I sat at the island and waited.

I didn't pace. Didn't rehearse what I was going to say. I just made two coffees and put his on his side of the counter and sat on my stool and waited for the elevator to open.

It opened at seven forty.

He came in, saw me, saw the coffees, and stopped for half a second. That half second told me everything. He knew this was coming. He had been expecting it since he left this morning.

He took off his jacket. He sat down across from me. He picked up the coffee.

  • The Wrong Match That Got It Right    His Version

I sat at the island and waited.I didn't pace. Didn't rehearse what I was going to say. I just made two coffees and put his on his side of the counter and sat on my stool and waited for the elevator to open.It opened at seven forty. He came in, saw me, saw the coffees, and stopped for half a second. That half second told me everything. He knew this was coming. He had been expecting it since he left this morning. He took off his jacket. He sat down across from me. He picked up the coffee.I said: tell me about your father. He looked at me over the cup.I said: not the clause. Not the estate. Him. Tell me what kind of man writes something like that into his will and calls it love.He put the cup down.He said: brilliant. He said it first, before anything else, and I thought that was important, that brilliant came before anything else. He said: the kind of brilliant that makes every room feel slightly smaller. He said: he built Ashford Holdings from one property deal when he was twenty

  • The Wrong Match That Got It Right    Sixty Million Reasons

The elevator opened and he was already in the kitchen.Jacket off. Coffee on the counter. And the look on his face that I was starting to recognise, the one that meant he already knew something and was waiting for me to catch up.I said: I went to meet someone today. He said: I know.I stopped. He said: Felix.I said: Felix followed me.He said: Felix has been following you since the photo last night. He said it the way he said everything. Just a fact. No apology wrapped around it, no performance of one either.I should have been annoyed.I was a little annoyed.I was also thinking about the unknown number and the private investigators and the car outside Derek's building and honestly Felix following me quietly was the least frightening thing on that list so I let it go.I put my bag down. I sat at the island.I said: her name is Helena Marsh. He said: I know that too.I looked at him.He said: Felix identified her when she walked into the coffee shop. He said: I've been on the phone

  • The Wrong Match That Got It Right    What She doesn't know

The message sat on my screen all night. Meet me tomorrow. Alone. I'll tell you everything about the man you just married. I didn't show Caden. I know how that sounds. I know the reasonable thing was to turn the phone around and put it on the counter between us the way I had done with everything else. But there was something about the word everything that made me stop. Everything about the man you just married. That was not a threat. That was an offer. And if I showed Caden he would shut it down before I found out what the offer actually was. So I put my phone in my pocket. I said goodnight. I went to my room. I lay on my bed and stared at the ceiling and typed back: where. The reply came in four minutes. A coffee shop address on the west side. Tomorrow at noon. I said: how will I know you. They said: I'll find you. I put the phone face down on the nightstand and closed my eyes and told myself I was going to sleep. I did not sleep. --- The coffee shop was the kind of plac

  • The Wrong Match That Got It Right    Someone Is Watching

I looked at the photo on his screen for a long time.It was not a long lens shot. Not the kind paparazzi take from across the street with equipment that makes everything look slightly soft at the edges. This was close. Clear. Taken from maybe ten feet away by someone standing on the pavement who knew exactly where to be and exactly when to be there.I said: they were right next to the cab.He said: yes.I said: I didn't see anyone. He said: you weren't looking. He was right. I had been looking at the seventh floor. I had been doing the thing I told myself not to do and while I was doing it someone was standing ten feet away with their phone pointed at me.I put my bag down. I took off my coat. I sat at the island. He put his phone on the counter face up between us. I looked at the photo again. Something was bothering me about it and I was trying to find what it was. I looked at the background. Derek's building on the right. The pavement. The cab. My face in the window. And on the left

  • The Wrong Match That Got It Right    The Unknown Number

I found the text again at 6am.I had not stopped thinking about it since last night. I know what you did this morning. We need to talk. I had read it maybe thirty times before I fell asleep and now I was reading it again in the kitchen with my coffee and the city still dark outside the windows and absolutely no idea who sent it.I went through the options.Derek. Possible. He had been calling from different numbers all day. But Derek's version of a message was longer. More words. More justification. He could not say something in six words if there were twenty available.Vivienne. Also possible. She was precise enough. She was also the kind of person who would know about the courthouse before it was public and would have something to say about it.Someone else entirely. Someone from Caden's world I didn't know about yet. Which was a list I could not even begin to make because I had known this man for forty eight hours.I typed back: who is this.I sent it.I watched the screen.Nothing

  • The Wrong Match That Got It Right    MARRIED ALREADY

Derek found out at 6pm.Marcus from the fourth floor. Jacket already on, bag over his shoulder, phone held out like he was doing Derek a favour. He said: "Hey, saw something online. Is it true? Sloane got married today?"Derek looked up from his screen."To Caden Ashford?"The name landed like something thrown hard across the room.Derek took the phone. Looked at the photo. Grainy, taken from a distance outside a courthouse. Sloane in a dark coat. A tall man beside her, face half turned, but the height and the build and the way he stood told Derek everything he needed to know.He handed the phone back.He said: "Get out of my office Marcus."Marcus got out.Derek sat there. Hands flat on the desk. Eyes on his screen but not seeing it. The photo was still in his head, burning itself into the back of his eyes the way images do when your brain decides this is important, this is something you are going to keep whether you want to or not.She got married. She actually got married. Not just
