Selene

He stopped for a moment and turned, “What?" he asked, confusion written all over his face.

I smiled seeing his reaction, I stepped forward, speaking as I moved. "I said I'm pregnant.” I paused looking down to my tummy, the baby that would save my marriage.

"With our child." I finished looking up to him. He shook his head, his face going through different phases of emotions.

“How is that possible?" He finally blurted out after a while and I smiled, looking down to my belly.

“I just found out about it a few days ago, I was still contemplating…" I stopped my words immediately he spoke over me, his words leaving my hands tightly placed over my belly.

I turned, wanting to stop him but he still spoke of the harsh truth I was unwilling to face. “I still can't be with you. I love her, and I want to be with her."

My face fell. The feeling of despair I had washed away returning quickly. “I can't let the kid grow up without a father." He said and I couldn't help but scoff.

He was so fast to erase himself from our lives. He, who had always been gentle with me, preached to me about how important I was and how he would never in a million years trade me for anything, was now shamelessly leaving me with a baby.

He sighed, rubbing his temple like I was the problem. “I'm sorry. I can give you money to terminate it if you want but I can't stay." He said, and this time, I didn't stop him.

Tears welled up in my eyes, and I soon found my self gasping for air. The entire room felt too suffocating for me to breath in.

The pictures of us on the walls suddenly looked mocking, I had thought that a child was what we needed to make our family perfect but I was wrong, so wrong.

I bit hard on my tongue until I felt a metallic taste coated in my mouth. I fell to the floor, tears streaming continuously down my face, finally accepting the reality I had refused to face—he never loved me.

Shoes clamped against the marble floor, and he descended from his room, a big luggage in his hands, obvious enough that he wasn't coming back.

I stared at his retreating figure, a tiny part in me really hoping for him to turn back but he didn't.

He rather paused and shattered that little hope. “You can call me whenever you're ready for the abortion." He said before walking out the door without even looking back once.

I lowered my head yet again, hot tears streaming down my face. I tried to deny it but the reality was glaring hard at my face. He was gone, forever.

My phone buzzed, and I paused immediately. I raised my hand, and cleaned my tears with the hem of my sleeve.

I answered the call, and I put it on speaker, raising my voice slightly to give a steady impression. I spoke. "Hello?”

“Selene." I heard my mom’s voice from over the phone.

“We've finally seen your sister! She seemed quite happy. “she wanted the party moved up. The date we had chosen couldn't be used.” Mom paused, waiting for my response.

"Oh…Okay." I trailed off and she continued. “The party is now tomorrow, we called to ask if you could come to help with the decorations. Of course, if your husband is cool with it.”

I cut her off immediately. "Okay, I'll be there soon.” I said, hanging up before she could hear the crack in my voice.

I rushed upstairs, changing into a casual wear, and rushing downstairs to my car. I pushed off the thought of Xavier and ignited the car, swerving off.

"Thanks a lot. You can go to get dressed now, the party will be starting soon.” Mom said, now fully dressed in an elaborated style.

I nodded at her words, giving some final instructions to the servants before finally turning to go upstairs.

My hands moved towards my zipper when my phone suddenly rang.

Rubi, my assistant. I picked expecting some usual rant about work but rather she said omething else.

“Ma’am did you work on the 10th of August?" She asked.

“ No”. I said automatically. “Why?”

“The portal was updated, it says here that you operated on someone that day”. She paused. “I called because I remembered taking care of you on that same day. You were barely conscious.”

“A glitch. It has to be. Tell the technical team to adjust it immediately." I said

"No, ma'am it's not that simple” Rubi's voice slightly lowered. The surgery written here was the one performed by Dr. Gordon. The one we tried to cover up by revoking his licence.” She said, and the memory immediately popped up but before I could say a word, a knock came on the door.

“Selene, are you ready yet?" My mom’s voice came from outside.

I moved towards it “Almost." I said before pulling down my outfit. I returned towards the mirror for a final glance. “Let's talk about this later. I need to go"

"No, wait”…I hung up. I changed into the new clothes and walked downstairs.

My mom waved at me from a distance and I smiled, walking forward but someone suddenly pushed past me and went directly to hug her. Not roughly, but with the confidence that came with knowing exactly where they belonged.

Mom laughed joyfully, hugging her back tightly.

The woman turned around.

Aurora

My breath caught.

Those eyes, that smile. No! It couldn't be

My head snapped

I turned my headctowards my mother but she only confirmed my suspicion. “Selene, meet your sister."

  • The taste Of Revenge   BOTH COLUMNS

XAVIER'S POVThe thing about debt is it doesn't feel like debt when you're building something. It feels like fuel. It feels like the gap between the speed you're moving and the speed you need and you borrow the gap and tell yourself it'll close, because you've closed gaps before and because everything I've ever built came from exactly this kind of borrowed velocity, and what I built is extraordinary, which proves that the method works, which means the current gap is temporary, which also means it's contained and properly managed. I've been managing this for eighteen months and I'm good at managing things. It's the one skill nobody ever had to teach me. Control, containment, the discipline of never letting anyone see the load-bearing wall until it's already reinforced. I've managed boards, managed a couple women, managed myself, most days, into something that passes for stability. This isn't different…it shouldn't be.I tell myself that at two in the morning, and again at six, and aga

  • The taste Of Revenge   THIRTY MILLION REASONS TO WAIT

My whole body goes still the way prey goes still, betting everything on stillness being the same thing as invisible. The pipes groan somewhere behind the wall, that low mechanical sigh of water finding its way back to wherever water goes when it's finished being useful, and I count the seconds it buys me the way I once counted rent money, down to the decimal, down to the bone.I gently lower the lid of the laptop the way I'd lower a coffin, if at all. Slow, reverent, both palms flat against the aluminum until it clicks home soft as a secret keeping itself. My reflection watches me do it, ghosted there in the black window behind the desk, and for a moment I don't recognize her. Pale, dry-mouthed, eyes too bright, too wide, like something that's just fed and hasn't wiped its mouth yet. I step back and smoothen my robe over my hips, the silk feeling cool and indifferent against the skin that still remembers the heat of what I just saw.The one line that caught my attention, bracketed in

  • The taste Of Revenge   THE ARCHITECT OF HIS UNDOING

AURORA'S POVMy hairbrush catches on a snarl and my fingers won't loosen around the handle. Christ! My knuckles are already going white, a small tremor climbing from wrist to elbow like something trying to escape through my skin. I set the brush down and watch my own hand in the mirror, flat against the marble, my fingers spread wide, willing the shaking into stillness the way you'd will a struck match not to catch. It stops, eventually. It always stops if I wait long enough, if I remember to breathe through my mouth instead of my nose so the sound of it doesn't betray me to the empty room. Two mornings as a wife. My body hasn't caught up to what my mind already knows how to perform. I study my reflection the way I used to study every room before I decide where to stand in them, the practiced softness around my eyes, my mouth arranged into something that photographs as radiant. I built this face the way I built everything else I own. Brick by careful brick, over years, out of nothing

  • The taste Of Revenge   MARRIED AGAIN

XAVIER'S POVMy head is pounding before I even open my eyes.Christ! Champagne. Too much of it, poured by people who kept calling it "the best day of my life" like repetition might make it true. I lie there a second, running the inventory the way I run everything else. My head…pounding. My mouth… dry as sand. My body…heavy as fuck in a way that has nothing to do with sleep and everything to do with six hours of performing.Fragments come back before the full picture does. Toasts I don't remember giving, my own voice, too smooth, too rehearsed, thanking a hall full of people for witnessing something I'm still not sure I survived, Aurora's hand under the table, gripping mine harder than the moment called for, like she needed the anchor as much as I did.And the drive to the Oceanside, well that part was clear enough. Her hands, placed on my thigh, the doorman's carefully blank face, the kind you pay a man well to maintain when the groom looks like he'd rather be facing a hostile takeove

  • The taste Of Revenge   THE VOWS

XAVIER'S POVMy collar feels two sizes too small, and I've checked it three times already, certain it's shrunk in the last ten minutes from nothing but the heat building under my jacket."Stop touching it you fool," Noah mutters beside me with a wide grin. My best man, adjusting his own cufflinks. "You look like you're trying to strangle yourself before she even gets here.""I'm fine man.""But you've scanned the crowd six times in the last two freaking minutes."I make myself stop.‘Enough!’ I say, almost like a whisper though. The truth is I already know what I'm looking for, and she isn't there. Some small, humiliating part of me kept scanning the room anyway, like the eighth pass might rearrange the seating chart in my favor… Like reality owes me a rewrite.“Jesus christ…get a grip.” Selene didn't come…I don't know why I expected otherwise. What did I think was going to happen? that she'd walk in wearing something dark and devastating just to prove she could sit through the wrec

  • The taste Of Revenge   THE WEIGHT OF NOTHING

I don't tell Damian about the card delivered and most definitely, the trauma it gave me afterwards…I can't, not yet at least. So instead, I carry the invitation upstairs with me as though putting a little distance between it and the rest of the house will somehow make the decision easier but it doesn't. I sit on the edge of the bed and let it rest in my lap, staring at the elegant gold lettering until the names begin to blur again. ‘Xavier Adrian ... .Aurora Hart’ not only did she take Xavier from me but also dad's last name too. I trace the edge of the envelope with my thumb, then stop when I realize I'm gripping it hard enough to bend the corner. Carefully, almost instinctively, I smooth it flat again and the gesture makes me shake my head at myself. Of all the things I should care about right now, preserving the invitation to their wedding shouldn't be one of them, and yet here I am.I tell myself to decide, but it should be simple… Either I go to the wedding or I don't. Instead,
