Chapter 4

Anonymous
Carl said, annoyed, "Why didn't you even say hello to Laurel?"

I looked at the disgust written across his face. My heart was already dead, but somehow it still found room to ache. This was the child I'd loved for seven years...

Then, out of nowhere, Carl took Laurel's hand and said, "Laurel, just move in with us! You've got my baby brother or sister in there — you can't be careless! Our house is huge and gorgeous, you'll be so comfortable here. You need to rest and take care of yourself, and I can't wait to start teaching my little sibling!"

He shot me a glance, then announced loudly, "The bedroom on the third floor is really nice. Laurel, you should sleep there!"

The third-floor bedroom belonged to Dwayne and me.

Hearing that, Dwayne shot Carl an approving look. Whatever Carl had just said, it had landed exactly where he wanted it to.

On the drive home, I'd already looked into everything. The fire three years ago traced back to the fact that Laurel's parents had died in a car accident. At the time, the Arnault family happened to need the Winslet family's backing for a project, so Dwayne hadn't been able to go be with Laurel while she handled her parents' funeral — under pressure from my family, he hadn't even been allowed to show his face near her.

That was why he'd come home that night blackout drunk. He hadn't wanted to face me.

And under Dwayne's careful steering, Carl had slowly grown attached to gentle, considerate Laurel, while all I ever did was check his homework — no jokes, no charm, not even pretty to look at, dressed in clothes that had gone out of style years ago. Frumpy, through and through.

Thinking about it, I glanced down at what I was wearing and gave a bitter little laugh.

After I got together with Dwayne, I'd noticed he didn't care for anything extravagant, so I'd stopped wearing my expensive jewelry and carrying my designer bags.

Later, once Carl was born, he refused to let any nanny near him — he'd cry the second I left the room — so I ended up raising him myself, with no time or energy left to think about how I looked.

No wonder I couldn't compare to Laurel, who always dressed with such effortless, fashionable ease.

Laurel noticed the look on my face and hesitated, sounding troubled. "Carl, you two are the real family here. I'm an outsider — I shouldn't be staying in your house. And if I move in like this, Ms. Winslet won't be happy about it."

Carl clung to her hand, whining. He stuck out his lower lip. "Janine wouldn't dare be unhappy about it! Don't worry, she always listens to me and Dad. You don't need to worry about her at all. I really, really want us to be a family, Laurel! You're the most beautiful woman in the whole world. I wish you were my mom."

Carl really was Dwayne's son through and through. He'd seemed to understand, from the moment he was born, exactly how much I cared about the two of them — and exactly how certain he could be that I'd never fight back against either of them.

Watching their little performance play out below me, I laughed out loud. "Did the two of you forget something? This is my house. My name's on the deed. So who exactly are you, putting on a show in my home?"

  • What the Fake Amnesia Revealed   Chapter 11

A month later, at an international business summit, I saw Dwayne looking more confident than ever. He'd already gotten his marriage license with Laurel, and he was walking her around, introducing her to everyone.Carl was there too, wearing a suit that didn't fit him properly, noticeably thinner than before. His eyes lit up again when he saw me, but then he noticed Chloe beside me, dressed up like a little princess, and the easy warmth between the two of us. His expression dimmed.Dwayne walked over, all easy smiles. "It's been a while, Janine. I heard the Winslets want to do business with the wealthy Mr. N. I could introduce you — I hit it off with him myself the other day."Watching him look so pleased with himself, I almost wanted to laugh. That was when a low, pleasant voice spoke up beside me. I turned and saw a man in a perfectly tailored suit, onyx cufflinks glinting at his wrists. He smiled. "It's been a long time, Janine."I studied his familiar features, racking my bra

I knew Dwayne would eventually come crawling back to me, but I hadn't expected him to break so fast. He showed up at the Winslet estate with Carl in tow. When the butler told me the news, I was in the middle of helping Chloe with her homework.I thought it over and decided to see him after all.But when I actually laid eyes on Dwayne, I was still caught off guard. The polished, refined man he used to be was gone, replaced by someone haggard and worn down. His eyes lit up the moment he saw me.I smiled. "Watching you get more miserable by the day makes me happy."Before Dwayne could get a word out, Carl cut in, indignant. "How can you be so vicious? He's my dad. Can't you show him some respect?"I laughed. Carl still didn't seem to understand the position he was in.I sent Chloe off to play with her homework — she was too young, and I didn't want her exposed to adult grudges so early in life. She deserved a happy childhood. The moment Dwayne saw Chloe, his temper flared. "You wo

  • What the Fake Amnesia Revealed   Chapter 9

The day I finished the divorce procedures, the weather turned out beautiful, though Dwayne looked like he was in mourning. I knew exactly what had him so miserable — nothing but trouble on the business side of things. He looked at me, his expression complicated, and said quietly, "Janine, we're divorced now, but if you ever need help with anything, I'll still help if I can."I let out a cold snort. "Then go get reborn into a better life first, and maybe I'll consider asking you for help. Worry about yourself instead. Don't come to me later looking for child support money for Carl."Dwayne was furious. He glared at me several times, working hard to swallow his temper before finally walking off, pretending none of it had bothered him.As for my family— once they saw the security footage of Carl harming me, several pieces of antique porcelain ended up shattered on the floor that same night. It was only thanks to the old family butler working up his courage to drag them all to the boxi

Carl froze. Even he couldn't come up with an answer to my question right away. But then his eyes landed on the burn scar on my cheek, and a flicker of disgust crossed his face. "You can't compare to Laurel at all. You're not even pretty, you're useless, and all you ever do is watch Dad like a hawk. Someone like Laurel is the only one who deserves to be my mom."And you're always controlling me — you won't let me have ice cream, you won't let me have fried chicken, and you make me drink that gross medicine every single day. You're hideous. You don't deserve to tell me what to do!"This time, it was my turn to freeze.I'd run through so many explanations in my head — maybe Laurel had deliberately turned him against me, maybe he was just copying Dwayne's attitude toward me.But it had never once crossed my mind that these were his own thoughts, all along. I'd had no idea he was carrying around this much resentment toward me.How ridiculous.Carl kept going, accusing me. "It makes m

I tossed the paperwork at Dwayne and left.On my way out, I told the butler to sell the villa. I'd expected it to hurt — Dwayne and I had lived there for seven years, after all. Even after the fire, I hadn't been able to let go of the place. I'd spent a fortune restoring it to exactly how it used to be.But now, all I felt was lightness, like a set of shackles had finally come off.I didn't have to orbit anyone else's life anymore. I could have a life of my own. I wasn't anyone's wife. I wasn't anyone's mother. I was just me.For years, love had kept me locked in a cage of my own making. I'd spent every day chasing after affection that was never mine to have, unable to break free, watching helplessly as I turned into a walking corpse. Now, finally, I was free. Finally, I could live for myself.I packed up everything that belonged to me, and only then did I realize how out of date all my bags and accessories were. I hadn't bought myself anything new in years.I told the butler t

  • What the Fake Amnesia Revealed   Chapter 6

I didn't know how that whole scene ended, or how they finally left. All I felt was exhausted.I didn't care about any of it anymore. I just wanted the divorce. The next time I saw Dwayne, his haggard appearance still caught me off guard. He hadn't been having an easy time of it either. Once my family learned what I'd endured over the past seven years, they were furious. They pulled every privilege they'd extended to Dwayne when we married, and once word got around Charlston City's upper circles that the Arnaults had crossed the Winslets, people started cutting ties with them one by one.The Arnault family was a dog without a home now, and everyone was lining up to kick them while they were down, just to stay in the Winslets' good graces. When Dwayne showed up in front of me, his suit was wrinkled, and his jaw was covered in stubble."Janine," he asked, drained, "does it make you happy, seeing me like this? You never lost your memory, did you?"I smiled and nodded, watching disb
