LOGINNina's POV
Wanna escape?" Frida’s question didn’t even land before I quickly accepted. "Yes," I breathed, the word rushing out of me as my mood felt better instantly. "Yes, Frida, get me out of here." "I am shifting the car into drive so slip out through the side terrace by the gardens. The guards are too busy kissing his billionaire ass to notice you. Move, now!" I shoved the phone into my small purse and hurried to my closet to change into a dress and quickly brushing my hair, before hurrying out of my room with my heart pounding hard against my chest. I didn’t stop until I slipped through the terrace and quickly slipped into Frida’s car, with no one merely noticing. The moment I shut the door, Frida hit the gas and set the car into motion and it was in a matter of seconds before the estate disappeared from behind us. As she drove farther away, I slumped against my seat and covered my face with my hands, as fresh tears sprang to my eyes. Frida kept one hand on the steering wheel and reached over with the other to rub my shoulders in a soothing way. She had known of my love for Liam for the longest time so she knew exactly how I was feeling. "I’ve got you, babes," she said in a calm tone. "I am going to help you feel better, I promise.” It took about twenty minutes before the car finally pulled to a stop and it was no other place but ‘The Vibe,’ which was a high-end club that only those of high status could actually get to enjoy. Under normal circumstances, girls like us would be turned away immediately since we were alone, but Frida was a legal associate for the firm that handled the club's assets and she bypassed the massive queue entirely by flashing a digital security pass to the bouncer, who immediately moved to the side and granted us access. The moment we got inside, we were immediately swallowed by the loud music and swarm of sweaty bodies that were having fun on the dance floor. Moving through the bodies, Frida dragged me straight to the bar while shouting to get the bartender's attention due to the loud music. "Two double shots of tequila! Now!" A while later, the bartender presented our drinks and I didn't hesitate before grabbing my glass and chugging its contents down. I winced as the harsh liquid burned down my throat but I didn’t back down, I needed this. "Another!" I yelled, pushing the now empty glass towards him. "That’s my girl," Frida shouted back, ordering a round of martinis to follow. Four drinks in and my vision was beginning to get hazy as I slowly began to relax. I forgot about Liam and the wedding as I moved my head to the music and simply enjoyed myself. Feeling good, I turned my stool around and leaned my elbows against the bar to survey the dancing crowd as I contemplated going to dance. As I watched the dancers, my eyes drifted upwards towards the VIP section and when they settled on a figure, I froze. Sitting quietly in one of the VIP sections was no other person, but Liam. He looked devastatingly handsome, wearing a crisp white shirt with the top two buttons undone, with his hair looking messy and stunning at the same time as I watched him take a sip of his drink. My heart ground painfully as I couldn’t believe he was only a few walks away. I had spent so long running and hiding away from him but now, with the alcohol in my veins, I began to wonder ‘what if I just go up there?’ ‘What if I walk up to him, look him in the eye, and tell him that I’ve loved him for a whole year? What do I have to lose when he’s already gone in two days?’ Feeling a sudden burst of courage, I got off my stool and took a deep breath before turning towards the VIP section, but before I could take a step, I saw a figure walk towards him and I froze immediately. It was Anya. She wore a backless, silver dress that caught every single eye in the room as she catwalked over to him and straddled his lap, wrapping her legs on either side of him before wrapping her arms around him. Liam didn't pull away but instead, his large hands pulled her in. I watched in horror as Anya leaned in and kissed him passionately, making my little hope shatter completely. As I watched them, a bitter taste filled my mouth by how perfect they looked. I was nothing like Anya, that was why he chose her. I was always pushed to the side. Unable to bear the sight anymore, I turned around and ignored Frida’s concerned gaze, before bolting for the restroom so I couldn’t break down in front of everyone. The moment I burst into the restroom, I rushed to a stall and collapsed over the toilet, before retching and vomiting hard until there was nothing left in me. And only then did I slide down against the wall tiredly. Burying my face in my knees, I cried heartbreakingly until my ribs ached and even then, I didn’t stop. I cried for the year I spent wasting my love on a fantasy, I cried for my mother, who wasn't here to hold me, and for my father, who wished I didn't exist. I cried till there was nothing left in me and then, I realized coming here was a mistake. I should have known they had plans of coming here. “I can't be here,” I breathed as I pushed myself off the floor, walked to the sink and splashed water over my face to wash away the tears and the vomit. When I was done, I walked out of the restroom but I felt guilty for ruining the night for Frida because she only wanted to help. Choosing to leave without bothering her, I slipped through bodies and headed for the exit because I didn’t want to ruin her night. When I stepped outside, I took a deep breath to clear my head as I took a step forward but then, I collided with a hard chest that knocked me off balance immediately, making me lose my footing. "Whoa," a deep voice rumbled as strong hands reached out to hold me, before I could fall to the ground. The touch sent a jolt of electricity straight up my spine as a strangely familiar scent filled my nose. Gasping, my head snapped up but I regretted it immediately. Liam.Liam's POVAnd I wasn’t going to waste time. I picked up my keys and went right back out to my car. I drove with one hand on the phone dialing Nina’s phone. She didn’t pick up. I tried again and again and got no answer. I called Gideon next. He picked and I spoke as fast as I could. "Find out which hospital has contacted Nina today and send me the location immediately.”I hung up and drove faster, going past the yellow traffic light. Gideon called a few minutes later, and recited the address to me while I typed the information into my car’s GPS system. I drove past a truck that had swerved at the last minute, the traffic light changed and he honked angrily while I focused on my aim. I parked as I got to the hospital entrance and killed the engine, got out and rushed inside, ignoring the cries of the receptionist chasing behind me. My feet hurried down the halls when I received Gideon's message showed clearly on my phone “Arthur is in Ward 10. ICU.”My eyes scanned the room when I a
Liam’s POVI looked at my phone for what seemed like the tenth time in the last ten minutes. It was already glowing in the corner of my desk from my last touch on the screen. And I hadn't gotten any text from Nina. I had sent her a couple, about fifteen. She didn't have my number so I made a long introduction after contemplating for ages on how to sound proper and finally went with whatever came to mind. “Are you there yet? It's Liam by the way before you freak out.”What was I typing?“I finished the stew. It could do with a little bit of salt.”I was lying. The food was perfect but I couldn't tell her that. “Where are you?”My fingers hovered over the sticker, and stopped when I felt it was too much. Tired of waiting I pulled the phone towards me again, checking to see if she had read any of my texts. She hadn't.But then there is Anya. She was the first to always send messages, unwanted pictures. I never asked for a long list of messages with emojis. And she didn't today. For
Liam’s POVThe warmth radiating off my cheeks was due to the way my sweater was twisted, thanks to him having grabbed it before, and now my face was burning up from the heat. Liam stared at me, his breath coming a bit faster than usual for someone standing there relaxed. His lips moved as though he were about to speak, then he stopped himself from speaking, and my weight moved from one foot to another, the thermal bag and remnants of the stew sitting forgotten on his desk.Silence lingered until I heard my phone ringing in my bag. Startled by the noise, I pulled my phone out and saw an unfamiliar number on the screen. Panic rose in my stomach as I quickly answered it. "Hello?""This is Saint Charles, City Hospital." The professional-sounding voice of a woman said over the line. "Am I speaking to Nina Hampton, Arthur Beckett's daughter?""Yes, that is me." I squeezed the phone tighter."Your father was admitted to our hospital thirty minutes ago. He is in critical condition following
Liam’s POVI found myself standing by the large window that looked out onto the back garden, swirling an icy glass of white wine despite the time not being past noon yet. The whole sequence of events – her heroic make-believe performance and her sudden show of kindness – kept looping around my head like some horrible song which I couldn’t get away from. She was pampered while I was stuck there, locked up in the oversized cage watching my carefully constructed world disintegrate.I had to strengthen my hold on everything and I would hit from the weak link. I put the glass down and sauntered through the door into the kitchen, swinging my hips a bit. Frank was arranging the fruit on a plate in the middle of the counter as if that were the most important job in the world. I crept towards him, letting the robes hang off one of my shoulders slightly and my voice changing to a honeyed tone. It worked for any man, made them trip over their own feet."Frank," I cooed, tracing my fingers along
Liam’s POVRichard spun to face her with that carefully calculated smile that he had been wearing ever since he walked into my office. I could see the look of recognition in his eyes – the same feeling I had experienced when he walked in. His lips parted open in response, taking a step forward to her. But, I did not let him continue.“Richard,” I spoke up sharply and calmly, my tone carrying a clear distaste for him to pause right where he stood. “We are in the middle of something.” Richard’s eyes glanced over to me, a look of defiance in them. “Actually,” he began, his eyes now fixed on her. “I was about to say how stunning she was at the ball. You make a fine partner, Miss Nina.”Nina’s eyebrows creased slightly as she held the insulated bag. “That was you?”Richard nodded with a soft smile and stretched his hand out for her to take. She took it before I acted and my blood boiled. My lips squeezed into a thin line. “I didn't know you worked here,” Nina started. “I wasn’t. Not unt
Nina’s POVI opened my eyes to find sunlight flooding through my window and weighing down on me like the events of the previous day. My eyes were tired because I had not slept well. Whenever I tried to sleep, all that I heard was the sound of my voice lashing out at Liam. How his face went blank before he stormed off. I had crossed a line even if what I said was true and deserved. Not only did I embarrass him in public but I also had to put up with his silence from it. Dragging myself out of bed, I headed to the bathroom to switch on the shower. The steam started to fill the small cubicle as I let the hot water cascade over my body to ease any tension in my muscles. Before stepping out of the shower to dry myself off, I knew exactly what I had to do. I slipped into a light cream-colored sweater and comfortable jeans and went downstairs. The house was quiet except for the tinkling sound of dishes coming from the kitchen. When I entered the kitchen, I saw Frank arranging fresh flowers
Liam's POVI shoved the door to my room open and stepped inside, my blood still boiling. The whole day had gone to shit after I saw Nina limp back into the house with those shopping bags. Who did she think she was, sneaking out without a word? I yanked my tie loose and threw it on the floor. My sui
Nina's POV The doorbell rang later. Frank opened it. I stood next to him. Frida burst through with both arms raised high and ran straight at me. “Hi, girlie. I missed you! I was thinking you wouldn’t call even though it was so soon after your wedding but it was worth it.”“I missed you too.” I wra
Nina's POV My head hit the floor. The room blurred. Loud ringing filled my ears. When the blur cleared Anya dragged me upward by the arm. The second my left foot touched down, and an instant pain tore through it. I bent forward.“Stop your foolish whining and go make me some food or God help you L
Nina’s POV“Oh, Liam…” I whimpered as a tear rolled down my cheeks. I was holding a stolen photo I had taken months ago in my trembling hands as I stared out of the window. He was looking away from the camera with his perfect jawline accentuated by the dim lighting, as a smile tugged on those perfe
