LOGINJessa's POV
“Weirdo,” Lizzie said. She was the one who had my duffle bag and was currently tossing out my clean clothes onto the lawn. “Oh, what’s this? A thong! What do you need a thong for?” She shrieked in laughter as she waved my underwear over her head. Great. Now I was going to have to wash it all again. “Ewww, why are you playing with Crazy Jessa’s dirty undies?” Evelyn scoffed. Lizzie shrieked and dropped the bag and my underwear. She made a big show of wiping her hands off on Malcom, who in turn made a big deal out of being disgusted. I kept quiet as I started to pick things up, not meeting any of their eyes. This bunch were the ones I was most likely to run into in the mornings. They liked to stay out drinking until the morning hours. “You never answered us,” Malcom said, stepping on my shirt when I went to pick it up. “What are you doing playing with rocks when you should be working?” My mind cast around, trying to think of what I could say to make them leave me alone. I couldn’t tell the truth. My connection with spirits was what got me in this position in the first place. A lie? I was never very good at lying. I tugged on my shirt, hoping he’d just step off it. He shoved my shoulder, making me stumble. “Hey! I asked you a question.” “My brother wanted me to get to his house early,” I said. Best to pretend like nothing was happening with the rocks at all. “He’ll be upset if I’m not there when he wants me.” Invoking Joe was always a fifty-fifty shot. Sometimes it was enough to make people remember that I was an Alpha’s sister, even if that Alpha didn’t like to claim me. In those cases, they usually backed off quickly, especially if their interference would end up inconveniencing him. Other times, they knew that it wasn’t them that would be in trouble if Joe got angry. I’d be the one to suffer and who would believe me of all people? Malcom snorted and moved off my shirt. I picked it up and shoved it into my duffle bag. It was stained with green. “Freaky weirdo,” he grunted, ramming his shoulder against mine as he passed me. I hurried away, keeping my head bent. Their footsteps faded in the opposite direction I was going and I let out a sigh of relief. Until a high-pitched wail made me wince. The spirit was back. It buzzed around my head, flying in circles so tight it made my head spin. I bit my lips together, grimacing. “Go away,” I hissed. “You promised! You promised!” it shrieked. I closed my eyes. “And you saw what just happened. Leave me alone before more of them show up. Those rocks are just going to get knocked down again.” “You promised!” My head hurts. It was just like a spirit to not leave it alone. I was ostracized by every fucking person in this town, including my own family, yet the spirits never left me alone. It wouldn’t be so bad if there was one other person I could talk to, but who was I supposed to talk to? Should I go up to my bullies and tell them about the annoying spirits screaming in my ears day and night? “Hey, girlie, I’m talking to you!” the spirit wailed as I kept walking. I shook my head, walking faster. It was impossible to outrun the little bugger, but I had to try. My nostrils flared as I gripped my bag tighter. “Hey! Hey, you,” the spirit yelled shrilly. “You promised! You promised! You promised!” I whirled, my head snapping up. “Leave me the fuck alone!” I shouted. Only for ice to wash through me. The air disappeared from my lungs and I felt about two inches tall as I found myself staring directly into the grey eyes of Alpha Cassian Varrick. Cassian was a massive Alpha, with the body of a professional wrestler—probably because he spent most of his time wrestling other men, in wolf and human form. His sleek black hair was oiled back from his face today, and he wore a pair of jeans and nothing else. It showed off both full-sleeve tattoos and the others that trailed over his chest and torso. “Leave you the fuck alone?” Cassian asked, arching one black brow. He chuckled, a low, dangerous sound. “And here I was, just trying to ask why you’re leaving your clothes all over my lawn.” I glanced down along the path I’d just walked. Various garments—including the offending thong from before—lay in my wake. The zipper of my duffle bag had split open again. Instinct told me to drop to my knees and beg him to forgive my rudeness. Cassian was one of Alpha Denric’s best friends. Denric Wystan was one of the main people who had tormented me for pretty much my whole life. Denric was five years older than I was, and when I was five, I’d told him about the spirits. I thought it would impress him, that it meant I was special. At the time, I’d had a raging crush on him. He’d known I liked him, and he’d punished me for it ever since. While Cassian himself was never a main antagonist in my life, he was often there with Denric. He thought of me as a waste of space, just like everyone else in this town did. He might punish me for not groveling, but a girl had to have her pride. “A gentleman would have picked up my clothes for me,” I said, backtracking as I started gathering the clothes. Cassian stepped aside and watched me. “An Alpha isn’t a gentleman. What are you doing out here, anyway?” I shoved my clothes back into the duffle bag and held the busted zipper shut with one hand. I ignored his question. “Excuse me, Alpha Cassian. I have a lot of work to do.” I marched away, my head held high. This time, the spirit didn’t follow. But I felt Cassian’s eyes on me for some time.Ruby POVMarianne was reading a book, frowning, when Jessica and I entered her room. Though she hadn’t been exactly kept locked up for the past few months, she had been under what was essentially house arrest. While there were no pitchforks and torches or angry mobs, the townsfolk weren’t happy. Now that Jessica and I had both managed to win over a fair number of supporters—not to mention our Alphas—the distrust had fallen on her, now that it was known she was a witch.“Oh, good. You’re interrupting me just when they’re all about to start fucking. I think.” Marianne shook her head as she snapped the book shut. “That is one of the most confusing books I’ve ever written. I’m not sure if they’re having an orgy or there’s just a bunch of ghosts watching.”“Sounds intriguing. Maybe I’ll have to read it when you’re done,” Jessica said, sitting.I did as well. “It would be nice to read something other than those old tomes. But the good news is that we haven’t found any indications that the
Zach POVRuby lifted her hands again and let out a slow breath, lowering them toward the ground. The house fire died out at once. Beyond her, I saw Denric and Jarek rush to Jessica, Benson, and Cassian. Jessica was sobbing, and my heart stuttered until I heard the sound of the baby crying again.Cassian passed him to Denric, and I was relieved that none of them seemed to have any visible injuries. Jessica clung to Jarek, and he scooped her into his arms.At the firetruck, Laz turned off the hose. He, Billy, and Ralph stared at Marianne, who wove strings of light between her hands. I watched, fascinated. Seeing her using the magic with such deftness, a memory jogged in my mind. One that I had long repressed.I lowered my gaze, looking at my fellow Alphas. I braced myself for the sight, but they were all whole, no sign of injury on them. Before I could fully process this information, Ruby swayed on the spot.I started forward, but my muscles were frozen. Pain crept through me, and I gro
Joe POVI didn’t know what to do.Early this morning, I had taken breakfast up to Ruby, hoping to talk to her about what happened between her and Zach… only to find Zach already there. Ruby had looked at him with betrayal and anger as she lifted her chin toward him.“Stop pushing me,” she said, her voice like ice. “All of you. All you’ve done is push me. Push, push, push. You don’t listen to me. Right up until you decided to fuck me, you didn’t even see me. Now, you act as though you have a right to set the terms of our relationship?”I shook my head, grimacing as I swung a sledgehammer. It felt good to use my muscles and engage in manual labor. It helped me to work out some of my frustrations and confusion. That wasn’t the Ruby I knew. Was all the stress finally coming out?A giant wolf leaped over a pile of rubble. I tensed instinctively before I recognized it as Jarek. He shifted to human form, his eyes wild. The scent of smoke wafted over him.“Ruby’s been possessed,” Jarek panted
Ruby POVZach said we talked, and I told him to leave me alone. I didn’t remember having that conversation. It was cold in the house, even though I could hear the furnace continually running. We’d experienced a sudden drop in temperature the last few days. It was so miserably cold that there were some concerns about the well-being of the forest. All in all, our temperatures had fluctuated rapidly. Would it kill off some of the trees? Was there anything we could do to help them?As I stood at my window, staring out at the redwoods, I wondered if that was what the spirit wanted. Why it kept pulling me to the forest, why it did its damnedest to make me light fires. Maybe it wanted to destroy the redwoods. Why? To make the dark part of the forest, the place that was all twisted pines and shadow, expand?I thought it was gone. I thought we had defeated it, but it was back. I felt it, slithering through my bones. Flexing through my body as though I was a puppet. And worse, I couldn’t seem t
Kurt POVI leaned over the back of the couch and kissed Ruby’s neck. She sighed slightly as she leaned into me, the book in her hands drooping.“How has your day been?” I asked her.Ruby shook her head. “Same as yesterday.”I frowned as I sank onto the couch next to her. Joe was at the fireplace, lighting a fire; it was very cold in the house. I supposed that with Ruby bundled up in her blankets, she hadn’t felt how cold it was. When I took both of her hands in mine, though, they were like ice.She didn’t look at me, but I could still see the grief written in the lines of her face.If we only knew why Zach had suddenly moved out of the house… it was only two days since that beautiful moment on the mountain, but Zach refused to speak to Ruby, refused to see her, refused to explain why.My wolf howled in mourning to see my mate so heartbroken. I glanced at Joe, hoping he’d have some answers that I didn’t. But just as when we’d left the house that morning, he seemed just as helpless. I k
Zach POV“Yes, I think this would be a great spot,” I said, nodding as I looked at the derelict buildings my pack owned. There were some old Omega barracks close to the town center, ones that had been condemned after the new apartments had opened.“Should we begin tearing down the old buildings?” the head of my construction crew asked.I nodded. “Even if we go for a different spot for the aquatic center, these buildings need to be taken down. They’re a fire hazard.”My wolf was unhappy about leaving the house this morning. After Ruby’s success on the mountaintop and how pure and sweet the magic that surrounded us had been, I wanted to make the images we’d seen come true.We had spent most of the evening going over old plans Joe had made years ago for a town aquatic center—and most of the night engaged in some pleasant exercise. It was doubtful that Ruby was pregnant; logically, I knew that was good. We weren’t in the right spot to adjust to the added complication of a baby in our rela
Joe POV“So perfect,” Kurt crooned as he pushed her pants down. I twisted slightly to glance down. She wore a cute pair of panties with lace along the edges and a little bow at the front.“Better than last time, right?” Ruby asked, catching my gaze.I dipped my hand into her panties, my fingers se
Zach POVThe tension eased from my shoulders as I nodded silently. She wanted me there—and that thrilled me more than I cared to admit.“I’ll be right up,” I promised. Desire swept through me as it sank in what was going to happen. My wolf was beside itself with joy, but was I really ready for thi
Zach POVI smiled at the other Alphas, making a mental note of everyone I’d shaken hands with. Was there anyone I’d missed? I couldn’t afford to offend anyone accidentally at this time. Ah, right. I hadn’t thanked Quinn for his support. Not that he’d given it—but I supposed him staying quiet rather
Joe POVI shrugged. “I’ve had girlfriends in the past. They say that heat cramps are like period cramps ramped up, so I figured…” I gestured at everything. “Do you want anything else?”“Could you sit with me for a bit? I’d like to talk,” Ruby said hesitantly.I sank into a chair, uncertain. Was sh
