Chapter 4

Author: In My Skinny Era
Noah neither talked to me nor entered my office for the rest of the day.

It was not until I finished delivering the documents and passed by the elevator lobby that I saw Jessie carrying her bag and leaving with Noah.

"I’m about to start an almost 24-hour campaign. Noah, you should reward me."

She froze for a moment when she saw me, but she quickly returned to her usual demeanor. "Lola, let's go to the Arctic to see whales after we're done with this campaign."

Noah walked over and pinned my loose hair behind my ear. "Lola, go home after you're done. Since the wedding photos haven't been taken, let's postpone the wedding. We can plan it properly again when we get back from our vacation."

Then, the elevator door opened with a ding.

Jessie glanced at the still available elevator. "We gotta go."

They did not need my reply. In their eyes, I could cry, make a scene, and give them the cold shoulder, but I would eventually forget everything.

This time, I was leaving for real.

Back in the office, I handed over the documents to my team members.

The schedule, advertising budget, supplier contact information... It was so detailed that whoever took over could not make a mistake.

When I reached the company exit, Noah suddenly texted me.

Noah: [Lola, today marks our 20th anniversary of knowing each other.]

Noah: [I want to clarify the recent misunderstandings.]

Noah: [I've reserved a table at that restaurant you've always wanted to go to. It's just the two of us. I'll see you there.]

He remembered our 20th anniversary.

I put the phone back in my bag and grazed against something cool.

It was the emerald bracelet Noah's mother gave me as a family heirloom. I took it off and forgot to return it to him as I got caught up with work.

I would go see him. After all, I should hand such a valuable item back to him in person.

Arriving at the agreed-upon hotel, a waiter took my suitcase at the entrance, and I headed toward the restaurant on the upper floor with a panoramic view of the city.

Just as I pushed open the door, a shower of confetti rained down with a bang.

The balloon wall prominently displayed: [Wishing you a phenomenal campaign! Long live our 20-year friendship!]

Jessie wore a mermaid gown as she stood on stage. "Mr. Lucas, Ms. Carson, and I grew up together. Without them, I would not be here today."

A ringing sensation shot through my ears as my body instinctively recoiled, only to be pressed down by a pair of large hands. "Surprised? After Jessie finishes speaking, I'll announce to the entire company that you're my fiancée. That way, no one will gossip behind our backs anymore."

I stared at him in disbelief. "You said it was our 20th anniversary and that it would be just the two of us."

He lowered his head and gently kissed the top of my head. "Jessie texted you with my phone. Didn't she make it clear? It's a 20th anniversary celebration—our 20th anniversary as a trio."

I suddenly felt like a joke standing there.

After Jessie finished speaking, she called Noah onto the stage.

He strode toward her.

Jason, standing nearby, immediately came over. He looked aggrieved. "Lola, we didn't mean to hide this from you. We thought it was just a kickoff party for Jessie. Everyone thought you were leaving and didn't want to upset you, so we didn't say anything."

Watching Noah's back, I decided I was done waiting for him to look back. I handed Jason the velvet bag containing the emerald bracelet. "Give this to Mr. Lucas later."

I hurried outside.

Before the elevator doors closed, I heard Noah's hearty laugh. "Next, please welcome my fiancée, Lola Carson."

Applause erupted, but the spotlight could not find the person it was supposed to be focusing on.

Noah's smile slowly froze.

The next second, his phone suddenly started vibrating incessantly.

I handed Jessie a piece of tissue and said no more.Jessie held the tissue in her hand and remained silent for a long time before getting up and walking toward the door. When she pushed the door open, she stopped again. "I can tell that the carpenter likes you. His sister is also better than me."I replied indifferently, "Maybe."That was the last conversation I had with her.Half a year later, my bank card received a considerable transfer. It was from Noah.I did not return it because I had contributed so much to our relationship and company. I knew I deserved it.On the same day, Noah's apology letter also appeared in my email inbox.I had blocked almost all of his social media accounts, but I had overlooked this one thing. However, it was not too late to block him there too.A few days later, I was feeding the cats in front of Landrossienna Guesthouse when I suddenly heard a familiar voice. "You're allergic to cat fur. The next day, I told Ross the whole story. "This new account has little fan appeal and is unable to compete with professional companies. Last night, the three interested potential advertising partners withdrew their offers. I'm sorry. I didn't expect my personal affairs to affect you."He poured the coffee from the pot into the cups, his tone as casual as if talking about the weather. "Then don't cooperate with them.""Are you not bothered by it?"We had just had a celebration dinner last night."My work speaks for itself. People who know quality won't write it off because of a few comments."A cup of coffee was placed in front of me."It's not worth it to be upset about it."I did not understand. How could an ordinary person act so calm when they had just gotten their chance to shoot to fame ripped away? The next day, I found out the answer.Ross' account got officially verified, and he was labeled as the founder of Precito. His videos were granted original content protection

I let out a heavy sigh. "I'm working. Why are you here?""Noah, don't be impulsive. Let's talk it out." Jessie grabbed Noah's hand again, but he immediately shook it off.Ross put his carving knife back into his belt and stood up to ask me, "Who are they?""My ex and ex-colleague," I retorted coldly. The expressions on Noah's and Jessie's faces remained blank for a few seconds. Then, Noah stepped forward and tried to grab me.I stepped back while Ross stood in front of me. "Visiting my workshop requires an appointment. Please go out if you don't have one."Noah looked up at Ross, who was half a head taller than him, and still rolled up his sleeves. "You really think you're all that?"Jessie stomped her feet in frustration. "Lola, say something."I did not want them to make a scene here, so I left first. "Come on. Let's go somewhere else to talk."We walked into a nearby coffee shop and found a four-person booth. Noah and I sat on the outside, while Jessie gave a shy smile and

Before I could finish watching the romance movie, the flight to Floraville had already landed.I turned off flight mode, and my phone started buzzing with notifications. All were messages from Noah and Jessie.I thought for a moment and blocked them both. After getting my luggage, I took a taxi to the guesthouse I had booked. However, there was a section that did not allow cars to pass, so I had to walk.A steady drizzle started to fall.I looked around and realized that this small town was not as lively as Deegonia.Even though it was just 11 PM, there was not a single supermarket open to buy an umbrella at.As I was hesitating, a black umbrella covered my head. "Are you heading to Landrossienna Guesthouse?"I looked up and saw a handsome face, so pale it was almost translucent in the cold-toned streetlight. The tree shadows swayed around me, and there was only a faint light from a shop a hundred feet away.I quickly stepped back a few steps. "A ghosthouse?"The man paused

Lola: [The emerald bracelet is with Jason. Help me return it to your mother.] Up on stage, Noah stared intently at his phone, repeatedly confirming the meaning of those words. The commotion from the audience was growing louder and louder.Jason reluctantly walked over to the stage and said cautiously, "Mr. Lucas, Lola asked me to give you this. She seems to have left."Noah abruptly looked up and recognized the fabric bag he was holding. It was the one his mother took out from the safe when he took me back to his family's house a few months ago. His mother had beamed so much as she slipped the emerald bracelet onto Lola's wrist. "This is an antique passed down from our ancestors. It's given to the daughter if there is one, or to the daughter-in-law if there isn't. You two are childhood sweethearts who are getting married, which is rare and should be cherished. "Later, he accompanied Lola to her parents' grave. In front of her parents, he swore to take care of her for the rest
