Chapter 3

Autor: Alyssa J
He turned, dug a tube of salve from his pocket, and tossed it to me.

The rarest kind, made from moonflower.

Celina watched him toss the precious salve at me, and something jealous flickered behind her eyes, there and gone.

I caught it. My fingertips were still bleeding.

“Sweetheart.” Caine turned to Celina, and his voice went tender in an instant. “Don't worry about the embroidery. I've already brought in Madame Lilian to do it herself.”

Celina's eyes lit. “Really?”

“She's the finest needleworker in the world,” he said. “A lot better than these clumsy hands.”

A quick flash of triumph crossed Celina's face, almost too fast to catch, and then she was beaming, throwing herself into his arms.

“Thank you, Caine. You're so good to me.”

I looked down at the salve in my hand, then at the cluster of needle marks on my fingers, and the bloodstain on the gown that would never wash out.

I let out a bitter little laugh and turned to leave—and the whole villa erupted with a shrill alarm.

“Ambush—” a guard screamed, and the rest was lost in the noise.

Then dozens of rogue wolves poured in, huge, eyes burning red.

Gunfire followed.

Not ordinary rounds.

A silver bullet whipped past my ear and struck the wall, and the silver dust it kicked up left the air scalding.

“Celina!” Caine's roar came from the living room, carrying a panic I'd never heard from him.

I ran toward it and saw he'd already shoved Celina behind him, using his own body to shield her from the front.

A rogue lunged for Caine. I didn't think—I threw myself in to intercept and opened its throat with a backhand swipe of my silver dagger.

After all these years, protecting Caine had become instinct.

Blood sprayed across me.

The next second another wolf came from the side, fangs sinking into my shoulder.

Pain detonated. I grunted and flung it off, blood pouring from the wound.

It flung a handful of silver dust onto the wound, and the burn drilled down toward the bone.

“Caine—” The cry tore out of me before I could stop it.

He didn't look back.

He was retreating toward the safe room, Celina shaking in his arms.

A third wolf came at me. I twisted aside, but my foot caught on a shard of glass and I went down hard.

Its claws raked across my stomach. I grunted, and blood soaked through my clothes in seconds.

I tried to push myself up, and my vision started to black out.

The last thing I saw before I went under was Caine carrying Celina through the safe room door.

The moment it shut, he didn't so much as glance back at me.

When I opened my eyes again, I was lying in a bed in the healing center.

The silver dust on my shoulder and stomach hadn't been cleaned out. The wounds were still burning.

But there wasn't a single healer in the room.

A nurse came in to dress them, sloppy and quick.

“Where are all the healers?” I rasped.

“Reassigned to look after Miss Celina,” she said, not lifting her head. “She scraped her hand. The Alpha said every healer was to focus on her first. Not a moment's delay.”

She paused, envy plain in her voice.

“He really does love her, doesn't he. Who wouldn't want to be treated like that.”

I closed my eyes and didn't answer.

She scraped her hand.

I was lying here with a bite to the bone in my shoulder and silver caked in my stomach, and they couldn't spare me one healer.

Then a commotion broke out in the hallway, the noise swelling.

The nurse hurried off to see.

I braced my shaking legs, pulled out the IV line, and forced myself off the bed.

Every step felt like the wounds tearing open all over again.

Bracing on the wall, I dragged myself, inch by inch, into the corridor.

A crowd had gathered in the center of the hall, the murmuring thick in the air.

I pushed through, and saw it—

Caine on one knee, a velvet box in his hands, and inside it an enormous diamond ring.

Celina stood in front of him, both hands clapped over her mouth, on the verge of tears.

“Marry me,” Caine said, his voice so tender it left me cold all over. “Not for the alliance. Not for anyone. Just because I love you.”

I stood at the edge of the crowd, covered in blood, and no one noticed me.

“Yes,” Celina cried, shocked and overjoyed.

He slid the ring onto her finger and kissed the back of her hand.

Watching it, every wound on my body stopped hurting.

It was as if my heart had simply shattered.

So he knew how to say I love you.

He'd always known.

He'd just never said it to me.

The instant the trigger pulled, a figure threw itself across the space. The silver bullet caught Caine square in the heart. He staggered, then crashed down onto the steps in front of me, blood surging from his chest, spreading dark across the tiles.I stood there, and what I felt was complicated. Then, the next second, the cold came back over me.Once, I had thrown myself in front of him the same way, without a thought for myself. And he hadn't spared me a single look. He'd turned and carried Celina—who had a scratch, nothing more—into the safe room. Two warriors had Celina pinned. Her face was nothing but raw, frenzied hate.“Why couldn't it have been you,” she shrieked at me. “This is your fault. If it weren't for you, Caine never would have noticed what I'd done. It's all your fault.”My father's face went black as a storm. The crushing weight of the Alpha King's aura blew out with no warning, and the whole hall shuddered faintly under it.Celina dropped as if an invisible hand had

Caine stood frozen, his head roaring.Princess? Heir to the North? The Omega he'd told to her face not to believe in fairy tales—was the daughter of the Alpha King?“You—” His mouth opened.“Out.” There was no feeling in the Alpha King's voice at all. He lifted a hand toward the warriors behind him. “My daughter's affairs are no concern of yours.”The warriors moved in and seized Caine by the arms.“Wait,” Caine fought against them. “Sophia, hear me out—”I didn't look at him.“Take him out.”As they dragged him from the hall, his face was white as paper, but his eyes stayed locked on me, like he was trying to carve me into them. When the banquet ended, I walked out the palace doors.Caine was still standing outside, a great armful of white lily of the valley against his chest, a ring box still in his hand.He stood ramrod-straight in the night wind, and none of it could cover the ruin underneath.“Sophia.” He rushed forward, his voice all pleading. “I picked these myself. You always w

(Sophia’s POV)In the banquet hall, the crystal chandeliers spilled soft light over everything.I stood with a glass in hand, seven or eight young, handsome Alphas crowded around me, falling over each other to please me, the talk drifting from the beauty of the North to what kind of gifts I liked.I kept a gracious smile in place, though my mind wasn't on a single word of it.A stir went through the crowd.I looked up and saw Caine walk in.He looked wrecked. Deep shadows under his eyes, his cheeks hollowed out, the once-straight line of his back faintly stooped, a worn-down, hollowed-out air clinging to all of him.His gaze swept the room and snapped to a stop on me.In that instant something lit in his eyes, disbelieving, almost joyful, and he came at me half-shoving through the crowd and caught my wrist.“Sophia.” His voice was hoarse and urgent. “What are you doing here? I've been looking for you everywhere. Do you have any idea how worried I've been?”I looked down at the hand gri

(Third person’s POV)The words went into Caine's chest like a branding iron driven home. His throat flooded with copper, and he swallowed back the mouthful of blood that nearly came up.He swept a cold look over Celina.“Dray. Take men to River and raze it. The whole pack.” His voice was pure murder. “Leave no one alive.”Celina's pupils contracted.“Caine, wait—” She thrashed against the chains, the iron clanging. “I can help you get her back. I can—”“Too late.” He turned.“Please—” Her voice climbed to a shriek. “Caine, I'm begging you—”He didn't look back.He led the assault on River himself. The wound in his chest was still seeping, his left arm barely able to lift. But the instant he shifted, all of it drowned under something darker and more savage. The River warriors scrambled to meet him and were no match at all.Caine ran at the front, fangs tearing through every body that stood in his way, as if that were the only outlet the storm in his chest could find. The stench of blood

(Third person’s POV)In the moment the pain and the betrayal went off together, only one thought was left in Caine's head. What had it felt like for Sophia. When she was framed. When she was exiled. She'd still been wounded then.Had she felt this too—every breath coming with a tearing edge to it?He couldn't even imagine how deep that despair had run.Rage swallowed every shred of reason.A suffocating Alpha aura blew out of him, and the air across the whole hall warped under the pressure. The nearest River warriors were flung straight off their feet, smashing through the round tables behind them.“Kill them.”That was all he said. The Silver Moon warriors snapped to it, turning from caught-off-guard to counterattack in a heartbeat, steel flashing as the fight ripped the hall apart.Caine pulled the silver dagger from his chest. Blood gushed from the wound, but he couldn't feel the pain.Or rather—next to the deeper wound inside him, that pain didn't even register. He drove into the t

Not a word had come back.He sat in the dressing room and let the attendants fix his tie, his mind a blank. He thought of the line of her downturned face when she sorted files. The way she always tasted his drink first to check the temperature. The wound she'd taken shielding him from a rogue. He shut his eyes, and the dull ache rolled through his stomach again. The ceremony hall was packed. Delegates from all seventeen Eastern packs had come, the mood solemn and charged.Caine stood before the altar, his gaze unfocused.Celina came toward him in a gown of pure white, smiling bright, and slid her arm through his.The officiant began to read the vows.“Do you take...”A face flashed through Caine's mind. Not the carefully made-up face in front of him. Another one—streaked with blood, jaw clenched, a face that had never once cried out in pain in front of him.
