~THE LYCAN ENFORCER ~
~Annabeth's POV~ "If this art isn't finished by dawn, my Uncle will have both our heads." Tommy’s voice was shaking so hard the paintbrushes in his hand rattled like dry bones. I sat up on my thin mattress, looking hard at the blank canvas in front of us. "A Lycan Enforcer doesn't care about art, Tommy," I said, trying to steady my own breathing. "He cares about power and control." My eyes still glued to the terrifyingly blank canvas in the center of the room. In a day's time, one of the most feared men in the Lycan territories, The new Lycan Enforcer... Kael, would arrive here in Red moon pack. He wasn't coming for a social visit. He was coming to evaluate our pack. In this world, an evaluation gone wrong usually ended in a massacre of the weak. And as a human living among wolves, I was the weakest thing in this pack. "He might kill me if this peace offering isn't perfect," Tommy whispered, his eyes wide with the predatory fear only a Beta feels when a superior is coming. "Anna, please. I can't even see the colors anymore." I stood up, the cool floorboards biting at my feet. I wasn't a shifter like them. I didn't have the strength to fight or speed to run fast, but I had a mind that could create something great out of nothing. "Pick up the brush," I commanded. "Close your eyes. We aren't painting a landscape here. We’re painting a masterpiece." For seventeen hours, we disappeared into the work. I sat on the floor, guiding tommy through a fever dream of purples and stormy gray paints. As I watched the paint hit the canvas, I couldn't help but remember the last time our pack faced an evaluation from the formal Enforcer. I was four years old when my parents tried to outrun the reign of the previous Alpha. They didn't want me to grow up as a play toy for the werewolves. But sadly, They were caught on their escape and were to be punished. Unfortunately for them, the Enforcer at that time was present for an evaluation and he gave the order for their punishment. My father was whipped 100 times until his whole body became a pile of red blood with shattered bones. He died instantly. My mother was brutally raped until her spine snapped in half. The Luna at the time had held my head, forcing my small eyes to stay open. 'WATCH,' she had whispered. 'This is what happens to humans who forget their place.' "Anna? Anna! It's done." Tommy’s voice snapped me back to the present. The painting was haunting. Two massive wolf packs howling at a single, blood red moon. It was beautiful but It was a lie. What they were capable of doing wasn't beautiful. After an inspection from our current Alpha Dorian, Tommy's uncle, he seemed pleased, and had the canvas whisked away to be framed before the Lycan Enforcer arrived. ~~~ "Wake up, sleepyhead!" Tommy shook my shoulder just as the sun began to dip. "The Enforcer arrives in an hour. Tame that jungle you call hair, will you." I rubbed my eyes and headed to the cracked mirror. My hair was a wild, kinky mane of dark curls, my Lion’s mane. I spent forty minutes pinning it back, trying to look as small and invisible as possible while dressed in a simple floral green dress. Outside, the air was warm. The entire pack stood in silent, rigid formation. Then, the SUVs arrived, a convoy of shiny black vehicles that moved with predatory grace. When the doors opened, the atmosphere turned to ice. A dozen men stepped out, all in black suits, their auras thick with power. But the man who stepped out of the middle car was different. He wore a navy suit that hugged shoulders broad enough to carry the weight of the whole realm. He didn't just walk, he moved like he owned the very ground beneath him. He must be Kael. The new Lycan Enforcer. His eyes seemed to be scanning the crowd and I immediately dropped my gaze, just Incase. Rule one; As a human, Never make eye contact with a powerful wolf or Lycan of great power. "Dorian," the Enforcer’s voice was a low, commanding rumble as he greeted our Alpha. "Kael. I see you're settling into the role well," Alpha Dorian said, his voice strained. "Well someone has to keep order." He said vaguely and halfway grinned. "My nephew has a gift for arts and we hope you can accept this offering as we wish you well in your regime." Dorian said to him. "Tommy, fetch the offering." Alpha Dorian ordered, and Tommy quickly left my side, glancing at me hopefully before making his way to them. Tommy stepped forward, presenting the painting. My heart hammered. Thum-thum. Thum-thum. A fragile sound in a sea of silent predators. "A gift, Sir," Tommy said and briefly glanced at my direction again. Kael was silent for a long moment, his eyes scanning the canvas. "You have a rare talent, boy," he finally said. Tommy smiled and turned his head to look at me once more. Then, his voice sharpened like a blade. "But why do you keep looking back at the crowd?" The silence that followed was deafening. "I... it’s nothing, Sir," Tommy stammered. "Kael.. I'm sure it's nothing." Dorian called out, wanting to be in control of the situation. "Quiet," Kael snapped at Dorian, who had tried to interject. He stepped toward Tommy, his voice dropping to a dangerous growl. "Who were you looking at?" I used my hair to shield my face and wished the ground would open up and swallow me. "Sir..." "Give me a name." "Annabeth." Tommy choked out as he couldn't take the pressure. The name hung in the air like a noose. I squeezed my eyes shut. "Annabeth." Kael repeated. The way he said my name wasn't a question, it was a summons. "Annabeth, join us, won't you?" The enforcer called out to the crowd of people. I let out a sharp spikey breath. I looked up and glanced at two wolves from the pack who looked at me with the same stern look as ever, but this time, they looked somewhat scared as well. Scared for me. "I don't like being kept waiting. Annabeth." I took another shaky, jagged breath. My legs felt like lead as I took a step forward. Lord of the defenseless, I prayed, don't let him kill me tonight. ~~ANNABETH’S POV The door clicked shut behind Kael, and I was left staring at the empty space where he had stood. My fingers flew to my lips before I even realized it. They were still swollen, still red and tingling from the way he’d kissed me like he was trying to brand me with his mouth and was terrified I’d disappear if he didn’t kiss me harder.Goddess, I Can't believe I attacked him like that.I pulled him down onto the bed and ground against him like I didn’t care who was listening. And he could have marked me and ended this war inside me in one bite. But he stopped. He had stopped when I didn't.I fell back onto the pillows with a shaky breath, pressing the heels of my hands to my eyes. I don't know why I felt ashamed of my actions. The room smelled like him now and My body still hummed from his touch, from the way his hands had slid into my hair like he owned it.“I’m an idiot, a big idiot.” I whispered to the ceiling. But even as I said it, I was smiling.I didn’t sleep f
ANNABETH'S POVThe footsteps didn’t stop at the door. They came straight through it.The door swung open without a knock or warning and Kael came through slowly. His face was gloomy. No sign of rage, just exhaustion. His dark hair was damp at the temples, like he’d run his hands through it too many times. His shirt was half-undone at the collar, and there was a smear of dirt across his knuckles. He stepped inside and closed the door behind him. The sound of the latch clicking making me jump a little. For a long moment he didn’t speak. He just looked at me. Like he was trying to think of what to say to me. I kept my face straight. The silence stretched until it hurt. My heartbeat speeding up by the tension that lingered. I wanted to say something. But I didn’t. Finally, he looked away from me. His jaw locked Then his eyes came back to mine, and when he spoke, his voice was low and firm.“Let’s get one thing clear.”He took a step closer. Then another. Until he was close enough that I
ANNABETH'S POVGasps rippled through the crowd when the words came out of my mouth. Some even muttered my name like it was a curse.Goddess, I didn’t know where all that bravery came from.I kept walking until I was standing in the center where they were, right between Kael and Tommy. I could feel Kael’s gaze burning into the side of my face, but I didn’t look at him. Not yet. I looked at Tommy instead. His eyes were glassy now. “Annabeth, you don't have to do....”“Shut up,” I whispered to him. Then louder, to Kael, “You don’t get to do this. You don't get to torture my friends this way.”Kael’s jaw ticked. “You don’t get to tell me what I don’t get to do in my own fortress.”“I’m not telling you,” I said. “I’m begging you.”That seemed to catch him off guard. His brows pulled together, just slightly.“You think I don’t know what they did?” I went on, my voice rising. “I know. I heard about the guards. I know people died. And I’m not saying Tommy shouldn’t pay for that. But this,” I
ANNABETH’S POVI moved forward, trying to squeeze my way to the front door so I could see clearly. My shoulder knocked into someone, but I didn’t stop. I couldn’t breathe right. My chest felt like it was caving in with every step.I held my breath all through, and once my eyes caught sight of the people that were caught, it felt like I was going to have a heart attack.Tommy. No.My breath hitched and tears pooled up in my eyes, hot and fast. He was kneeling on the cold stone with his hands bound behind him, blood smeared on the side of his jaw. His hair was messy, his shirt torn. But his back was straight. He didn’t look broken yet, He looked furious.I turned to look at Kael who already had his eyes on me. He had a distant look in his eyes and I couldn’t really guess what he was thinking at the moment. His face gave nothing away. It was Stone cold. Like he wasn’t the same man who’d brought me breakfast this morning and teased me about faking sleep. He looked away from me and focus
KAEL’S POV~The training hall still smelled like blood and sweat when I left it. I should have felt better after getting it out of my system but I didn’t. Lucien’s words followed me down the cold stone corridors.“Are you even sure she values you as much as you value her, Kael?”I told myself I didn’t care what he thought. But It was evidently getting to me.My feet moved on their own, carrying me back to the east wing. Back To her. I didn’t knock when I reached Annabeth’s door. I caught her, pretending to still be asleep while her pulse moved rapidly. She was very much awake. She lay on the bed, eyes closed, face turned toward the wall. The act was almost convincing. I chuckled under my breath and shut the door quietly behind me. “I'll just go take a quick shower. Feel free to join me instead of trying to take a sneak peek.” I murmured. No answer. I allowed her have her little fake sleep victory.First, I needed to wash this dry blood off my hands and face. The bath
KAEL’S POVI barely got a blink of sleep last night. It was impossible to sleep while she was lying this close to me. Every breath she took, every shift against the sheets, pulled me in. I lay there watching her, memorizing the way her lashes fanned across her cheeks, the way her lips parted slightly when she dreamed. Once the first light came up, I forced myself up, stretching out the tension in my shoulders. I checked in on Annabeth. She was still fast asleep, her face peaceful in a way it rarely was when she was awake. I smiled without meaning to and leaned down, pressing a kiss to her forehead. Soft. Barely there. I hoped it wouldn’t wake her. I dressed quickly in a simple grey top and sweatpants. I was free of palace duties today and planned on dealing with Lucien. The air outside was sharp with morning cold. I took a deep breath, letting the scent of damp snow clear my head. Then I caught it, Lucien's scent. Just who I was looking for. Sweat, steel, and that infur
ANNABETH’S POVI couldn’t sleep. I tried. Not with the moon that full, so full it felt like it was calling unto me and definitely Not with the silence in the room pressing down on me like a weight.I paced the length of the room for the tenth time, bare feet silent against the cold floor. The bed
TOMMY’S POVThe snow under my paws was silent. Too silent. We needed to be as discreet as we could.Seven of us. Seven wolves against a fortress full of Kael’s men. But we had a plan. And hopefully it'd work out.“Alright,” I muttered through the link. There were a lot more guards on board than
KAEL’S POV~The sky was pale gold when I slipped out of bed. I hadn’t slept. Not really. I’d spent the night watching her, memorizing the way her lashes rested against her cheeks, the way her breathing slowed when she felt safe. She was Mine. And today I had to leave her again to fulfill my d
Kael’s POV“Annabeth.” One word, and the whole room went still. She flinched like I’d snapped a whip, eyes flying to mine. For a split second, relief broke through the fear in her face. Then she remembered Lucien was still there, lounging like he owned the place. I stepped between them. My sh
