“A divorce agreement?” Lucas’s frown deepens, as if I had just spoken in a foreign language. “What do you need that for?” The moment the words leave his mouth, instant regret hits me like a tornado. I mentally slap myself for being so careless. Stupid. Stupid, Lori. I had let my emotions take over and blurted out something so personal to someone I barely knew; brother or not. Why couldn’t I just keep my mouth shut? Now I’ve exposed my broken marriage to him. Lucas’s eyes soften with understanding. He gently places both hands on my shoulders and holds my gaze steadily, as though trying to anchor me. “It’s okay, Lori,” he says calmly, as if he could read every chaotic thought in my head. “I’m not going to pressure you to tell me everything right now. I’ll wait until you’re ready. Take all the time you need.” His thumb moves to my cheek, gently wiping away a tear I didn’t even realize had fallen. The simple touch feels somewhat comforting. “But I want you to know one thing,” he continues, his voice warm and reassuring. “You can always lean on me. I know I’m still a stranger to you right now, but that will change with time. What matters most is that you’re no longer alone. You have a family now, princess. You have us.” His words wrap around my broken heart like a soft blanket. For the first time in what feels like forever, some of the heavy pressure in my chest eases, even if only a little. I press my lips together and give him a small, grateful smile. Lucas pulls back slightly and takes out his phone. “Hold on. Let me call one of our brothers. He’s a top lawyer. He’ll prepare the divorce papers quickly.” He dials the number and speaks briefly. “Hey, Hunter. I need you to prepare divorce papers right away… Yes, it’s urgent. Send them through dispatch immediately.” After getting confirmation, he ends the call and turns back to me. “Thank you.” I whisper sincerely. “Come on,” he says gently, taking my hand and wrapping his fingers around mine. “Let’s get you discharged first.” >>>>> The rest of the day passes in a blur. After Lucas signs the discharge papers, I get cleaned up and finally leave the hospital. Outside the building, we meet the dispatch rider who hands over the divorce documents. Then, Lucas drives me back to the villa, waiting behind while I go grab my things. The moment I step back inside the house, a heavy wave of emotions hits me the moment I step inside. This house that was supposed to be my home for five years has never truly felt like one. Everywhere I look, memories stare back at me coldly. I head straight to my room and start packing my things without wasting any time. My movements are mechanical, but my heart feels like it’s being torn apart with every item I fold. As I move around the room, my eyes catch the elegant reading chair by the window: the one I personally picked and had delivered because Nate once mentioned he liked reading in silence. I had spent hours arranging the perfect lighting and cushions, hoping he would spend more time at home. But he never sat on it once. My gaze drifts to my king-sized bed. Our matrimonial bed that we never shared except for once. And then, there’s the small calendar hanging on the wall beside the bed. Fresh hollow ache forms in my chest. The calendar is still marked with my handwriting, showing dates I had circled and highlighted for the past five years. They’re important dates I saved like Nate’s business trips, important meetings, our wedding anniversary, and his parents’ birthdays. Even the days he casually mentioned he liked a particular meal. I had made sure to note down every vital information and date. I was meticulous to the slightest detail. In fact, everyday, I cross-checked his wardrobe to be sure his suits were perfectly pressed. In the kitchen, I worked tirelessly, ensuring his favorite meals were ready, and the house was always spotless whenever he returned. Even though I never got an ounce of appreciation for my efforts. I did it all hoping that one day he would look at me and see a wife, and not just a burden or a gold-digger. Or the “pathetic maid’s daughter” who forced her way into his life. But he never did. Instead, he took everything for granted. Whenever he looked at me, his eyes held the same cold disgust, and he’d always throw the same accusations at me. “You and your mother planned this from the beginning. Forcing her to sell her kidney just so you could trap me into this marriage.” Those words had cut deeper than any physical pain ever had. A bitter smile touches my lips as fresh tears sting my eyes. What a pathetic joke my life has been. If I could go back in time, I’d have done my best to stop my adoptive mother from donating her kidney to Chairwoman Nessa. Even though I was only nineteen at the time, I would have worked much harder. Five jobs instead of three. I would have done whatever it took to change her mind. Maybe then, my fate would’ve turned out differently, sparing me from this humiliating excuse of a marriage. “What do you think you’re doing?” The sudden cold voice behind me almost makes me jump out of my skin. My heart slams violently against my ribs as I spin around. Nate. He’s standing in the middle of the room, his eyes scanning my half-packed suitcases with clear displeasure. A deep scowl settles on the sharp features of his face before he looks back at me. “Why haven’t you prepared the soup I asked you to make?” He snaps. Irritation flares hot in my chest, but I control it. I fold my arms across my chest and look him straight in the eyes. “Because I don’t want to.” Nate visibly freezes. Clearly, he wasn’t expecting me to talk back. He’s used to me being obedient. A pushover. His quiet, submissive little wife. After a few tense seconds, he recovers and lets out a cold, mocking laugh. Disgust fills his eyes. “Wow. You were supposedly in a serious car accident earlier, and now you suddenly have so much energy to talk back? I knew it. You really are a born liar, aren’t you? A fucking con artist.” I scoff at his foolishness, rage burning deep inside me. A part of me wants to roll up my sleeves and pull down my pants to show him all the bandages. To prove I was really hurt. But I stop myself. What’s the point? There’s nothing left to defend anymore. “Go ahead and think whatever you want.” I say calmly, turning my back to him as I continue packing. Nate scoffs loudly behind me. “You never stop amazing me with these new tricks of yours. So what is this one supposed to be? Talking back and playing the rebel? How pathetic.” I stay silent, even though my blood is boiling. “And what’s even more pathetic,” he continues, voice dripping with contempt, “is how boring and obvious your tricks are. At least if you want to play games, try to be a little more creative—” That did it. Spinning around sharply, I cut him off. “I want a divorce.”~LORETTE~As the man continues performing CPR on the old driver, I search through my memories, trying to figure out where I have seen him before. There is something familiar about him that I can’t quite place. It is only after he finishes reviving the man and the ambulance arrives to take the old man away that everything finally clicks. The crowd surrounding us begins thanking him for his quick response, and the moment I hear his voice again, recognition strikes me.“Marcus?”I say his name cautiously, almost testing whether I am right. For the first time, the man turns his full attention towards me.A small frown appears on his face as he studies me, clearly trying to understand how I know his name. Then, just as quickly, recognition flashes across his eyes.“Oh my…” His expression changes completely. “Lori?”He hurries towards me, staring at me from head to toe as though he cannot believe what he is seeing. Then, he pulls me into a hug. The warmth of his embrace catches me off guard
~LORETTE~When I open my eyes again, the first thing that greets me is the sharp ache splitting through my head.I blink slowly, trying to adjust to my surroundings, and that is when I notice the man sitting beside me.Nate.His fingers gently brush strands of hair away from my face before tucking them behind my ear with a softness that feels almost unfamiliar. The tenderness in his touch makes it seem as though he is handling something fragile and precious enough to break if he is not careful.I just stare at him, stunned, before I find my voice again. “Nate?” I call softly, my voice weak and barely above a whisper. The moment I try to sit up, he immediately moves closer, carefully helping me into a sitting position.“Slowly. You’re still weak.” His voice is low and gentle. He adjusts the covers around me before reaching towards the bedside table beside him. When his hand returns, I realize he’s holding a tray filled with a bowl of steaming soup.“I had the staff prepare this for
LORETTE The moment my palm connects with Ava’s face, shocked gasps erupt around us.Ava’s head snaps to the side from the impact, her eyes widening as she stares back at me in complete disbelief, almost as though she cannot process that I actually did it.Nate looks at me like he’s convinced I have completely lost my mind.“Have you lost your mind, Lori? What the hell was that for?!” He shouts. But I don’t even entertain any of their reactions. Instead, before anyone can even recover from the first slap, I raise my hand again and deliver another one across Ava’s face. This time, the crowd reacts louder. Whispers spread instantly, and people begin taking steps away from me as if I have suddenly transformed into some dangerous creature they need to stay away from.Exactly what Ava wants. It is so obvious that she orchestrated all this just to paint me as unstable. To ruin the reputation that I have just built for myself. Only this time, unlike before, I am not going to stand there and
~LORETTE~Just before Ava’s hand can reach me, my instincts take over. I move quickly, grabbing her wrist and stopping her before she can push me. At the same time, I fight desperately to keep my balance because I know exactly what will happen if I lose my footing.Panic rushes through my veins as I use every ounce of strength I have to push Ava away, my heartbeat thundering loudly in my chest. But Ava refuses to back down. She fights back just as fiercely, her eyes filled with determination as she continues trying to force me backward.“What the hell do you think you’re doing?!” I scream at her. “Leave me alone!”But she doesn’t listen. In the middle of our struggle, my hand catches her hair. My fingers tighten around it instinctively, and a sharp scream leaves her lips.“Witch! Let go of me!”Her hand immediately reaches for my hair in retaliation, and pain shoots through my scalp so suddenly that a cry escapes me.Then she shoves me, hard. This time, I lose my footing. My eyes wid
~LORETTE~“Are you kidding me?” My eyes widen as I stare at him in disbelief.Of all the things Nate could accuse me of, this has to be the most ridiculous. He is the one who sent this dress to me and somehow managed to put me in this situation, yet he has the audacity to stand here looking at me as though I am the one who intentionally planned all of this!“You never stop surprising me, Lori.”His voice is low and almost disappointed, as his dark eyes move over me with an intensity that makes my irritation burn even hotter.I try to pull away from him, but he doesn’t let me go. His body blocks my escape, forcing me to remain exactly where I am.In that moment, I catch the familiar scent of the cold, masculine cologne that always seems to surround him.Immediately, I push the thought away.Absolutely not! I have no business noticing anything about him.“Are you doing this to catch the attention of another wealthy man?” he asks, his jaw tightening. “Is that it? Trying to add another n
~LORETTE~“Actually…” she says. “I brought with me a little something.”I lift a brow, staring at her in disbelief. Ava? Brought me something? For a second, I almost laugh. Perhaps pigs have finally grown wings because the last person I ever expected to show me kindness is standing right in front of me with a gift in her hands. And even if she truly did bring me something, there is no way I would accept it. Who knows what kind of trap could be hiding beneath that sweet smile of hers? But before I can question her, she continues.“It’s from Nate.”The words instantly stop me.Ava’s smile widens, a playful glint flashing in her eyes. “He was actually the one who wanted to bring it to you, but something urgent came up that needed his attention. So I offered to deliver it for him.”Although that explanation sounds far more believable than the first, my suspicion only grows. What exactly is Nate sending me that requires such an extravagant shopping bag? Since when did that start? Before I
~LORETTE~ “I don’t think that’s possible, Michael.” Nate says into the phone, his voice low and uncertain. He keeps staring at me, as if expecting my face to betray the truth. I hold my breath, heart hammering hard in my chest. “I have the evidence here, sir…” Michael’s voice suddenly pauses. Th
~LORETTE~ Nate bursts into a short, dry, humorless laugh as he stares at me like I’ve completely lost my mind. “You? Divorce?” He shakes his head, amusement dripping from his voice. “I have to admit that this one is indeed creative, almost cute.” I just stare at him calmly. This time, there’s no
~LORETTE~ “Hospital?” Lucas’s voice immediately fills with heavy worry. “What happened? Are you okay, Lori?” “I got into an accident,” I reply quietly, not having the energy to explain more. We’re not close enough for that. “Oh God, Lori…” The panic in his voice grows. “Were you badly injured? Pl
~LORETTE~ “Help me, please… my baby…” I choke out in my wrecked car, drenched in my blood, hoping somebody would hear me. But only cold silence greets me. I have just been involved in an accident on my way home from my prenatal checkup. One second, I was smiling like the most contented woman ali
