Chapter 7

Author: Arya
By the time the warriors broke down the storage room door, I had already lost consciousness.

The healer injected me with a cleansing remedy and rushed me to the clinic.

Night had fallen by the time I opened my eyes again.

"The allergic reaction caused severe swelling in your airway," the healer told me. "We traced the location from your emergency call. Another few minutes, and we might not have reached you in time."

She placed my test results beside the bed.

"The injection treated the reaction.

  • When My Heart Died, There Was No Way Back   Chapter 10

The truth spread through the packs soon after the gathering. For seven years, the Moon Goddess had chosen me.For seven years, Kael had overruled that choice for Rosalie, even giving the only vial of Silver Spring water to an Omega who had never needed it to survive. The Moon Council opened a formal investigation.More pack members began to question whether Kael deserved to remain Alpha, and even the elders who had once supported him refused to keep defending what he had done.Rosalie's lies surfaced one after another.Servants who had once been silenced by her tears finally came forward. They described the illnesses she had staged, the fights she had provoked, and the way she had taken the Silver Spring water despite knowing Astra was failing. The clinic had no records to support most of the weakness Rosalie had claimed. In seven years, not one vial of Silver Spring water had saved her from a life-threatening condition. The empty vials were found polished and arranged inside her room.

I held Kael's gaze until he realized what he had said and looked away."You're right."I gave a small nod."I gave her the title. I gave her the Silver Spring water. Now I'm giving her you too."Kael recoiled as if I had struck him."That isn't what I meant.""I thought you were exaggerating because you wanted the title. If I'd known the report was real, I never would have—""I told you."My voice remained calm."At the bakery, I told you what the healer had found and held the report out to you. You decided I was lying without even reading it."Kael opened his mouth, but nothing came out.My father took the journal from inside his coat. The cover had softened and curled from being handled too often."We read it."His voice was heavy."We didn't know how much you had suffered until after you left."He explained that when I was young, my parents had struggled to make a living and had little time to care for me.When they adopted Rosalie, they believed a younger child without her birth pa

"I'm not going."I refused the moment I saw the Silver Moon crest on the invitation.Cassian did not try to change my mind.He set the invitation back on the table."The choice is yours. If you don't want to attend, I'll send another delegate."That night, Astra spoke softly inside my mind."Elara, we ran once because we had to survive. Going back now wouldn't be for them."I lay awake for a long time. Before morning, I picked up the invitation again.Three years after leaving, I returned to Silver Moon territory as the Saintess of the Frost Moon Pack.Cassian accompanied me to the gathering and placed the moonstone crown over my hair before the assembled packs. The same people who had watched Kael take the title from me now rose and offered me the formal bow reserved for a true Saintess.During my years in the north, I had traveled with healers to the most isolated packs and helped calm wolves on the verge of permanent sleep. At first, some claimed I owed my title to Cassian's protect

It did nothing for Astra. Silver Spring water is still the only thing that can restore a wolf this weak."I gripped the papers and held on to the only thought that mattered.I wanted to live.I did not call my family.Instead, I contacted Lyra, an old friend who had once worked at the Northern Moon Clinic. After hearing what had happened, she told me the Frost Moon Pack still followed the oldest laws governing the selection of a Saintess. If I was willing to sever my bond with the Silver Moon Pa

  • When My Heart Died, There Was No Way Back   Chapter 6

My parents rushed to the table and stared at the unfamiliar face. The moment my mother understood that the dead woman was not her daughter, she covered her mouth and broke down.My father braced both hands against the stone table as relief drained the strength from his legs.Rosalie was the only one who looked disappointed. She hid it quickly and gave a bitter laugh."Elara must be hiding on purpose. She knew we'd panic. She wanted us to think she was dead so she could watch us suffer."The relief on my father's face hardened into anger."How could she use something like this to punish her own family?"Aiden remembered how he had fallen apart in front of everyone, and his guilt curdled into humiliation. He took out his phone and sent me a long message.【Enough, Elara. Was it fun making us think you were dead? Maybe I shouldn't have locked you in the storage room, but that doesn't give you the right to play this kind of sick game. If you have any pride left, don't come home. I don't wan

  • When My Heart Died, There Was No Way Back   Chapter 5

My mother's eyes rolled back, and her body went limp.Aiden caught her before she hit the ground. My father shoved through the pack members gathered outside the bakery and stumbled inside. The storage room door had been split down the middle. Silver-moon flowers lay crushed across the floor, and a faint trail of blood still marked the threshold."Elara!"He called my name again and again, but the empty room gave him no answer.Kael stood in the doorway, staring at the blood. For once, he could not hide the fear in his eyes."No. She was fine a few hours ago. She has to be fine."He sounded as if he were trying to convince himself. My father carried my unconscious mother to the car, and the others hurried after him.Rosalie was forgotten in the confusion. She had to gather the skirt of her moonstone gown and run after them.No one spoke on the way to the clinic.Kael called me again and again, but every attempt went unanswered. In the front seat, my father kept insisting that it had onl
