CHAPTER 4: SELECTING A LUNA

Enzo POV

It's been one week since Anthony came here and told me that the elders are deciding my future. Bastards. I have been reviewing information on the she-wolves in the pack.

None of them has the ability to be my Luna. I was considering picking an unattractive woman, so I wouldn't be tempted to catch feelings for her, but then I would have to be seen with her at special events and I don't feel like being ridiculed later on for being a powerful Alpha with an ugly Luna.

With unattractiveness out of the question, I went for a plain one. Neither attractive nor unattractive. Someone who could clean up well enough to be presentable for special events but unattractive enough not tempt me. I had the omegas set up a room at the other end of the Alpha floor so the chosen Luna wouldn't be near me.

A weak connection is best.

The problem is, I don't like any of the candidates. None of them inspires even the slightest trust. Trust that they can do the job, hold themselves to the standards of a Luna, and trust that they will not expect more than being a Luna in title only. I am doing this out of necessity. I'm quite literally being forced into being mated.

"Alpha?" Max knocks before he enters my office.

"Yes, Max?"

"Still looking for a mail-order Luna?" He says.

I cut him a look that clearly says, 'don't start.'

"None of these women will do, Crane and the elders really screwed me here."

"You know Alpha, not all women are the same. Perhaps, you should think about trying to make something work. It's been five years after all." Max suggests.

"Max, not even Rex wants a mate. Do you understand? We do not trust women.

This is a disaster waiting to happen. Not only will this be bad for me, but it's also bad for whoever signs up for this shit detail." I sigh.

"Well, perhaps you can find someone who isn't interested in being in a relationship with you but is only looking to gain some kind of status." He says trying to come up with a solution.

"Yeah, but that isn't exactly a question on the application, is it?" I say.

"No, but perhaps if you take the time to meet some of them, you could have these discussions. Just pick the top three and start with them." He says trying to help me make sense of this insanity.

"Fine, I'll go through everyone again and see which ones I think would be suitable.

Let's make a decision next week. Then I can meet with them and make a decision.

I am going to drag this out to the last minute and keep my freedom for as long as possible." I said.

I see he is distracted so I know he is being mind linked.

"Crest moon scout. I know you said that you wanted them killed on the spot, but before we do, we should question the first one to see what exactly Alpha Dexter is looking for from us." Max says. His logic sounds good so I  agree with him.

"Have him taken to the cells and we will go down and start questioning him," I said. I'm glad to get a break from looking at women's pictures and applications.

We make our way to the cells. I see a young kid. Not more than nineteen. How is he a scout? Most scouts are trained for years before they get that kind of position. This doesn't seem right?

"How old are you?" I ask, He is shaking. Shit.

"I am eighteen."

"Nineteen next week, Alpha."

"How are you a scout? Most scouts are in their mid-twenties and train for years." I

tell him.

His eyes widen, "Alpha Dexter said he wanted to test my scouting abilities and see if I would be ready for scout training and beready to serve the pack."

What the actual fuck? Test him in a role he hasn't trained for and you are testing him on the most powerful pack in the North, knowing I would kill him. This alpha is a bigger dick than I originally thought.

"Well, you failed." I started, "Why did he want you scouting here? What is he looking to find out?"

"Alpha, I didn't want to be a scout. I don't even want to be part of the crest moon.

I was brought in against my will. I will tell you what I know, but in exchange, will you please help me get back to my family?" The scout says.

His pleading surprises me. What surprises me even more is that he is asking for help. "What do you mean you were brought to the crest moon Flame against your will?"

"My pack was small. Alpha Dexter has been going to small packs and taking the young men and women. He forces us to come to his pack and accept him as our Alpha. This usually happens during our full moon runs. He grabs whoever he can.

We never see the women again, but the men are forced to join his pack and become front-line warriors. I'm trying to survive, but I didn't ask for this, nor do I want it." He says, with his lips trembling and tears glazing over his eyes.

FUCK. ME. He is kidnapping young men and women. What is happening to the women? Where are they going?

"Why did he send you to scout my pack?"

"He wanted me to report back to him the path you take for the full moon run." The scout said.

"What's your name scout?" I asked

"Sam, please don't kill me,” he was begging.

“Did you come alone,” he looks at me and hesitates.

“Every other person is dead or fled but the pack doctor came on this raid with us, I left her hiding in the stride gate.”

"Sam, I will help you, but you need to help me. For now, I want you to go back to Crest Moon. Provide Alpha Derek with the route I provide you. When he gets here, we will take care of him and then I will help you and everyone else who was forced against their will, get back to your packs." I said.

I see his lip trembling and relief in his eyes.

"Thank you Alpha. I will do exactly as you say."

"Release him" I say to the guards before looking back at Sam. As soon as they release him I tell him to follow me to my

office.

“We found her, the doctor,” Max says through the mind link, “bringing her over to you now.

Standing behind the one-way glass looking at the woman in front of me, she looks very fit I would mistake her for a female warrior.

She's looking around very agitated, Rex does a flip and I wonder what's wrong with him, he hadn't been this excited since we met Jessica, I step into the interrogation room, and she looks at me with furious eyes.

“You must have caught Sam, please let him go he just a kid, he needs immediate medical attention, has nothing to do with what Alpha Dexter cooks up.”

Rex is urging me to touch and feel her soft skin, but I refrain from doing such she is the enemy sent here to ruin my legacy and my pack.

“What brought you here?”

“The pack warriors always came back wounded and the last run a lot died because they couldn't get first-hand treatment, non of the other male doctors wanted to risk their lives, so I came to treat them, they got injured.”

I'm surprised as she finished talking, risking her life for her pack, putting them first, she is just like me, and exactly what I want in a mate.

“I can't let you or him go, because I've not gotten the information I want out of you both, you should be thankful I didn't kill you on the spot.”

I turn to walk out of the room and she grabs my arm.

“Kill me if you would but please treat that boy.”

Rex screams,” MATE,” and I freeze. I knew I found her compelling but my mate, an enemy, Rex was mistaken, she doesn't let go of my hand. I think she feels it too.

“He has been treated,” I say as I walk out of the room, with the hardest expression ever. I catch the kid Sam smiling and I have a bad feeling about this.

I hope my kindness doesn't come back to haunt me.

NinaIt started like every other morning, I woke before Enzo, which had become unusual over the past months, and lay in the early light listening to him breathe beside me, the particular peace of an ordinary day with nothing urgent waiting at its center. No tribunal session, no crisis requiring his immediate attention, just a normal morning, starting the day the best way, in bed with my mate, without the weight of the world on us.He stirred eventually, reaching for me before he was fully awake his hands wrapping around my stomach, the particular instinct of a man whose body had learned where I was supposed to be even before his mind caught up.“Morning,” he said, voice rough with sleep.“Morning,” I responded, wrapping my hands around him too, burying my face in his neck. We lay together for a while longer, the unhurried quiet of two people who had earned the right to simply exist together without anything requiring them to move yet.“Want to go for a walk in the garden?” he asked ev

EnzoI found Thomas in the training field at dawn, exactly where I expected him, going through the slow deliberate forms he had taken up since his strength fully returned, the particular discipline of a warrior who had lost months of conditioning and was patiently rebuilding it.He saw me approach and did not stop moving, which I had learned was simply how he operated, conversation and motion existing comfortably alongside each other.“You’re up early,” he said.“I wanted to catch you before the day got busy,” I said.He finished the form he was working through and turned to face me properly, reading something in my expression with the particular attentiveness that had not dulled even slightly through everything he had survived.“This is a specific kind of early morning visit,” he said. “I recognize the look.”“Do you,” I said.“I raised a daughter,” he said. “I have seen this look before, on a much younger version of myself, the morning I asked Elena’s father if I could court her.” H

PetraThe vote was held in Crestmoon’s great hall, the same hall where Dexter had once delivered orders that few had dared question, transformed now into something it had never been in living memory: a room full of wolves who were about to decide their own future for the first time in the pack’s history.I had not campaigned, exactly. I had simply done the work for the past two months, the daily unglamorous labor of holding a fractured pack together while it figured out what it wanted to become, and let the wolves decide for themselves whether that work meant something.Enzo stood at the back of the hall with Nina, present as observers rather than authorities, they let me make decisions on my own leading the pack, decisions that would help make it better, which had been his specific insistence when the tribunal asked whether Silver Fang wished to oversee the proceedings.“It is not my pack’s vote to oversee,” he had told Rowan. “We will be present as witnesses if Crestmoon wants us th

JessicaThree weeks in silver-warded custody had given me considerable time to think. Not the performative reflection of someone preparing a defense. Something quieter than that, the specific clarity that came from being removed from every circumstance that had previously required me to act a version of myself for someone else’s benefit. No Dexter to manage or help me or talk me through it, I was utterly alone. No mage’s amplification pulling at something inside me that had never quite been mine to control. No Enzo to perform indifference toward or Nina to resent.Just the cell, and the silence, and the slow accumulating weight of years of bad choices condensed into a single uninterrupted reckoning.I had decided, somewhere in the second week, that I was not going to act remorseful for the tribunal. Not because I felt none, everything was differen, it was more complicated than that, but because performed remorse was simply another version of the manipulation that had defined most of m

EnzoI found the letter three days after the wedding.Anthony’s quarters had been cleared out weeks earlier, his personal effects boxed and catalogued by the pack administrators handling the transition, but a final box had been overlooked in the back of the archive room, the particular forgotten corner where things ended up when no one was certain whether they mattered enough to sort properly.I had gone looking for old territorial maps for the Crestmoon transition planning. What I found instead was a smaller box, tucked behind the maps, containing the kind of personal correspondence that elders sometimes accumulated over decades of pack service. Letters between Anthony and my father. Notes from council meetings going back further than my lifetime. And, near the bottom, an envelope that had never been sealed properly, the flap simply tucked rather than sealed, as if the writer had changed their mind about sending it at the last moment. The handwriting on the front was unfamiliar. To E

LilyThe morning of the ceremony was clear and gold, exactly the kind of weather my mother had spent three weeks anxiously checking forecasts to secure, as if she had any actual control over it and was simply going to manifest good weather through sheer force of maternal will.It had worked, apparently. She stood behind me in the small preparation room off the great hall, fussing with the back of my dress with the particular focused concentration of someone determined not to cry before the actual event required it.“Mom,” I said. “You can stop adjusting it. It’s fine.”“It’s not perfectly fine,” she said. “There’s a small pull on the left seam.”“There is not a pull on the left seam.”“There might be.”“Mom.”She stopped, hands resting on my shoulders, and met my eyes in the mirror.“I’m allowed to fuss,” she said. “I didn't plan years of birthdays, I didn’t fuss over you enough, and then I was worried sick for four months where I thought you might be dead and I am going to fuss over
