“I don’t think that’s possible, Michael.” Nate says into the phone, his voice low and uncertain. He keeps staring at me, as if expecting my face to betray the truth. I hold my breath, heart hammering hard in my chest. “I have the evidence here, sir…” Michael’s voice suddenly pauses. The silence stretches. “What’s going on, Michael?” Nate’s tone grows impatient. “Where’s the evidence?” “Uh… sir…” Michael stutters, clearly confused. “I just refreshed the page and… I can’t find the record anymore. It’s gone.” Nate frowns deeply. The heavy tension in my chest loosens slightly. I can finally breathe again. Lucas. He must have had the records deleted before we left the hospital after I told him I wanted to keep it a secret from everyone. “What the hell are you saying?” Nate snaps, irritation clear in his voice. “My apologies, sir. I think I made a mistake. I’m truly sorry.” Nate exhales deeply, looking visibly relieved, then ends the call. The once pale, shocked expression on his face is now replaced with a sarcastic sneer. “Of course it was nonsense,” he says, scoffing. “A miscarriage? When you and I have barely shared a bed in five years?” His words twist bitterly in my chest. He doesn’t even remember that night two months ago. After that torturous sex, I had quietly cleaned him up afterward and led him back to his room, terrified he would wake up and accuse me of taking advantage of him. Fortunately, he never remembered. And I never told him, except for today that I’d planned to tell him about the baby. But look where we are now. Still, a stupid question slips from my lips before I can stop it. “What if it were true?” I ask quietly. “What if there really was a baby?” Nate eyes me from head to toe with pure disgust. “Then that would mean you actually managed to get pregnant. But that’s impossible. I’d rather die than get you pregnant. You’re already evil and despicable enough. I don’t need a mini version of you running around. The thought of touching you makes my skin crawl with disgust.” Even though his words hit me like a train wreck, a small, bitter smile touches my lips. For the first time, I’m glad I lost the baby. At least she won’t have to grow up in this cruel house, treated like a second-class child while Ava’s baby becomes the prince. Just then, the bedroom door suddenly opens. My jaw slackens in disbelief as Ava walks in like she already owns the place. “Baby, I’ve been waiting downstairs for so long!” She whines dramatically, pouting like a spoiled child. She presses her body against Nate, completely ignoring me at first. “You said you were only getting my soup. What’s taking so long?” I cross my arms over my chest, staring in disbelief. Of course, I knew he planned to move her in, but I didn’t expect her to have the audacity to barge into our matrimonial bedroom. Finally, Ava’s eyes shift to me just then. A fake, overly sweet smile spreads across her lips. “I’ve heard so much about you,” she says sweetly. Then she blinks her eyes like a baby and pouts again. “I hope you’re not mad that I showed up here without your awareness. You know, I got into a car accident today and Nate has been taking care of me since we’re old friends. I hope you’re not upset and uncomfortable? Please, don’t blame Nate. He’s just being kind.” I bite my tongue hard to stop myself from firing at her. I know exactly what game she’s playing. Acting like the sweet, innocent girl while rubbing salt into my wounds to see if I’ll break. But I refuse to give her the satisfaction. “Sweetheart…” Nate’s voice turns soft and tender as he wraps his arms around her, as if I’m not even in the room. He stares deep into her eyes lovingly. “I’m sorry, I got held up by something unimportant. Just wait for me outside, okay? I’ll join you shortly.” The words sting like acid. I am the ‘something unimportant’, huh? “Okay.” Ava nods, then turns to me again, waving as she starts to move away. “See you soon, Lorette.” I don’t miss the subtle, victorious smirk on her face as she walks out through the door. Once she’s gone, Nate turns back to me with hardened, ice-cold eyes. If one didn’t know him, they’d think he had bipolar disorder with how fast he switches from warm to freezing the moment he has to deal with me. “You stay in this house and wait for me to return this evening,” he orders, pointing at me like I'm a disobedient child. “As for that stupid divorce nonsense you mentioned? I’ll pretend I never heard it. You’re not going anywhere.” Then, without waiting for my reply, he storms out of the room and slams the door behind him. Deafening silence swallows the space. I stand there for a long moment, replaying his words. He still thinks I’m not serious. He still believes he can control me. Well, he’s in for a ton of surprises. Grabbing the handle of my suitcase tighter, I open the door, and walk out. As I descend the staircase into the grand living room, I take one final look at the luxurious villa I had lived in for five painful years. This house had never been my home. Exhaling deeply, I step outside. Lucas is already waiting, leaning against his black car. The moment he sees me, he straightens up, concern written all over his face. “Can we drive me somewhere important before you take me home?” I ask, pushing down the heaviness in my heart. “There’s something I must do.”~LORETTE~The gallery has never been this busy, not even during its grand opening two years ago. It was Aaron who said so himself.Ever since the unveiling event, customers have been pouring in from the moment we open until long after closing time. Every painting we display is sold almost immediately, and more often than not, some people aren’t coming to buy art but to simply meet me.Some ask for photographs, and others bring sketchbooks for me to sign. Many tell me they’ve followed Masked LRT for years and never imagined they’d one day meet the woman behind the mask. The journalists are even worse.Hardly a day passes without someone requesting an interview, hoping to be the next publication to feature my story. The constant influx of visitors becomes so overwhelming that Aaron eventually replaces the gallery’s front entrance with a reinforced security door, allowing staff to screen visitors before letting them inside.“I never imagined fame could become a workplace hazard.” He jok
~NATE~ “Sir, would you like me to have your secretary connect you with the team from Montgomery Enterprises now?”Michael’s voice breaks through the silence just as I shut my laptop with a weary sigh. I’ve spent the entire day buried under contracts, financial reports, and meeting summaries, and at this point, even another five minutes of work sounds unbearable.I lean back in my chair and tip my head against the leather headrest, staring up at the ceiling.“No,” I reply after a moment. “We’ll deal with that tomorrow.”The thought barely leaves my mind before another one takes its place.“Did you manage to get through to Lori?”Michael shifts awkwardly. “I tried again, sir. But she blocked my number.”A laugh slips out before I can stop it.Of course she did. It’s so unbelievably Lori now that I can’t even bring myself to be annoyed anymore. That girl has become an expert at cutting off every possible route I could use to reach her. She blocks my number, blocks Michael’s number, and

~LORETTE~By the time the event finally comes to an end and we’re driving home, I still haven’t fully processed everything that’s happened tonight. It all feels like a dream I’m terrified of waking up from.Through the tinted window beside me, I watch the city roll by, and everywhere I look, the excitement is impossible to miss. Giant digital billboards replay highlights from the unveiling, while crowds gather outside restaurants, cafés, and electronics stores to watch the footage on mounted televisions. People walking along the sidewalks are glued to their phones, smiling and pointing at their screens, talking animatedly about the event as though it has become the only thing the city can discuss tonight. They’re talking about me. The realization overwhelms me all over again. For what feels like the hundredth time today, my eyes sting with tears.Beside me, Ella reaches over and gently squeezes my hand.“You really are loved, Lori,” she says with a smile that is equal parts proud an
~AVA~“You’ve got to be kidding me.” Ava mutters to herself as she sits frozen in her seat, her smile long gone as she watches Apex command the stage with that effortless charisma of his.The audience sings along, waving their phone lights in the air, and applauding after every song.At the center of it all stands Lori who’s laughing and smiling so brightly that the entire ballroom seems to revolve around her.The sight leaves a bitter taste in Ava’s mouth. To make matters worse, of all the people in the world, her own cousin is the one performing tonight. She doesn’t care how internationally famous Apex is. He should’ve rejected the invitation! He should’ve turned this event down. Then again, can she really blame him? Just like everyone else, he had no idea who Masked LRT truly was.The humiliation still burns beneath her skin. She has never felt so publicly humiliated in her entire life. She had spent weeks bragging about becoming friends with Masked LRT, looking down on Lori as th
~LORETTE~The cool evening air brushes against my face the instant the mask slips away. For one suspended moment, my heart lodges itself somewhere in my throat. The entire ballroom falls so quiet that I can almost hear my own breathing.Hundreds of eyes are fixed on me, and not a single person says a word.My gaze instinctively drifts toward Nate. He’s already on his feet.Disbelief is written plainly across his face as he stares at me, almost as though he’s forgotten how to blink. Beside him, Bentley and Ava look as if all the blood has drained from their bodies. Their expressions are frozen in complete shock, their mouths slightly parted.A knot tightens painfully in my stomach. The reception I’m getting… It's almost like everyone is disappointed at the reveal.Maybe this was a mistake. Maybe I was right all along. The silence stretches for another heartbeat before whispers begin spreading across the room.“Isn’t that the woman who won the Quills on Fire Art Competition?”“It is!”
~LORETTE~ “I shouldn’t have accused you the way I did…” Nate continues, his hand still gripping my wrist gently. “I’m sorry, Lori.” I blink, stunned. Nate? Apologizing to me? It might as well rain monkeys today. I clear my throat and firmly pull my hand from his grip. If this had been any othe
~LORETTE~ Nate bursts into a short, dry, humorless laugh as he stares at me like I’ve completely lost my mind. “You? Divorce?” He shakes his head, amusement dripping from his voice. “I have to admit that this one is indeed creative, almost cute.” I just stare at him calmly. This time, there’s no
~LORETTE~ “A divorce agreement?” Lucas’s frown deepens, as if I had just spoken in a foreign language. “What do you need that for?” The moment the words leave his mouth, regret hits me like a tornado. Instant shame washes over me, and I mentally slap myself for being so careless. Stupid. Stupid,
~LORETTE~ “Hospital?” Lucas’s voice immediately fills with heavy worry. “What happened? Are you okay, Lori?” “I got into an accident,” I reply quietly, not having the energy to explain more. We’re not close enough for that. “Oh God, Lori…” The panic in his voice grows. “Were you badly injured? Pl
