The name Lyra hung in the air like a poisonous fog. Aria watched Kael. He looked as if he had been struck by lightning. The Alpha who had just been commanding the room with a terrifying ego was gone, replaced by a man who looked like he had seen his own execution.

“Kael?” Aria’s voice was sharp, cutting through the heavy silence of the foyer.

He didn't answer. He didn't even seem to hear her. He was staring at the messenger, his chest heaving under his expensive suit jacket. His scent had changed. The cedar and rain were gone, replaced by the bitter, metallic tang of pure, unadulterated fear.

“Elias, take the boy,” Kael whispered.

“No,” Aria said, pulling Cassian closer. “He stays with me.”

“Take him!” Kael roared, his voice cracking with an intensity that made the stone walls vibrate.

Cassian whimpered, burying his face in Aria’s neck. Elias stepped forward, his face full of pity but his movements firm. He gently reached for the boy.

“Aria, let him go,” Elias said softly. “The Alpha suite is secure. He’ll be safe there with the guards. Kael needs to handle this, and you need to be by his side. That’s the contract.”

Aria looked at Kael’s trembling hands. She looked at her terrified son. She realized she had no choice. She kissed Cassian’s forehead and handed him to Elias. The boy didn't scream, but the way he reached out for her as Elias carried him up the stairs tore a hole in her heart.

As soon as they were out of sight, Kael grabbed the messenger by the collar and hauled him toward the war room at the back of the house. Aria followed, her heels clicking rapidly against the cold marble.

The war room was filled with screens and maps. A group of tech-wolves were huddled around a monitor, their faces illuminated by the blue glow of a pulsing waveform.

“Show me,” Kael commanded.

One of the wolves pointed to a jagged line on the screen. “It’s a resonance frequency, Alpha. Low-wave. It’s encrypted with a signature that matches the personal tracker Lyra wore. But that’s impossible. That tracker was destroyed in a fire five years ago.”

“Where is it coming from?” Kael asked, his voice dead.

“The weeping caves. Right on the edge of the northern cliffs.”

Kael turned to the wall and smashed his fist into a map of the territory. The wood splintered. “She’s dead. I felt her die. I felt the bond snap!”

Aria watched him. She felt a cold, hollow sensation in her stomach. “Kael, you told me she was your fated mate. If she’s alive, what does that mean for the bond I feel?”

Kael turned to her. His eyes were bloodshot. “I don't know. I don't know anything anymore.”

“We’re moving out,” Kael barked at the room. “Full tactical. No one speaks of this to the pack. If word gets out that she might be alive, the unrest will kill us before the night is over.”

They moved fast. Within minutes, Aria found herself in the back of an armored transport, flanked by Kael and four silent Enforcers. The forest blurred past the windows, a dark wall of pine and shadow. Kael stared straight ahead, his jaw locked. He didn't look at her once. He was already gone, lost in the memory of a woman he had loved more than life itself.

The transport stopped at the base of the cliffs. The air here was damp and smelled of salt from the distant sea. Kael led the way, his movements predatory and frantic. They climbed the narrow path toward the caves, the only sound the wind whistling through the rocks.

They reached the mouth of the weeping cave. Inside, a small, silver device sat on a flat stone. It was pulsing with a soft, blue light.

“It’s a lure,” Aria whispered, her survival instincts screaming. “Kael, don't.”

But Kael was already moving toward it. He reached out, his hand shaking, and picked up the device.

As soon as his skin touched the metal, a holographic projection shimmered into existence in the center of the cave. It was a woman. She was tall, blonde, and possessed a haunting beauty that made Aria feel like a shadow.

“Kael,” the projection said. The voice was melodic, sweet, and filled with a longing that felt too real. “I knew you would come for me. I’m waiting, my love. Follow the frequency.”

The projection flickered and died.

Kael let out a choked sound, something between a sob and a growl. He turned to his men. “Fan out! Search every inch of these caves! She’s here!”

“Kael, wait!” Aria grabbed his arm. “This feels like a trap. Look at the magic in the air. This isn't wolf power. This is something else.”

Kael shoved her hand off his arm. The force of it made her stumble. “You don't understand. If there is even a chance she survived, I have to find her. Stay here with the guards.”

He disappeared into the darkness of the tunnels, his men following close behind.

Aria stood at the mouth of the cave, the wind whipping her hair across her face. She felt a sudden, sharp pain in her chest, not from the bond, but from the realization that she truly was just a substitute. He didn't even care if she was safe. He only cared about the ghost.

“Luna?” one of the guards asked. “We should move back to the transport.”

“In a minute,” Aria said.

She walked deeper into the cave, away from the guards. Something was calling to her. Not a voice, but a vibration. She looked at the stone where the device had been. There was a small, hidden compartment carved into the rock.

She reached inside and pulled out a tattered piece of parchment. It was old, stained with what looked like dried blood.

She unfolded it. It wasn't a map. It was a ledger.

Aria’s eyes scanned the names. Her breath hitched. There, at the bottom of the list, was her own name. And next to it, the date of the night at the inn.

But it was the entry above hers that stopped her heart.

*Subject: Lyra. Status: False Bond Successful. Duration: 7 years. Goal: Control of Midnight Pack Alpha.*

Aria’s hands began to shake. She realized the truth in a heartbeat. Kael had never been Lyra’s mate. The bond he had mourned for five years had been a lie, a magical construct designed to enslave him.

And she was the only real thing he had ever had.

“Aria.”

The voice didn't come from the tunnels. It came from behind her, near the cliff edge.

Aria spun around. Standing there, silhouetted by the moon, was a woman. She was wearing a tattered white dress, her hair flowing in the wind. She looked exactly like the projection, but her eyes were not sweet. They were black, empty pits of malice.

“You have something that belongs to me,” Lyra said.

Aria backed away, her heart pounding. “You were never his mate. You used magic.”

Lyra smiled, a cold, sharp expression. “Magic is much more reliable than fate, don't you think? It lasted seven years. And now, I’ve come back to claim my throne. But first, I have to get rid of the clutter.”

Lyra stepped forward, and the ground beneath Aria’s feet began to crumble.

“Kael!” Aria screamed, but her voice was swallowed by the wind.

Lyra raised a hand, and a wave of dark energy slammed into Aria’s chest. Aria flew backward, over the edge of the cliff.

As she fell into the darkness, the last thing she saw was Lyra looking down at her, and the last thing she felt was the bond with Kael snapping, not because of rejection, but because the man she loved was currently walking into a room where his son sat alone, and Lyra was already there, holding a knife to Cassian’s throat.

"Or what, Kael?" Aria’s voice was a jagged blade. "You’ll take him? You’ll drag a five-year-old away from the only person he’s ever known because your rituals are failing?"Kael didn't flinch. He stood like a statue, his silhouette blocking the only exit. "I will do what is necessary for my bloodline. You know the laws of the Great Packs. An Alpha heir cannot be raised as a rogue. It is dangerous for him, and it is an insult to the ancestors.""You lost the right to talk about insults the moment you threw me out of that inn," Aria stepped forward, her heart hammering against her ribs. She could feel Cassian’s small hands tightening their grip on her shirt. "He is not an heir. He is a boy. My boy."Kael’s eyes shifted to Cassian. The boy was staring back, his small chest heaving. The blue sparks at the child's fingertips had faded, but the air around him still hummed with static."Look at him, Aria," Kael said, his voice dropping to a low, rough vibration. "He is drowning in power he d

Aria didn’t wait for him to finish the sentence. She grabbed the heavy rolling pin from the flour-dusted counter and swung with every ounce of terror-fueled strength she had. It connected with the side of the hunter’s head with a sickening thud. The radio dropped from his hand, clattering onto the floor, and he stumbled back into a rack of cooling bread."Alpha, I" the radio hissed, a distorted voice crackling through the small speaker.Aria didn't listen to the voice. She lunged over the counter and stomped on the radio, crushing the plastic under her boot until the signal died. The hunter was groaning, clutching his head, blood Beginning to leak between his fingers. He was a beta, strong and fast, but he hadn't expected a pregnant woman to fight like a cornered animal."Don't come closer," Aria breathed. She wasn't holding the rolling pin anymore. She had the silver knife. The blade gleamed under the flickering shop lights. The hunter looked up, his eyes unfocused. "You can't hide h

The mud soaked through her boots with every step she took away from the inn. Aria did not look back. She could feel his gaze burning into her spine from the upstairs window, but she refused to give him the satisfaction of seeing her stumble. Her heart was a jagged stone in her chest. The bond was screaming. It felt like a physical tether was hooked under her ribs, pulling her back toward the room she had just left. It begged her to turn around. It told her that if she just explained it better, he would understand. The bond was a liar. She reached the edge of the forest where the road split. To the left was the Midnight Pack territory. To the right was the neutral wasteland. She turned right. The morning air was biting, a sharp contrast to the heat of the bed she had shared with Kael. She wrapped her thin cloak tighter around her shoulders. Her skin still smelled like him. It was a cruel reminder. Every time she breathed in, she was reminded of the way he had whispered to her in the da

The rain did not just fall. It screamed. It lashed against the windows of the Blackwood Inn like it wanted to break the glass and drown everyone inside. Lightning cracked the sky open. For a second, the world outside was bright white. Then it fell back into a thick, suffocating black.Aria sat in the corner of the common room. She held a mug of tea that had gone cold an hour ago. She did not mind the cold. She liked the way the porcelain felt against her palms. It was solid. It was real. Everything else in her life felt like it was slipping through her fingers. She was twenty-two. She was alone. She was a rogue without a pack, traveling through the neutral zone to find a place where no one knew her name. The border of the Midnight Pack was only a few miles away. She just had to survive the night. The heavy oak door of the inn slammed open. The wind rushed in, snuffing out half the candles on the tables. Aria looked up. A man stood in the doorway. He was drenched. Water rolled off his
