Chapter 3

Author: Coconut Scared of Cold
Their approach was professional and systematic. First, they hook you with a sweet deal. Then, they trigger your anxiety. Finally, they swoop in with the perfect solution.

It was a textbook fear-marketing scam.

Suddenly, my phone buzzed again.

Chloe’s name flashed on the screen.

Chloe’s anxious voice burst through the receiver. “Mom! The people from the Caring Hearts Center just called me. Look, Leo and I really aren't comfortable with you being completely alone in that house. I already went ahead and signed you up for that dollar-a-day plan. It’s only thirty bucks a month, and I'm paying for it!”

“What gave you the right to sign me up for anything?” I hissed, trying to keep my voice steady, though a furious heat was already rising in my chest.

We knew nothing about these people. What if it was a total setup?

“Mom, can you please stop being stubborn? It is literally thirty dollars a month. Just look at it as paying someone to keep you company, and it’s not even coming out of your pocket.

“The staff, Joe, said this plan is designed specifically for seniors living alone, and tons of families use it. Neither Leo nor I live close by. Just let me spend a little cash to buy myself some peace of mind, okay?”

I sucked in a sharp, cold breath.

“Chloe, listen to me. I already told you that the place is sketchy. Letting them inside my house is the equivalent of handing them my keys and a blueprint of the layout. If something happens...”

Chloe replied coldly, “Mom, can you stop turning literally everything into a conspiracy theory? You thought the free pack of pasta was a trick, but they gave it to you anyway, right? You thought the registry form was a trap, but what bad thing have they actually done since then? What proof do you even have?”

My jaw dropped, but no words came out. I didn't have a single shred of hard evidence.

Chloe continued, “Mom, you’re retired. You don't have to fight scammers anymore. You don't have to live every single day looking over your shoulder. Can't you just relax and let yourself be taken care of for once?”

Her last words were choked with sobs.

I fell silent.

Through the line, I heard her sniffle, and then Leo's voice broke in.

He said softly, “Mom, Chloe’s just worried about you. We talked it over, and starting next week, we’re going to take turns coming back home every weekend to check on you. So that investigation of yours... Can you just drop it?”

I said, “I don't need you two rotating shifts to watch me. You both have your own jobs, your own lives to live.”

Chloe chimed in and said, “Then accept the dollar-a-day companion. It's one or the other. Either you let them visit, or we alternate weekends. You choose.”

To them, I was clearly just an old, paranoid lady with too much free time, acting as a constant drain on their energy.

I let out a heavy sigh before saying, “Fine. I'll do the companion thing.”

“Seriously?” Chloe asked in surprise.

I said, reassuring them, “Seriously. Don't drive up here every week. It’s too exhausting for you guys. Just come visit once a month.”

On the other end of the line, both of them let out an audible sigh of relief.

As I hung up the phone, my mind was already spinning with a new plan.

If the people from the Caring Hearts Center were so desperate to get inside my house, I was going to beat them at their own game.

The next morning at exactly eight-thirty, the doorbell rang.

I pulled the door open to find a young man in his mid-twenties, wearing a bright red volunteer vest.

“Hi, Mrs. Parker! I'm Joe Williams from the Caring Hearts Center, and I'll be handling your daily wellness checks starting today.” He flashed a blinding, perfectly practiced smile and gave a polite, well-rehearsed little bow.

I stepped aside, gesturing for him to come in.

As he stepped into the doorway, his eyes darted across the living room, taking in every corner with a rapid, calculated sweep.

Then the questions began. He asked what medications I kept in the drawers, how many times a day I took them, what time I went to sleep, and whether I ever got up in the middle of the night.

“None of your damn business,” the man with the buzz cut spat back. Frank let out a cold, sharp laugh. “Fine. Take him away.” The man glared at me. “You wait, old lady. You’ll pay for this.” The officers shoved him out the front door. Frank turned back to look at me. “Helen, don’t let a word of what he said get to you.” “I’m not,” I said with a faint smile, “I’ve been hearing threats like that for decades.”… At eleven o'clock that night, Bernice sent me a text message. [Mrs. Parker, we got Evelyn. She was right at the address Joe gave us. She was literally packing her bags to flee to another hideout when we cornered her. I’ll keep you updated tomorrow. Get some rest.]The court sentences finally came down. Arthur got seven years and four months. As Joe cooperated and turned over the evidence, his sentence was reduced to two years. As for the criminal mastermind, Evelyn’s case was handled separately. The police were still actively hunting down the scammed funds. Tw

I arrived at the coffee shop five minutes early and found a seat by the window.I instantly recognized the guys at two of the nearby tables. They were Frank’s plainclothes backup.Right at three o'clock, Joe walked through the door.…He was wearing a mask, scanning the room the second he stepped inside. The moment his eyes locked onto me, he hurried over, slid into the seat across from mine, and yanked the mask down to his chin.My breath caught in my throat.Joe had lost a terrifying amount of weight. His cheekbones jutted out, and his eyes were sunken deep. He looked like a completely different person. A nasty bruise discolored the back of his hand.“Thanks for coming, Mrs. Parker,” he said, his voice raw and scraping. He dropped his voice to a frantic whisper. “I'm just going to give it to you straight. The mastermind behind all of this is Evelyn Summers. She has a master's degree in psychology. She used to teach at the university before she ran the business.“She designed

Frank opened his mouth, wanting to say something, but he just let out a heavy sigh instead. “Helen, you’re seriously putting me in a tough spot here.” “Just tell me yes or no.” Frank relented. “Fine. But you have to promise me, no confronting these people alone.”“I promise.” Bernice reached into her bag, pulled out an envelope, and slid it over to me. “Mrs. Parker, inside here is the contact info for the Financial Crimes Unit, along with my personal cell number. You can call me day or night. Also...” She reached into her bag again and produced a small, black device. It looked like a standard USB drive, only much flatter. “This is a covert voice recorder. One-touch activation, eight hours of battery life. Keep it on you. If you ever end up in another situation like the one with Arthur, you can use this to secure evidence.” I took it from her and examined it closely. “This gadget is lightyears ahead of the clunky gear I used back in my day.” “Times change,” Bernice said

Frank exchanged a look with the female detective. She reached into her bag, pulled out a thick folder, and spread it open across the coffee table. “Mrs. Parker, take a look at this first,” she said. I slipped on my reading glasses, flipping through the pages one by one. Frank leaned forward, pointing to the third page. “The real mastermind is right here.” Staring back at me from the third page was a photograph of a woman in her forties. Below the picture, a name was printed in bold – Evelyn Summers. “Evelyn Summers has a master's degree in psychology and used to teach at a university, specializing in geriatric psychology. Five years ago, she quit her teaching job to go into business. “Since then, she's registered seven different companies. Their operations are all identical – senior care services, health consulting, and selling medical equipment to the elderly.”Frank continued, “Our preliminary investigation shows that over the past three years, she's opened identical com

Arthur’s face went pale.He said to Joe, “Open it.”Joe hesitated for a second, then walked over and clicked the lock open. Two people stood in the doorway. One was a young rookie cop in a crisp blue uniform. The other was Frank.Frank was in plainclothes, but the gun clipped to his hip and the police badge on his chest said it all.His eyes scanned the room and landed straight on me. He looked me up and down, checking for injuries. Once he saw I was okay, he looked away."Who's in charge here?" the rookie cop asked, stepping forward.Arthur forced a smile back onto his face and rushed over. “That would be me, Officer. Is there a problem?”“We got a call about a disturbance.”Arthur played innocent. “A disturbance? Oh, no way. We're a legitimate business. These two ladies...” Then, he pointed at me and Brenda. “There was just a little misunderstanding. We were actually just sorting it out. You guys got here at the perfect time. Maybe you can help us mediate?”Frank comple

I pushed the door open and stepped into the center. Brenda was sitting in a chair across the counter, her eyes bloodshot. Two men stood hovering over her. One was Joe, and the other wore a nametag that read General Manager, Arthur Vance. Brenda saw me, and a fresh wave of tears instantly spilled down her face. “Helen! Thank God you’re here! If I can't get this money back, I’ll never be able to look my daughter in the eye again!” Arthur dragged a chair over, sat down, and casually crossed one leg over the other. “Look, it isn't a matter of us refusing to issue a refund. You’re the one breaking the contract unilaterally. If you want out, fine, but you have to pay a penalty of 60% of the contract value.” “Eighteen hundred dollars?” Brenda's voice choked up, turning sharp with sheer panic. “I paid three thousand dollars, and you’re only giving me twelve hundred back? What about the equipment? Can't I just return it?” Joe added, his tone turning hostile, “Mrs. Hill, you alre
