Aria

Today is officially one of the worst days I’ve had in a long time.

My alarm didn’t go off, which means I woke up late, which means I started the day already drowning in panic. Yes, it’s my library and technically I can stroll in at whatever hour I feel like… but I like opening early. It just feels right. And with Lola on maternity leave, mornings are on me.

To make matters worse, the coffee shop where I usually get my fix went out of business last week. Without warning or notice.

Now almost running, as I make my way to the library and find Carlos already by the steps waiting for me. Which is terrifying, because Carlos is never early.

“Hello ma’am,” Carlos chimes with a knowing grin.

“Oh please,” I groan. “You’re early one time.”

He lifts his hands in mock innocence. “I didn’t say anything.”

I roll my eyes and unlock the door.

The library is like a second home. When I was a kid I lived for the quiet, the smell of old paper and afternoons lost in fiction. This is probably why I had no friends. learning to love silence instead of people, books were simply easier.

I started picking up shifts at sixteen and never left. Sadly the owner passed and I was shocked that he left the library to me. After college I knew this is where I wanted to be. My parents never argued. They seemed okay with it and maybe even proud.

I tug on the pendant of my necklace that had pictures of my parents in it as I catch myself thinking of them. They died in a drunk driver accident about a year ago. We had gone out for dinner to celebrate my birthday and a car ran straight past a red light and into us or at least that is what they said.

It is funny how my memory has a completely different version. I have pieces, voices and a flash of a tattoo that does not seem to add up. The doctors blamed the trauma of losing both parents in one night but something still did not feel right.

At night I find myself replaying the whole incident or at least the bits I can remember and I can still hear the words, “Make sure they are dead.” I just shrugged it off as my imagination because why would someone want my parents dead. My dad worked in the bank and my mom was a school teacher.

The bell above the door rings, snapping me back.

One of my recently regular customers walked in, a man I knew simply as Matt. He has been coming almost every day for the past three months, sitting at the same table and never speaking to anyone. At first I got a strange feeling from him but I guess I got used to him in a weird numb kind of way.

“Hello Matt.”

“Hello.”

“Good to see you again.”

“Yes, same here.”

He proceeds to his usual spot where he reads a book he picked from the shelves for the next three hours as usual.

As if on cue, he gets up and surprisingly walks toward my desk.

“Uhm Aria, right?”

“Yes,” I say with an uneasy smile. I am not good with people beyond the basic greetings.

He laughs softly.

“Sorry, I was just wondering if you would like to get coffee with me sometime.”

Was he actually asking me out? I never know what to do in these situations. It is not the first time I have been asked out. Usually I just come up with an excuse not to go, but I did promise myself to go out more…

“Yes, sure, no problem,” I say, trying to sound calm.

“Great. How about tomorrow at eight?”

“Yes, that works.”

He gives me a smile almost predatory, then turns around and leaves. Why on earth did I agree to this? This guy definitely runs me the wrong way.

The rest of the day is pretty slow until closing time arrives. Carlos has left for the day, so when the last patron drifts away with a polite thank you and the bell over the door chimes shut, I lock up and start my ten-minute walk home. It’s my daily exercise since I refuse to step into a gym.

At first, I noticed the street was unusually quiet. I am probably just being paranoid, so I hug my cardigan tight and hurry my steps.

But that is when I hear it.

Footsteps, soft and matching my pace.

I stopped walking.

The footsteps stopped too.

A cold rush zipped down my spine. I swallowed hard and forced myself not to turn around. But I couldn’t help myself.

I took a slow step forward.

The footsteps followed.

This time I spun around fast

No one. The street was empty, dimly lit by the flickering streetlight two houses down. My heartbeat thrummed in my ears.

Something moved at the corner of my eyes and I immediately broke out into a sprint.

The person runs too, catching up to me in seconds.

Before I can scream, a hand clamps over my mouth. I jerk my head back and hit him straight on the nose, probably breaking it.

“Fuck” he grunt loudly before pushing me straight onto the ground. I fall and scrape my hands and knees but I do not feel anything at the moment.

Before I can take off, another pair of hands grabs me. This time the person places a piece of damp cloth over my nose. My body immediately goes slack and the last thing I remember thinking before I pass out is how much of a crappy day this has been.

AriaThe smile disappeared from my face so quickly it almost hurt.Dante didn't take his eyes off me."Are you ever going to stop trying to leave me?"I opened my mouth, but nothing came out.He already knew."I...""You asked Franco to help you disappear."He didn't sound angry. If anything, he sounded tired and hurt.“Have I done something wrong?”I shook my head, hating that he thought this was somehow about what he did."Haven't I made it clear enough that you are mine and your place is beside me?"I swallowed."I wasn't running away from you."The words finally found their way out, but they weren't enough. His jaw tightened."Then explain it to me, Aria. Is being with me so bad that you try to leave at every turn?"He sounded broken, and I hated that."I was trying to help you.""By disappearing?"He let out a humorless laugh."Yes, Dante, because you deserve your family."“Family?”"You, Lucia... your baby."“So that's what this is about,” he replied slowly before closing his ey

  • Under his protection    Chapter 48

DanteThe doctor kept talking, but I heard none of what he had to say.I should be more concerned with what was going on with my child, but my mind remained fixed on the memory of Aria sitting across from me in the library. After being in this world for as long as I have, not many things frighten me, but the look on her face as I walked out the door with Lucia frightened me.Something about it felt wrong.Aria wasn't angry. She wasn't jealous. She wasn't even upset. And somehow that worried me more."Dante?"The doctor's voice pulled me back.I looked up."She and the baby are fine," he repeated.Lucia sat quietly on the examination bed."The pain was most likely caused by exhaustion and stress. Nothing serious."I nodded."Good."The doctor continued speaking."No unnecessary stress.""Regular checkups.""Plenty of rest."I barely listened. The doctor excused himself for a moment."It would be nice if you paid attention to what was going on, you know," Lucia whispered, clearly pissed

  • Under his protection    Chapter 47

AriaAfter dinner that evening, Lucia caught up to me before I could go up to my room."Would you like to take a walk with me?"I almost said no.But she looked hopeful enough that refusing felt cruel. Now we were slowly making our way through the gardens behind the mansion. The weather was pleasant, and the cool night breeze was exactly what I needed. But somehow, I still felt miserable.Lucia rested a hand on her stomach as we walked."The doctor says walking is good for the baby."I nodded."I'm glad you agreed to come with me."I offered a small smile."So am I."For a while, we walked in silence. Then Lucia spoke again."I've started remembering things."My attention immediately shifted to her."You have?"She nodded."Small things, mostly.""Like what?"A soft smile touched her lips."Things before I left. My life, Dante..."She laughed softly but something uncomfortable twisted in my stomach."We were friends first and I remember following him around when we were younger."Her

  • Under his protection    Chapter 46

AriaI woke up to Dante’s arms wrapped around my waist, and a slow smile formed on my lips. I missed this.We must have slept for hours, and a quick glance at the clock confirmed my suspicions. It was past eleven, and we had completely missed breakfast.Dante is never around at this time, and even though I’d love to stay like this for a while longer, Dante probably has other stuff to do.“Hey,” I whispered as I gently tapped Dante. He stirred slightly but didn’t open his eyes.“We need to get up,” I continued, amused at his attempt to pretend like he was asleep.“Shh, it’s the best sleep I’ve had in days,” he replied, holding me tightly.“I’m sure you have something to do.”“No, I don’t.”“Yes, you do.”He groaned but finally loosened his grip.“You are right.” He reached for his phone. “I couldn’t speak to the new Pakhan at the wedding.”“Sofia’s husband?”“Yeah. I should see him this morning. The last thing I need is for the Russians to feel insulted.”Settling his phone back down,

  • Under his protection    Chapter 45

DanteThe second Lucia appeared, I knew everything had gone wrong.Aria followed my gaze and froze. Her face drained of all color.Shit.She shouldn't have to find out like this. Not in a crowded room full of strangers. Not like this. Her eyes dropped to Lucia's stomach. Then to me.Then back to Lucia. As if she was trying to make sense of what she was seeing.I ignored Lucia and turned toward Aria, ready to explain.Ready to say something.Anything.Before I could, a familiar voice interrupted."Ahh, Lucia. You just wandered off."I looked up and, for the first time all evening, my anger outweighed my shock.Riccardo Bellini.Lucia's father. The old man walked toward us wearing a satisfied smile.A smile I immediately wanted to wipe off his face.He stopped beside his daughter and placed a hand on her shoulder."I just wanted to say hello," Lucia replied with a soft smile. After Lucia requested to stay with her father, I granted it immediately.Considering how distant I had been, it

  • Under his protection    Chapter 44

AriaThe morning of Sofia's wedding was anything but exciting. I felt emotionally drained.I stared at my reflection in the full-length mirror as Isabella adjusted the back of my dress. All the bridesmaids looked perfect in the blue fabric Sofia had picked.Everything was beautiful. The flowers. The dresses. The venue. And Sofia—she looked ethereal. But my mind couldn't seem to shake the thought of Lucia and the fact that she was carrying Dante's baby.My mind kept coming up with crazy scenarios of how things would be. It didn't help that Dante was basically not speaking to me.I hadn't seen him since the night I told him I loved him.No calls.Just occasional short replies.Busy.Working.Later.That was all I got.Even if he decided he didn't want to be with me anymore, he owed it to me to say it to my face.“You are doing it again,” Gemma whispered.“What?”“Overthinking everything.”I sighed deeply.“I can't help it.”“He still hasn't mentioned it?” she asked, referring to Dante.

DanteThe basement smelled like blood, sweat, and cigarettes. The walls were fully soundproof, and the lighting was dim, just enough to see. Many have screamed and died in this room, and judging by Franco’s excitement, another person is about to.I didn’t usually get involved with interrogations. DanteI watched my wife as she spoke with Gemma and Lola.My wife. The word felt unfamiliar but not unwelcome. She looked beautiful. Her dress fit so perfectly that it was difficult to take my eyes off her.“It’s okay to stare,” Adriano said beside me. “She is your wife after all.” He didn’t agree

  • Under his protection    Chapter 22

AriaIt’s been five days since the big reveal and I have barely left my new room. The curtains were closed so I couldn’t tell the time of day, nor did I care.A tray of food from the previous day sat barely touched. I didn’t have the energy to read, let alone eat.True to his word, I was moved out

  • Under his protection    Chapter 21

AriaI sat patiently in Dante’s office, my fingers twisting against each other on my lap.Greta had sent me here a couple of minutes ago without any explanation, and that alone was enough to make me nervous. The office felt very much like him. Everything was in place, documents stacked neatly on hi
