Chapter 1

Author: Raine Linden
Everett's POV

Celeste Kendrick had taken her first love, Kieran Vance, to the Faerholme coast to chase the northern lights and to Lake Corvin to watch swans glide along the water. This time, she had chartered an entire yacht for him, with fireworks that lasted through the night, all to celebrate ten years since they first met.

My fingers hovered over the screen. I swallowed the bitterness rising in my chest and reached for the consent form the doctor had been about to put away.

"I'll sign it."

Signing it took nearly everything I had left.

The doctor took the form, glanced at it, then looked back at me with an expression I could not quite read. "You're not going to talk this over with your family first? There's a real chance you'll forget all of them."

I shook my head slowly and tugged my sleeve down to cover the needle marks scattered across the back of my hand. "No. She doesn't need to know."

I went into the operating room, and when I woke up, the first round of treatment was over. My head felt heavy and slow, and the doctor went over his instructions before I left.

"Try to go over your old memories whenever you can, and keep taking your medication. I'm worried that if you don't, you'll end up forgetting who you are."

I nodded, picked up a new prescription for sleeping pills, and went home.

When I got there, my hand rested on the door handle for a long time before I could turn it. The door was unlocked. Light seeped out through the gap.

Celeste was home.

I was surprised. By my count, she had not been back in over a month.

She heard me come in and turned to look, her brows furrowing as she took me in. "It's been a few days and you already look like death. Are you doing this on purpose to make me feel bad?"

My hands stilled in mid-air. Something sharp twisted behind my ribs.

I set the pill bottle on the table and noticed the cake sitting on the dining table. It looked familiar, but I could not remember ordering one.

When I said nothing, Celeste stood up from the couch. "Don't think doing all of this is going to make me forgive you."

Everything she said had a bite to it, but today, none of it was making sense.

"What do you mean?"

She did not answer. She just stared at me. "The receptionist told me you called today. What did you need? I was busy."

The fog in my head cleared in an instant. I thought of the photos she had been posting, and something about the whole situation suddenly struck me as pathetic.

"Busy doing what? Taking trips with Kieran? Watching fireworks with him? Or were you too busy sleeping with him?"

Celeste's face went white, the kind of fury that came from being caught. "What the hell is that supposed to mean, Everett Hartley?"

I opened my mouth to respond, but before I could get a word out, a sharp pain tore through my shoulder. Kieran had walked in behind me and slammed into me hard enough to knock me sideways.

He draped an arm over Celeste's shoulder. The marks on her neck had not faded yet. The sight of them burned.

"I told you there was no point coming back just for him. He calls you multiple times a month anyway. It's just for attention, yet you actually fell for it. You came all the way back here for nothing."

Kieran's voice was light, almost bored. Yet Celeste believed every word he said. She always did.

The room went still.

She let out a cold laugh, and before I could react, she grabbed the cake off the table and shoved it into my face. Frosting smeared across my skin and dropped to the floor in clumps.

I stood there, frozen. The ache in my chest spread outward through my limbs, and the ringing in my ears grew louder. Celeste was still shouting, but her voice had blurred into something I could barely make out.

"You've always loved playing the victim, Everett, but now, you're playing mind games too? When did you learn to be such a liar? Oh, wait. You've always been one. You lied to me five years ago."

Her eyes were red-rimmed, and her chest was heaving. Then, her gaze dropped to my wrists, and her eyes widened.

She grabbed my wrist and yanked the sleeve up. When she saw the dense scatter of needle marks across my skin, she froze for just a second before letting out a sharp, humorless laugh.

"This again."

Even Kieran sucked in a breath at the sight. He pulled Celeste behind him and murmured something to calm her down.

"Forget it. Don't let him get to you. I'll take you out for your birthday."

He took Celeste's hand and started toward the door. As he passed me, he slowed just enough to lean in, his voice low enough that only I could hear. "Look at yourself, Everett. What do you have left to compete with?"

The door slammed shut behind them, and they were gone.

It was only then, standing alone in the quiet, that I remembered. Today was Celeste's birthday. The cake she had smashed into my face was one I had baked for her myself the night before.

I had just forgotten.

I went to the bathroom and splashed water over my face again and again. When I finally looked up, the man staring back at me from the mirror was hollow-eyed with cheekbones jutting out. I looked like someone already halfway dead.

Three months passed before I saw Celeste again. At first, I treated her like a stranger. When she got persistent, I nearly called the police. Without my memories, nothing she said could reach me."You really don't remember me, Everett? I'm your wife. We've been married for five years."It was only when she said that that the single remaining reminder in my phone came back to me. Celeste Kendrick was my wife, and we needed to get divorced.I met her eyes."Are you here to sign the papers? I've already signed the divorce agreement. Let's just go through the process."Celeste stood frozen. The color drained from her face. "Why would you want a divorce? You love me more than anything."Three rounds of electroconvulsive therapy had taken my memories, but they had not made me stupid. I gave her a thin smile."According to my notes, the person you love is Kieran Vance. You hate me. You hate me for leaving you alone at our wedding."The version of me that existed before the surgery cho

Everett's POV:During the procedure, everything between Celeste and me flashed through my mind, one moment after another, like a reel playing in fast forward. Then, it all began to disappear. From the very first time I saw her, I had wanted to be with her. However, when I learned that Celeste came from a wealthy, powerful family where she had never lacked anything, the gap between us settled over me like a weight. The courage I had felt started to shrink. She was surrounded by exceptional people wherever she went, and I could not imagine someone like her ever looking twice at someone like me.Yet just as I was about to give up, Celeste came to me instead. She was radiant and fearless back then."I heard you like me, Everett, so here's your chance. Do you want to be with me or not?"Everyone around us said the same thing. Relationships between people from different worlds never lasted, but Celeste and I lasted three full years. Then, we got married. We both believed it would stay

Kieran came to see Celeste several times over the following days."I know Everett's missing, but the most important thing right now is to file a police report. Maybe he's doing what he's always done, just trying to make you worry."Part of Celeste wanted to believe that. Instinctively, she almost chose to believe it because she could not bring herself to face the reality that Everett wanted to end their marriage. He loved her so much. There was no way he would actually go through with a divorce. She held on to that thought and agreed with Kieran, but she still did not stop looking.Kieran told her, "If you want to find Everett, trust me. He wants a divorce, so make him come say it to your face."The words struck something in Celeste, and suddenly, it all seemed so obvious. She had been calling Everett for days, and every call went unanswered. Every message she sent had been blocked. However, both parties needed to cooperate for a divorce to happen. If she used divorce as an excus

Celeste took a deep breath and told her driver to take her home. If the doctor was right and Everett had finished his third round of treatment, then he should already be there. She rushed to the apartment and threw the door open, but Everett was nowhere in sight. Without stopping, she went straight to the bedroom and found a set of divorce papers sitting on the nightstand that had not been there before. She was not home often, and when she did come back, she never stayed long. The papers caught her off guard, but part of her still believed this was just Everett throwing a tantrum. She opened the agreement. His name was already signed.Inside was a note.'Celeste, I've already signed the divorce papers.'You were right to call me a liar. But this time, I really am going to forget you. I underwent electroconvulsive therapy. I'm not lying this time.'I don't want to drag this out anymore. We're both free now. I hope you and Kieran will be happy.'Celeste's eyes burned. The words

The shoot wrapped quickly. Celeste said a brief goodbye to Kieran and told her driver to head to the hospital. She wanted to see Everett. She had leaked the wedding portrait shoot to him on purpose, just to see if it would make him panic, if it would make him come. She had even sent him the address. However, the shoot was already over, and Everett never showed. What kind of man would let his wife take wedding photos with another man and do nothing about it? The thought gnawed at her.She told herself she would just look in from the hallway. One glance would be enough. No matter how much she pretended otherwise, she still needed to know he was all right. When she arrived at the hospital, Celeste went straight to his room in her heels, but the bed was empty. The room had been cleared out.She stood in the doorway for a long time, and her heartbeat gradually slowed. However, before she could steady her breathing, a passing doctor stopped."Excuse me, are you Mrs. Hartley?"Celeste

Third-Person POV:Celeste stared at the phone after the call was cut off, the sound of the doctor's voice still lingering in her ears. She did not understand.Everett was having surgery. What kind of surgery? All he had done was drink and trigger an allergic reaction. The doctor had said he was fine. There was no reason for anything else to be wrong. She told herself that and let out a slow breath, but the unease in her chest would not go away.Kieran noticed her distraction and walked over, draping an arm around her shoulder. "What's wrong?"Celeste shook her head. "Nothing. I'm just tired."After a pause, she added, "I have something to take care of once the shoot wraps."Kieran did not press her. He just nodded.Celeste sat in the chair in her wedding dress, waiting for the next set to begin. However, Everett's face surfaced in her mind without warning. The night before their wedding, he had not slept at all."Once this wedding's over, everyone's going to know we're toget
