Myla

The gate wolves called it before Myla saw them.

Two riders on the north road, moving slow.

She reached the courtyard as Rhea and Corin came through the gate. Rhea was walking her horse the last stretch on foot, favouring her right leg. Corin sat his saddle like he had forgotten how to get down. He was holding a leather satchel against his chest with both hands.

Elna crossed the yard before anyone said anything.

"Give it to me before you fall on it."

Corin blinked at her. Then he handed her

AlecThe stable boy found the empty stall before anyone found the empty room.He came to the kitchen door with feed still on his hands, apologising for the interruption and explaining that he had been told to report whenever a horse went out before he arrived. He had arrived at half past six.The bay mare was already gone. Her saddle and bridle were gone too.Alec was drinking his second coffee. He set it down.“Which mare?”“The Luna’s.”Alec was already on his feet. The morning gate wolf was a boy named Farrin, seventeen years old and three months into the rotation. He straightened when Alec came through the archway and did not stop until Alec told him to speak.“She rode out at first light, Alpha. She said she was going to check the eastern watch. She said Seb asked her to run a spare rotation because Corin was still on rest.”“She said Sebastian asked her.”“Yes, Alpha.”“You did not check the rotation board.”Farrin’s face drained. “She’s the Luna. I didn’t think I needed to.”“Y

MylaWord came in from the southern rider before breakfast.Thistlebrook’s wagon was two hours from the border. For the first hour after the news, Crimson River moved the way it had not moved in weeks. Elna sent two apprentices ahead with clean crates and inventory lists. Rowan pulled the cold-storage keys and had them ready at the gate. Seb assigned an escort of six wolves to meet the wagon at the last river crossing. Tomas came down to the courtyard with his coat on and did not sit down.Alec put on the heavier coat he only wore for formal business. Myla saw him check the seal at his belt twice.“You want me to stay behind,” she said.“I want you visible. So does the pack.” He did not soften it. “Thistlebrook is doing this because I asked personally. They should see who they’re doing it for.”She nodded and went for her own coat. The border road ran along the river for the last half mile, then climbed a low rise to the actual boundary stone. The wagon came into view just as they cre

AlecShe came to the study before first light.Alec had not slept. Seb had been in the chair across from him for the last two hours, and neither of them had said much. When the door opened without a knock, they both knew.Myla closed it behind her.She was already dressed for the day, hair tied back, a folded page in one hand. Not the pattern list. A different page. Alec knew before she set it down what it was."I need you to read this."She put it on the desk between them.Alec did not touch it yet. He looked at her first. Her face was tired but steady. She had made her decision. This was the visit where she asked him to sign it.Seb had already leaned forward and picked up the paper. He read the sentence about holding no separate claim twice before reaching the end. Then he rested the page against his knee."Myla.""Read it before you say anything."He read it once more.Alec reached across and took it.He read it slowly. The wording was clean. She had picked every phrase to protect

Then he handed her the satchel with the careful, wide-eyed slowness of a man who had walked four days holding one thing.Elna opened it on the nearest supply table. She did not gasp or cry. She looked. Then she said, quietly, "Some of it's viable.""How much?" Alec had come up behind Myla without her hearing him.Elna sorted the roots into two piles with quick hands. One pile was the size of both her fists. The other was smaller."Enough for Poppy. Enough for the elders. Enough for the trainees to finish their co

AlecThe flare had not come.Alec stood at the study window and watched the northern ridge instead of the map on his desk, because the map could not tell him anything he did not already know. Rhea and Corin were due back by midday tomorrow. If they had found the stream, they would have sent a flare by dusk to confirm it. Dusk had come and gone an hour ago. That did not necessarily mean they had failed. It meant they had not yet succeeded. He was not sure which was worse to sit with. The knock at the door was Seb's. Alec knew before he knocked. His brother had a specific rhythm to how he announced himself, three short raps, never louder than necessary. It was one of a hundred small consistencies Alec had noticed over thirty years and never mentioned to anyone."Come in."Seb came in with a folded piece of paper in one hand and the look of a man who had already lost the argument he was about to start."You have a minute?""I have as long as this takes."Seb crossed to the desk and set t

  • Twin Alphas' Rare Luna    Chapter Seventy-Three: The Route She Changed

SebastianSeb noticed the change before Rowan finished pinning the morning rotations to the board.Myla’s name had been removed from the eastern shelter inspection.Tessa’s had been written in its place. He read the line twice, as if the ink might rearrange itself into something less obvious.“Did Tessa volunteer for this?” he asked.Rowan glanced at the board. “Myla changed it last night.”“Of course she did.”“She said Tessa needs experience with the outer shelters.”“Tessa has experience.”“That’s what I said.”“And?”Rowan gave him a tired look. “She asked whether I disagreed with the assignment strongly enough to overrule the Luna.”Seb almost laughed. That sounded like Myla. Calm, reasonable and already holding the answer she expected you to give.“Where did she put herself?”“Western records. Supply reconciliation.”A task that required no partner and kept her indoors for most of the day.Convenient.The side door opened before he could decide whether to confront her. A young p
