The convoy drove through the city in tense silence. In the back seat, Don Emilio Vitale held Lana close, one arm around her small frame.

She didn't move. She didn't speak.

Only hours earlier, she had been running through the Marcone gardens, chasing butterflies beneath the afternoon sun. Now she sat still in his arms, her wide brown eyes empty, as if the world had stopped.

Emilio had seen grown men return from war with less shock.

But Lana was only four. She should have been thinking about bedtime stories, not grief.

From the front seat, Rocco glanced back. “Dr. Bianchi is waiting at the estate.”

Emilio gave a brief nod. His jaw remained tight.

When the convoy reached the Vitale Estate, the gates opened at once. Several people were already waiting outside the main house.

Carissa Vitale hurried down the steps, her face pale with worry. Behind her stood ten-year-old Soren, looking confused and anxious. Carissa's older brother, Bruno Greco, and his wife, Dolores, had also hurried over after hearing the news.

The moment Emilio stepped out of the car with Lana in his arms, silence fell over them. No one had expected to see her.

Carissa’s breath caught. “Oh...” She covered her mouth, her eyes filling with sorrow.

Lana didn’t look up. Her face remained buried against Emilio’s shoulder.

“I’ve got her,” Emilio said quietly when Rocco moved closer.

Rocco nodded and stepped back.

Inside, the household staff stood silently, heads bowed as Emilio carried Lana through the hall. No one spoke.

Dr. Salvatore Bianchi was waiting. His expression softened the moment he saw her.

"Lana," he said gently.

She lifted her head, and a flicker of recognition crossed her face.

Dr. Bianchi had cared for her since she was born. He had treated every fever, scrape, and childhood illness. His familiar face reached her in a way no one else's could.

"I need to check on you, sweetheart," he said gently.

Lana looked at Emilio.

"I'm right here," he said.

He carried her to a guest bedroom and laid her gently on the bed. Only then did she let go of him.

Dr. Bianchi examined her in silence. Lana didn't resist. She lay still, staring at the ceiling.

After checking her pulse and examining her injuries, Emilio asked a maid to bring warm water, clean towels, and a fresh set of clothes. Then he stepped outside with Dr. Bianchi.

“How is she?” Emilio asked.

Dr. Bianchi removed his glasses with a weary sigh. "Physically, she's fortunate. Just a few cuts and bruises. Nothing serious."

Emilio let out a slow breath, but the relief didn't last.

"The real concern is what she's been through."

The doctor glanced toward the bedroom.

"No child should witness something like that. She may become withdrawn, refuse to eat, cling to familiar people, or wake up frightened."

Emilio listened in silence.

"Don't force her to talk," Dr. Bianchi continued. "She needs patience, stability, and, above all, to feel safe."

"She hasn't said much," Emilio said quietly.

"That's normal. Some children shut down after a trauma. It's how they cope."

"Will she recover?"

Dr. Bianchi met his eyes. "Her body will." He paused. "The rest will take time."

Emilio nodded. "Thank you."

When he returned to the room, Lana was exactly where he'd left her, awake and silent.

Outside the room, Carissa waited quietly by the door. She looked from Emilio to the little girl resting against him.

“Everyone’s downstairs,” she said softly.

Emilio nodded. Still holding Lana’s hand, he rose. “I’ll bring her with me.”

He wasn’t ready to let her out of his sight. Neither was she.

The dining room was unusually quiet. No one seemed interested in the meal before them.

Carissa sat beside Soren, while Bruno and Dolores occupied the opposite side of the table. Even the staff moved more softly than usual, as though afraid to disturb the silence that had settled over the house.

Emilio took his seat at the head of the table, Lana beside him.

She hadn’t let go of his hand once. Every time he shifted, her small fingers tightened around his.

Carissa watched her for a moment before looking at Emilio. “How is she?”

“Dr. Bianchi says she’s physically unharmed.”

“And otherwise?”

Emilio’s gaze drifted to Lana. “She’s frightened.”

No one spoke after that.

A maid set a small bowl of soup in front of Lana. She stared at it without interest.

Emilio picked up the bowl and spoon. “Lana.”

She didn’t respond.

“You should try to eat a little.”

When she remained silent, he softened his tone. “Would you like something else? I can have the kitchen make it.”

She looked down. “Mama makes the best strawberry muffins.”

A faint sadness crossed Emilio’s face. “I know. But right now, you need something warm.”

She hesitated.

“Just a little,” he said, lifting the spoon. “Then we’ll get you something sweet.”

She looked at the soup, then back at him. “Just one spoon?”

He nodded.

She opened her mouth and took one spoonful, then another. Emilio didn’t rush her. He fed her patiently until she managed a few more bites.

Around them, quiet glances passed. No one had ever seen Don Emilio Vitale so gentle.

Across the table, Bruno watched in silence. Dolores lowered her gaze. Even Soren sat unusually still.

After a while, Emilio set the spoon down.

“From tonight on,” he said calmly, “Lana will stay here.”

The room fell silent.

Carissa looked up. “Stay... here?”

Emilio nodded. “Permanently.”

Soren’s eyes widened.

Bruno exchanged a glance with Dolores before speaking. “For how long?”

“As long as she needs.”

There was no room for argument.

Carissa looked at Lana, who remained unaware of the attention. Her expression softened. “I’ll have a room prepared.”

“Thank you,” Emilio said.

No one questioned him further.

Later that evening, a bedroom was prepared. Toys were arranged neatly on shelves, along with books and a small stuffed rabbit.

Carissa stood at the doorway. “I think you’ll like this room.”

Lana didn’t move. She stood beside Emilio, clutching his hand tightly.

“It’s all right,” Carissa said gently. “You can come in.”

Lana looked around the unfamiliar space, then quietly shook her head. “No.”

Carissa knelt to her level. “I can stay with you if you’d like.”

Lana immediately hid behind Emilio. “No.”

Carissa’s smile faded, replaced by quiet understanding.

Emilio rested a hand on Lana’s head. “I’ll stay with her.”

Carissa nodded and stepped out, closing the door softly behind her.

Emilio carried Lana to the bed and sat beside her.

The room darkened as evening settled. The curtains stirred in the breeze, and Lana flinched.

Emilio noticed at once. “What is it?”

She didn’t answer. Instead, she moved closer and wrapped both arms around him.

“If I let go...” she whispered, “...you’ll leave too.”

His chest tightened. “I’m not going anywhere.”

She searched his face for a moment before resting her head against his shoulder. She stayed there, holding on without a word.

Outside, Carissa stood in the hallway with Soren. He peered through the partly open door.

Inside, Emilio sat beside Lana, gently brushing her hair back. It was a side of him Soren had never seen.

“Will she stay here forever?” Soren asked quietly.

“I don’t know,” Carissa said.

“Is Papa staying here tonight?”

Carissa glanced into the room. “I think he is.”

Soren lowered his eyes. “When I had bad dreams... he didn’t stay.”

Carissa’s heart ached. She rested a hand on his shoulder. “Soren...”

He managed a small smile. “It’s okay.”

But Carissa knew it wasn't.

He turned and walked down the hall. She watched him go, then looked back into the room.

Inside, Lana’s eyes had finally closed. Even in sleep, her fingers remained wrapped around Emilio’s hand.

He didn’t move. Not even when his arm began to ache.

For the first time since leaving the Marcone estate, Lana slept without fear.

Emilio looked at the child his brother had entrusted to him. Whatever came next, one thing was certain.

As long as he lived, Lana Marcone would never face it alone.

  • When the Queen Forgot   The First Crack

The private hospital suite was quiet once more.Lana lay against the pillows, her skin still pale, her eyes heavy with the lingering effects of the sedative. Even in rest, there was tension in her face, like her mind refused to fully let go.Emilio had not moved from her side since she arrived. He watched her quietly for a moment, noticing how she kept fighting sleep.“You don’t have to stay awake,” he said at last, his voice low and steady. “The antidote is working. You’ll feel weak for a while, that’s all.”He adjusted the blanket over her shoulders with careful hands, an almost uncharacteristic gentleness. “Rest. I’ll be here.”Lana turned her head slightly toward him. The woman’s words from earlier still lingered in her mind, sharp and persistent, refusing to fade. She wanted to ask. The questions pressed against her tongue, but she didn’t.Instead, she gave a small nod. “Okay.”Across the room, Carissa had been watching in silence. After a moment, she stepped closer. “You’ve been

  • When the Queen Forgot   The Truth They Hide

Inside the ladies’ room, Lana’s breathing slowed as the sedative took hold. The world around her blurred at the edges, sound thinning into something distant and unreal. Her knees weakened, and she barely registered the moment her body gave in.Outside, the woman who had followed her in left without urgency. She straightened her posture, composed and unremarkable, and stepped back into the corridor. A passing guard gave her a brief, polite glance. She returned it with a calm nod and continued on her way.Within seconds, she was lost in the flow of guests. No one remembered her face.A faint, satisfied smile touched her lips as she disappeared into the crowd. Her task had never been to abduct Lana Vitale or to kill her. It had been simpler, and more dangerous. To plant doubt. A question that would not fade once it took root.Several minutes passed.Inside the ballroom, the orchestra shifted into a softer piece. Crystal glasses clinked, conversations rose and fell in elegant rhythm, and

  • When the Queen Forgot   Seeds of Doubt

The second waltz drifted through the ballroom beneath the crystal chandeliers, its gentle melody carrying couples across the polished marble floor.Nicolo led Lana with easy confidence. “Relax,” he said lightly.“I am trying,” she replied, though her shoulders remained tense. He glanced at her posture and chuckled. "You look like you're getting ready for a boxing match, not a dance. I value my life too much to get elbowed in the ribs.”She laughed. "Good. I'd hate to ruin a face that handsome."The joke eased the tension between them. Little by little, she stopped overthinking and let the music guide her. To her surprise, the steps came naturally. Her balance was steady, her timing effortless.Nicolo noticed it too. "You're a natural," he said.Lana shook her head. "I wouldn't go that far.""I would."After a moment, his gaze drifted across the ballroom. “You know... half the room has been watching you all night.”Lana frowned slightly. “No, they haven’t.”“They have,” he said simply.

  • When the Queen Forgot   Under the Chandeliers

The formal program dissolved into music and conversation. Servers moved effortlessly between tables, setting down the next course and refilling glasses as the ballroom settled into its next rhythm.Around the hall, guests rose to greet old acquaintances, introduce business partners, and exchange quiet words beneath the glow of crystal chandeliers. For the first time that evening, Lana finally allowed herself to relax.Beside her, Ida leaned in, eyes wide as she took in the room. “I’m afraid to touch anything.”Lana smiled faintly, still watching the movement around them. “You’ll be fine. Just don’t sit there starving.”Ida lowered her voice. “I keep thinking I’ll pick up the wrong fork and embarrass myself.”“You won’t.”“How do you know?”“Because you’re overthinking it,” Lana said simply.Ida glanced at the table setting again. “I’ve never seen this many forks in my life.”Lana gave a soft laugh. “Start from the outside and work your way in.”“And here I was wondering if it was the

The convoy made its way through the heart of San Aurelio beneath the glow of the evening lights.Inside the second vehicle, silence settled naturally.Lana sat with her hands folded on her lap, watching the familiar streets pass beyond the tinted window. From here, the city felt different, quieter, more distant, as though she were seeing it from a new perspective.Beside her, Soren sat quietly, his attention shifting between the road ahead and the security vehicles reflected in the side mirror. In the front passenger seat, Ida glanced back now and then, curiosity written across her face. She was eager to see the gala and the people they were about to meet, but for once, she kept her questions to herself. After several minutes, the convoy slowed. The Aurelius Grand Ballroom came into view. The Aurelius Grand Ballroom stood at the heart of the university like a symbol of tradition and prestige. The day of the Founder’s Gala arrived without ceremony, but the Vitale estate felt it immediately. From early morning, the household was already in motion. Staff crossed the marble corridors carrying garment bags, sealed jewelry cases, and fresh floral arrangements. Security teams coordinated routes and timing with Rocco. Nothing was rushed, yet nothing was idle either. The Founder’s Gala at St. Aurelius University was not an ordinary university event. It was the institution’s most prestigious annual tradition, an evening that honored its founding, its benefactors, and the families who shaped its influence across the country. For the Vitale family, attendance was not optional. It was expected.Breakfast was served in the sunlit dining room overlooking the eastern gardens. Morning light spilled across the long table, softening the formality of the setting.Emilio sat at the head of the table, tablet in hand, occasionally reviewing reports as he sipped his coffee. Carissa sat beside him
