Nina's POV

Liam’s grip on my upper arms was unyielding as my small world spiraled out of control because of how close we were standing.

"Nina?" he breathed deeply. He looked just as startled as I was as his deep blue eyes scanned my face, which I knew was all red and puffy from all the crying, coupled with my messed-up hair. "What are you doing out here? Are you—"

"Liam!"

A sharp voice rang out, shattering the little moment we shared.

I flinched as Anya appeared from the exit doors as her eyes locked onto Liam’s hands still resting on my arms, and her expression twisted into pure rage. Wasting no time, she marched over and forcefully shoved my shoulder to break his grip on me, causing me to stumble back.

"What the hell do you think you're doing, Nina?" Anya snapped, her voice dripping with venom as she glared at me like I was evil. "I leave him alone for five minutes, and you're out here trying to throw yourself at my fiancé? Are you seriously trying to seduce him the night before our engagement party? Do you have no dignity over your loose body at all?"

"Anya, stop," Liam growled, stepping between us, as his jaws clenched. "She was falling and I just caught her, what are you talking about?"

"Oh, please! Look at her, Liam!" Anya sneered, gesturing toward me with absolute disgust. "She’s pathetic and she’s been desperate for attention ever since Father announced the wedding, can you not see it? Stay away from him, Nina. You are nothing but an embarrassment to this family, and you will not ruin my life."

With a possessive yank, Anya grabbed Liam’s arm, pulling him tightly against her side as she pulled him away from me. Liam didn't say another word, though his eyes lingered on me for a fraction of a second longer than necessary before Anya dragged him toward their car.

I just stood frozen in my steps as a fresh wave of humiliation washed over me. She had always been mean to me and I thought she couldn't hurt me anymore, but seeing her talk down on me right in front of Liam shattered me in ways I didn’t think were even possible, given my already broken heart.

"Nina! Oh my god, there you are!"

Frida burst through the exit doors, looking around frantically until her eyes landed on me and then, she rushed to my side when she noticed how I was trembling.

"I saw Anya and Liam walking out. Did they see you? Did something happen?"

"Please, Frida," I whispered, my voice breaking as I tried not to burst into tears again. "Just take me home. Please."

Frida didn't ask any more questions as she seemed to understand exactly what had happened. Letting out a sigh, she wrapped her arm around me before guiding me to her car.

That night, I barely got any sleep and even then, morning came too quickly, which simply meant my nightmare was far from over.

The Beckett estate was in full swing, because they were having an official engagement party downstairs since the wedding was the next day and once again, I couldn’t escape it.

I remained locked in my room all day and only got out of bed when I knew it was time. I put on a simple, dark dress, did my best to mask my swollen eyes with heavy concealer, brushed my hair and then, descended the stairs.

The ballroom was crowded with wealthy socialites, who were majority here because of how famous Liam was. As I joined them, I made sure to remain in corners as I actively avoided any contact with my father, Anya, or even worse, Liam as I hoped I would go unnoticed.

Every time I caught a glimpse of Liam looking effortlessly perfect in his tuxedo and my dazzling sister who everyone was fawning over, my heart would ache so violently that I could barely breathe.

To numb the agonizing pain, I did the only thing I could think of. I drank.

I moved from waiter to waiter, swapping empty glasses for full ones while downing the liquid as fast as my body could take it because I wanted to forget everything and soon. I lost count after the fifth glass and my vision soon began to blur.

When I couldn’t seem to stand on my feet without stumbling anymore, I tried to head to my room but then, I staggered towards one of the hallways that was near the back of the estate with my vision barely helping me as my whole body felt numbed.

As I walked aimlessly, my legs soon began to tremble too much so, I leaned against the wall and tried to catch my bearings but then, my knees gave out and within seconds, I fell and passed out completely.

“Arggg,” I groaned as I peeled my eyes open the next morning. As my eyes adjusted to the brightness, I realized I was in an unfamiliar room.

Confused, I tried to move but realized there was a massive weight holding me down. My heart skipped when I looked down and realized a large, muscular arm was wrapped possessively around my waist, pulling my back flush against a broad, bare chest as an expensive cologne flooded my senses, instantly clearing the fog from my brain. I knew this scent. I knew this warmth.

My heartbeat slowly increased as I dared to turn my head but the moment my eyes settled on the person behind me, my eyes widened so much, they almost fell out of their sockets.

Liam.

He was fast asleep with his dark hair messy and his sharp features looking so good, they almost felt unreal as he remained completely naked under the silk sheets we shared.

Panic snapped me out of my thoughts pretty fast as I began to wonder what the hell was going on. How did I end up here?

Before I could even process the horror of the situation, the bedroom doors burst open, making me flinch in fear.

"Oh my god! No!"

A loud scream tore through the room. I snapped my eyes toward the door as terror filled me to see Anya standing by the door with shock on her face and right behind her, was my dad, who looked like he was about to murder me.

Liam's POVAnd I wasn’t going to waste time. I picked up my keys and went right back out to my car. I drove with one hand on the phone dialing Nina’s phone. She didn’t pick up. I tried again and again and got no answer. I called Gideon next. He picked and I spoke as fast as I could. "Find out which hospital has contacted Nina today and send me the location immediately.”I hung up and drove faster, going past the yellow traffic light. Gideon called a few minutes later, and recited the address to me while I typed the information into my car’s GPS system. I drove past a truck that had swerved at the last minute, the traffic light changed and he honked angrily while I focused on my aim. I parked as I got to the hospital entrance and killed the engine, got out and rushed inside, ignoring the cries of the receptionist chasing behind me. My feet hurried down the halls when I received Gideon's message showed clearly on my phone “Arthur is in Ward 10. ICU.”My eyes scanned the room when I a

Liam’s POVI looked at my phone for what seemed like the tenth time in the last ten minutes. It was already glowing in the corner of my desk from my last touch on the screen. And I hadn't gotten any text from Nina. I had sent her a couple, about fifteen. She didn't have my number so I made a long introduction after contemplating for ages on how to sound proper and finally went with whatever came to mind. “Are you there yet? It's Liam by the way before you freak out.”What was I typing?“I finished the stew. It could do with a little bit of salt.”I was lying. The food was perfect but I couldn't tell her that. “Where are you?”My fingers hovered over the sticker, and stopped when I felt it was too much. Tired of waiting I pulled the phone towards me again, checking to see if she had read any of my texts. She hadn't.But then there is Anya. She was the first to always send messages, unwanted pictures. I never asked for a long list of messages with emojis. And she didn't today. For

Liam’s POVThe warmth radiating off my cheeks was due to the way my sweater was twisted, thanks to him having grabbed it before, and now my face was burning up from the heat. Liam stared at me, his breath coming a bit faster than usual for someone standing there relaxed. His lips moved as though he were about to speak, then he stopped himself from speaking, and my weight moved from one foot to another, the thermal bag and remnants of the stew sitting forgotten on his desk.Silence lingered until I heard my phone ringing in my bag. Startled by the noise, I pulled my phone out and saw an unfamiliar number on the screen. Panic rose in my stomach as I quickly answered it. "Hello?""This is Saint Charles, City Hospital." The professional-sounding voice of a woman said over the line. "Am I speaking to Nina Hampton, Arthur Beckett's daughter?""Yes, that is me." I squeezed the phone tighter."Your father was admitted to our hospital thirty minutes ago. He is in critical condition following

  • Unintended Bride    Twenty Two

Liam’s POVI found myself standing by the large window that looked out onto the back garden, swirling an icy glass of white wine despite the time not being past noon yet. The whole sequence of events – her heroic make-believe performance and her sudden show of kindness – kept looping around my head like some horrible song which I couldn’t get away from. She was pampered while I was stuck there, locked up in the oversized cage watching my carefully constructed world disintegrate.I had to strengthen my hold on everything and I would hit from the weak link. I put the glass down and sauntered through the door into the kitchen, swinging my hips a bit. Frank was arranging the fruit on a plate in the middle of the counter as if that were the most important job in the world. I crept towards him, letting the robes hang off one of my shoulders slightly and my voice changing to a honeyed tone. It worked for any man, made them trip over their own feet."Frank," I cooed, tracing my fingers along

Liam’s POVRichard spun to face her with that carefully calculated smile that he had been wearing ever since he walked into my office. I could see the look of recognition in his eyes – the same feeling I had experienced when he walked in. His lips parted open in response, taking a step forward to her. But, I did not let him continue.“Richard,” I spoke up sharply and calmly, my tone carrying a clear distaste for him to pause right where he stood. “We are in the middle of something.” Richard’s eyes glanced over to me, a look of defiance in them. “Actually,” he began, his eyes now fixed on her. “I was about to say how stunning she was at the ball. You make a fine partner, Miss Nina.”Nina’s eyebrows creased slightly as she held the insulated bag. “That was you?”Richard nodded with a soft smile and stretched his hand out for her to take. She took it before I acted and my blood boiled. My lips squeezed into a thin line. “I didn't know you worked here,” Nina started. “I wasn’t. Not unt

Nina’s POVI opened my eyes to find sunlight flooding through my window and weighing down on me like the events of the previous day. My eyes were tired because I had not slept well. Whenever I tried to sleep, all that I heard was the sound of my voice lashing out at Liam. How his face went blank before he stormed off. I had crossed a line even if what I said was true and deserved. Not only did I embarrass him in public but I also had to put up with his silence from it. Dragging myself out of bed, I headed to the bathroom to switch on the shower. The steam started to fill the small cubicle as I let the hot water cascade over my body to ease any tension in my muscles. Before stepping out of the shower to dry myself off, I knew exactly what I had to do. I slipped into a light cream-colored sweater and comfortable jeans and went downstairs. The house was quiet except for the tinkling sound of dishes coming from the kitchen. When I entered the kitchen, I saw Frank arranging fresh flowers
