Chapter 4

Penulis: Alyssa J
I lay in the healing center for three days.

It wasn't until the third night that a healer finally hurried in to tend my wounds.

She came in with Caine, Celina, and Celina's father—Gregor, Alpha of the River pack.

“Celina is the most precious thing I have.” Gregor's face was like iron. “She comes to your Silver Moon Pack and gets attacked on day one. I want an explanation.”

“I've already given the order. Every rogue who broke in will be executed,” Caine said.

“Not enough.” Gregor's gaze settled on me.

“Alpha Caine. Has it not occurred to you to ask how those rogues got into Silver Moon at all?” There was real malice in his voice.

A bad feeling rose in me.

Two River warriors stood behind Gregor, one of them holding a tablet.

“The proof is all here.” He slammed it down on the long table. “Your most trusted secretary was working with the rogues who hit us last night.”

“What?” Caine's expression changed.

He stared at the screen, disbelieving.

Transfer records. Encrypted chat logs. Timestamped to three hours before the ambush.

My heart plunged.

“This is fake—” I tried to speak.

“The account is yours,” Gregor cut me off, his voice cold as ice. “The passwords are yours. Even the device fingerprint on the messages is yours. How do you explain that, Caine?”

“An Alpha keeping a mistress is normal enough,” Gregor said lightly. “But I won't tolerate a mistress who threatens my daughter's life.”

“Exile her.” Gregor took a step closer, his voice slowing, turning coaxing.

“And I'll sign over three of the Eastern packs to Silver Moon, effective immediately. My daughter's safety is worth that price.”

The room fell dead silent.

I looked at Caine.

His brow was furrowed, his eyes full of conflict.

“Sophia wouldn't—”

Caine started to refuse, and Gregor cut him off again.

“If this woman isn't dealt with before the ceremony, the alliance is off. One woman, or your future as ruler of the East. Choose.”

Caine closed his eyes.

I watched the struggle drain slowly out of his face, watched it go colder and colder.

And my heart went colder with it.

Against his ambition, I was nothing.

“Dray,” Caine said, his voice like frost. “Exile her from the pack.”

At the order, Gregor and Celina smiled, satisfied.

“I knew you loved me best.” Celina rose on her toes and kissed Caine's cheek, sweet as sugar.

The smile stung my eyes raw.

Dray and his men dragged me out past the border, and the wounds split open again in the dragging, blood soaking my clothes.

Beyond the boundary line, the moonlight was bone-pale.

Celina was already waiting, two River warriors at her side.

A victorious smile sat on her face.

“Don't even think about going up against me. Next to me, you're nothing.”

She lifted a hand. The warriors lunged, fangs aimed at my throat.

The will to survive drowned out everything else.

I gritted my teeth, dragged my whole battered body upright, and shifted.

The agony of the old wounds tearing open exploded through me. I grunted against it.

The first warrior wolf came at me. I swung aside, sank my teeth into the side of its neck, and crushed its windpipe with everything I had.

The second hit me from behind, claws ripping into the old wound at my back. I snarled, turned, and clamped down on its throat until it went still.

The reek of blood hung in the air.

I turned toward Celina.

She backed up in terror, tripped, went down, her eyes full of fear.

I lunged, fangs a breath from her throat—

A crushing, suffocating Alpha aura slammed down out of nowhere.

Caine had come.

He gave me no time to react.

In the next instant he'd shifted into a massive black wolf, faster than I could track, and threw me off Celina with a single snap.

I hit the ground hard, the wound at my back splitting wide, blood reddening the grass under me.

Caine landed, his huge wolf form planted between me and Celina, guarding her trembling body.

He let out a low growl at me, his aura bearing down harder, until I could barely breathe.

He shifted back, and his voice carried a chill I'd never heard from him.

“Get out of Silver Moon Pack.” His eyes held no warmth at all. “Come near her again, and I'll kill you myself.”

I stared at him.

The man I'd guarded with my life for ten years.

I didn't say another word.

I pushed myself up on my broken back and limped out past the border, every step a fresh spike of pain.

Behind me, Caine bent and lifted Celina into his arms. She wound herself around his neck, buried her face in his shoulder, and wept.

He shielded her and turned, walking off in the opposite direction without once looking back.

Maybe ten minutes past the border line, the night roared with the sound of rotors.

A black helicopter set down a short distance away.

The hatch opened, and a column of heavily armed elites filed out in formation.

The one in front dropped to a knee and bowed his head to me.

“Princess.” His voice was steady, deferential. “The King has sent us to bring you home.”

The instant the trigger pulled, a figure threw itself across the space. The silver bullet caught Caine square in the heart. He staggered, then crashed down onto the steps in front of me, blood surging from his chest, spreading dark across the tiles.I stood there, and what I felt was complicated. Then, the next second, the cold came back over me.Once, I had thrown myself in front of him the same way, without a thought for myself. And he hadn't spared me a single look. He'd turned and carried Celina—who had a scratch, nothing more—into the safe room. Two warriors had Celina pinned. Her face was nothing but raw, frenzied hate.“Why couldn't it have been you,” she shrieked at me. “This is your fault. If it weren't for you, Caine never would have noticed what I'd done. It's all your fault.”My father's face went black as a storm. The crushing weight of the Alpha King's aura blew out with no warning, and the whole hall shuddered faintly under it.Celina dropped as if an invisible hand had

Caine stood frozen, his head roaring.Princess? Heir to the North? The Omega he'd told to her face not to believe in fairy tales—was the daughter of the Alpha King?“You—” His mouth opened.“Out.” There was no feeling in the Alpha King's voice at all. He lifted a hand toward the warriors behind him. “My daughter's affairs are no concern of yours.”The warriors moved in and seized Caine by the arms.“Wait,” Caine fought against them. “Sophia, hear me out—”I didn't look at him.“Take him out.”As they dragged him from the hall, his face was white as paper, but his eyes stayed locked on me, like he was trying to carve me into them. When the banquet ended, I walked out the palace doors.Caine was still standing outside, a great armful of white lily of the valley against his chest, a ring box still in his hand.He stood ramrod-straight in the night wind, and none of it could cover the ruin underneath.“Sophia.” He rushed forward, his voice all pleading. “I picked these myself. You always w

(Sophia’s POV)In the banquet hall, the crystal chandeliers spilled soft light over everything.I stood with a glass in hand, seven or eight young, handsome Alphas crowded around me, falling over each other to please me, the talk drifting from the beauty of the North to what kind of gifts I liked.I kept a gracious smile in place, though my mind wasn't on a single word of it.A stir went through the crowd.I looked up and saw Caine walk in.He looked wrecked. Deep shadows under his eyes, his cheeks hollowed out, the once-straight line of his back faintly stooped, a worn-down, hollowed-out air clinging to all of him.His gaze swept the room and snapped to a stop on me.In that instant something lit in his eyes, disbelieving, almost joyful, and he came at me half-shoving through the crowd and caught my wrist.“Sophia.” His voice was hoarse and urgent. “What are you doing here? I've been looking for you everywhere. Do you have any idea how worried I've been?”I looked down at the hand gri

(Third person’s POV)The words went into Caine's chest like a branding iron driven home. His throat flooded with copper, and he swallowed back the mouthful of blood that nearly came up.He swept a cold look over Celina.“Dray. Take men to River and raze it. The whole pack.” His voice was pure murder. “Leave no one alive.”Celina's pupils contracted.“Caine, wait—” She thrashed against the chains, the iron clanging. “I can help you get her back. I can—”“Too late.” He turned.“Please—” Her voice climbed to a shriek. “Caine, I'm begging you—”He didn't look back.He led the assault on River himself. The wound in his chest was still seeping, his left arm barely able to lift. But the instant he shifted, all of it drowned under something darker and more savage. The River warriors scrambled to meet him and were no match at all.Caine ran at the front, fangs tearing through every body that stood in his way, as if that were the only outlet the storm in his chest could find. The stench of blood

(Third person’s POV)In the moment the pain and the betrayal went off together, only one thought was left in Caine's head. What had it felt like for Sophia. When she was framed. When she was exiled. She'd still been wounded then.Had she felt this too—every breath coming with a tearing edge to it?He couldn't even imagine how deep that despair had run.Rage swallowed every shred of reason.A suffocating Alpha aura blew out of him, and the air across the whole hall warped under the pressure. The nearest River warriors were flung straight off their feet, smashing through the round tables behind them.“Kill them.”That was all he said. The Silver Moon warriors snapped to it, turning from caught-off-guard to counterattack in a heartbeat, steel flashing as the fight ripped the hall apart.Caine pulled the silver dagger from his chest. Blood gushed from the wound, but he couldn't feel the pain.Or rather—next to the deeper wound inside him, that pain didn't even register. He drove into the t

Not a word had come back.He sat in the dressing room and let the attendants fix his tie, his mind a blank. He thought of the line of her downturned face when she sorted files. The way she always tasted his drink first to check the temperature. The wound she'd taken shielding him from a rogue. He shut his eyes, and the dull ache rolled through his stomach again. The ceremony hall was packed. Delegates from all seventeen Eastern packs had come, the mood solemn and charged.Caine stood before the altar, his gaze unfocused.Celina came toward him in a gown of pure white, smiling bright, and slid her arm through his.The officiant began to read the vows.“Do you take...”A face flashed through Caine's mind. Not the carefully made-up face in front of him. Another one—streaked with blood, jaw clenched, a face that had never once cried out in pain in front of him.
