Chapter 1

Author: Year on Year
I sat in the study and read the divorce agreement from beginning to end one more time.

Everything was written clearly in black and white.

In the property division section, I asked for nothing.

The house he had owned before marriage would remain his. The car would remain his. His company shares had nothing to do with me.

All I needed to take was my own savings.

I signed my name on the agreement.

Natalie Ramsey.

Three years ago, I had still believed that even though this marriage began as a transaction, maybe we could still make something decent out of it.

I was so stupid back then.

I put the agreement into a folder and placed it on the coffee table.

Then I took out my phone and opened our chat.

"Come home earlier today. I have something to discuss with you."

About two minutes later, one word appeared beside his profile picture.

"Okay."

I turned off my phone and tossed it onto the couch.

Then I went to the kitchen to pour myself a glass of water.

The kitchen was huge, with a double-door refrigerator, a built-in oven, and German imported cookware, all arranged neatly in its place.

But I rarely used it.

When we had just gotten married, I tried cooking a few times, thinking he might like to come home to a hot meal.

The first time, I made braised ribs. He tasted one bite and said it was fine.

Then he took a phone call and left, saying something had happened with Rosalie.

The second time, I made fish stew. He did not come home at all.

The third time, I cooked an entire table of food, working from four in the afternoon until seven at night.

He did come home that time.

But Rosalie was behind him.

The two of them walked in laughing and talking. When he saw the table full of dishes, he froze for a second, then said, "We already have plans. We're going out to eat."

Rosalie stood behind him, tilted her head, and smiled at me.

"You worked so hard."

Even now, remembering that smile still makes my stomach turn sour.

After that, I never cooked again.

At seven that evening, he did not come home.

At eight, he still was not home.

At nine, my phone rang.

I picked it up and saw a message from him.

"Something came up with Rosalie. I'll be home late. Go to bed first. Don't wait for me."

I stared at that message for a long time.

Go to bed first. Don't wait for me.

I had heard that sentence for three years.

Every time, it was like this. Every time, it was Rosalie.

There was always something going on with her. He always had to deal with it.

When she had a cold, he had to keep her company. When she was upset, he had to keep her company. When she moved, he had to help. Even when she adopted a cat, he had to be there.

Once, Rosalie said she wanted cake from a bakery across town. He drove forty minutes to buy it, delivered it to her apartment, and waited until she finished eating before coming home.

By then, it was already one in the morning.

I asked him, "Did you eat dinner?"

He said, "I ate at Rosalie's."

Then he showered and went into the study.

I should have understood everything that day.

But I did not.

I kept thinking that since we were married, we should give each other time.

Maybe after enough days passed, he would realize I was not that bad.

Maybe if I did well enough, he would be willing to turn around and look at this home.

Now that I think about it, if someone has no place for you in his heart, it does not matter how well you do.

He will not fall in love with you because you are good.

He will only think your goodness has nothing to do with him.

I did not reply to his message.

Before, I would always reply with okay, to show him that I understood.

Sometimes I would add, "Be careful," as if that made me generous and sensible.

But today, I did not want to reply.

In a few days, I would not receive his messages anymore anyway.

I stood at the building entrance and turned to look at him.He was soaked through. His hair clung to his forehead, his shirt stuck tightly to his body, and his lips were a little purple from the cold. But he was still smiling. That cautious, ingratiating smile."Adrian, what exactly do you want?""I want to take you to dinner."Just one dinner."After we eat, I'll leave. I won't bother you anymore."I stared at him for a long time."Will you keep your word?""I will."I was silent for a while, then sighed."Fine. Just one dinner."His eyes lit up. In that instant, he looked as if he had received the greatest gift in the world."Okay! What do you want to eat? I know a place nearby-""Anything. You choose."He chose a quiet Japanese restaurant nearby. The lighting was warm, and the private room held only the two of us.He sat across from me, his eyes never leaving my face."You've gotten thinner," he said."I haven't.""You have. Your face used to be a little fuller.

When I walked out of the coffee shop, I heard the chair scrape behind me.He chased after me."Natalie!"I did not turn back and quickened my pace.He caught up and blocked my way."You're right," he said, panting. "I really am not used to losing you. But that's not the point.""The point is that I realized the stupidest thing I've ever done was not marrying you. It was failing to cherish you."Rosalie was my first love. I once thought I loved her. But after three years with you, I finally know the person I like is you."I like seeing you busy in the kitchen when I come home. I got used to you organizing my walk-in closet. I got used to the living room light you left on."Rosalie can't do any of those things, not because she doesn't know how, but because she isn't you."I looked at him and suddenly felt tired."Adrian, have you ever thought about what those habits meant to me?"He said nothing."They meant three years of loneliness. Three years of waiting. Three years of c

I took a deep breath, then used my other hand to take out my phone and press three numbers in front of him.9-1-1.When he saw the numbers on the screen, his fingers slowly loosened.I shut the door in his face. After closing it, I leaned against the door, my heart pounding.Outside, everything was quiet for a long time. Then I heard a very soft sigh. The footsteps gradually faded.I walked to the window and lifted one corner of the curtain.Adrian stood by the flower bed downstairs, looking up at my window. He stood there for a long time, probably ten minutes or more. Then he took a pack of cigarettes from his pocket, pulled one out, and lit it.Smoke drifted through the morning light. His figure looked especially lonely. Finally, he put out the cigarette and turned away. His back looked bleak, as if he had been abandoned.I drew the curtains and went back to bed.But I could not fall asleep.I thought that after that day, Adrian would finally stop. But I underestimat

I held the phone and stayed silent for a long time."Adrian," I said calmly, "do you know how ridiculous you sound right now?""I know.""On our wedding night, you told me you would never love me in this life. You told me to behave as Mrs. Whitmore and not to expect you to touch me."For three years, you spent every holiday with Rosalie. When I had a fever of 103 degrees, you stood at the bedroom door, glanced at me, and left. I cooked an entire table of food waiting for you to come home, and you brought her back and said you were going out to eat."Do you know what day that was?""What?""It was our wedding anniversary."The other end of the line was silent for a long time.I heard his breathing turn heavy, as if he was suppressing something."Natalie...""Don't say my name."I cut him off."You were right back then. This marriage was a fair trade. Now everything is done, and we can go our separate ways. You're married now. Rosalie is the woman you chose. Live your life p

After sending that message, I placed my phone face down on the coffee table and continued watching my movie. But Adrian's messages became more and more frequent.Sometimes he sent them late at night. Sometimes at dawn.Their contents also grew stranger."I worked late today. When I got home, I instinctively wanted to say, 'I'm back,' but there was no one at home.""When you were there, the living room light was always on.""I passed that bakery today and remembered that you seemed to like sweets too."After putting up with it for a few days, I finally replied."Adrian, you're married now. If you have something to say, say it to your wife."The other side was silent for a full day. Then he sent a long message."Natalie, I don't know what's wrong with me."After marrying Rosalie, I keep feeling like something is off."I started noticing things I had never noticed before."For example, every night, you left a light on in the living room and turned it off only after I came ho

  • Vacant by Choice   Chapter 9

I stared at the invitation for several seconds. Then I laughed. That was fast.We had only been divorced half a month, and the invitations were already printed. It seemed they had prepared everything long ago, waiting only for me, the obstacle, to move out of the way.I turned the invitation over and saw a small line printed on the back."Witness our love and share in our happiness."Love.Happiness.Coming from Adrian Whitmore, those words sounded ironic no matter how I looked at them.I placed the invitation on the coffee table and leaned back on the couch, thinking for a long time.Should I go?Logically, I should. If I did not go, it would look like I could not let go. If I went, it would make me seem generous. But truthfully, I had no interest in their wedding at all.I picked up my phone and sent Adrian a message."I received the invitation. Congratulations."This time, he replied quickly."Will you come?""Not sure. Depends on my schedule."The typing indicat
