LOGINJarek's POV
But she did hear. And she sat at once, falling silent. Her shoulders hunched inward, and she hid her face in her hands, shaking. Fucking evil, I thought, careful not to look at Joe. My wolf growled louder, and I tried to ignore it. There were certain things that even an Alpha couldn’t go against. If her Alpha, her own brother, had agreed with the Elders that she would be given to the dark woods, I could do nothing about it. And even if I could, what then? Someone had to be sacrificed. If not an Omega nobody liked, then who? As callous as it was, Jessa wasn’t going to be missed. Her death would be the least painful. It didn’t help with the unsettled feeling that swept through me as us Alphas stood. Everyone was whispering again as Joe strode through the crowd and grabbed Jessa’s arm. His face was a blank mask. I was close behind him, and I expected, once more, for Jessa to act differently than she did. I thought she would whimper, beg, cry. Instead, she was quiet. She yanked herself away from her brother but then walked meekly beside him. “It’s a good choice,” someone in the crowd whispered as they passed. The rest of the packs fell into step behind the Alphas. “She might as well be dead,” someone else agreed. Jessa winced. She’d heard them. I wanted to step up closer and tell her that her sacrifice was honored, but those words would be hollow. Hadn’t that been exactly what I thought? Nobody cared about her. Nobody would miss her. Even her own brother wasn’t fighting for her. It was a good choice. A woman with large brown eyes sneered as Joe led Jessa past her. “Good riddance,” she said, loud enough that her voice rang through the hall. They don’t have to be cruel about it, I thought. I still thought that she should have been allowed to volunteer. Who knew, with her life the way it was, maybe she would have done this willingly. I hadn’t paid much attention to her myself, though I’d seen her around a few times. Omega Jessa. Limp, thin blonde hair with a full, curvy figure that would be attractive if she carried herself with more dignity. She walked with her head bowed to the ground, always muttering to herself. Prone to outbursts where she told people who weren’t even talking to her to shut up and leave her alone. She claimed to be talking to spirits, but there were no spirits in Silverwood. They didn’t like to be around civilization. Besides, people couldn’t actually see spirits. They were shades and shadows, nothing more. There was something wrong with her. Something that didn’t belong in the pack. Either she was making it all up, or there was something broken in her head, to see things that others didn’t. I’d heard plenty of stories that made me believe it was the latter. There was something wrong with her, and it was off-putting at best. Even still. She should have been given the chance to volunteer. She should have at least been warned ahead of time, so she didn’t have to deal with the emotions of being slated for death in front of the town that hated her. My wolf’s natural protectiveness of the weak was kicking in. I moved forward a little, walking closer to Jessa on her other side. “Your sacrifice will be remembered,” I told her in a low voice. She shot me a tear-filled, baleful look. “By who?” I fell back again, not certain how to answer. Once more, I was struck by the fact that she didn’t deserve this. What had she done to be so hated? But the Elders decided. Right? It had to happen, and it was better to be her than anyone else. I still wished I could say something to give her strength. Even with her back to me now, the look in those dark blue eyes of hers haunted me. So much hurt and anger in them. And hate. I’d never seen anyone look at me with such sheer hatred before. Maybe that’s why the Elders decided to sacrifice her. The rest of the packs slowly left us as we headed into the woods. We could have shifted to our wolf forms, but we didn’t, which made the trek longer than I thought necessary. But then, maybe Jessa didn’t have a wolf. I didn’t know one way or another. The redwoods grew thicker and taller as we made our way into the forest. Night fell and grew colder as the full moon rose. We finally made it to the edge of the dark woods, where the trees abruptly changed from massive, elegant redwoods to tightly packed, twisted pines and spruces. We all came to a stop and stared at Jessa. She stepped toward the thicket of dark trees, then stopped. “Joe,” she breathed, turning terrified eyes on him. “Please. Please don’t make me do this.” Joe didn’t answer. “Please,” Jessa begged, reaching for his sleeve. He jerked away from her. Jessa flinched back from him. She looked around at the rest of us, desperately searching. I leaned forward slightly, but before I could make up my mind as to whether I should say anything, her shoulders straightened. She pushed them back and lifted her head high. Without another word, she turned on her heel and marched into the dark woods, disappearing almost at once. As soon as she was inside, a jolt came through me. My feet brought me forward before I knew what I was doing. My wolf howled, thrashing in my chest. Blood pounded in my ears as only one thought went through my mind. Protect her. I started forward, my fingernails turning into claws. A hand grabbed me. “What the hell are you doing?” said another Alpha. I snarled, whirling with the intent to punch him in the face. I barely stopped myself. What was going on? My wolf howled again, growing more frenzied. Was I going crazy? What was wrong with me? I had no reason to go charging into the forest after Jessa, yet that was the only thing I wanted to do. As I scanned the gathered Alphas, I caught sight of two other faces just as shocked and determined as I felt. Something about seeing them snapped something inside of me. I shook off the Alpha holding me back and plunged into the forest. Hang on, Jessa. I’m coming.Ruby POVMarianne was reading a book, frowning, when Jessica and I entered her room. Though she hadn’t been exactly kept locked up for the past few months, she had been under what was essentially house arrest. While there were no pitchforks and torches or angry mobs, the townsfolk weren’t happy. Now that Jessica and I had both managed to win over a fair number of supporters—not to mention our Alphas—the distrust had fallen on her, now that it was known she was a witch.“Oh, good. You’re interrupting me just when they’re all about to start fucking. I think.” Marianne shook her head as she snapped the book shut. “That is one of the most confusing books I’ve ever written. I’m not sure if they’re having an orgy or there’s just a bunch of ghosts watching.”“Sounds intriguing. Maybe I’ll have to read it when you’re done,” Jessica said, sitting.I did as well. “It would be nice to read something other than those old tomes. But the good news is that we haven’t found any indications that the
Zach POVRuby lifted her hands again and let out a slow breath, lowering them toward the ground. The house fire died out at once. Beyond her, I saw Denric and Jarek rush to Jessica, Benson, and Cassian. Jessica was sobbing, and my heart stuttered until I heard the sound of the baby crying again.Cassian passed him to Denric, and I was relieved that none of them seemed to have any visible injuries. Jessica clung to Jarek, and he scooped her into his arms.At the firetruck, Laz turned off the hose. He, Billy, and Ralph stared at Marianne, who wove strings of light between her hands. I watched, fascinated. Seeing her using the magic with such deftness, a memory jogged in my mind. One that I had long repressed.I lowered my gaze, looking at my fellow Alphas. I braced myself for the sight, but they were all whole, no sign of injury on them. Before I could fully process this information, Ruby swayed on the spot.I started forward, but my muscles were frozen. Pain crept through me, and I gro
Joe POVI didn’t know what to do.Early this morning, I had taken breakfast up to Ruby, hoping to talk to her about what happened between her and Zach… only to find Zach already there. Ruby had looked at him with betrayal and anger as she lifted her chin toward him.“Stop pushing me,” she said, her voice like ice. “All of you. All you’ve done is push me. Push, push, push. You don’t listen to me. Right up until you decided to fuck me, you didn’t even see me. Now, you act as though you have a right to set the terms of our relationship?”I shook my head, grimacing as I swung a sledgehammer. It felt good to use my muscles and engage in manual labor. It helped me to work out some of my frustrations and confusion. That wasn’t the Ruby I knew. Was all the stress finally coming out?A giant wolf leaped over a pile of rubble. I tensed instinctively before I recognized it as Jarek. He shifted to human form, his eyes wild. The scent of smoke wafted over him.“Ruby’s been possessed,” Jarek panted
Ruby POVZach said we talked, and I told him to leave me alone. I didn’t remember having that conversation. It was cold in the house, even though I could hear the furnace continually running. We’d experienced a sudden drop in temperature the last few days. It was so miserably cold that there were some concerns about the well-being of the forest. All in all, our temperatures had fluctuated rapidly. Would it kill off some of the trees? Was there anything we could do to help them?As I stood at my window, staring out at the redwoods, I wondered if that was what the spirit wanted. Why it kept pulling me to the forest, why it did its damnedest to make me light fires. Maybe it wanted to destroy the redwoods. Why? To make the dark part of the forest, the place that was all twisted pines and shadow, expand?I thought it was gone. I thought we had defeated it, but it was back. I felt it, slithering through my bones. Flexing through my body as though I was a puppet. And worse, I couldn’t seem t
Kurt POVI leaned over the back of the couch and kissed Ruby’s neck. She sighed slightly as she leaned into me, the book in her hands drooping.“How has your day been?” I asked her.Ruby shook her head. “Same as yesterday.”I frowned as I sank onto the couch next to her. Joe was at the fireplace, lighting a fire; it was very cold in the house. I supposed that with Ruby bundled up in her blankets, she hadn’t felt how cold it was. When I took both of her hands in mine, though, they were like ice.She didn’t look at me, but I could still see the grief written in the lines of her face.If we only knew why Zach had suddenly moved out of the house… it was only two days since that beautiful moment on the mountain, but Zach refused to speak to Ruby, refused to see her, refused to explain why.My wolf howled in mourning to see my mate so heartbroken. I glanced at Joe, hoping he’d have some answers that I didn’t. But just as when we’d left the house that morning, he seemed just as helpless. I k
Zach POV“Yes, I think this would be a great spot,” I said, nodding as I looked at the derelict buildings my pack owned. There were some old Omega barracks close to the town center, ones that had been condemned after the new apartments had opened.“Should we begin tearing down the old buildings?” the head of my construction crew asked.I nodded. “Even if we go for a different spot for the aquatic center, these buildings need to be taken down. They’re a fire hazard.”My wolf was unhappy about leaving the house this morning. After Ruby’s success on the mountaintop and how pure and sweet the magic that surrounded us had been, I wanted to make the images we’d seen come true.We had spent most of the evening going over old plans Joe had made years ago for a town aquatic center—and most of the night engaged in some pleasant exercise. It was doubtful that Ruby was pregnant; logically, I knew that was good. We weren’t in the right spot to adjust to the added complication of a baby in our rela
Denric POVCassian carried Jessa now—I didn’t know when he picked her up—and he grinned at her, flirting lightly under his breath as he brought her into the living room. I closed the curtains, blocking out the group of disbelieving pack members gathered on the sidewalk outside.“Where’s your first-
Denric POVWe came out of the dark woods at a different place than we’d gone in. Somehow, we had managed to get miles off-course, even though we followed our own trail back. There was evil magic in that place, making things all twisted up. How else did it take so long to find Jessa when we’d run in
Cassian POVJessa Malraux. Big boobs, nice ass, a bit thicker overall than I usually liked them, but still hot when she put any effort into her appearance.I’d thought about fucking her in the past. Thought about seeing how hard she could grip me with those luscious thighs of hers. But she never se
Jessa POV I was frozen to the spot, unable to even open my mouth to scream or beg for my life. It laughed, a hissing sound that made the short hairs on my arms stand on end. It stepped forward, reaching out its clawed hand. As soon as it touched me, pain ripped through my body. I twisted away, scr
