Chapter 2

Author: Raine Linden
I shook out a handful of pills and shoved them into my mouth, forcing them down dry. The bitterness spread across my tongue. I sank back into the couch, tipped my head against the cushion, and stared at the ceiling without moving.

Celeste had always believed that I had lied to her, that I had betrayed her.

Five years ago, at our wedding, I had walked out in front of everyone. I left her standing there alone and turned her into a joke across the whole of Mayworth City.

That night, she grabbed me by the collar and screamed until her voice broke.

"You did that on purpose, didn't you? You wanted to humiliate me."

I tried to explain, over and over.

"My mom was old, and she lived so far away. I never planned for her to come to the wedding. But she came on her own without telling me, and on the way there, the tractor she was riding flipped. She didn't make it."

It did not matter what I said. She would not hear a single word of it.

She pulled off her wedding ring and hurled it at the wedding portrait hanging on the wall. The frame crashed to the floor, and the glass shattered on impact. A shard even caught my face.

Celeste stared at me through bloodshot eyes, her smile cold and thin. "You're still lying to me. I should've listened to Kieran and stayed away from you. They were right. You came from nowhere, and you just married me for the money."

She turned away and wiped her eyes with the back of her hand. "I'll hate you for the rest of my life, Everett."

After that, it was exactly the way she said it would be. We destroyed each other.

After I walked out on our wedding, her first love came back to the country without bothering to hide it, and the two of them grew closer by the day. I became the punchline in every conversation.

"Everett Hartley. You know, the one who married Celeste Kendrick? He shouldn't have bothered. She doesn't even go home."

"Oh, and get this. Apparently, Celeste and Kieran getting back together is all thanks to Everett. He practically set them up himself."

Five years of marriage, and every time I tried to reach her, my call was routed to her company's front desk. All I ever got was the same line from the receptionist.

"Ms. Kendrick is busy."

Celeste never blocked me on any of her social accounts. Every post was deliberate, every photo curated. She knew I would see all of it. She wanted me to understand that she was doing just fine without me.

The worst it ever got between us was three weeks after my mother died. Between Celeste's hostility and the weight of losing my mother, everything that had been pressing down on me finally crushed me. I broke down completely.

I called Celeste's number again and again.

"Please, just let me talk to her. I'm begging you. Please help me."

The receptionist's voice was cold and faintly disgusted. "I'm sorry, Mr. Hartley. Ms. Kendrick has a very full schedule."

The line went dead, and after that, the number would not connect at all.

I destroyed everything in the apartment that I could get my hands on. When I looked down at the broken pieces scattered across the floor, I picked one up without hesitation and dragged it across my wrist.

In the end, it was the housekeeper who found me and rushed me to the hospital.

When I woke up, Celeste was sitting beside my bed. Her gaze drifted to the bandages around my wrist, and there was nothing in her expression but indifference.

"Is this really the best way you can think of to get my attention? It's getting pathetic. Next time, cut deeper. And if you want to die, do it somewhere I don't have to deal with it."

She stood up and turned to leave. I reached out and grabbed her sleeve with what little strength I had.

"I wasn't lying to you. Everything I told you was the truth. Please, don't do this to me."

She shook my hand off and looked down at me. "Whether you lied or not doesn't matter to me anymore. I came here to tell you that I fired the housekeeper because of you. Is this just what you do? Ruin everyone who gets close to you?"

The side effects of the medication hit all at once. My chest tightened until I could barely breathe, and all I could do was gulp down air in shallow gasps. My vision blurred and dimmed.

Sleep like this was the only kind that did not bring nightmares.

  • Where I Stood Waiting   Chapter 10

Three months passed before I saw Celeste again. At first, I treated her like a stranger. When she got persistent, I nearly called the police. Without my memories, nothing she said could reach me."You really don't remember me, Everett? I'm your wife. We've been married for five years."It was only when she said that that the single remaining reminder in my phone came back to me. Celeste Kendrick was my wife, and we needed to get divorced.I met her eyes."Are you here to sign the papers? I've already signed the divorce agreement. Let's just go through the process."Celeste stood frozen. The color drained from her face. "Why would you want a divorce? You love me more than anything."Three rounds of electroconvulsive therapy had taken my memories, but they had not made me stupid. I gave her a thin smile."According to my notes, the person you love is Kieran Vance. You hate me. You hate me for leaving you alone at our wedding."The version of me that existed before the surgery cho

Everett's POV:During the procedure, everything between Celeste and me flashed through my mind, one moment after another, like a reel playing in fast forward. Then, it all began to disappear. From the very first time I saw her, I had wanted to be with her. However, when I learned that Celeste came from a wealthy, powerful family where she had never lacked anything, the gap between us settled over me like a weight. The courage I had felt started to shrink. She was surrounded by exceptional people wherever she went, and I could not imagine someone like her ever looking twice at someone like me.Yet just as I was about to give up, Celeste came to me instead. She was radiant and fearless back then."I heard you like me, Everett, so here's your chance. Do you want to be with me or not?"Everyone around us said the same thing. Relationships between people from different worlds never lasted, but Celeste and I lasted three full years. Then, we got married. We both believed it would stay

Kieran came to see Celeste several times over the following days."I know Everett's missing, but the most important thing right now is to file a police report. Maybe he's doing what he's always done, just trying to make you worry."Part of Celeste wanted to believe that. Instinctively, she almost chose to believe it because she could not bring herself to face the reality that Everett wanted to end their marriage. He loved her so much. There was no way he would actually go through with a divorce. She held on to that thought and agreed with Kieran, but she still did not stop looking.Kieran told her, "If you want to find Everett, trust me. He wants a divorce, so make him come say it to your face."The words struck something in Celeste, and suddenly, it all seemed so obvious. She had been calling Everett for days, and every call went unanswered. Every message she sent had been blocked. However, both parties needed to cooperate for a divorce to happen. If she used divorce as an excus

Celeste took a deep breath and told her driver to take her home. If the doctor was right and Everett had finished his third round of treatment, then he should already be there. She rushed to the apartment and threw the door open, but Everett was nowhere in sight. Without stopping, she went straight to the bedroom and found a set of divorce papers sitting on the nightstand that had not been there before. She was not home often, and when she did come back, she never stayed long. The papers caught her off guard, but part of her still believed this was just Everett throwing a tantrum. She opened the agreement. His name was already signed.Inside was a note.'Celeste, I've already signed the divorce papers.'You were right to call me a liar. But this time, I really am going to forget you. I underwent electroconvulsive therapy. I'm not lying this time.'I don't want to drag this out anymore. We're both free now. I hope you and Kieran will be happy.'Celeste's eyes burned. The words

The shoot wrapped quickly. Celeste said a brief goodbye to Kieran and told her driver to head to the hospital. She wanted to see Everett. She had leaked the wedding portrait shoot to him on purpose, just to see if it would make him panic, if it would make him come. She had even sent him the address. However, the shoot was already over, and Everett never showed. What kind of man would let his wife take wedding photos with another man and do nothing about it? The thought gnawed at her.She told herself she would just look in from the hallway. One glance would be enough. No matter how much she pretended otherwise, she still needed to know he was all right. When she arrived at the hospital, Celeste went straight to his room in her heels, but the bed was empty. The room had been cleared out.She stood in the doorway for a long time, and her heartbeat gradually slowed. However, before she could steady her breathing, a passing doctor stopped."Excuse me, are you Mrs. Hartley?"Celeste

  • Where I Stood Waiting   Chapter 5

Third-Person POV:Celeste stared at the phone after the call was cut off, the sound of the doctor's voice still lingering in her ears. She did not understand.Everett was having surgery. What kind of surgery? All he had done was drink and trigger an allergic reaction. The doctor had said he was fine. There was no reason for anything else to be wrong. She told herself that and let out a slow breath, but the unease in her chest would not go away.Kieran noticed her distraction and walked over, draping an arm around her shoulder. "What's wrong?"Celeste shook her head. "Nothing. I'm just tired."After a pause, she added, "I have something to take care of once the shoot wraps."Kieran did not press her. He just nodded.Celeste sat in the chair in her wedding dress, waiting for the next set to begin. However, Everett's face surfaced in her mind without warning. The night before their wedding, he had not slept at all."Once this wedding's over, everyone's going to know we're toget
