Chapter 1-He was absent.

作者: Deer Woods
Holding her swaddled daughter, Lucille Sandwell kept her voice steady, though a hint of hope slipped through. "Gideon, today is our daughter's one-month milestone. Can you come pick us up?"

On the other end, Gideon Prescott's voice remained even and unreadable. "Something came up. I'll have the driver bring you and the baby home."

He was always busy with work. He had missed the birth and her entire first month postpartum. Now the baby was finally a month old, and he still could not make it.

A dull ache spread through Lucille's chest, but she fought back her tears. "All right. I understand."

"Lucy, you've always been independent. I'm sure you can handle something as small as giving birth on your own. Keep it up. You're the best mom." Then Gideon hung up.

His encouraging, managerial tone stung like a needle.

Just then, Howard Quinn, one of Gideon's close friends, called. "Lucy, something came up tonight, so I can't make it to the baby's one-month party at Starcrest Hotel. Sorry about that. Congratulations on your baby boy!"

Lucille froze in confusion. 'The baby's one-month party? Baby boy?'

She was about to ask more, but Howard had already hung up.

A second later, her phone chimed.

Howard sent a photo of a luxury baby gift set with a quick text: "Can't make it to the party tonight. But sent this over for the little guy. Congrats again!"

Less than a minute later, the message and the photo were unsent.

He quickly followed with a voice message apologizing, then flooded her with more than a dozen apologetic stickers. "Sorry, Lucy. I got it wrong. You're not the one who had the baby."

Lucille stared at the string of ingratiating emojis and sensed something beneath them.

A terrible suspicion took shape in her mind.

At 11:00 a.m., Lucille arrived on time outside the top banquet hall at Starcrest Hotel in Coasthaven City. She wore a black down coat, with a hat and mask hiding most of her face.

The entrance buzzed with noise and foot traffic. A large baby poster stood by the door. It read: Baby Connor Westbrook's One-month Party.

None of the arriving guests looked familiar.

Lucille let out a breath. Maybe she had frightened herself for nothing.

She turned to leave.

Then a familiar voice sounded behind her. "You're still recovering. Be careful. Let me carry him. I've got a big gift ready for him later."

Lucille stopped cold. She spun around and saw a man a short distance away taking a chubby, fair-skinned baby from a woman's arms.

That man was Gideon, the husband who had all but disappeared for an entire month.

The blood in Lucille's body seemed to freeze. She stared, unable to believe what she was seeing.

Then the woman spoke in a soft, girlish voice. "Giddy, you've been so good to me and baby Connor. You stayed with me through the whole pregnancy, cooked for me, waited outside the delivery room the entire time, and even looked after me every single day while I was recovering. When Otto gets back, he'll be so grateful for everything you've done for us."

"You're my cousin. Otto is my best friend. He's not here, so taking care of you is the least I can do," Gideon claimed.

It felt as if a bullet had torn straight through Lucille's heart.

Lucille stood frozen. Her chest ached so intensely it felt torn open. Cold spread through her from head to toe.

'So for nearly a year, Gideon hadn't been busy with work at all,' Lucille thought bitterly. He had been taking care of his best friend's wife, his own cousin, Rayne Sullivan.

Laughing and chatting, the two of them carried the baby into the banquet hall.

A text came through. Lucille looked down numbly. It was from Gideon.

Gideon: [Keep it up. Be a strong mother. Once I finish my work tonight, I promise I'll be home tomorrow.]

Lucille stared at the message, then thought of how he had warmly and attentively hovered over his cousin moments earlier. The irony struck hard.

Her finger brushed the screen, and older messages scrolled up one after another.

Gideon: [You're already eight months pregnant and still finished the Sage Tower design for Coasthaven on schedule. You really are amazing. You deserve praise.]

Gideon: [Five months already? Pregnancy really seems easy for you. You're nothing like those other women who act delicate. I'm proud of you.]

Gideon: [You move around just fine every day, and you don't even have morning sickness. A heavier workload shouldn't be a problem. Keep it up. I trust your judgment most on the design draft.]

The truth was that Lucille had gone through everything other pregnant women experienced: morning sickness, swollen feet, spikes in blood pressure and blood sugar, and even occasional fainting spells. She had endured it all.

However, Gideon's steady stream of praise and encouragement had kept her going. She had gritted her teeth and pushed through pregnancy and labor, never taking more than two days off at a time.

Deep down, she had questioned it before. He treated her like a subordinate, not a wife. There was none of the tenderness or care a husband should show.

But that had always been their dynamic, and she had grown used to it. He treated everyone that way. At least, that was what she had believed.

That was until now.

She had just watched him carefully take a baby from another woman's arms. She had just heard that low, gentle voice. She had just seen him hold that woman by the waist, steady and attentive, as if afraid she might stumble.

Only then did Lucille finally understand. He did know how to care for someone. The person he cared for simply was not her.

The moment the truth settled in, it felt as if her heart had been torn open. The pain was blinding.

Without realizing it, Lucille began to walk.

She followed the flow of guests into the banquet hall. She needed to see for herself what kind of surprise her husband had prepared for another woman and her child.

Lucille couldn't help teasing, "What, are you waiting for the hospital director to come have you arrested?"Joanne laughed. "Right now? I'd like to see who'd dare."Lucille raised an eyebrow. "Well, that's some confidence. Let me guess. Did you reconnect with a powerful old flame while you were in Asthrala?""Oh, get out of here." Joanne gave Lucille a mock-offended shove, but there was something deeper beneath her playful tone. "You and I have been through years of hardship. Things are finally starting to turn around."Lucille heard it and realized she didn't need to ask another question. She already knew the answer. She nodded, the weight of everything they had endured over the years washing through her all at once. "Mom. For the rest of your life, you don't have to endure anything for anyone else. You don't have to keep burying everything until it turns into breast cancer."No one in this world is ever going to treat us that way again. Everything this world has put us through,

Lucille did not know whether to laugh or cry.'How did my mother make one trip to Asthrala and come back more energized than I am, talking even more recklessly? She saw her daughter collapsed on the floor, sobbing, then turned to Lucille and Joanne standing shoulder to shoulder. Her eyes immediately reddened.Wendy jabbed a finger at Joanne's face and screamed at the top of her lungs, "How dare you, Joanne! You hit my daughter, didn't you?! Do you two have any respect for the law? I'll have you both arrested tonight!"Where is your hospital director?! Get him out here right now and have him call the police! This woman is being charged with assault! The corridor cameras don't lie. She isn't walking away from this!"She wore an expensive f

Hearing the commotion in the corridor, Lucille walked to the doorway and looked outside. She saw Rayne half-crawling, half-running after Otto, who never looked back.He left her with nothing but the cold, unwavering sight of his retreating figure. Without a single glance in her direction, he stepped into the elevator and disappeared.Rayne collapsed onto the floor, sobbing so violently that she looked as though she had completely fallen apart. She looked like a woman abandoned by the entire world. The commotion drew everyone in the VIP ward into the corridor. Doors opened one after another as curious faces peeked outside.Aware that every eye was on her, Rayne forced herself together. She staggered to her feet, pulled her baseball cap low, and tugged her mask over her face. After making sure no one could recognize her in such a wretched state, she started walking. She had taken only three steps when her gaze met a pair of icy, unblinking eyes.Rayne froze. "Mom!" It was the most relieved word Lucille had spoken in a very long time."Hey!" Joanne's raspy voice boomed through the room at full volume. The next second, they were wrapped in each other's arms, holding on as though no distance had ever separated them.Even through Joanne's coat, Lucille felt it. Where her mother's chest should have been, there was a hollow space, a piece that was gone. The tears came before she could stop them."Mom, you..." She looked at her mother, her eyes filled with everything she could not say. A thousand words lodged at the back of her throat, yet not a single one escaped.Joanne burst into a bright, carefree laugh. She gave a quick spin in front of Lucille. "What's there to cry about? Your mother is just fine. I went through a little ordeal, and now I've come back stronger."Don't worry. The surgery went better than expected. Better than they projected. That's why I got out early. I came to see my granddaughter."Lily! Lily, sweetheart, Grandma'

"Tell me exactly what happened that day," Lucille said. When Nancy saw that Lucille wasn't going to punish her, her breathing gradually steadied. She gripped the hem of her jacket and said, "They wanted to come to the house, but I told them I'd been instructed not to reveal where we lived, and they didn't press the issue. So we met at the nearby mall."Mr. Prescott was so happy to see Lily. He picked her up right away and held her, and he couldn't stop kissing her face. He finally handed her back after she wet herself and started crying."It didn't take long. We had a simple meal together, and then I brought Lily home."Nancy finished her account in one breath.Lucille's heart pounded. Gideon had been in and out of the hospital constantly over the past several days. The last time she had seen him, he had been coughing dryly every so often.'If he had already been carrying a virus, and he kissed Lily so many times…' She thought it through, then caught something else in Nancy's ac

"So the baby's fever has come down a bit. She's currently at 100.4 degrees. Given how young she is, the doctor recommends admitting her for observation. If you agree, please come with me so we can complete the paperwork."The word "admitting" made Lucille's knees go weak."Is it... Is it serious? How is she right now? Is she going to be all right?"The nurse saw her distress and softened her voice. "It's not critical. We've been seeing a lot of cases lately where little ones catch a virus and develop recurring fevers. We're recommending admission so we can monitor her closely and provide the care she needs. She's doing reasonably well at the moment, so try not to worry."Lucille wiped the cold sweat from her forehead and agreed. On the way to the admissions desk, something kept nagging at her.Lily almost never left the house.
