Nina’s POV

“Oh, Liam…” I whimpered as a tear rolled down my cheeks. I was holding a stolen photo I had taken months ago in my trembling hands as I stared out of the window.

He was looking away from the camera with his perfect jawline accentuated by the dim lighting, as a smile tugged on those perfect lips. Liam was the city’s most favored billionaire bachelor, a man who commanded entire boardrooms with just a single glance and for the past year, I had secretly, hopelessly loved him from afar.

Every time he visited our estate to discuss shipping matters with my father, my heart would flutter helplessly and I had spent twelve months building a fantasy in my head, imagining the day I would finally gather the courage to tell him how I felt.

But that fantasy shattered because a few days ago, when he came to our estate once again, he wasn’t coming for business but this time, he came for my sister, Anya. Apparently, they had been seeing each other for quite some time and I had no idea.

"Nina! Get down here this instant!"

My father’s cold voice called from the hallway, snapping me out of my thoughts. With a shaky breath, I shoved the photograph beneath my mattress and quickly wiped my tears before hurrying down the hallway.

When I entered the living room, the tension was thick enough to suffocate as my father, Arthur Beckett, stood by the fireplace, looking commanding and proud as always as his cold eyes ran over me. By his right, Anya sat on a sofa, wearing a flawless dress and looking every bit the stunning princess she had always been.

"Sit," Arthur commanded coldly as he motioned to the vacant seat by his left.

Sensing trouble, I swallowed hard and quietly sat down before looking back at him. "What is this about, Father?"

Arthur cleared his throat as he met eyes with Anya, like they already had a little agreement which I wasn’t aware of. His gaze softened on her but when he turned to look at me, that soft look was completely gone and replaced by the cold look he always reserved for me.

“We are finalizing the timeline. The merger or rather, the wedding between Anya and Liam is officially happening in two days and the media coverage is already secured."

Two days.

My heart squeezed painfully as I tried not to let my emotions show. I thought I still had enough time to soothe my pain but two days was only a few hours away. Swallowing hard, I turned to look at Anya, who was practically glowing with excitement.

"Two days?" I whispered, my voice cracking, despite my effort not to let anything out. "Why the sudden rush?"

Arthur's eyes snapped to me, hardening instantly. "The timeline is none of your business, Nina. Your only concern is fulfilling your duty to this family, though god knows you rarely do. You will be Anya's maid of honor."

I felt the air leave my lungs as my eyes widened. "What? No, please. Let one of her friends do it because I can't—"

"You will do it," Arthur snarled as he stepped forward and towered over me possessively. "Just look at yourself. You are pale, disheveled, entirely plain and not appealing to look at. Anya is marrying into the most powerful family in the city, elevating the Beckett name to heights you could never dream of achieving and what have you ever done for the family except rotting away in your room? You are nothing compared to your sister, Nina. The least you can do is stand at the altar, hold her dress diligently, and try not to embarrass me for once in your miserable life."

I let out a shaky breath as I turned to look at Anya, who wasn’t going to defend me as usual. Father always looked for ways to talk down on me but Anya never sided with me, nobody ever did. Anya simply leaned back and checked her perfectly manicured fingers, completely indifferent to what was going on.

“Father, please—"

"That’s all, get out of my sight," my father dismissed, turning his back to me. "The caterers will be here soon, and I don't want your depressing face ruining the atmosphere."

I wasn’t just heartbroken, I was going to watch them get married.

Wasting no time, I stood up, my legs shaking so violently I could barely support my own weight, and practically ran back up the stairs. I slammed my bedroom door shut and locked the door before sliding down the door as a fresh wave of sobs left me. Anya was always compared to me and no matter how hard I tried, I could never please my family. Anya was the perfect daughter who always looked for ways to take whatever brought me any form of joy. I felt so small, so utterly worthless as I curled into a ball and sobbed quietly.

Bzzzz.

The sudden vibration of my phone on the nightstand startled me. Wiping my eyes, I walked over to the nightstand to see the call was from Frida, my best friend.

"Frida?" I answered, trying to sound better.

"Nina, oh my god, thank goodness you answered," Frida answered. "Listen to me. I’m parked right outside your gates and I know you're going through hell with the wedding news, so I came to break you out of that prison."

A weak smile touched my lips at her effort to make me feel better. "Frida, I don't think I can leave. My dad just—"

"No, Nina, shut up and listen to me for a second," Frida interrupted, as her voice dropped low like she was trying not to be heard by someone else. "I was just about to honk, but a black Rolls-Royce just pulled up at your house and the security guards at your gate are literally bowing."

My breath hitched. "What?"

No, it cannot be Liam. I have been avoiding any form of contact with him since I got news of their wedding.

“Wanna escape?”

Liam's POVAnd I wasn’t going to waste time. I picked up my keys and went right back out to my car. I drove with one hand on the phone dialing Nina’s phone. She didn’t pick up. I tried again and again and got no answer. I called Gideon next. He picked and I spoke as fast as I could. "Find out which hospital has contacted Nina today and send me the location immediately.”I hung up and drove faster, going past the yellow traffic light. Gideon called a few minutes later, and recited the address to me while I typed the information into my car’s GPS system. I drove past a truck that had swerved at the last minute, the traffic light changed and he honked angrily while I focused on my aim. I parked as I got to the hospital entrance and killed the engine, got out and rushed inside, ignoring the cries of the receptionist chasing behind me. My feet hurried down the halls when I received Gideon's message showed clearly on my phone “Arthur is in Ward 10. ICU.”My eyes scanned the room when I a

Liam’s POVI looked at my phone for what seemed like the tenth time in the last ten minutes. It was already glowing in the corner of my desk from my last touch on the screen. And I hadn't gotten any text from Nina. I had sent her a couple, about fifteen. She didn't have my number so I made a long introduction after contemplating for ages on how to sound proper and finally went with whatever came to mind. “Are you there yet? It's Liam by the way before you freak out.”What was I typing?“I finished the stew. It could do with a little bit of salt.”I was lying. The food was perfect but I couldn't tell her that. “Where are you?”My fingers hovered over the sticker, and stopped when I felt it was too much. Tired of waiting I pulled the phone towards me again, checking to see if she had read any of my texts. She hadn't.But then there is Anya. She was the first to always send messages, unwanted pictures. I never asked for a long list of messages with emojis. And she didn't today. For

Liam’s POVThe warmth radiating off my cheeks was due to the way my sweater was twisted, thanks to him having grabbed it before, and now my face was burning up from the heat. Liam stared at me, his breath coming a bit faster than usual for someone standing there relaxed. His lips moved as though he were about to speak, then he stopped himself from speaking, and my weight moved from one foot to another, the thermal bag and remnants of the stew sitting forgotten on his desk.Silence lingered until I heard my phone ringing in my bag. Startled by the noise, I pulled my phone out and saw an unfamiliar number on the screen. Panic rose in my stomach as I quickly answered it. "Hello?""This is Saint Charles, City Hospital." The professional-sounding voice of a woman said over the line. "Am I speaking to Nina Hampton, Arthur Beckett's daughter?""Yes, that is me." I squeezed the phone tighter."Your father was admitted to our hospital thirty minutes ago. He is in critical condition following

Liam’s POVI found myself standing by the large window that looked out onto the back garden, swirling an icy glass of white wine despite the time not being past noon yet. The whole sequence of events – her heroic make-believe performance and her sudden show of kindness – kept looping around my head like some horrible song which I couldn’t get away from. She was pampered while I was stuck there, locked up in the oversized cage watching my carefully constructed world disintegrate.I had to strengthen my hold on everything and I would hit from the weak link. I put the glass down and sauntered through the door into the kitchen, swinging my hips a bit. Frank was arranging the fruit on a plate in the middle of the counter as if that were the most important job in the world. I crept towards him, letting the robes hang off one of my shoulders slightly and my voice changing to a honeyed tone. It worked for any man, made them trip over their own feet."Frank," I cooed, tracing my fingers along

Liam’s POVRichard spun to face her with that carefully calculated smile that he had been wearing ever since he walked into my office. I could see the look of recognition in his eyes – the same feeling I had experienced when he walked in. His lips parted open in response, taking a step forward to her. But, I did not let him continue.“Richard,” I spoke up sharply and calmly, my tone carrying a clear distaste for him to pause right where he stood. “We are in the middle of something.” Richard’s eyes glanced over to me, a look of defiance in them. “Actually,” he began, his eyes now fixed on her. “I was about to say how stunning she was at the ball. You make a fine partner, Miss Nina.”Nina’s eyebrows creased slightly as she held the insulated bag. “That was you?”Richard nodded with a soft smile and stretched his hand out for her to take. She took it before I acted and my blood boiled. My lips squeezed into a thin line. “I didn't know you worked here,” Nina started. “I wasn’t. Not unt

Nina’s POVI opened my eyes to find sunlight flooding through my window and weighing down on me like the events of the previous day. My eyes were tired because I had not slept well. Whenever I tried to sleep, all that I heard was the sound of my voice lashing out at Liam. How his face went blank before he stormed off. I had crossed a line even if what I said was true and deserved. Not only did I embarrass him in public but I also had to put up with his silence from it. Dragging myself out of bed, I headed to the bathroom to switch on the shower. The steam started to fill the small cubicle as I let the hot water cascade over my body to ease any tension in my muscles. Before stepping out of the shower to dry myself off, I knew exactly what I had to do. I slipped into a light cream-colored sweater and comfortable jeans and went downstairs. The house was quiet except for the tinkling sound of dishes coming from the kitchen. When I entered the kitchen, I saw Frank arranging fresh flowers
