LOGINAhtisa’s Pov
My eyes snapped open. Air rushed into my lungs like my head had been inside water for a long time. My chest rose sharply as if my body had forgotten how to breathe. My fingers curled against the cold surface, nails pressing into the wood. Wait, I was sitting. I wasn't lying on the floor dying. “... Officer Vale?" The voice sounded familiar but still, not too familiar. I blinked trying to get my vision to focus. Then it started coming in fragments. White walls. Metal table.. I was in an interrogation room. My heartbeat stuttered. “No…” I said under my breath. It couldn't be… “Are you alright?" The same voice asked again, worried. I turned my head to the voice and froze. He was there, sitting across from me looking composed. Not the same man who had held me. His gaze fixed on me. Lucien Blackwell. My breath caught. I had just died. I remembered dying. The blood. The pain. Adrian's voice. Lucien's arms around me. My chest tightened. “... This isn't real," I murmured. Lucien's brows furrowed. “If this is your idea of a strategy, it's not going to work." I looked around again, more carefully this time. Everything was exactly as I remembered. Three years ago. I was back to the day I made my first mistake. The day I destroyed the person who loved me most. My stomach twisted. “... Officer Vale?" Someone called again, firmly this time. I exhaled. Once. Twice. I needed control. My gaze lifted back to Lucien. He still hadn't looked away and now that I was truly seeing him. There was something in his eyes that I hadn't noticed before… as if he knew something wasn't right and was just playing along. “You said you didn't do it," I said, trying to steady my voice. Lucien leaned back slightly, chains shifting the way he moved. He shrugged. I stared at him blankly. He sighed. “I didn't do it" My throat tightened. In my past life, I hadn't listened. I hadn't given him a chance. I had just walked into this room already convinced he was guilty because Adrian told me so. Because I had trusted him blindly. My hands curled slightly under the table. Not this time. “Then explain," I said. Lucien tilted his head, eyes glinting. “Didn't Adrian tell you my offense?" A chill ran down my spine. He held my gaze. "I want to hear it from you,” I said, crossing my arms. I swallowed. “Start from the beginning," I said, firmer now. “The allegations against you involve financial misconduct, illegal transfers and breach of corporate trust. If you are innocent, then explain the discrepancies." Lucien stared at me for a moment, then shifted. "Who gave you the case?” "Answer my question,” I replied. "And you answer mine,” he countered. The silence between us stretched and I knew he wasn't going to talk if I didn't. "Adrian.” I said "Then he can answer your question.” My breath caught. "Do you want to be ruled guilty?” A smile curved up his lips. "If he says I am," he said, shrugging. “It's not like you are going to believe me” I sighed. Everything had changed. I wasn't that same girl again but I didn't know how to say that to him. Then the door opened, my assistant came in and whispered in my ears that Adrian was waiting for me outside the room. The air in the room shifted. What could he be doing here? I stepped outside and there he was, standing in the doorway like nothing had ever happened. Like he hadn't watched me die. Like he hadn't left me on the floor… bleeding. My heart started to beat fast as the memory crashed over me again. She will be dead soon. My fingers trembled at my sides. “Adrian." I forced it through my mouth. He occupied the doorway like he owned it, his gaze briefly flicking to Lucien inside the room before settling on me. “I heard you were handling the case personally," he said. “I just thought I should check in" I searched his face for anything that resembled the man I had seen in my last life. But nothing. He looked the same. The same man who I had once trusted with everything. “Just check in?" I scoffed. “You don't need to be here" He lifted his brows. “I think I have a right to be involved… you know, I brought the case to your department” And in my last life, it was the last case I worked on before my profession started to threaten him. You had a right to kill me too, didn't you? The thought came uninvited. I pushed it down. “This is an official investigation" Adrian laughed then his face changed when he saw my face. I was serious. "You've always taken your job too seriously,” he said, clearing his throat. "It's one of the things I admire about you” Really? I didn't say anything. “But this case is straightforward," he continued. “There's no need to drag it out. He stepped closer, placing a file in my hands. I clutched it tightly. I knew the file. I had signed it before without doubt. I hadn't even thought about it. “You have everything you need right there," he continued. “Evidence, statements, financial records. It's all been verified" I smiled. "Where did you get them from?” I asked. A question I hadn't bother asking the first time but this time, I wouldn't make the same mistake. "It doesn't matter,” he said smoothly. "Just sign.”The yellow paper felt rough against my fingers. I sat at my desk, reading the words Adrian had written, but my heart remained entirely cold. He remembered the rain, the green dress, and the tiny coffee shop down by the old station. In my past life, a letter like this would have made me sob with gratitude. I would have packed my bags, forgiven him for everything, and begged him to come back home. Now, I just felt a deep sense of disgust. It was so obviously a script, carefully designed to pull at my old strings.Elara walked into the office, carrying a tray of fresh water. She noticed the paper in my hand and paused. "Is that what the front desk sent up?""Yes," I said, tossing the paper onto the desk. It fluttered and slid across the smooth surface, stopping near the edge. "Adrian left it. He is trying to act like a broken man who just wants his wife back."Elara picked it up, her eyes scanning the lines quickly. She let out a short, harsh laugh. "He is blaming Isabella for everythi
The room smelled like old smoke and cheap cleaner. I sat on the edge of the squeaky bed, staring at my phone for what felt like the hundredth time today. Nothing. No texts, no missed calls, just a blank screen. Isabella had been gone for over twenty-four hours now, ever since she supposedly went to secure that deal with Vanguard’s assistant.I dialed her number again, pressing the phone tightly against my ear. It rang three times before going straight to voicemail."Damn it, Isabella!" I slammed my fist down onto the flimsy mattress, the springs groaning loudly under my weight. "Pick up the phone!"She had the money. I knew she did. She was supposed to get half a million dollars for those routing files, and now she wasn't answering me. The thought of her sitting in some luxury hotel while I was rotting in this dump made my blood boil. She was playing me. I could feel it in my gut.A sharp knock on the door made me jump. I stood up quickly, thinking it might finally be her, and yanked
The rain did not stop by the time morning came. I barely slept two hours, my mind spinning with everything Lucien had said to me in the study the night before. I arrived at the office early, long before the rest of the staff, wanting to lose myself in the work so I wouldn't have to think about how warm my skin felt every time his name crossed my mind.Elara was already waiting at her desk outside my door, a large paper bag from the bakery downstairs sitting next to her computer. She looked up and gave me a bright, supportive smile as I walked up."I got us the good breakfast pastries," she said, lifting the bag. "And the strongest coffee they had. We are going to need it if we are going into those old server files today.""You are a lifesaver," I said, unlocking my office door and holding it open for her. "Bring it all inside. Let's start before the phone starts ringing."We set up at the small round table in the corner of my room. Elara pulled out her laptop and connected it to the
The drive to Lucien’s house was completely quiet. Rain started to tap against the glass just as we pulled into his long driveway. I stared out at the dark trees passing by, feeling the tension from the long day at the office slowly leave my shoulders.Victor stopped the car right by the front entrance. He didn't say a word, just stepped out with a large umbrella to open my door and guide me inside out of the damp cold.Lucien’s private home was different from the grand, showy mansion Adrian had insisted on buying with my father's money. It was large, but it felt private and closed off from the rest of the city. The lights inside were soft and warm."Victor will bring the folders up to the study," Lucien said, taking his long dark coat off and handing it to a waiting maid. He turned his dark eyes to me, looking at my tired face. "Have you had anything to eat tonight, Ahtisa?""I haven't really been hungry," I admitted, crossing my arms tightly against the chill."I thought so," he mu
The coffee in my mug had gone completely cold, but I barely noticed. I sat behind my desk, staring at the small glowing dot on my tablet screen. The dot was moving slowly down the main street of the city, heading straight toward the old docks near the water.Elara knocked softly before stepping into the room. She carried a neat stack of folders, but her face was bright with excitement. She shut the door behind her and leaned against it, letting out a breath she seemed to be holding for an hour."The swap is fully done, Ahtisa," Elara said, her voice low as she walked over to my desk. "I personally checked the shared drive before I came up here. The real files are wiped. The only thing Isabella has on her flash drive right now is the dummy routing data your father made. If she plugs it into Vanguard’s system, they will see exactly what we want them to see."I looked down at the tablet. The little glowing dot had stopped moving. It was sitting right on top of the harbor café."She i
The sun was setting by the time I finished organizing my desk. After the confrontation with Adrian this morning, a quiet stillness had settled over my office, but I knew the peace would not last. People like Adrian and Isabella did not just disappear into the shadows when they lost. They bit back.My laptop screen flashed, and Elara’s private messaging window popped open.Ahtisa, the fish is biting, the message read. Isabella Thorne just initiated an encrypted outgoing call from her laptop. It is routing straight to the corporate headquarters of Vanguard Shipping.A cold, calm feeling washed over me. Vanguard Shipping was my father’s biggest and most ruthless competitor. They had been trying to steal our eastern trade routes for over three years."Connect the audio feed to my line, Elara," I murmured into my headset.A soft click echoed in my ear, and then the sound of static filled the line, followed by Isabella’s voice. She didn't sound like the sweet, gentle girl she pretended t
The room smelled like cheap bleach and old cigarettes. I lay on the thin mattress of the motel bed, staring at the peeling wallpaper on the ceiling. My phone was completely dead, and I didn't even have the energy to find a charger. After Isabella threw me out, I spent the remaining cash in my pock
The clock on the dashboard of my car showed it was nearly eleven at night by the time I finally drove out of the company parking lot. My shoulders felt incredibly tight, and my eyes were burning from hours of reviewing the new shipping contracts with Mr. Harrison and the legal team. It had been a
The news of Adrian’s business collapse traveled fast, hitting the city news stands by the middle of the afternoon. When I returned to the mansion later that evening, the entire house felt strangely cold and empty. The usual loud noise of the television was gone, and none of the servants were walki
