Chapter 5

Draco Aethel
I took a deep breath and forced myself to calm down.

I quickly unlocked my phone and sent my location to Mark Castro, the detective who had been handling my case, telling him that Gavin was standing outside my front door.

Only after the message was successfully sent did I slowly unlock the door.

Gavin looked exactly as he always did. He wore a neatly pressed dress shirt, and his hair was perfectly combed.

He was carrying a shopping bag, and his expression was as warm and caring as ever.

Victor looked up at me with bloodshot eyes. His voice was hoarse."Jason, I'm sorry. I never expected Timothy to go this far. And I never thought Juniper and the others would expose him because of a fight over the money. I thought I could keep this hidden from you forever and let you continue working peacefully. After everything was over, I planned to give you and the others a large compensation payment so you could start a new life. But I failed..."He looked filled with guilt and helplessness.I wanted to say something. But no words came out.My mind kept replaying everything that had happened over the past six months.Victor's unusual concern for me and his calm attitude when he admitted the truth finally made sense. The conference room fell silent. The only sounds were Victor's suppressed breathing and the occasional sound of police sirens outside the window.Mark finally spoke, "We have now arrested Timothy and all the core members of the Synapse Future fraud organization. "Sir, what exactly is going on? Why is Victor here?" I couldn't hold back any longer and asked.Mark sighed and handed me a file."Take a look at this first. These are the detailed statements from Juniper and the administrative specialist, along with the evidence we've collected."I took the file and quickly flipped through the pages. The statements described the way the Synapse Future fraud organization operated. Most of it matched what had been reported in the news. However, they mentioned one important person who was connected to Timothy. That person was Timothy's childhood friend, Victor. The moment I saw his name, I looked at Victor in disbelief.Mark nodded."That's right. Victor really is Timothy's childhood friend. According to Juniper's statement, Victor learned about Timothy's fraud plan six months ago. At the time, Timothy asked him to invest, telling him it was a guaranteed money-making opportunity. Victor didn't know it was a scam at first. By the time he discovered the tr

People like Juniper, who were middle managers, handled supervising the mules. The lower-level employees became part of the fraud scheme without ever knowing it.Over the years, the organization had stolen nearly a million dollars through this operation. After their latest successful scam brought in a huge amount of money, Timothy tried to keep most of it for himself. He gave Juniper and the administrative specialist only a small share. That was why they became furious and decided to expose the organization using their real names. When I reached that part of the article, I finally understood why Synapse Future had reported me as a missing person. They hadn't been worried about an employee at all. Juniper and the others were using me to send Timothy a warning. They wanted him to know they already had evidence against the organization. If he refused to split the money fairly, they would expose everything. The reason they waited exactly six months was because the group had a hidden rule. E

Mark sighed helplessly. "We also contacted Synapse Future. They confirmed that the files you worked on were compiled from publicly available industry data. They weren't confidential company information, so they didn't cause any real damage."Over the next several hours, I gave the police a detailed statement. I told them everything I could remember about my time with Victor. Now and then, I caught sight of him through the window. He sat quietly in the interrogation room. He even looked a little bored. The police questioned Victor several more times. They verified every detail of his story and even contacted his family. His father rushed to the police station with a dark expression and scolded him in front of everyone. However, Victor didn't seem to care at all.In the end, the police confirmed that everything Victor had said was true.He really had no criminal motive. He had created the entire ridiculous scheme simply because he was bored. From a legal standpoint, although Victor had d

His answer avoided the questions that mattered most. That only made me feel that something was even more wrong. But he looked far too calm.Just then, there was a knock at the front door."Jason, we're here." It was Mark.I immediately got up and opened the door.Mark walked in with two other officers. The moment he saw Gavin sitting on the couch, his eyes turned sharp. "Are you Gavin Leonard?""I'm not."Gavin calmly stood up and looked at Mark.He handed me a small piece of paper with a phone number written on it.Then he quietly left with the officers.I stood there holding the note, my mind in complete chaos. As I watched Mark lead Gavin away, my fingers trembled around the slip of paper.I couldn't understand what was happening. Then Mark called me from the doorway. "Jason, we need you to come back to the police station to give an additional statement."I nodded, grabbed my jacket, and followed them out.The police car sped through the streets. The ride was completely silent.I tu

It looked as though he was searching for something, or maybe it was just a casual look.I closed the door behind him. By then, my back was soaked with cold sweat. Even so, I forced myself to stay calm."Mr. Leonard, what brings you here? You didn't have to bring all this for me.""I noticed you've been taking a long time to reply to my messages these past few da
