Chapter 1

When Tristan Lockhart walked out of the chapel, I was looking down, drying the rainwater from my hands.

He paused mid-step, looking caught off guard. "When did you get here?"

I lifted my head to meet his gaze. "Just arrived."

Sunny Pierce trailed right behind him, a natural, easy smile plastered across her face. "Hey, Grace. We were just messing around inside. You didn't happen to overhear us, did you?"

She intentionally stepped over to my right side—the exact spot where my hearing was at its worst.

Tristan furrowed his brow and shot her a warning glance. "Stop playing."

Sunny stuck her tongue out playfully. "Fine, I'll stop. It’s just that Grace has trouble with her ears, you know? I’ll make sure to always stand on her left from now on when I speak."

She framed it as an act of pure thoughtfulness.

Yet, the surrounding groomsmen and bridesmaids couldn't help but chuckle.

I kept my eyes on Tristan.

In the past, whenever anyone dared to make a joke about my hearing, his face would instantly turn ice-cold. He was always the first to defend me.

He used to tell me that being unable to hear wasn't my fault. He said the people who lacked basic manners were the ones who should feel utterly humiliated.

But now, he merely snatched the sheet of wedding vows out of Sunny's hand and extended it to me. "Don't overthink this. She just speaks before she thinks."

I took the paper from him.

The words written across it had been completely scribbled over and defaced.

Originally, I had written: Thank you for being my right ear for over a decade.

But Sunny had altered it to read: Thank you for tolerating me as your constant complication for over a decade.

My thumb pressed against that line, the paper absorbing a faint smudge of moisture from the rain.

Noticing it, Tristan reached out to pull the sheet back. "I'll have someone print out a fresh copy for you."

I took a deliberate step backward, out of his reach. "No need."

His hand froze mid-air. "Grace."

I could tell that his irritation was rising.

"Tristan, don't be so harsh on Grace," Sunny said, letting out a soft, delicate cough beside him. "I’m sure she just feels like I'm trying to steal her spotlight today."

Tristan rubbed the space between his eyebrows in sheer exhaustion.

"Am I wrong?" Sunny asked, turning her smiling gaze toward me. "After all, everyone has been crowding around me during today's rehearsal. It’s only natural for Grace to feel a little unhappy about it."

Someone standing nearby stepped in to diffuse the tension. "Alright, let's calm down. It’s just a little pre-wedding friction."

"Yeah, don't be upset, bride-to-be. Look at how incredibly well Tristan treats you."

As if triggered by that reminder, Tristan stepped closer and reached out to grasp my hand. "Let's go. I'll drive you back home. The weather is brutal out there."

The palm of his hand was still warm.

Yet, the words he had spoken inside suddenly echoed through my mind.

[The invitations have already been sent out. What else am I supposed to do at this point?]

It turned out he wasn't marrying me because he actually wanted to.

He was doing it simply because calling it off would create a massive, messy scene.

I smoothly pulled my hand out of his grip. "No need. I'll find my own way back."

Tristan watched his empty palm, his expression instantly darkening. "What is it again?"

Again.

The moment that word left his mouth, a sharp ringing sound filled my ears. Sunny stepped forward, her voice softening into a delicate purr.

"Grace, I swear I didn't mean any harm. How about I just apologize to you?"

As she spoke, she leaned down into a dramatic bow, prompting Tristan to instantly reach out and catch her. Sunny caught his arm perfectly, leaning her weight against him as she cast a subtle wink in my direction. "See? He still worries about me."

A heavy silence descended over the entrance of the rehearsal hall.

Tristan immediately let go of her, looking incredibly self-conscious. "Grace, she's just talking nonsense."

I nodded slowly.

He kept his eyes locked on me, clearly waiting for me to break down and cause a scene.

But I didn't say a word.

I simply folded the defaced vows neatly and slid them inside my purse. "I'm leaving now."

Tristan extended his arm, blocking my path. "The wedding is in three days. Are you seriously going to pick a fight with me over a tantrum right now?"

I looked down at the luxury watch resting on his wrist. It was the birthday gift I had bought him last year.

Engraved on the inner lining of the leather strap was a short sentence.

A lifetime promise.

Back then, he had laughed and claimed it was entirely too cheesy, yet he wore it every single day.

Now, that very hand was barred across my chest like a set of heavy iron shackles.

I whispered softly.

"Tristan, I am just a little tired."

His brow knitted even tighter together. "If you're tired, go home and get some sleep. Stop acting out and throwing a fit at a crucial time like this."

Sunny peeked out from right behind his shoulder. "Grace, the wedding itinerary is going to be incredibly hectic over the next few days. If you're feeling unwell, I can easily step onto the stage and handle the rehearsal for you. Honestly, I ran through those vows pretty smoothly just now anyway."

One year later, I transitioned to a brand new career.I took a position developing specialized curriculum plans for a hearing rehabilitation agency.Every single day, I interacted with countless children. Some were prone to tears, some were painfully timid, and some stubbornly hid their hearing aids deep inside their pockets, refusing to wear them altogether.Whenever that happened, I would kneel down to their level and speak to them, always making sure to stand squarely on the side where they could hear me with absolute clarity.I never rushed them, and I never lost my patience.Owen would occasionally tease me when he saw me working. "Honestly, you're looking far more like a certified rehabilitation specialist than I am these days."I laughed and fired a playful retort right back. "Well, then you'd better hand over your office chair."He chuckled, passing a thick document folder over to me. "You got it, Professor Thorne."His teasing brought a bright smile to my face. The d

Tristan didn't chase after me again that day.Over the following week, he sent me a text message every single day.Sometimes it was a simple good morning.Sometimes it was a photograph.A brand-new white umbrella.A meticulously remade white camellia corsage. He even managed to get the original sheet of wedding vows—the one Sunny had completely defaced and scribbled over—restored by a professional, sending me a picture of the finished result.[I managed to recover your original text,] his message read.I stared quietly at the photograph.Tristan, thank you for being my right ear for over a decade. Those words had once been entirely true. But they only belonged to the past now.I didn't send a reply.Over the weekend, I attended a charity outreach and support event for the hearing impaired.Owen had invited me to participate as a volunteer. He mentioned that a lot of young children who had just been fitted for their first hearing aids were incredibly terrified of being mo

The news of the wedding cancellation spread like wildfire anyway. Our mutual friend group chat stayed completely frantic the entire day. Some people kept asking if we had just gotten into a minor argument. Some kept urging me not to be impulsive.A few even sent me private messages.[Honestly, Sunny was definitely crossing some major lines during that period.]I looked down at the screen, offering no response.Later that evening, Tristan’s mother called my phone. "Grace, sweetie, I'm not here to pressure you. I just wanted to ask... is there genuinely any chance left for you and Tristan?"I tightened my grip around my water glass. "Mrs. Lockhart, I am so incredibly sorry."She let out a heavy sigh on the other end of the line. "You don't need to apologize to me, sweetie. Tristan... he’s just been completely spoiled rotten by you over the years."I blinked, caught slightly off guard. She continued softly, "He always operated under the assumption that the exact moment he turne

Owen naturally reached over and took my bag from my hands. "Is the static in your right ear still pretty noticeable today?"I lightly touched my ear. "It’s a little better than it was over the last two days."Tristan stood framed behind us, his voice instantly dropping to a freezing register. "Grace, who exactly is he?"I turned around. "My rehabilitation specialist."Owen gave him a brief nod. "Hello."Tristan didn't bother to return the greeting. Instead, his eyes locked onto Owen’s hand, which was holding my bag. "Does a rehabilitation specialist genuinely need to carry your purse for you?"Owen offered a polite smile. "Just helping out."Tristan shifted his glare directly onto me. "You're seriously just letting a strange man handle your personal belongings now?"A wave of absolute absurdity washed over me.Sunny could wear my dresses, pin my bridal corsage to her chest, and completely deface my wedding vows, and he would merely brand me as petty.Yet now, simply because O

On the third day after I moved back to my parents' house, Tristan called my phone for the first time.I didn't pick up.A moment later, a text message flashed across my screen.[The wedding logistics have been temporarily put on hold. When are you coming back? We need to talk.]I sent a brief reply.[There is nothing to talk about.]A few minutes passed before his next text arrived.[Grace, stop testing my patience.]Staring at those five words, a sharp, sudden laugh escaped my throat. My mother walked out of the kitchen holding a bowl of warm soup. Noticing the look on my face, she didn't pry or ask an endless stream of questions. She simply placed the bowl gently right in front of me."Drink some of this, sweetie. Have your ears been bothering you at all lately?"I shook my head. "I'm alright."In reality, I wasn't alright.Whenever my emotions fluctuated intensely, a persistent, violent ringing would echo deep inside my right ear.In the past, whenever Tristan noticed

The wedding planner fell dead silent on the other end of the line for a few long seconds. "Miss Thorne, are you absolutely certain about this?"I looked down at the trash bag, where a sliver of the white fabric canopy from the broken umbrella was peeking out. "I'm certain."After cancelling the wedding, I didn't cry.I simply began opening the cardboard boxes stacked across the living room floor, one by one.I processed the return requests for the wedding favors.I tore up the table placement cards.I tucked the guest sign-in registry away into the very bottom drawer of the cabinet. When it came to that memory album, my initial instinct was to throw it straight into the garbage. But as my fingers flipped to the very last page, my hand froze. That photograph had been taken on the night of our engagement party.Tristan was standing squarely on my right side, his head lowered as he gently tucked a stray lock of hair behind my ear, adjusting my hearing aid.In that picture, the
