Monday was the last ordinary day, and I spent it the way you spend a thing you know you are not going to have again. I did not spend it grieving. I want to tell you that, because a different woman a woman with less practice than I had gotten, that autumn, at holding more than one true thing might have spent the last ordinary day drowning in the loss of it. I did not drown. I had learned, on a kitchen floor at two AM and at a café window and in a front room in Brooklyn Heights, that the loss and the day could both be true at the same time, and that letting the loss have the whole day would be letting it steal the day, and I was not going to let it steal the day. So I lived the day. ── I did the small practical things. I called my three standing clients and told them I was going to be unreachable for a few days for a family matter, and I moved what could be moved and confirmed what could not. I paid my quarterly taxes early, because I did not know what the next weeks were going to demand of my attention and I did not want a deadline waiting for me on the other side of them. I did the ordinary administrative labor of a woman who ran her own business and intended to keep running it, because and this was a decision I had made, quietly, over the preceding days I intended to keep running it. I was not going to disappear into the waiting. I had thought about that. I had thought about it a great deal. There is a version of the story I was about to be inside of the woman who loves a man behind glass in which the woman’s whole life narrows to the visiting, to the calendar of allowed contact, to the slow organizing of an entire existence around a person she can see for an hour a month through plexiglass. I had watched, in three years of marriage, my whole life narrow to the shape of a man. I was not going to do it again, even for a man who deserved it more, even for a man who would never once ask me to. I was going to keep my business. I was going to keep my apartment with the trees. I was going to keep my mother’s kitchen and Priya’s friendship and the book I had bought and the small reassembled life I had built out of the wreck of the old one. And I was going to love him, too. Both. The full life, and the man behind the glass. Two true things. I had gotten good at two true things. ── I went to my mother’s in the afternoon. I did not tell her. I had decided I was not going to tell Siobhán not the whole of it, not the count, not the name, not the surrender coming on Tuesday because there was nothing in the telling that would protect her and a great deal in it that would frighten her, and my mother had spent three years frightened for me and had earned, now, the right not to be. What I could give her was not the truth. What I could give her was an afternoon. So I gave her an afternoon. We made soup. She showed me, again, the way her mother had taught her to soften the onions before anything else went in the pot, the small patient labor of it, the not-rushing. We drank tea. We talked about nothing her neighbor’s dog, a program she had been watching, whether I was eating enough, the specific unchanging content of an afternoon between a mother and a daughter who have found their way back to each other and are no longer wasting the finding. Before I left, at the door, she put her hand on my face. She did not ask if anything was wrong. She had gotten, over the autumn, very good at not asking. But she held my face in her hand for a moment longer than the gesture usually took, and she looked at me, and whatever she saw and my mother saw a great deal more than she ever said she did not name it. She said: “You’ll come Sunday.” Not a question. A fixed point. A thing she was placing in the week ahead for me to hold onto *there will be a Sunday, and you will be here, and the soup will be on.* I said: “I’ll come Sunday, Mam.” I did not know, saying it, whether it was going to be true. Sunday was on the other side of Tuesday, and I did not know what the other side of Tuesday looked like, and I did not know whether the woman who came to Sunday soup was going to be a woman whose life had just come apart or a woman holding it together or some third woman I had not met yet. But I said it. And I decided, driving away, that I was going to make it true that whatever Tuesday did, I was going to be at my mother’s table on Sunday, because the being-there was a promise, and I had decided I was going to be a woman who kept the promises that were mine to keep. ── I came back to Brooklyn Heights in the evening. Faraz let me in. He was quieter than usual I had learned to read Faraz’s quiets, and this one was the quiet of a man carrying the same Tuesday I was carrying, in his own way, from his own place in the strange family the house had become. He took my coat. He said Marcus was upstairs. He said and this was as close as Faraz came to naming any of it “It is a good thing you are here tonight, Saoirse.” I said: “I know, Faraz.” He held my eyes for a second. Then he did a thing he had not done before he reached out, and he squeezed my shoulder once, briefly, the way you touch a person you have decided is family, and he said, low: “I will be downstairs. I am not going anywhere tonight.” And I understood what he was telling me, in the economical way Faraz told me things. He was telling me that he was going to keep watch. That the house was safe. That the two of us upstairs did not have to hold any part of the world tonight, because Faraz was going to hold it for us, downstairs, all night, so that the last ordinary night could be only what it was and nothing else. I said: “Thank you, Faraz.” He nodded. I went up the stairs. ── Marcus was in the study, but he was not working. The desk was closed. The laptop was shut. The eighteen pages of the statement were in a folder, done, finished, waiting for Tuesday. He had, I understood, finished the machine. He had given the machine its six days. He had built the thing that would protect everyone and take down only him, and it was done, and there was nothing left to build. There was only the one day left that was not the machine’s. There was only tonight. He was standing at the window the window he was always standing at, the one that looked at the river and when I came in he turned, and he looked at me, and neither of us said anything for a moment. Outside, the lights along the river did the small steady thing they did. Inside, the house was warm, and quiet, and held by Faraz downstairs, by the finished machine in its folder, by the specific stillness of a place where everything that could be arranged had been arranged, and nothing was left to do but the one thing the day had been saved for. I crossed the room to him. He watched me cross it. And when I reached him, at the window, in the last of the evening light, with the river behind him and the whole arranged and finished and frightening world held at bay for one night by the people who loved us I reached up, and I put my hand against the side of his face, the way I had wanted to since a bookstore, since a café, since a front room, since a night two months ago when his face had been behind a mask and I had not been allowed to touch it. He turned his face into my hand.
