Chapter 3 Cruel Shawn

Author: The Handsome Guy
I took my seat, and he slid a phone over.

"What is this?"

Donald paused for a moment, perhaps hesitating, but in the end, he unlocked the phone. One look at the screen was all it took. I started shivering uncontrollably.

The screen showed Shawn standing in a shadowed alley, cigarette in hand, handing money to a group of rough-looking men.

Donald noticed my stunned silence and adjusted his glasses. "He's far crueler than I am. Yes, I did kick you out, but he's the one who paid those vagrants to defile you. He would do anything just to get you, even at the cost of destroying you."

Every word he spoke dragged a nightmare back into my mind. Twisted, haggard, hideous. Jeers, mocking laughter, and my body's agony ringing loudly in my mind. I was taken back to the moment where my unborn child was lost.

"Enough!" I roared as I stood up, and I had to gulp in large mouthfuls of air just to breathe.

My face felt ice-cold.

I could not tell whether my tears came from the pain of that night or from the fact that the love I had believed in for three years had been built on something so filthy.

I stared at Donald and hissed, "You're no better than him. Telling me the truth is just your way of saying the man I risked my life going back to Imperia to date is worse off than you."

My voice turned raspy, and I let my tears fall freely. "You want to prove that I'll never be happy if I left you. You want to prove that you're my best choice, but you're no different than him."

Donald fell silent for a moment before speaking. "Yes, I'm a bastard, and I've failed you, but I never would've switched you out for anyone else. However, I've heard that he's going to change his wife.

"He brought Cecelia to all kinds of events behind your back and even brought her to his family's estate. And…"

He paused again, his sharp gaze still on me. "They got their marriage license. All I did was kick you out. He exiled you from the whole marriage. Come back to me, Yvonne."

Everything inside me went blank. The pain had gone so far beyond its limit that I could no longer feel it.

I opened my mouth and was about to refuse him when someone suddenly grabbed me hard and dragged me up. A furious roar thundered beside me. "As if, Donald!"

Shawn used so much force, he nearly snapped my neck. "You're unbelievable. You got snubbed, and the first thing you did was get comfort from your old flame?"

I did not say anything or even struggle. All I did was stare at him.

Donald stood up. "Let her go!"

A group of bodyguards surrounded him. Shawn snickered, and dark cruelty flickered on his face. "You have no right to speak here. She's my wife! You send her gifts every year and can't even cut ties with her. If you loved her so much, why'd you cheat on her?"

Donald went white, and he clenched his fists. "Don't get too cocky. You'll end up just like me." He turned to me. "Come to me once you've made up your mind, Yvonne."

He shoved Shawn away before he could say anything and stormed off. The air turned thick and heavy, filled with suffocating silence.

I went around Shawn and got into the car. He followed me, growling in panic, "You're not going with him, meeting with him, or even staying in touch with him!"

I gave no response, and that whipped him into a frenzy. He clenched my shoulders and shook me hard. "I'm talking to you! You've gone through one divorce. You won't want a second. He dumped you, and your family ignored you.

"Only I was kind to you. Don't fall for his life. Just marry me and live the life you were meant to…"

He called deception, humiliation, and near-murder kind. I hung my head low and chuckled.

Shawn pulled my head back to his side, and his eyes were filled with an impatient need for answers. "What's so funny?"

I refused to look at him, so I asked, "Are you hiding anything from me, besides Cecelia?"

He froze and turned to the window stiffly. He didn't confess, but his silence was the answer anyway.

I laughed again, and the sound grew louder with every passing second. The ache in my heart started as a dull throb, but it rose and rose until there was only agony.

My raspy laugh scratched the claustrophobic space like a phantom scratching their claws across a blackboard.

"Enough! Stop laughing!" Shawn raised his voice and tried to cover my mouth.

Fury burned and crashed in my chest, threatening to tear me apart. I grabbed his hand and bit down hard.

Only when the taste of iron filled my mouth did I finally let go.

"You're a bastard, Shawn! You want to know who I love most? Yeah, it's Donald. I shouldn't have gotten that divorce. He might be scum, but he didn't knock her up!"

Shawn's breathing intensified, and his eyes gleamed with violence. He wrapped his hand around my throat, and his eyes went crimson.

"You think I don't have second thoughts? I can have any woman I want, and yet I ended up with something used that has a graveyard for her womb! Donald has a good eye for women. At least Cecelia knows how to please a man better than you ever did."

It was a rainy day when it happened, when Shawn found me. I was on my recliner, my fingers caressing my cat's fuzzy ears."I've found you, Yvonne…" He was shivering from excitement, and he stood in the rain like some lost hero finally coming home after the war.Perhaps my serene response came from the fact that I had let the past go. His presence stirred nothing inside me, not even hatred. "Come in. You shouldn't stay out in the rain."He straightened and blurted eagerly, "Yes, of course!"…As Shawn dried his hair with a towel, he began thinking of what he should say. Finally, he said, "This is a tiny place. Come back to Imperia."I looked at this man, the one I used to love and hate. There was nothing but calm in my gaze as I replied blandly, "Yes, you have a big villa, but I found no happiness there. This place is small, but it's enough for me."Shawn's smile froze as panic swept through his eyes. "I know it's all my fault. I promise I'll repent my mistakes. I'll make it up t

A few hours later, Donald came back to my ward. He wouldn't leave, no matter what I threw at him. The guy was behaving like a gum stuck to the soles of my shoes. He held a bowl of soup and blew on it until it cooled down.He tried to feed me, but I turned my head away."You're the reason Cecelia came to Imperia. You know she's the one who told the vagrants to sexually assault me," I said tonelessly."Yvonne, I…" Donald's lips thinned into a line as he quickly tried to explain himself.I held up my hand, stopping him. "Why would you even do that? You're nothing like the man I knew. You're the richest man in Porton. You have all the power you want right at your fingertips."You could've kept her involvement a secret if you wanted to, and Shawn would never figure out that she was behind it. That's why she's still breathing, while the vagrants are dead."For a long time after that, the only sound in the ward was my labored breathing. The atmosphere between us was so tense and depress

"Yvonne, please. Please give me another chance. I'd never hurt you again, I swear. I was a total idiot. Please, give me a chance, for old times' sake. We're childhood friends."Shawn was panicking. He crawled over to the bed and tugged on the blanket as he begged for another chance. It was funny because he didn't even have the courage to hold my hand. His tears only made me feel even more disgusted. "What a hypocrite. If you had kept a closer eye, Cecelia never could've had the chance to kill the baby. You knew our history, but still you hooked up with her. Don't call what you feel for me, love. If anything, it has to be hate. "After all, you chose to trust her, not me."No number of words could make up for what he did to me. Honestly, I shouldn't have expected anything from men. I shouldn't have relied on someone else to give me happiness.I got a divorce once, and I could do it again. So, I wiped the angry tears away and looked down at Shawn. "Enough talk. You and Cecelia alrea

That took the last sliver of my strength, and I fell. The chains clanked, and two terror-filled voices screeched."Yvonne!""Yvonne!"Time felt like it had come to a standstill. Then, I heard noise. More specifically, a cacophony of shouts. Sometimes, I would hear men arguing. Sometimes, I would hear someone shouting that it was snowing.I woke up on the day of the first snow in winter. Shawn's head was resting on the edge of my bed. He was fast asleep, but the tiniest rustle woke him. When he noticed I had regained consciousness, all the grogginess in his eyes disappeared. The edges of his eyes went red immediately. He held my hand tightly, and his voice was dry and raspy. "You're finally awake."My eyes were empty and bereft of emotions as I stared at him, unblinking and unmoving. His smile froze before it slowly died down. "I can explain. Yes, I hired those vagrants, but I only wanted to scare you. I just wanted you to come back to Imperia. I didn't think they would…"Agony

I was thunderstruck. The pain in my chest robbed me of air so quickly that I could barely breathe. When I opened my mouth, he clenched my chin."Do you like biting yourself that much? Cecelia's right. You really are having an affair with him."His fury burned right in front of me, stripped of all the warmth he used to show me. Blood trickled down the corners of my mouth. Everything was fading to black, and I fainted.…When I woke up, I found myself chained to a bed. Cecelia was right beside the bed, smiling as she served a hot brew."Shawn said you were too excited, so he wanted you to drink this."There was no one else in the room, so Cecelia no longer bothered pretending. She grabbed my hair and forced my head back.I held back the pain as much as I could and asked in a trembling voice, "I've always treated you well. Why…"She clenched my chin and suddenly burst into laughter. "Why? Because you're a fool! You're an idiot for so eagerly showing me kindness! I hate the arrogan
