Ahtisa’s Pov

"Get out.”

Adrian blinked, clearly not expecting it. "What did you just say to me?”

I pushed his files in his hands.

"I said get out,” I repeated, calmly. "This is my case. I will handle it.”

I turned to leave but then his voice rose. "Ahtisa, don't be difficult”

I stopped. "And don't interfere”

His mouth dropped open and before he could give a response, I was already inside the room, shutting him out.

I closed my eyes, calming my breath. When I opened my eyes again, Lucien was looking at me with amusement.

I sat down and the door bursted open. I stilled. Adrian stalked in, his face blazing with anger.

“You're overstepping," he said.

I clenched my fists.

"Am I?” I said, lifting my head. “Or are you used to me not having boundaries"

His jaw flexed. For a moment, he said nothing. Then, his expression hardened.

“You're making this more complicated than it needs to be," he muttered. “You have the evidence. Do your job.

"That is what I am doing!”

"You… you are acting strange,” he said after a while.

"Then, maybe you should get used to it.”

I motioned for the assistant to get him away from the room. I tied my hair at the back and sat down again.

“Well," Lucien said, leaning forward. “That was interesting"

I didn't say anything immediately. I tried to gather myself but then decided to lock the door this time.

"Locking the door?” Lucien asked. "Should I be worried?”

I moved back to my seat. A smile on my lips. "I won't arrest you.”

"Maybe you should”

“I don't follow instructions well anymore"

“An unfortunate trait for a police officer, don't you think?"

I shrugged. “Or a necessary one?"

“Fine," he murmured. “Cut the pretense"

“What do you mean?"

“You want something," he stated.

“Yes," I said.

“And whatever it is… " he continued, gaze darkening. “... It involves him."

"Aren't you too smart?” I said, lightening the tension with a laugh but he didn't.

I cleared my throat.

“So tell me exactly,” he said. "What are you planning?”

I leaned forward on the table. "I need your help”

He nodded.

"I want you to help me expose my husband,” I said, steadying my voice.

He looked at me then he laughed. His eyes roamed my face. I squeezed my hands.

“I'm serious!"

He blinked.

“I'm sorry," he said, shaking his head. “I must have misheard you"

“You didn't"

“You want me," he repeated slowly, “to help you expose your husband."

"Correct”

“This seems to me like a trap. You trust his word over evidence," he said, factly. “This doesn't sound like you."

He raked his hands through his hair. “And now you want to work with me?"

I held his eyes. “I'm not that woman anymore"

"No?” He murmured. "Because from where I'm sitting you look exactly the same.”

I exhaled softly. “Don't judge by looks alone"

"Convenient answer”

"True answer”

He watched me carefully.

"Why?” He asked. "Why would you want to expose him?”

"I don't just want to expose him…" I said, crossing my legs. “I want to dismantle everything he has built… his power, his reputation, his control… until there is nothing left for him to stand on.”

I continued. "And he understands exactly what it feels like to lose everything he once took from me.”

"All of this sounds very…" he paused, searching for the word to use. “... Convenient"

"It is”

"And you expect me to believe you?”

"No.”

The word came out of my mouth quickly. I rested my hands on my chin.

"You shouldn't trust me,” I said. "I don't expect you to”

"Then why should I agree?”

I shrugged. "Because you need me”

Lucien's lips curved faintly. "Do I?”

"Yes.” I said. "You are being framed and the evidence against you isn't clean. I can help you.”

“Well, I don't think I need you," he said. "I could hire someone else.”

“Believe me or don't," I said. “But if you walk out of this without my help, you won't get another chance to clear your name."

"So, you are serious?”

I nodded.

He laughed

“You are either telling the truth," he said slowly. “Or this is the most elaborate trap I've ever seen"

My lips curved up. “Which do you think it is?"

He didn't answer immediately. Instead, he leaned forward slightly, lowering his voice.

“The woman I know," he murmured. “Would never betray her husband."

My gaze didn't waver. “As I said, that woman is gone."

"People don't change that quickly”

"Not when they have a reason"

I wouldn't be the weak girl I once was in my past life. Lucien still didn't look convinced. I suddenly stood up from my chair.

Lucien's gaze followed my every movement and I stopped in front of him.

He raised an eyebrow.

I was close… close enough that he could see every detail in my expression.

No hesitation as I locked my lips with his. My heart was beating fast but I pushed further.

Lucien went completely still.

And for a moment, I forgot every pain in my heart.

All I focused on was Lucien. At first, he didn't move, then he thrust in deeper.

I pulled away to look at him. Lucien licked his bottom lip.

Blood rushed to my cheeks.

“Now, do you think I would do that if I was still loyal to him?"

His eyes roamed my body and I suddenly felt naked under his gaze.

"Well,” he muttered. "This certainly complicates things”

I straightened. Lucien held my gaze for a moment longer.

"Alright, Officer Vale," he said. “Let’s make your husband regret ever hurting you”

The yellow paper felt rough against my fingers. I sat at my desk, reading the words Adrian had written, but my heart remained entirely cold. He remembered the rain, the green dress, and the tiny coffee shop down by the old station. In my past life, a letter like this would have made me sob with gratitude. I would have packed my bags, forgiven him for everything, and begged him to come back home. Now, I just felt a deep sense of disgust. It was so obviously a script, carefully designed to pull at my old strings.Elara walked into the office, carrying a tray of fresh water. She noticed the paper in my hand and paused. "Is that what the front desk sent up?""Yes," I said, tossing the paper onto the desk. It fluttered and slid across the smooth surface, stopping near the edge. "Adrian left it. He is trying to act like a broken man who just wants his wife back."Elara picked it up, her eyes scanning the lines quickly. She let out a short, harsh laugh. "He is blaming Isabella for everythi

The room smelled like old smoke and cheap cleaner. I sat on the edge of the squeaky bed, staring at my phone for what felt like the hundredth time today. Nothing. No texts, no missed calls, just a blank screen. Isabella had been gone for over twenty-four hours now, ever since she supposedly went to secure that deal with Vanguard’s assistant.I dialed her number again, pressing the phone tightly against my ear. It rang three times before going straight to voicemail."Damn it, Isabella!" I slammed my fist down onto the flimsy mattress, the springs groaning loudly under my weight. "Pick up the phone!"She had the money. I knew she did. She was supposed to get half a million dollars for those routing files, and now she wasn't answering me. The thought of her sitting in some luxury hotel while I was rotting in this dump made my blood boil. She was playing me. I could feel it in my gut.A sharp knock on the door made me jump. I stood up quickly, thinking it might finally be her, and yanked

The rain did not stop by the time morning came. I barely slept two hours, my mind spinning with everything Lucien had said to me in the study the night before. I arrived at the office early, long before the rest of the staff, wanting to lose myself in the work so I wouldn't have to think about how warm my skin felt every time his name crossed my mind.Elara was already waiting at her desk outside my door, a large paper bag from the bakery downstairs sitting next to her computer. She looked up and gave me a bright, supportive smile as I walked up."I got us the good breakfast pastries," she said, lifting the bag. "And the strongest coffee they had. We are going to need it if we are going into those old server files today.""You are a lifesaver," I said, unlocking my office door and holding it open for her. "Bring it all inside. Let's start before the phone starts ringing."We set up at the small round table in the corner of my room. Elara pulled out her laptop and connected it to the

The drive to Lucien’s house was completely quiet. Rain started to tap against the glass just as we pulled into his long driveway. I stared out at the dark trees passing by, feeling the tension from the long day at the office slowly leave my shoulders.Victor stopped the car right by the front entrance. He didn't say a word, just stepped out with a large umbrella to open my door and guide me inside out of the damp cold.Lucien’s private home was different from the grand, showy mansion Adrian had insisted on buying with my father's money. It was large, but it felt private and closed off from the rest of the city. The lights inside were soft and warm."Victor will bring the folders up to the study," Lucien said, taking his long dark coat off and handing it to a waiting maid. He turned his dark eyes to me, looking at my tired face. "Have you had anything to eat tonight, Ahtisa?""I haven't really been hungry," I admitted, crossing my arms tightly against the chill."I thought so," he mu

The coffee in my mug had gone completely cold, but I barely noticed. I sat behind my desk, staring at the small glowing dot on my tablet screen. The dot was moving slowly down the main street of the city, heading straight toward the old docks near the water.Elara knocked softly before stepping into the room. She carried a neat stack of folders, but her face was bright with excitement. She shut the door behind her and leaned against it, letting out a breath she seemed to be holding for an hour."The swap is fully done, Ahtisa," Elara said, her voice low as she walked over to my desk. "I personally checked the shared drive before I came up here. The real files are wiped. The only thing Isabella has on her flash drive right now is the dummy routing data your father made. If she plugs it into Vanguard’s system, they will see exactly what we want them to see."I looked down at the tablet. The little glowing dot had stopped moving. It was sitting right on top of the harbor café."She i

The sun was setting by the time I finished organizing my desk. After the confrontation with Adrian this morning, a quiet stillness had settled over my office, but I knew the peace would not last. People like Adrian and Isabella did not just disappear into the shadows when they lost. They bit back.My laptop screen flashed, and Elara’s private messaging window popped open.Ahtisa, the fish is biting, the message read. Isabella Thorne just initiated an encrypted outgoing call from her laptop. It is routing straight to the corporate headquarters of Vanguard Shipping.A cold, calm feeling washed over me. Vanguard Shipping was my father’s biggest and most ruthless competitor. They had been trying to steal our eastern trade routes for over three years."Connect the audio feed to my line, Elara," I murmured into my headset.A soft click echoed in my ear, and then the sound of static filled the line, followed by Isabella’s voice. She didn't sound like the sweet, gentle girl she pretended t

The silence in the room was so thick you could hear a pin drop.Adrian stood frozen by the table, his face completely pale.
