Maeve

The tip of the silver pen hovered over the page.

One movement. That was all it would take to surrender everything.

My freedom. My future. My body, if I failed.

The enormous registration book rested open across the polished black desk in the entrance hall of Blackthorne Mansion. Its pages were made from thick cream-colored parchment, each sheet crowded with signatures written in ink ranging from elegant gold to ordinary black.

Some names had been written in neat, careful strokes.

Others slanted wildly across the paper, as though the women holding the pen had been trembling too badly to control their hands.

A few had left smudges.

One woman had pressed hard enough to tear the parchment beneath the final letter of her name.

I understood why.

The moment I signed, I would no longer be a guest. I would be prey.

“Miss?”

The registrar’s voice was polite, but impatience sharpened the edges of it.

I looked up.

The elderly woman behind the desk wore a severe black gown that covered her from throat to wrist. Her silver hair had been twisted into a knot so tight it pulled the wrinkles smooth around her temples. A chain of tiny iron keys hung from her waist, and a golden crescent moon rested against the hollow of her throat.

Her expression suggested she had watched hundreds of women stand exactly where I stood now.

Some frightened. Some excited. Some desperate. She no longer cared which one I was.

“If you require more time,” she said, “you may step aside and allow the next participant to register.”

A woman waiting behind me released a quiet, irritated breath.

I tightened my fingers around the pen. “I don’t need more time.”

That was a lie.

I had needed more time for the last three years. More time to find Mara before it came to this. More time to prove Alpha Ronan Caine had taken her. More time to discover another way inside the fortress he called a pack house.

I had searched every neighboring territory. Bribed messengers. Followed rumors into rogue camps and abandoned villages. I had questioned traders who passed through Caine land, warriors who had once served under Ronan’s father, and servants dismissed after the massacre.

Most refused to speak his name. Those who did lowered their voices first. The Ruthless Alpha. The Mad Wolf of the North. The Beast of Caine Territory.

Every story changed depending on who told it, but they all ended the same way.

Ronan Caine had murdered his own family. Then he had locked my sister beneath his home so she could never reveal what she had seen.

The letters proved it. At least, they proved Mara was alive. That was enough.

I lowered the pen. The metal nib scratched across the parchment.

Maeve Cross.

The letters appeared darker than every other name on the page. Perhaps that was only because I knew what they meant. Perhaps the book itself understood I had not come here seeking wealth, protection, or a powerful mate.

I had come to commit murder.

The registrar’s eyes dropped to my name. Her expression changed. Only slightly.

The corner of her mouth tightened. Her gaze lifted to my face again, sharper this time, as though she were comparing me to someone she remembered.

“Cross,” she repeated.

The woman behind me stopped shifting impatiently. A hush spread through the nearest part of the entrance hall. Not complete silence.

Blackthorne Mansion held too many people for that.

Servants moved through the crowd carrying trays of champagne and dark wine. Women whispered among themselves beneath enormous crystal chandeliers. Warriors stationed near the walls adjusted their weapons and scanned the room for trouble.

But the conversations closest to the desk softened. Several heads turned. I felt their attention settle over me.

The Cross name had once meant something.

RonanMy lips traced down the column of her throat. Bruising kisses, she'd feel them tomorrow, marks I wanted her to see in every reflection. She'd remember this. She'd remember that she didn't stop me.Her pulse hammered beneath my tongue. Racing, wild, the rhythm of a doe who'd finally let the wolf catch her."Your heart," I murmured against her skin, "is beating faster than when you fought me.""I know.""Tell me why."She didn't answer. Couldn't, maybe. Her fingers had stopped pushing and started gripping, twisting in the fabric of my shirt. Holding on.I pulled back just enough to look at her. The moonlight silvered her skin, traced the curves of her breasts, the elegant line of her collarbone. Her chest rose and fell with ragged breaths. Dirt still streaked her cheek. Blood still rimmed her nails. She'd never looked more magnificent."You're shaking," I said."Anger.""Liar."Her eyes flashed. But beneath the fury, I caught it, the confusion, the shock of her own response. She d

RonanMaeve retreated... one step, two, before she realized I was guiding her. She stopped, eyes sharp, suddenly wary. Behind her, the trail narrowed, flanked by a wall of thorns on one side and a steep rock face on the other. She’d backed herself into the only clearing nearby without a way out.She glanced over her shoulder, saw her mistake, and stiffened.“You chose this clearing,” she accused.“I chose you.” My voice was low, rough with hunger.“That isn’t romantic.”“I wasn’t trying to be.”But the bond betrayed me, a tightness in my chest, a flicker of something I hadn’t wanted to name. I never learned how to offer softness, or gentle words, or flowers. What I offered was pursuit, protection, the promise that no other would ever touch her so long as I breathed. Dark things. Honest things.Maeve raised her blade, daring. “Come closer.”My wolf howled in answer. I closed the distance in a heartbeat. She struck, wild. I caught her wrist, and she punched my jaw with her free hand, he

RonanThe forest thickened as Maeve plunged deeper, shadows swallowing the silver edges of moonlight. She slowed enough to keep from stumbling, but she refused to stop, refused to give me the satisfaction.I could feel her sense me closing in. The moment she realized I was near, her shoulders went rigid, her breathing sharpened. She glanced over her shoulder, nothing but darkness. I moved parallel, keeping out of sight.“You keep looking back,” I called, my voice drifting like fog.Her head snapped toward the sound. “I’m checking for rabid animals.”“You found one.”She snorted. “Unfortunately.”I crossed in front of her, sliding between trees. “You don’t sound frightened.”“I’m not,” she snapped.“That’s a lie.”She shoved through a curtain of branches. “I’m not afraid of you.”Another lie, but not a complete one. Maeve feared what I could do, but not enough to submit. That was the difference that kept me smiling.“You should be,” I told her, letting the hunger in my tone curl around

RonanMaeve started to run again. And without a beat, I followed. The forest bent around me willingly. I knew how to move through it without disturbing the branches, how to place my feet so the leaves did not betray me, and how to allow my scent to drift in one direction while I approached from another. She ran north, heart pounding, until she dropped behind a fallen tree. I paused, several yards out, felt her breathing shift, go shallow and quiet. She was hiding. Clever. If I wanted, I could walk straight to her.Instead, I circled the clearing, letting her think she’d set the game.A flicker of anticipation sparked in the bond... she wanted me to take the bait. Her trap. I scanned the trees and spotted it: a thick branch bent low, tied with a strip of dark cloth, sharpened stakes along its length. Step across the hidden line, and it would swing straight for my chest.I almost admired her craft enough to trigger it. Almost.Instead, I stepped around, slipped a hand beneath the branc

  • The Mate Hunt   Chapter 22: Trap or not

RonanMaeve ran beautifully when she was angry. Not with grace or delicacy... no, she tore through the forest like she wanted to set it ablaze. Every stride was a challenge, every leap over a root an act of defiance. She ripped branches from her path, punished the ground beneath her boots, her body a wild, unyielding force. There was nothing soft or frightened about her, she ran to conquer, not escape. And it was intoxicating.I followed from the shadows, close enough to hear the furious rhythm of her breath, far enough that she could not spot me. Moonlight fractured through the canopy in silver slivers, illuminating tangled leaves, pale stones, and the fleeting glint of Maeve’s dark hair. She’d torn it loose from its braid. Now it streamed behind her, wild and untamed, catching the moonlight like a banner before vanishing into the shadows. My wolf tracked her every movement, hunger curling through me.Mine. The word pulsed, raw and possessive, and I didn’t bother to challenge it.Sh

Maeve“Yes,” I breathed, unable to hide the way my pulse leapt beneath his touch.Ronan’s thumb circled the spot on my throat, slow, possessive. The bond between us thrummed, thick and electric, as if my veins had been carved into tuning forks for his want.“You’d put yourself in another man’s hands just to avoid mine,” he murmured, voice tight with hunger, “because you hate being touched by me.”I set my jaw. “I considered saving my sister.”His eyes narrowed, that golden fire simmering. “And if he’d asked you to kiss him for her freedom?”Anger flared, sharp as a blade. “I would have cut out his tongue.”His mouth quirked, dangerous and delighted. “That answer may have saved his life.”“You were about to kill him.”“I still might.”He leaned in. The distance between our mouths vanished, only a breath, a promise, separated us. I could smell blood on him, feel the heat pouring off his skin, sense the anger trembling just beneath the surface. My own body betrayed me; every nerve lit up
