CAOMH'S POV

The mention of Meghann’s name sent a sharp spike of pain right through my chest, but I ignored it. I kept my face completely blank.

"But you must have known before then," I pushed gently, keeping my tone conversational. "Women usually know the signs before a healer confirms it. When did you first start feeling sick, Dreda? Was it right after the solstice feast?"

Dreda’s breathing hitched. Her eyes darted toward the door, just for a split second, before locking back onto my face.

CULLEN'S POVI stared down at him. The sheer, staggering audacity of the question was almost laughable."You are asking me to share classified Arden intelligence regarding your own Luna," I said, my voice dropping into a lethal, quiet register. "That is a very pathetic question, Caomh.""I just need to know!" Caomh pleaded, his hands curling into tight fists at his sides. The mask of pride cracked completely, leaving him raw and bleeding in the open air. "I need to know if the dates line up. I need to know if she saw a healer in November. Please, Cullen. If you know something, you have to tell me."I stepped away from the stone wall. I closed the small gap between us, using my height and my broad shoulders to tower over him. He instinctively shrank back, his chin tipping up to maintain eye contact."You want the truth?" I sneered, letting the icy disdain coat every single word. "

  • The Mate He Rejected   CHAPTER 54: Cold Mocking Disdain

CULLEN'S POVThe eastern pavilion of the neutral compound was entirely exposed to the elements, a wide expanse of pale gray stone held up by tall, ancient columns. The morning air was freezing, biting through the fine charcoal fabric of my suit jacket. A steady, freezing rain fell in thick sheets just beyond the stone steps, filling the space with the loud, rhythmic drumming of water hitting the courtyard.I stood near the edge of the pavilion, a cup of bitter black coffee turning cold in my hand. The dark, rich taste of the coffee did nothing to settle the feral, restless energy pacing just beneath my skin. My mind was still trapped in the quiet, dusty aisles of the grand library from the night before. I could still feel the soft, frantic heat of Meghann’s mouth against mine, the way her nails had dug into my shoulders as she surrendered completely in the shadows. For five years, I had kept my distance to keep her

Her eyes darted toward the door, just for a split second, before locking back onto my face."Yes," she answered, her voice pitching slightly higher. "It was... it was right after the solstice. Just a few days later. I felt awful.""A few days?" I repeated, raising an eyebrow. "That is very fast to show symptoms.""Werewolves heal fast, Caomh," Dreda countered, her tone turning slightly defensive. "Our bodies process things differently. You know that.""I do," I nodded slowly. "But I was looking through some old pack ledgers today. We are supposed to update the council on our medical histo

  • The Mate He Rejected   CHAPTER 52: A Beta And A Puppet

CAOMH'S POVThe air in the Silver Moon wing of the neutral compound felt heavy, smelling faintly of damp stone and the sharp, cloying perfume Dreda always wore.I walked down the dim corridor, my boots making no sound against the worn runner rug. I didn't want to see anyone. I didn't want the polite, rehearsed bows of my guards. I just wanted to reach the quiet sanctuary of my own suite, pour a very strong drink, and figure out how to stop the frantic, restless energy that had been clawing at my chest all day.Seeing Meghann at the auction today had completely undone me. Watching her outbid Dreda, watching her stand beside Cullen Arden with a crown of untouchable confidence, had triggered a deep, gnawing regret that I couldn't push back down.I turned the corner, my suite just a few yards away. Then, the sound of voices cut through the stillness. They were sharp, hushed, and frantic. I stopped instantly, my spine pressing flat against the cold stone wall. I recognized the voices immed

  • The Mate He Rejected   CHAPTER 51: He Heard Every Word

The beam of a handheld lamp swept across the floor at the very end of our aisle, casting a long, bright streak of yellow light just twenty feet away from where we stood. My heart hammered a frantic, painful rhythm against my ribs. If a guard found the Alpha and Luna of the Arden pack tangled together in a dark corner of the archives, the political scandal would ruin everything we had planned. We needed the council to trust us, not catch us acting like feral rogues in the shadows. But the sheer, terrifying risk of getting caught sent a completely different kind of spike through my system. The danger mixed violently with the pooling heat in my stomach.Cullen felt my pulse jumping. He looked down at my flushed face. The corner of his mouth twitched into a dark, wicked smirk. He didn't pull away. While the guard’s footsteps echoed slowly down the adjacent row, Cullen shifted his hips forward. He entered me with a slow, torturous glide, filling me completely.I squeezed my eyes shut, biti

  • The Mate He Rejected   CHAPTER 50: Quiet In The Library

The grand library of the neutral compound smelled of dried parchment, flaking leather, and bitter lemon oil. Tall, towering bookshelves stretched toward the vaulted stone ceiling, casting long, dark shadows across the polished floor. In the center of the massive room, a small cluster of delegates stood gathered around a series of glass display cases. Elder Foster was currently droning on, his voice echoing off the stone walls as he detailed the history of the first territorial treaties signed by the original pack founders. It was incredibly tedious.I stood in the back row of the crowd, ignoring the ancient maps completely. I wore a long, form-fitting dress of dark midnight blue silk, the fabric entirely bare across my shoulders.I couldn't focus on the exhibit. My mind was completely consumed by the man standing right beside me.Every time I looked at Cullen’s sharp profile, my pulse jumped in a frantic, irregular rhythm. The truth of what he had confessed in his office hours ago pla
