face. He would have been in City M by now, but the doctor strongly advised against it. You see, his health is not as it used to be and he has been advised to limit all forms of stress or strain on his body.”“Er… will it be possible to have a video call with you?” James askedDukia, looked at the clock on the night stand. It read 8:23am. “Can you give me 15 minutes?”“Sure, take all the time you need.”Dukia quickly ran to the bathroom, brushed her teeth, washed her face and put on some powder and lipgloss she had found in one of the cabinets last night during her mini tour of the apartment. She changed into a lightweight floral gown and settled down in the sitting room. She

The divorce papers landed on Dukia’s dinner table, beside her untouched food. She looked up to see Liam, her husband typing away on his phone without even sparing her a glance. “Sign them quickly, I promised Margaret’s father that the engagement will be announced by next week. I do not want any delays”, said Harold, her father-in-law.From across the table, Sloane her mother-in-law added, “thankfully, her barren womb served a good purpose. There are no children to complicate the divorce.” Five years of the constant insult and neglect had taught her to develop a thick skin. She would not indulge them with her tears. At that moment, something within her cracked. The final pieces of whatever affection she had for Liam. Obviously, there was no saving the marriage. She would not waste another second mourning what had been lost.“I need a pen to sign.”Liam’s thumb stopped scrolling. For a split second, something flickered over his face. Regret maybe? But before she could place her finge
