Chapter 1

Rain streaked the Manhattan skyline when the anesthesia finally released me.

The heart monitor kept beeping, steady and indifferent, as if it needed to remind me that I was still alive. My daughter, who had lived beneath my heart for thirty-four weeks, had been placed inside a white bereavement blanket I couldn't bring myself to look at again.

When the nurse returned my phone, I had more than twenty unread messages.

Not one was from Dante.

I opened my chat with my attorney and typed one sentence.

[Prepare the divorce papers. Follow the prenup. I won't consider counseling or mediation.]

Then I sent Dante the same decision.

The man who hadn't answered while I bled inside a crushed car called almost immediately.

"You want a divorce?" His breathing was measured, the way it got when he was forcing himself to remain calm.

"Yes."

"Because I refused to play along with your test?"

He didn't sound furious. That would have hurt less. He sounded disappointed, as though I were the one who had failed him.

"Valentina showed me screenshots of your conversation with Sofia," he continued. "You planned to call us at the same time and see which woman Luca and I chose first. Elena, I can handle jealousy. I can handle you feeling threatened by my history with her. What I won't accept is you using our unborn child as leverage."

I stared at the IV bruising my hand until his words made sense.

Sofia and I had never planned a loyalty test. The screenshots could only have come from Valentina, and she knew exactly which nerve to hit.

Moretti men were raised among betrayals, payoffs, and people who smiled while calculating the price of a knife in the back. Nothing enraged them faster than the idea that someone was manipulating them.

Valentina had handed them a conclusion first. After that, every plea for help had been twisted to fit it.

"Dante, I didn't test you."

Silence held for two beats before his voice hardened. "Then explain this. Your appointment was normal in the morning, but hours later you claimed the baby was gone. At the same time, Sofia suddenly wanted to leave Luca. What are we supposed to think?"

My chest had already been split open, yet somehow it found room to break again.

"You're supposed to think we both lost our children."

"Enough."

He had never cut me off like that before.

"Valentina's heart rate went over one-eighty. She still has shrapnel lodged near her heart from the bullet she took for my mother. As a doctor, I couldn't abandon her."

"I never asked you to abandon a patient."

I had asked him to believe me once. I had asked him to hear his wife say, "I'm dying," and at least order a nurse to call emergency services.

The words stayed trapped behind my teeth.

Dante exhaled, rubbing his forehead if the rustle on the line was any indication. "We'll talk when you've calmed down. I'm not signing anything, and our child isn't a weapon you get to use in an argument."

The call ended.

I stared at the dark screen and laughed once, without humor.

[Once a man decides you're lying, even your death can become part of the performance.]

A muffled sob came from the other side of the room.

Sofia was awake. Her skin looked almost translucent, and both hands were pressed over her empty abdomen as though her body still believed there was someone left to protect.

She had walked out of the bakery carrying a warm paper box when she saw our Cadillac spin beneath the impact. The rear door had collapsed inward. She dropped the tart and pulled at metal hot enough to blister her palms. Glass cut her knees, but she rammed her shoulder against the jammed lock until it gave.

I was unconscious when she dragged me free.

She didn't wait for an ambulance. A shooting nearby had tied up the closest units, so she stopped a hotel shuttle, invoked the Moretti name, took the driver's keys, and drove me to St. Vincent herself.

Only after she reached the emergency entrance did she notice the blood soaking her skirt.

The strain and impact had caused a placental abruption. She saved my life and lost her son doing it.

"Did Luca call back?" I asked.

She shook her head and handed me her phone. The call log showed one conversation lasting thirty seconds.

Sofia had told him I'd been in a wreck and begged him to locate the vehicle and dispatch help. Luca had decided it was the second act of our scheme because Valentina's alarm had gone off at the same time, and a hooded figure had appeared on her backyard camera.

"You two keep accusing her of craving attention," he'd said. "Who is manufacturing a crisis right now? I'm handling a possible intrusion tied to the Moretti family. Don't drag police resources into a domestic stunt."

He had disconnected before Sofia could give him the intersection.

She looked at me, tears sliding soundlessly into her hair.

"I gave him a chance, Elena."

This time, I didn't tell her to forgive him.

The case lasted eight months.Valentina eventually accepted a plea agreement and received a lengthy prison sentence without the possibility of parole. The Morettis severed every business connection with the Bellini family, and the accounts used in the plot were frozen.Vittorio transferred part of the recovered legal assets into two maternal emergency funds. They were named for Lucia and Nicholas, the daughter and son Sofia and I never brought home.We didn't attend the dedication. Our grief didn't need an audience, and the Moretti family didn't get to tell our children's story for us.Dante survived the ethics investigation with his medical license intact, but he lost his position as director of trauma surgery. He moved to a veterans' hospital as a general surgeon and began weekly therapy.Luca left Major Crimes and transferred to the police academy, where he trained recruits in crisis response. He turned our phone calls into an anonymous case study and made every class repeat the sam

Vittorio Moretti came to the precinct the night Valentina was arrested. He brought no guards. Only his ebony cane. The man who could silence an entire dock with one look lowered his head when he saw Sofia and me."The Moretti family failed to protect you."Sofia's face remained blank. "We weren't attacked by a rival family."Vittorio's grip tightened around the cane. "I know."Valentina's malice had started the plot, but fourteen years of family indulgence had made it possible. The Morettis gave her access to private offices, security systems, foundation accounts, and medical information. In every conflict, they assumed she was the frightened one and someone else had caused the harm.Dante and Luca had simply enforced that bias when it mattered most. After questioning, prosecutors charged Valentina with two counts of attempted murder in the first degree, conspiracy, unlawful surveillance, and financial crimes. As officers led her from the interrogation room, she saw us and fought again

Police caught the Cadillac driver at the Port of New Jersey as he prepared to board a cargo ship bound for the Bahamas. His passport was issued under a false name. His suitcase held one hundred and twenty thousand dollars in cash and a brand-new Patek Philippe.Faced with attempted murder, leaving the scene, and identity fraud, he lasted two hours in interrogation."A woman hired me," he said, crushing a paper cup between his hands. "She told me to reach the maternity clinic at 10:40 and pick up two pregnant women. An armored truck would be coming through the intersection. When the light turned yellow, I was supposed to jerk the wheel into its lane and get out before the cops arrived. The rest of my money would be waiting."Marcus leaned forward. "Two women?""Yeah. The names were Elena and Sofia."Behind the one-way glass, cold spread from my fingertips to my chest. If Sofia hadn't stepped out for that apple tart, she would have been sitting beside me.Valentina hadn't arranged a scar

The armored truck belonged to a private cash-transport company. Its driver, Eric Nolan, resigned three days after the crash and left New York.Police found him in a Pennsylvania motel. He hadn't slept properly in a week.Someone had contacted him through an encrypted app and paid him fifty thousand dollars. The instructions were simple: follow his assigned route past the maternity clinic and, no matter what happened at the intersection, do not slow down early."I thought it was insurance fraud," Eric said, both hands locked behind his head. "The Cadillac swerved in front of me. I hit the brakes, but there was no room. I saw somebody in the back seat, and then... it was too late."The money hadn't arrived through a normal transfer. The buyer purchased casino chips, moved them through three shell companies, then converted them into a cashier's check. The Morettis knew that laundering method well. One look at the structure told Luca the person behind it had access to private-club settleme

Mediation was suspended.Luca notified Major Crimes that the collision might be an intentional attack and requested preservation orders for every relevant record. He didn't take the case himself. Because the victims were his wife and sister-in-law, he formally recused himself and handed everything to Detective Marcus Hale.It was the first professionally correct choice Luca had made since Sofia's call.It was also far too late to save anyone.Marcus began with a basic question: why had I been inside that Cadillac?"Valentina arranged it," I said. She had met us outside the maternity clinic and claimed a Moretti Foundation car was available. The vehicle carried a temporary foundation placard, and the driver wore the uniform of the family's security company. Before getting in, Sofia smelled apple pastry from the bakery across the street and insisted on buying a box. Valentina urged me to go ahead, promising the driver would loop back for her.The crash happened less than five minutes lat

Before I could answer, Luca's work phone rang. The officer on the line spoke so quickly that every word carried across the sudden silence."Detective Moretti, we have a development in the suspected vehicular attack outside St. Vincent's maternity clinic two weeks ago. The reporting party just submitted the medical records. The victims were Elena Moretti and Sofia Moretti. Neither baby survived."Luca stood there gripping the phone as though someone had fired a round straight through his chest. The courthouse noise seemed to vanish.Dante still had one hand beneath Valentina's elbow, but his fingers went slack. She whispered his name. He didn't hear her.His eyes stayed fixed on my abdomen, shifting from disbelief to clinical assessment. He saw the pallor beneath my makeup, the fading IV bruises on my wrist, the stiffness in my walk, and the edge of the surgical support band beneath my coat."Placental abruption?" he asked.I said nothing."Uterine rupture?" He moved toward me, then sto
