Chapter 5

Anonymous
At my words, Dwayne gave me a cold look. "Janine, have you had enough of this? Laurel's pregnant. She needs to be taken care of properly. Could you please stop causing scenes?"

My eyes drifted, without meaning to, toward the spot where I'd fallen. It had been cleaned spotless by now, and the glass marbles that had nearly killed me were long gone, thrown out by the butler.

But I remembered exactly what he'd shown me on the security footage.

I'd watched Carl scatter a handful of glass marbles across the top of the stairs, then lean over the railing with a malicious little smirk and shriek, "Mom, my head hurts so bad!"

I'd watched him stand there after I tumbled down the stairs, watched him look at me lying unconscious on the floor without so much as calling for help — not until the housekeeper and the maid he'd sent away came back and found me, and only then did he throw himself at me, looking suitably terrified.

Those images were burned into my mind. Just thinking about them made me shake all over.

I couldn't wrap my head around it — the child I'd nearly died bringing into this world actually had a heart that cruel. Before, when he'd sided with Laurel, I'd been able to tell myself he was just young, that he didn't understand what he was doing.

But there was no comforting myself out of this one.

Hadn't I been good enough to Dwayne and Carl? Hadn't I debased myself enough for them? Why were they doing this to me?

I let out a cold laugh and turned to the butler. "Since when does this house let strangers walk in and throw their weight around in front of me? Get them out... oh, and that woman's pregnant, so don't let anyone rough her up on the way out. I don't want it pinned on me later."

The butler acknowledged me and called for the bodyguards.

Dwayne's expression darkened. "What are you trying to say? You don't want a peaceful life anymore?"

I pressed a hand to my mouth in mock surprise and asked, all innocence, "Who are you people, exactly? What does your wife being pregnant have anything to do with you three living in my house? Is this some kind of shelter for refugees?"

Dwayne exploded. "Enough! Have you lost your mind? How dare you insult us like that!"

I let the smile drop from my face and stared him down.

Seven years ago, one glimpse of him at the old family estate had been enough to root him deep in my heart. Now, looking at him, all I could see was a stranger. A stranger frightening enough to make my skin crawl.

Dwayne kept going. "If you hadn't forced me to break up with Laurel back then, I'd have already married her and had kids with her!"

I laughed at that.

The bodyguards arrived quickly and escorted Laurel out with perfect courtesy. Dwayne and Carl didn't get the same treatment — they were physically thrown out of the villa.

I stood in the doorway and watched father and son sprawled in a heap outside, and some of the resentment inside me finally eased.

Dwayne snapped at me, furious. "Janine, you'll regret treating us this way!"

He helped Carl up, then turned, worried, to ask Laurel if she was all right. Laurel's eyes flicked toward me, and she clutched her stomach and cried out in pain. Seeing that, Carl came charging at me, furious.

He was fast, and I'd only just been discharged from the hospital, still weak. He knocked me straight to the ground.

Pain tore through my body. Still not satisfied, Carl raised his fist. "If anything happens to my baby brother or sister, I'll never let this go..."

His fist came down fast, but the bodyguards reacted in time and caught his arm before it landed.

I stared at him coldly while he strained to lunge at me, teeth bared like he wanted to tear into me.

I laughed, hollow and hopeless.

"I really did raise an ungrateful little monster.

"Let's get a divorce."

  • What the Fake Amnesia Revealed   Chapter 11

A month later, at an international business summit, I saw Dwayne looking more confident than ever. He'd already gotten his marriage license with Laurel, and he was walking her around, introducing her to everyone.Carl was there too, wearing a suit that didn't fit him properly, noticeably thinner than before. His eyes lit up again when he saw me, but then he noticed Chloe beside me, dressed up like a little princess, and the easy warmth between the two of us. His expression dimmed.Dwayne walked over, all easy smiles. "It's been a while, Janine. I heard the Winslets want to do business with the wealthy Mr. N. I could introduce you — I hit it off with him myself the other day."Watching him look so pleased with himself, I almost wanted to laugh. That was when a low, pleasant voice spoke up beside me. I turned and saw a man in a perfectly tailored suit, onyx cufflinks glinting at his wrists. He smiled. "It's been a long time, Janine."I studied his familiar features, racking my bra

  • What the Fake Amnesia Revealed   Chapter 10

I knew Dwayne would eventually come crawling back to me, but I hadn't expected him to break so fast. He showed up at the Winslet estate with Carl in tow. When the butler told me the news, I was in the middle of helping Chloe with her homework.I thought it over and decided to see him after all.But when I actually laid eyes on Dwayne, I was still caught off guard. The polished, refined man he used to be was gone, replaced by someone haggard and worn down. His eyes lit up the moment he saw me.I smiled. "Watching you get more miserable by the day makes me happy."Before Dwayne could get a word out, Carl cut in, indignant. "How can you be so vicious? He's my dad. Can't you show him some respect?"I laughed. Carl still didn't seem to understand the position he was in.I sent Chloe off to play with her homework — she was too young, and I didn't want her exposed to adult grudges so early in life. She deserved a happy childhood. The moment Dwayne saw Chloe, his temper flared. "You wo

  • What the Fake Amnesia Revealed   Chapter 9

The day I finished the divorce procedures, the weather turned out beautiful, though Dwayne looked like he was in mourning. I knew exactly what had him so miserable — nothing but trouble on the business side of things. He looked at me, his expression complicated, and said quietly, "Janine, we're divorced now, but if you ever need help with anything, I'll still help if I can."I let out a cold snort. "Then go get reborn into a better life first, and maybe I'll consider asking you for help. Worry about yourself instead. Don't come to me later looking for child support money for Carl."Dwayne was furious. He glared at me several times, working hard to swallow his temper before finally walking off, pretending none of it had bothered him.As for my family— once they saw the security footage of Carl harming me, several pieces of antique porcelain ended up shattered on the floor that same night. It was only thanks to the old family butler working up his courage to drag them all to the boxi

Carl froze. Even he couldn't come up with an answer to my question right away. But then his eyes landed on the burn scar on my cheek, and a flicker of disgust crossed his face. "You can't compare to Laurel at all. You're not even pretty, you're useless, and all you ever do is watch Dad like a hawk. Someone like Laurel is the only one who deserves to be my mom."And you're always controlling me — you won't let me have ice cream, you won't let me have fried chicken, and you make me drink that gross medicine every single day. You're hideous. You don't deserve to tell me what to do!"This time, it was my turn to freeze.I'd run through so many explanations in my head — maybe Laurel had deliberately turned him against me, maybe he was just copying Dwayne's attitude toward me.But it had never once crossed my mind that these were his own thoughts, all along. I'd had no idea he was carrying around this much resentment toward me.How ridiculous.Carl kept going, accusing me. "It makes m

  • What the Fake Amnesia Revealed   Chapter 7

I tossed the paperwork at Dwayne and left.On my way out, I told the butler to sell the villa. I'd expected it to hurt — Dwayne and I had lived there for seven years, after all. Even after the fire, I hadn't been able to let go of the place. I'd spent a fortune restoring it to exactly how it used to be.But now, all I felt was lightness, like a set of shackles had finally come off.I didn't have to orbit anyone else's life anymore. I could have a life of my own. I wasn't anyone's wife. I wasn't anyone's mother. I was just me.For years, love had kept me locked in a cage of my own making. I'd spent every day chasing after affection that was never mine to have, unable to break free, watching helplessly as I turned into a walking corpse. Now, finally, I was free. Finally, I could live for myself.I packed up everything that belonged to me, and only then did I realize how out of date all my bags and accessories were. I hadn't bought myself anything new in years.I told the butler t

  • What the Fake Amnesia Revealed   Chapter 6

I didn't know how that whole scene ended, or how they finally left. All I felt was exhausted.I didn't care about any of it anymore. I just wanted the divorce. The next time I saw Dwayne, his haggard appearance still caught me off guard. He hadn't been having an easy time of it either. Once my family learned what I'd endured over the past seven years, they were furious. They pulled every privilege they'd extended to Dwayne when we married, and once word got around Charlston City's upper circles that the Arnaults had crossed the Winslets, people started cutting ties with them one by one.The Arnault family was a dog without a home now, and everyone was lining up to kick them while they were down, just to stay in the Winslets' good graces. When Dwayne showed up in front of me, his suit was wrinkled, and his jaw was covered in stubble."Janine," he asked, drained, "does it make you happy, seeing me like this? You never lost your memory, did you?"I smiled and nodded, watching disb
