Merilyn was just out of the elevator. She looked around the ground floor and regrets filled her eyes. Her carelessness has caught up with her. Her career is gone. What was she going to tell her mother now? She walked forward, thinking.

Her mother had wanted this career for her. She had worked hard to see her daughter out of college and now that she succeeded. The career ended on her first day.

Her thoughts spiral and just as she was about to walk out. A voice called her.

The person's voice was so loud that it caused everyone on the ground floor to look up. But the young woman didn't care. She just stepped forward to Merilyn.

“First of all. My name is Kate Brown. I am also new here. And I am sorry that happened. But you have to go back. I think your work is not over yet.”

“What?..... what are you saying?” Merilyn asked, stunned. She laughed a little, not understanding anything. She held Kate's hands.

Kate kept laughing. “Yes, it's true. You should come with me.

When Merilyn returned to the department with Kate. The hall was already in chaos. Different groups talk as if there was going to be a big problem. Well, there would, since the CEO made it clear to the head of department.

“You foolish girl.” Sandra spoke immediately Merilyn walked inside. “You want to get me sacked? Who permitted you to leave?” She scolded her.

“I think you should leave that scolding for later. I need to present her to Madison right away.”

There was silence in the hall again. Kate was the only one smiling. She was so happy for Merilyn. But Merilyn was not that excited. Yes, she is that her job has not ended. But she still doesn't understand what is happening. So she asked.

“Ma'am, please, I don't understand all this?”

Now she got the two women's attention. Claire faced her and spoke. “You have been promoted to work directly under the CEO with immediate effects. And listen very carefully, young woman.” Claire stepped right into her space. Their noses are almost touching. “If you don't report to the CEO's secretary right now. It could get everyone fired immediately. Now, do you understand it?”

“What? No.” Merilyn found herself saying. And she stepped back from Clair.

“What did you say?”

Some think that she is crazy. Definitely crazy.

“I mean,” she quickly rephrased her statement. “I didn't expect it to happen this way. I am not qualified. I mean, there must be a mistake or something.”

“At least she knows that.” A young woman, one of those that hated her from the moment she walked inside said,

“Sandra stepped forward. “I don't know about qualifications. But if the boss said you're qualified. Then you are qualified. Now get your ass moving before you cause us more trouble.”

Claire held her hand and dragged her away. Leaving the hall in another round of chaos.

As they reached the CEO's suite. Madison rose to her feet immediately she saw them. “You can go back, Claire. Thank you.” She dismissed Claire immediately.

Merilyn was stunned. She wondered how powerful this Madison woman would be. Considering the way she just spoke to someone like Claire. But she didn't say a word.

Madison walked around her, accessing her. She wondered why the CEO would suddenly ask that someone like this clumsy girl be promoted. It amused her considering the fact that her boss is not interested in women and certainly not a worthy staff to talk of a girl like Merilyn.

Merilyn didn't understand the reason Madison was looking at her the way she did. But she knows better not to complain. Besides, that was not her problem. Her problem was that, if this is a punishment of what she had done? She didn't see any good reasons why the CEO would promote her.

She came to a conclusion that he recognised her and wanted to punish her by humiliating her. Whatever happened in the past was a mistake and it wasn't supposed to happen in the first place. She made up her mind to keep pretending that she doesn't remember him. And it will stay that way. Especially now that she will be working directly under him.

“Follow me.” Madison Interrupted her thoughts.

She hesitated and Madison turned back and looked at her. “You don't need to be scared. This place will be your office from now on. We just arranged it as directed by Mr. Stewart. But before you start. He wants to see you. So, follow me.”

Merilyn let out a deep breath. Whatever the matter might be, she was going to face it. So, she followed the secretary inside the CEO's opulent grandeur of an office.

Immediately they stepped inside. Merilyn felt her heart caught. Madison held her hand and led her forward. And when they reached the CEO's desk. She let go

“Mr. Stewart. I have brought the new girl as you have instructed.”

“Leave us.” He cut in immediately, without looking up at them.

Madison knew better not to question him. She left immediately, closing the door behind her with a soft click.

Merilyn fidgeted. She doesn't know what to do next. Was she supposed to say something? Ah, yes. The hot coffee incident.

“I am sorry once again about the coffee. Please, accept my apology.” Her voice betrayed her apologies because it wasn't steady.

First of all, he looked up at her. Their eyes met. Then he stood up slowly and walked away from his seat, his eyes never leaving hers. He stepped forward until he was towering over her. Merilyn swallowed. Her body was shaking now. His cologne filled her nose and it was hard to breathe.

Then when he realised that she remembered, but was just pretending. He smirked and stepped backwards a little. Now, he was leaning against his office desk. He crossed his arms against his chest, revealing the veins on his forearms.

Merilyn shamelessly watched the flexing of his muscles. He caught her staring. But pretended not to. But his next words caught her off guard.

“Tell me something…. Do you normally pay men after sleeping with them, or was I a special case?”

Merilyn's eyes widened in shock and she began to cough immediately.

  • WRONG ROOM    Chapter Forty

Marilyn woke up to the persistent ringing of her apartment doorbell. The sound refused to stop. At first, she tried ignoring it. She pulled the blanket over her head and buried her face deeper into the pillow, hoping whoever was outside would eventually give up. But they didn’t. The bell rang again, and again, and again. With a frustrated groan, Marilyn sat upright in bed. Her head felt heavy, between her mother’s surgery, Raymond’s proposal, and the countless thoughts keeping her awake half the night, she had barely gotten any sleep. The bell rang again. “Coming!” She pushed herself off the bed. She was still wearing the black lounge pants and cream tank top she had slept in. Her red hair was a tangled mess around her shoulders as she walked barefoot out of her bedroom. Halfway through the living room, she paused. The apartment looked exactly how she felt. Exhausted. A coffee mug sat forgotten on the center table. A throw blanket hung off the couch. Magazines were scattered acr

The city lights blurred past the tinted windows of Raymond's car as it moved smoothly through the evening traffic. Lawrence drove without saying a word, giving the two people in the backseat complete privacy. Marilyn sat beside Raymond, staring at her left hand, at the ring. She had been staring at it ever since he slipped it onto her finger. It wasn't overly flashy, in fact, compared to the kind of jewelry billionaires usually bought, it looked surprisingly simple. Elegant. Timeless. And somehow, that made it worse. Because it didn't look like a joke. It looked real. Everything about today felt unreal. Her mother’s surgery, and Madison creating chaos. With the hospital believing Raymond was her fiancé. And then Raymond calmly proposed marriage as if he were discussing tomorrow's weather. Marilyn closed her eyes briefly. Her entire life had changed in less than forty-eight hours. She didn't even know how to process it. Beside her, Raymond sat quietly, his attention focused on th

The VIP lounge gradually became quieter as the evening stretched deeper into the night. After hearing that Elizabeth's surgery had gone well, Naomi and Sia finally relax. The tension that had followed them for hours slowly eased from their shoulders. They remained with Marilyn for another hour, talking about random things and trying their best to distract her, but exhaustion eventually caught up with all of them. "You're not leaving this hospital tonight, are you?" Naomi asked for what felt like the tenth time. Marilyn shook her head. "I didn't think so," Naomi sighed. Sia stood and stretched her arms above her head. "At least try to sleep a little." "I will." "That's a lie." "It is." The three women laughed softly. For the first time all day, the sound didn't feel forced. Naomi stepped forward and wrapped her arms around Marilyn. "Your mom is strong. She'll be okay." Sia joined the hug a second later. "Call us if you need anything. Even if it's three in the morning." Mari

  • WRONG ROOM    Chapter Thirty-Seven

Silence filled the VIP lounge at Mediterranean Hospital. Marilyn sat on the edge of one of the cream-colored sofas with both hands clasped tightly together. Naomi sat on her right, Sia on her left, and Madison occupied the single armchair near the window with her tablet resting on her lap. The room was beautiful in a way that felt almost insulting to Marilyn’s fear. Soft lighting, expensive furniture, fresh flowers on a glass table, and a private coffee station in one corner. Everything looked calm, elegant, and controlled. But nothing inside Marilyn felt calm. Her mother had been in surgery for some hours now. At first, no one said much. Naomi held her hand. Sia kept rubbing her back. Madison took calls quietly and stepped out twice to speak with hospital staff. Every time the lounge door opened, Marilyn’s heart stopped. Every time it was not the doctor, she felt herself sink deeper into fear. By the fourth hour, the silence became too heavy to bear. Naomi finally leane

  • WRONG ROOM    Chapter Thirty-Six:

Marilyn still couldn't believe that she had wasted her time coming here. She had hoped time would have changed him. Maturity. Success. Life experience. Something. Apparently not. Simon Hayes was still the same selfish, arrogant man she had left behind. The only difference now was that he wore expensive suits and sat behind a bigger desk. Simon leaned casually against his desk, already imagining victory. His eyes traveled over her body without shame. “So?” he asked. “What's it going to be?” Marilyn slowly turned to look at him. A smug smile spread across his face. “If you say yes, the money is yours tonight.” For a brief moment, Marilyn smiled too. The sight seemed to encourage him. Then she spoke. “Go fuck yourself.” The smile vanished from Simon's face instantly. Marilyn had never felt more satisfied. “You know,” she continued calmly, “I almost convinced myself that maybe you had changed.” Simon frowned. “But I can see now that you're still the same pathetic idiot you were

  • WRONG ROOM    Chapter Thirty-Five

The following day changed nothing. Marilyn sat in the hospital lounge between Naomi and Sia, staring blankly at the disposable cup of coffee in her hands. The drink had long gone cold, but she barely noticed. Her thoughts were consumed by hospital bills, surgery costs, and the terrifying possibility of losing the only family she had left. The last twenty-four hours had been a nightmare. Every time she looked through the glass walls toward the VIP suite where her mother rested, a fresh wave of fear washed over her. Elizabeth Oxford had always been strong. She had worked tirelessly to raise Marilyn alone, sacrificing everything she had so her daughter could have opportunities she never did. Seeing her lying in a hospital bed felt wrong. Naomi sighed heavily and leaned back in her chair. “Marilyn, this is serious.” “I know.” “No, I mean really serious,” Naomi pressed. “We're talking about your mother's life here.” Sia nodded in agreement. “Naomi is right. We can't just sit around

Madison’s words kept repeating in Marilyn’s head like a warning. “The boss wants to see you.” Usually, she would have gone immediately. The following day passed far more peacefully than Marilyn expected. For once, Raymond didn’t call her into his office every hour, nor did he find excuses to keep her close. Julian Kane turned out to be exactly the kind of man people expected successful billionaires to be. He looks charming. And easy to talk to. Marilyn spent nearly an hour standing in front of her wardrobe, pulling out one dress after another only to reject each one. It was either too formal, too casual, too obvious or too plain. With a frustrated sigh, she tossed another outfit onto her bed and stared at the growing pile of rejected clo
