I shouldn’t have stepped out, I shouldn’t have left the house. I never even got the chance to say Goodbye. I can feel my heart aching, the same way it did when my parents died. I clunked to Grandfather as cried my heart out. One more hour and the tears barely fell anymore, I could hear my stomach grumbling, now wasn’t the time to eat but when I imagine the look on Grandfather’s face, when he finds out that I skipped my meals. How could I eat here when he was poisoned by the food here. I stepped out of my room down the stairs, to get a cup of water, I could hear the faint sound of a grunt until I arrived at an open door. Alfred sat on the bed with a first aid box beside him, I had completely forgotten that he was shit earlier. “Can I come in” I asked. He raised his head to me and nodded. “I never got a chance to thank you for saving my life. So thank you” He let out a soft smile, something I thought a face like his would never bring forth, so as not to disfigure his dazzling feature. But his smile was just as beautiful as he was. I moved closer to him, the bullet had grazed past his shoulder, he could barely reach it because of his muscles. “Let me” I say reaching for the spirit, I dipped the cotton wool into it and pressed it against the injury. I could hear a low grunt from him, he is trying hard not to make any sound. “You can scream if you want to” I teased him but he didn’t say a word. I reached for the needle and stitched him up, all thanks to the medical program I had signed up some summers ago. Once I was done, I wrapped his injury in a band-aid. “Thank you” he says as he wears his shirt. I take a seat on the bed, it’s soft just like mine, able to sink you into its comfort. “Why?” I asked. “What?” He inquired. “Why did you save me?” “It’s my job” We sat there quietly, my eyes pinned on the brown couch in front of me. Two lives would have been lost today, mine and my Grandfather, somehow I was able to escape it because of Alfred. But Grandfather wasn’t so lucky. “Thank you again for everything” I say, this time referring to when he held me tightly in his arms. I slowly turn towards him to find his eyes on me, close enough to notice his thick long lashes. “I don’t know what I would have done without you” I whispered. He slowly blinks revealing those delicate blue eyes, and I couldn’t stare away. *** It’s the dawn of the next day, preparation for Grandfather’s burial had already begun. I am in study reliving the last moment we spoke when a figure walked in. He was the same man I saw with my Grandfather. “Hello Miss Liliac, my name is Mr Maverick. I was your Grandfather’s lawyer” “Hello, nice to meet you” I reached in a handshake. “What brings you here?” I asked as we both took our seat. “Before your Grandfather died, he had written his will. I have invited the whole family for the reading of the will. They will be here in a couple of minutes” he stated. Standing outside the door was Alfred, he had his arms behind his back. He hadn’t left my side from the minute Mr Maverick walked in. “Is it true that he was poisoned?” I diverted the question, I didn’t care about the will. Beck had told me that it was poison that killed my Grandfather, I wanted to be sure. If that were true then I wasn’t safe in this house, “Yes, he was killed by a poison that takes longer to effect, he needed to have more than one drop each day for months until the poison finally took over and killed him. I had Beck investigate the cooks and someone was missing that day, the woman who had served him the tea.” “She did it” “I would believe so” he concur. “Find her and bring her to me” I ordered and he nodded. The sound of two cars pulling into the estate cut us off, I stepped out of the study with Maverick behind me. Waltzing in like he owned the place was, Mr Wyatt Roman, Son of Roman Squarez, my uncle. He wore a white suit, a black hat and some fancy shoes, he didn’t look like he was mourning his father at all. Beside him was a woman in a bright red dress matching her red lipstick, the thin part of her lips curved into a smirk once she set her eyes on me. Following behind them was Marcel, their son and my cousin, he wore a shiny silver suit and black vintage shoes, the watch on his wrist screaming luxury. He was splitting image of his father. He pulled down his sun glasses to catch a glimpse of me before heading for the mini bar to get a drink. The last time I saw them was after my Parent’s funeral, they were banished by Grandfather to ever step their foot in this house. Now that he was gone, they couldn’t care less as they bounced in here with smiles on their faces. I walked down to my Uncle, “Welcome Uncle Wyatt” He didn’t so much as bat an eye at me, rather he walked towards the couch and slouched in it. His wife followed brushing against my shoulder, I almost lost my balance if it wasn’t for Alfred who held me by the waist. “I’m okay” I said to him and fixed my shirt. Marcel walked past me then paused and turned towards me, “it’s good to see again Cousin, you haven’t changed a bit” that was meant to be an insult from him but I waved it away. “Maverick, get this done with. I can still feel the presence of that filthy old man in here. I don’t want to catch a ghost” Uncle Wyatt murmured. I had almost forgotten how insensitive he was and how much he hated his father, the feeling was mutual. Growing up, he tried so much to meet up with my Father’s accomplishments but he couldn’t. My father easily became the favorite child and he became an outcast. From there he developed his careless attitude, he became as he grew older and Grandfather hated him even more. Maverick sat before us, I took a seat at the dinning table while Alfred stood beside me, the feeling of knowing that he was close by made me feel warm. “I will start by reading the letter Mr Roman had written…” “Skip that, read the fucking will” Uncle Wyatt interrupted him. Maverick raised his head to me and I nodded, if reading the will was going to get them out of here quicker then I was up for it, I could read the letter later in my room. “…my estate and the company, with my international assets in the US and Germany, I leave to my Granddaughter, Liliac.” “What?” Uncle Wyatt bolted to his feet in shock.I woke to a set of eyes on me, a possessive kind, with not even a blink. Alfred had placed a chair by my bed, his hands between his legs, holding the chair like it was too little for him, I could see his vein streaking out of his arm while he devoured me with his eyes. It felt so intense that I thought I might have done something wrong. “Good morning” I rubbed my eyes, his eyes followed me so intensely as I sat up. I wanted to ask how I got back home but I knew he brought me home, I don’t just remember the details of what happened. Then I felt a sharp pain in my head, like my head was about to fall off my neck, it was so painful that I held my head in my palm. “How much did I drink?” I questioned my actions, regretting it already. I raised my head to him, running my fingers through my hair, noticing that he hadn’t responded to my greeting. His facial expression had changed to anger, I could tell from how tight his jaw knitted together. I remember bits of what ha
I don’t feel like going home after the ordeal I had with the Gretes family, I had some steam to cool off. “Benny” I called the driver. “Yes ma’am” “What clubs are the best here?” I could see Alfred staring at me from the rear mirror, I ignored his stare as I fiddled through my phone. “Club kite” Benny recommended. “Let’s go there, you can clock out when we get there” he nodded his head. When we got to the club, it was as unique as he had said, It had twin entrance with a long line for each. “How do I get in?” “Give me a minute” Benny answered and stepped out of the car, he walked towards the bouncer in the front and gave him handshake, the man gave him two cards. Then he walked back to us, I can assume he gave him money for our passes. “These are the vip cards” he gave them to me and Alfred, I could hear Alfred grunt but he took the card anyways. Benny drove to the back giving us a better entrance. We walked in through the back door, the loud music began ec
It’s noon of the next day, weekend to be precise. We arrived at the Gretes Mansion, smaller than our estate but big enough to see how powerful they were. We walked past five guards on our way in, until we finally got to the house. Mr Gretes was seated in the front, two of his sons were seared on the right while one of them stood behind, leaning on the wall. Gretes has five children, Three boys and two girls. Yet there wasn’t a sign of a female in the room except my presence. I found him seated high and mighty in his chair, a displeased look on his face, the moment he saw me. “Mr Gretes, it’s nice to finally meet you” I greeted, he just let out a grunt and gestured for me to sit. I could feel the disrespect but ignored it, when you are new to the world, you always have to prove yourself, and I definitely don’t mind that. I sat on the couch to my left while Alfred stood behind me, “What brings you to my home?” He asked tapping his half lit cigarette down the glass
I woke up expecting it to bright outside but it was still dark, I picked up my watch to see that it was past 9pm. I already knew how I winded up in bed after dozing off in the car, Alfred carried me. The smell of food filtered into my room, immediately my stomach began to grumble. I stepped out of my room and towards the kitchen where I found him. He had on grey sweatpants and a brown fitted top, clinging to his muscles. His arms bulged as he flipped over the frying pan, the fire from the gas flares. I know he had always looked good but this was a different kind of good, the kind that makes you want to strip him just to see what he has to offer. I leaned against the door watching him, my lips dry as I try to swallow what’s left of my tongue. I could feel the room getting hot, not just from the heat of his cooking but from… you know what I mean. Concentrate Liliac, I warned myself. “What are you making?” I picked an apple from the basket and threw my ass over the c
“You should watch the way you speak to me Mr Wyatt” I boldly faced him, I had enough of him acting like he was on top of me. For the sake of family I hadn’t thrown him out of the meeting but he keeps pushing for it. He wouldn’t even be considered as family if Grandfather was seated here today. “You must be crazy to think that I would let you do that, our family has a long tradition of donating for charity” he expelled my words to remind me of family. Family! “Our family, last I remember you were disowned, you no longer bear the family name. What right do you have to say our family?” I asked him. His mouth was sealed, he hadn’t expected me to air his personal matters in front of the board but since he chose to disrespect repeatedly, it was my duty to put him in his place. The meeting had turned into a full blown fight between me and my uncle, eyes widened at us. Neither of us wanted to submit to the other. I had every right because I was the heir and he claims to have
It was my first day at the office since I came back, I had been putting it off or days but it had finally caught up with me. I knew the perks of running a company, I have a Bsc in Business management but I still couldn’t shake off the nervousness I was feeling. I am a beautiful white gown that stops at my knee, I had combed my hair to the back while I stared at my reflection in the mirror. I stepped down the stairs until I got to the door, I found Alfred standing by the car. His eyes sparkled once he saw me, “You…look beautiful” he said. “Thank you” I replied. Since he hadn’t fully healed, I hired a driver that would be taking me to work until Alfred was okay, he may have insisted to drive me but I didn’t want to pressure him with that. We finally arrived at the office, it was just as big as the estate but with three more floors, the staffs had all gathered by the lobby to greet their new CEO. “Welcome ma’am” a woman in her mid thirties, wearing a brown shirt and black
