SETH’S POV

*Flashback

“Papa, please don’t lock me up here!” Little me cried. “I want to go outside like Elias.”

“You can’t. Stop being a cry baby.” He said, rolling his eyes.

“Why?”

“Because you’re a curse to this kingdom. Nobody should ever find out about you.”

I looked at him with tears in my eyes,I didn’t ask to be born like this.

“Please don’t leave me here.” I sobbed.

“You are a king. Kings don't cry.” He said as he turned to leave.

“Please Papa. It’s too dark here! Please, I can't stay here!” I begged as he left.

“Breathe, you’re not a curse. You’re a king and kings don’t cry.” I whispered to myself as I sat by the corner of that cold room shaking.

*End flashback

“Please don’t leave!” I screamed as I opened my eyes.

“Your Highness, I’m here.” Cassian said, rushing to my side.

Another nightmare.

“Cassian, what are you doing here?” I said, when I finally came around.

“I heard you scream.”

I looked away immediately. I hated when he saw me like this.

Weak.

Broken.

The same helpless child he was sent to protect fifteen years ago.

It’s been two days since Vaelor took over Velmora. Since he had killed two ministers just because they argued with him.

“And did you bring what I asked for?”

He nodded his head to say yes as he placed the little bottle into my hands.

No second thoughts. No going back.

The plan was going to work whether the heavens liked it or not.

I got dressed and left.

“Is everything ready?” Elias whispered to me.

“Yes.”

Vaelor sat at the other end of the table. He was watching me properly.

“You,”He met my eyes. “Taste it.”

“He’s my aide! He’s not yours to command.” Elias said, shouting.

His eyes weren’t joking, “Don’t make me repeat myself.”

He sat back in his chair, watching me taste every food in front of him.

“Is this enough or should I finish the food?” I glanced up, his eyes met mine.

Again.

He only chuckled.

Everything was going too smoothly, it was a bit scary.

Elias stayed silent across the table. Tensed. Waiting.

I returned to his side as I watched Vaelor eat slowly.

The poison should be kicking in soon.

Just a little longer. He reached for his wine but nothing happened.

I met his gaze.

He was…

Smiling.

A cold feeling crawled into my chest.

My vision suddenly got blurry and I could feel my knees weaken.

Cassian noticed my expression change immediately.

“Your Highness, are you okay?” He whispered.

Then it hit.

My fingers trembled.

The room was moving in circles.

For a second, it felt like someone had pushed me from behind.

I grabbed the edge of the table but my fingers slipped.

“Are you okay?”

I tried to make out the voice asking but voices kept ringing in my head.

No.

No, no, it can’t be.

I was careful.

Heat spread violently across my chest as pain made my stomach tighten.

The wrong side.

I swallowed from the wrong side.

I could see him smirking.

My knees gave out.

“Seth?”

The last thing I could hear was Elias' voice before I lost consciousness.

A strange room.

That was what I woke up to. I scanned the room even if my vision was still partially blurry.

“Welcome back.” A familiar voice echoed through the room.

That calm, cool voice that somehow managed to bring me back to reality fully.

“You tried to kill me,” he continued. “And as you can see, I’m alive.”

“Where am I?” I asked.

“Kaelor.” He paused before he continued. “We’ve been here for two days.”

“ I was out for two days?!”

“The fact you’re still alive makes me question the fact that you’re just an aide to Elias.”

That almost made me laugh. I didn’t know if that was a compliment or if he suspected something.

“I didn’t try to kill you.”

“Because you couldn’t. No matter what you do, I will always be a step ahead.”

I glared weakly. “Go to hell.”

“And I will make sure you wish you died instead because now my eyes will always be on you.”

“Nonsense! Don’t be ridiculous.”

“Isn’t that what you wanted? My attention?”

I didn’t know if I should say thank you because I actually wanted his attention.

“I didn’t poison you!” I snapped.

He only stared at me.

That calm expression on his face only irritated me more than anger would have.

“Really?” He asked. “Then did your King push you to do it?”

I stayed silent. The room felt too heavy.

“It’s such a pity you didn’t die because when I’m done with you, you’d wish you die.”

My stomach tightened.

“The fact I’m still alive shows that the heavens hate you too.”

He chuckled.

“Well we’ll see.”

He turned to leave but I stopped him. “Why are you doing this? I doubt you’re doing this for fun.”

He studied me for a moment.

“Go on then. Tell me why you think I’m doing this.”

For some reason, what I said only amused him more.

I hated it.

I hated the way he looked at me like I was something entertaining instead of dangerous.

I hated the way he looked at me like a child looked at his new toy.

I looked away first, not because I was afraid but because I needed to think.

But—

His fingers grabbed my chin.

I froze.

“You messed up when you tried to kill me. Now you’re mine. You can’t even breathe without my permission.”

“I’m not your —property—!” I sputtered.

I slapped away his hand immediately.

For the first time since the first day I met him, his expression changed slightly.

Interest.

Real interest.

Not amusement.

Not mockery.

“Seth!” Cassian walked in interrupting the silence.

We both turned. Vaelor finally stepped away from the bed.

“You should rest.” His lip curved slightly in a way that made him look attractive at that moment.

Then he left.

The moment he left, I exhaled shakily.

“He suspects something.” I glanced up at Cassian.

“Something happened while you were unconscious, your highness.”

“What?” I asked.

He clenched his fists. “A prophecy from the heavens.”

I swallowed. “About?”

“It was about you, your highness.”

SETH POVThe ride back to the palace was unbearable. Not because of the silence. Not because Cassian kept glancing at me every few seconds like he was trying to decide whether speaking would get him killed.No. It was because of those stupid words.“That doesn’t mean I enjoy the thought of you getting hurt.”What did he mean by that? Why did he care? What kind of psychopath says things like that after conquering the four kingdoms.I hated him. I had every reason to hate him. So why was his voice still stuck in my head?“Your Highness?” I heard Cassian call.“What?”“You’ve been glaring at the same flower vase for long.” I blinked.Sure enough, we had already entered my chambers and I was threatening the innocent vase with my eyes.“I’m thinking.”“Should I be worried?”“No.”“Alright then.” He paused. “Though if you are thinking of using Ryn, you should be careful. If Vaelor picked him then he is no ordinary person.”I glared. He was right.“I am no ordinary person either.”“Just

SETH’S POVRyn was interesting. Too interesting. He had a secret and Vaelor knew it. That was how he was able to hold him down.A dangerous secret.Which meant I needed to know everything about him.The crowd finally dispersed after the child was taken away. Women thanked him, old men praised him. Disgusting.“People really love heroes, don’t they?” I muttered.Cassian glanced at me. “I don’t think approaching him would be a wise thing to do. Vaelor kept him for a reason.”“Exactly. That is why I have to make a move.” I replied. “Keep an eye on him.”“We have to go back.” “Not yet.” I saw Ryn slip through the crowd exhausted. Before he could disappear into another street, I called out.“The People’s hero.”He stopped.“You again.” “Disappointed?”“No. Just surprised.”I folded my arms. “We weren’t done talking.”“What do you want to talk about? Probably why Vaelor is keeping me around?”I understood why Vaelor kept him around. Not only was he strong but smart too. “You are sharpe

Seth’s POV “Don’t, don’t run, you RASCAL!”I heard Queen Mother Sareaphine shout from my chambers. At least she isn’t in the worst place right now. She had few children from the Vaelor’s concubines to keep her company. She seemed to be adapting to the changes well but I knew she had something up her sleeves. She always does. She wouldn’t sit like this while the kingdom she’s worked so hard for trembles at the sight of one man.If even Elias knows then Vaelor probably knows too. He must be keeping a close eye on her.Vaelor.The thought of him reminded me of our encounter the day before and embarrassment kicked in.“Get a grip!” I pinched myself so hard my skin turned red.I tried to move and I was HARD.Hard? Just because I thought of him? “I can’t be tainted by that man’s barbaric behaviors right?” I asked myself as I looked down.A knock.I jumped.“W-who’s that?” I asked, covering myself with the sheets.“It’s me, Your high- Seth.”Since I noticed Vaelor’s people were always kee

Seth’s POVThe moment we left the meeting room, Elias exploded.“That man is insane.”I ignored him. My mind was everywhere. Everything was happening too fast and it was not a good sign. The letter. The seal. The Silver Dragon.Someone knew. Someone had known long before the prophecy descended from the heavens.Someone had been watching me for years. The same person who sent that maid.My stomach tightened.“Elias.”“What?”“Think.”He looked at me confused. “About what?”“The Elder.” I stopped walking. “I think it’s Valen.”“You don’t know that.” He replied.“I do. This is too much of a coincidence.”Silence followed. Even Elias looked unsettled for once.“Do you really think it’s him?” He asked.I don’t know.”That was a lie.I was certain. Ever since arriving in Kaelor, Valen had shown too much interest in me. The threat. The smiles. The old fox knew something. The question was how much. “I will have him executed.” I stared at Elias then laughed. “What?” He rolled his eyes.“

Seth’s POV“I don’t have to answer everytime your king calls for me.”The room fell silent. The atmosphere shifted. Heavy. Dangerous.“Elias, just go.” I sighed. His head snapped towards me. “What?” “I’m sorry, Your highness but if His Majesty wanted you dead, you’d already be dead.” “I know. I just hate the idea of him bossing me around.”“I know.” He cursed under his breath before standing. Fren stepped aside immediately. “His majesty requested the aide as well.”Of course he did.“Wonderful,” I muttered. The meeting wasn’t held in the throne room or the the council chambers, which made me suspicious. Fren led us through a section of the palace I hadn’t seen before.Dark corridors. Stone walls. No servant. Seth’s POVEvery time I closed my eyes, I remembered his hands. which was infuriating because I wasn’t sure it happened. The worst part wasn’t that I remembered, it was that I wasn’t sure I hated it.“I must be going crazy. It must be the Aphrodisiac.” I said quietly.“You must like the red roses?” I lifted my head. A man I’ve never seen in the palace stood in front of me. “What?” I asked, confused.“The roses. You must like them.”I looked at the roses, I must have been staring at them for a long time.“No. I hate roses. I prefer lilies.”He burst into laughter. “You were lost in thought then. My apologies.”I didn’t respond, I just stared as the sun hit his brown skin. He looked delicate but he wasn’t. “Who are you?” I finally asked.“Excuse my manners. I’m—”“I help you last night and you didn't even come to thank me.” Vaelor interrupted. “I see you’ve met my Veyra warrior, Ryn.”Veyra? I thought he wiped the whole of Veyra?
