Chapter 3

Author: Raine Linden
The next time Celeste contacted me, I had just finished the second round of treatment. My head was still foggy when the call came in, and it took a moment before her voice registered on the other end, cool and clipped.

"Company dinner. I'm sending you the address."

That was all she said before she hung up.

I stared at the dark screen for a long time, not quite able to process it. This was the first time in five years that she had reached out to me on her own.

Her company held a staff dinner every three months as a perk for the employees. Celeste always brought Kieran.

My pulse picked up, and I felt something close to excitement for the first time in a long while.

When I arrived at the restaurant, the server at the front barely glanced at me.

"Mr. Hartley? Ms. Kendrick is in the private room at the end of the hall."

The corridor was quiet. The sound of laughter only reached me when I got to the last room.

When I pushed the door open, every voice cut off at once, and every pair of eyes in the room locked on me. The urge to turn and leave hit me immediately.

I scanned the table and spotted Celeste right away, seated at the head. Kieran was beside her.

There was no seat saved for me.

I stood there for a while before finally taking the only empty chair, tucked away in the far corner.

"What are you sitting around for? Have a drink."

Kieran's comment loosened the strange tension in the room by a few degrees. A couple of employees knocked back their drinks and started getting bold.

"Ms. Kendrick, you and Mr. Vance are always together. What is it about him that you like?"

That single question set off a wave of gossip around the table. Someone even shot me a pointed look.

Celeste did not hold back, as if I were not even in the room. "Kieran and I have known each other for over ten years. Having him come on as my director makes me happy. As for what I like about him, I suppose it's that he's always been there."

Someone whistled the moment she finished, and the teasing started bouncing around the table.

They all knew Celeste was married. They all knew about the situation between us, and whether it was to suck up to her or simply because they found it entertaining, every question they lobbed felt like it was designed to humiliate me.

Celeste treated me like I was not there for the entire evening.

I understood now why she had asked me to come. She just wanted to watch me squirm.

I kept my head down and stared at my plate, my grip tightening around my utensils.

When the conversation turned to what Kieran liked to do, Celeste answered without a second of hesitation.

"He likes to travel. We've been to Nordvik, Altenbach, and the Faerholme coast together."

I already knew that. While they were off on their trips, I had been swallowing pills and scrolling through Celeste's photos like a fool.

"What about Mr. Hartley?"

The question landed on me out of nowhere. Every head in the room turned my way, and I looked up dazedly, locking eyes with Celeste.

One of the employees who had been stirring things up grinned at me. "You've been married to Ms. Kendrick for so long. You must know what she likes, right?"

I opened my mouth. The words caught in my throat. My mind felt like it was wrapped in fog. I tried to search for those memories, but it was as if they had all slipped away.

"I forgot."

Celeste's expression darkened instantly. She set her glass down on the table hard enough to make a sound, and the room went quiet.

It was Kieran who broke the silence, raising his glass in my direction with a casual tilt. "Not everyone can keep track of everything she likes. Don't give him a hard time. Here, have a drink. Don't kill the mood."

A few people who knew both of us exchanged glances, looking like they wanted to say something but held back.

"Isn't he allergic to alcohol?"

Kieran looked surprised and glanced over at Celeste. "Is that true?"

Celeste's brows furrowed, and she looked away. Her voice was hard and cold. "I forgot. Just drink it, Everett. Stop ruining everything."

I looked at her. My fingers were numb, and my head felt like it was splitting open. I picked up the glass and drained it in one go.

Almost the instant I swallowed, Celeste shot to her feet, her face white. "Are you out of your mind, Everett?"

Three months passed before I saw Celeste again. At first, I treated her like a stranger. When she got persistent, I nearly called the police. Without my memories, nothing she said could reach me."You really don't remember me, Everett? I'm your wife. We've been married for five years."It was only when she said that that the single remaining reminder in my phone came back to me. Celeste Kendrick was my wife, and we needed to get divorced.I met her eyes."Are you here to sign the papers? I've already signed the divorce agreement. Let's just go through the process."Celeste stood frozen. The color drained from her face. "Why would you want a divorce? You love me more than anything."Three rounds of electroconvulsive therapy had taken my memories, but they had not made me stupid. I gave her a thin smile."According to my notes, the person you love is Kieran Vance. You hate me. You hate me for leaving you alone at our wedding."The version of me that existed before the surgery cho

Everett's POV:During the procedure, everything between Celeste and me flashed through my mind, one moment after another, like a reel playing in fast forward. Then, it all began to disappear. From the very first time I saw her, I had wanted to be with her. However, when I learned that Celeste came from a wealthy, powerful family where she had never lacked anything, the gap between us settled over me like a weight. The courage I had felt started to shrink. She was surrounded by exceptional people wherever she went, and I could not imagine someone like her ever looking twice at someone like me.Yet just as I was about to give up, Celeste came to me instead. She was radiant and fearless back then."I heard you like me, Everett, so here's your chance. Do you want to be with me or not?"Everyone around us said the same thing. Relationships between people from different worlds never lasted, but Celeste and I lasted three full years. Then, we got married. We both believed it would stay

Kieran came to see Celeste several times over the following days."I know Everett's missing, but the most important thing right now is to file a police report. Maybe he's doing what he's always done, just trying to make you worry."Part of Celeste wanted to believe that. Instinctively, she almost chose to believe it because she could not bring herself to face the reality that Everett wanted to end their marriage. He loved her so much. There was no way he would actually go through with a divorce. She held on to that thought and agreed with Kieran, but she still did not stop looking.Kieran told her, "If you want to find Everett, trust me. He wants a divorce, so make him come say it to your face."The words struck something in Celeste, and suddenly, it all seemed so obvious. She had been calling Everett for days, and every call went unanswered. Every message she sent had been blocked. However, both parties needed to cooperate for a divorce to happen. If she used divorce as an excus

Celeste took a deep breath and told her driver to take her home. If the doctor was right and Everett had finished his third round of treatment, then he should already be there. She rushed to the apartment and threw the door open, but Everett was nowhere in sight. Without stopping, she went straight to the bedroom and found a set of divorce papers sitting on the nightstand that had not been there before. She was not home often, and when she did come back, she never stayed long. The papers caught her off guard, but part of her still believed this was just Everett throwing a tantrum. She opened the agreement. His name was already signed.Inside was a note.'Celeste, I've already signed the divorce papers.'You were right to call me a liar. But this time, I really am going to forget you. I underwent electroconvulsive therapy. I'm not lying this time.'I don't want to drag this out anymore. We're both free now. I hope you and Kieran will be happy.'Celeste's eyes burned. The words

The shoot wrapped quickly. Celeste said a brief goodbye to Kieran and told her driver to head to the hospital. She wanted to see Everett. She had leaked the wedding portrait shoot to him on purpose, just to see if it would make him panic, if it would make him come. She had even sent him the address. However, the shoot was already over, and Everett never showed. What kind of man would let his wife take wedding photos with another man and do nothing about it? The thought gnawed at her.She told herself she would just look in from the hallway. One glance would be enough. No matter how much she pretended otherwise, she still needed to know he was all right. When she arrived at the hospital, Celeste went straight to his room in her heels, but the bed was empty. The room had been cleared out.She stood in the doorway for a long time, and her heartbeat gradually slowed. However, before she could steady her breathing, a passing doctor stopped."Excuse me, are you Mrs. Hartley?"Celeste

Third-Person POV:Celeste stared at the phone after the call was cut off, the sound of the doctor's voice still lingering in her ears. She did not understand.Everett was having surgery. What kind of surgery? All he had done was drink and trigger an allergic reaction. The doctor had said he was fine. There was no reason for anything else to be wrong. She told herself that and let out a slow breath, but the unease in her chest would not go away.Kieran noticed her distraction and walked over, draping an arm around her shoulder. "What's wrong?"Celeste shook her head. "Nothing. I'm just tired."After a pause, she added, "I have something to take care of once the shoot wraps."Kieran did not press her. He just nodded.Celeste sat in the chair in her wedding dress, waiting for the next set to begin. However, Everett's face surfaced in her mind without warning. The night before their wedding, he had not slept at all."Once this wedding's over, everyone's going to know we're toget
