I waited for Lady Miriam and my brother outside the territorial chamber.

The voices that had filled the room only moments ago had faded into quiet conversations as advisers gathered their papers and scribes carried away stacks of records.

I held my own notes against my chest.

ELARAI waited for Lady Miriam and my brother outside the territorial chamber. The voices that had filled the room only moments ago had faded into quiet conversations as advisers gathered their papers and scribes carried away stacks of records.I held my own notes against my chest. Before today, I had expected to spend the entire hearing listening in silence but instead, people had listened to me.It still didn't feel real as I kept on thinking about it.As Lady Miriam spoke with another adviser, an elderly man approached me."Princess Elara."I looked up quickly, he smiled kindly."You noticed something the rest of us overlooked."This was like the seventh compliment I was hearing after the hearing ended. I wasn't sure what to say and he inclined his head."Thank you."Before I could answer, he walked away and I stood there blinking after him. Another adviser nodded as he passed. "Well observed."A woman carrying a stack of documents smiled politely."I hope you'll attend more he

RONANI spent the rest of the night wondering who else could have torn out those pages till I eventually slept. The morning sunlight crept across the floor until it reached my boots and only then did I realize dawn had come.I was still at my office. I ended up staying there the whole night without even realizing it.I heard a knock on the door and asked the person to come in. One of the servants stepped inside and bowed."Alpha, Elder Varic has requested a private audience."I frowned slightly. "Right now?""Yes."I rubbed my tired eyes before standing."Show him in."The servant bowed again before leaving.A moment later the old elder came into my office. He was really old. His silver hair was not as thick as it used to be and he was using a carved cane to help him walk.He had given advice to my father a time ago even before I became the Alpha. He rarely requested private meetings which meant whatever brought him here mattered. He bowed respectfully. "Alpha.""Elder Varic, please

RONAN For several minutes, I simply stared at the Journal. The leather on the journal felt rough when I touched it with my fingers as I started to untie the cord on the journal. The knot, on the cord of the journal came undone easily and I opened up the journal. For some reason, I had imagined the first page would hold battle plans or military orders.Instead, it was a list of things he wanted to work on.He writes things like, grain delivery delayed, stable roof needs repair before winter, replace worn practice swords.I blinked and then turned another page.He writes training schedules, guard rotations and supply requests. All of these were small and ordinary things, I found myself smiling before I realized it. It was actually a sad smile. He always wrote everything down, even the smallest details.I could almost hear him complaining that if he didn't, I would forget half of it. "You worry too much," he used to tell me. "And you don't worry enough," I would answer. He would al

RONANAlmost two weeks had passed since finding out Elara was the Alpha King's sister after she left. I hadn't realized how much could change in almost two weeks or maybe nothing had changed.Maybe I was the one who had begun noticing things I had ignored before.Breakfast arrived later than usual, the eggs were colder and the tea was too bitter.I took one sip before setting the cup back down."It needs more honey," I said without thinking. The servant standing nearby lowered her head immediately."I'm sorry, Alpha, I'll prepare another cup."I watched her hurry away and a strange thought crossed my mind.Elara had never asked how I liked my tea, she always knew the best for me. I frowned. It was only tea, anyone could learn that and yet the next morning, it was still wrong. My office wasn't even any better.Sorted letters across my desk were stacked unevenly, important reports had somehow ended up beneath trade records, the ink pot was on the wrong side of the table and someone ha

ELARAThe first thing I did when I woke up was reach for the file on my bedside table. It was the same one I'd fallen asleep reading. The early morning sunlight came in through the curtains casting a golden glow in my room but my attention stayed on the papers instead. I read the line that had bothered me the night before and then I read the paragraph before it.I also studied the map attached to it again and still couldn't explain why it felt wrong. One thing I noticed is that the dispute that was going to be resolved at the territorial hearing today was similar to the test question Lady Miriam gave me to answer when we first met each other. A gentle knock came from the door. "Princess?"A maid stepped inside after I answered. “Breakfast is ready.""I'll be there shortly." I said and the maid bowed before leaving.I closed the file carefully and rested my hand on its cover.Today wasn't about proving how clever I was. Cassian had already made that clear and even so, I couldn't sto

ELARAI stared at Cassian for several seconds."She really wants me there?"Even after agreeing, it still didn't feel real.Lady Miriam had taught members of the royal court for years including men and women that were far more experienced than I was.Why would she want me sitting in on an actual territorial hearing?Cassian smiled, almost as if he knew exactly what I was thinking."She wouldn't have asked otherwise."I lowered my eyes. "I still don't understand why.""You don't have to."He reached over and gently straightened one of the books sitting beside me."Just remember one thing."I looked back at him."You won't be speaking, you will just observe.” He said and I gave a positive nod. A small breath escaped me before I realized I had been holding it."I can do that.""I know."“I will be leaving you now so you can sleep now and prepare for tomorrow.". Afterwards, Cassian left and I was left to drown in my own personal thoughts. That night, sleep refused to come. I turned ont
