Chapter 2

Autor: Perfect Timing
When we arrived home, Lauren took Mason and Cayden upstairs while I stayed downstairs, forcing myself to calm down for half an hour.

The moment I walked through the door, I found her feeding Cayden strawberry tips.

"Have a few of these to hold you over, Cayden. I'll make you something nutritious later so you can get your strength back. Your arm is already bruised from the blood draw. Seeing it just breaks my heart."

Afterward, she casually tossed the half-eaten strawberries onto Mason's plate.

My heart clenched at the sight.

All the moments I had overlooked in the past suddenly came flooding back.

Lauren had always favored Cayden. I had repeatedly asked her to treat the boys equally, but she never listened. I assumed she spoiled him because he was the younger one, so I didn't make an issue of it.

But the truth was, she loved Cayden more because he was another man's son.

If she showed such blatant favoritism over little things, there was no telling what else she had done when it came to anything important.

That night, I waited until Lauren was asleep before entering the study.

Her computer password was easy to guess. It was Cayden's birthday.

Two folders sat on the desktop, one for each boy.

When I opened Mason's folder, I found only a handful of photos. Frowning, I clicked on Cayden's folder next.

The computer froze for several seconds before the screen filled with countless meticulously organized files. They documented every competition Cayden had entered, every award he had received, and all the plans Lauren had made to secure his future.

The stark contrast between the two folders made my blood boil.

The most recent file contained a group photo of Cayden wearing a uniform at an overseas summer camp.

Last month, Lauren had asked me for 50,000 dollars. Since it wasn't a small amount, I asked what she needed it for, but she snapped impatiently, "We work hard so our kids can experience the world! Can't you spare your sons this opportunity?"

I gave her the money, never realizing that she would spend every cent on Cayden.

That same day, Mason had remained in the city because Lauren had enrolled him in a life-skills class where he was taught household chores.

I drew a deep breath, continued scrolling, and clicked on a video that hadn't been placed in a folder yet.

Cayden sat proudly on a horse while Mason ran alongside him. Mason's little legs pumped as fast as they could, but he still couldn't keep up with Cayden's pony.

Once Cayden grew tired of playing, he tossed the riding crop at Mason.

"You lost, so you can't come back to my house today!" he said.

Mason replied timidly, "But it's my house, too."

Lauren's voice came from behind the camera, "You're the older brother. You should be setting an example, not competing with Cayden over everything! The house is in Cayden's name, so it belongs to him. You're only living there because he lets you. Do you understand?"

I froze as a terrible realization struck me.

Rushing to the safe, I pulled out the property deeds and discovered that both homes were now registered in Cayden's name.

My mother had passed away two years ago, leaving me our current home and a smaller house in a decent school district. Lauren and I had agreed that each boy would receive one of the properties when they became adults.

Behind my back, however, she had transferred both properties to Cayden.

My hands trembled uncontrollably. The more I thought about everything Mason had endured, the more my eyes burned with tears.

Just then, a notification chimed on my phone, interrupting my thoughts.

The post had been updated again.

Despite the flood of angry comments, Gregory wrote, "Say whatever you want. I'm going to see my son tomorrow. I'm taking my son and my childhood friend's wife on a camping date. He can stay home and take care of that idiot son of his!"

I gripped my phone tightly as my mind reeled.

By the time Mason woke up the next morning, the house had already been emptied out.On the way to school, he looked up at me and asked, "Daddy, don't we have to wait for Cayden?"I gently ruffled his hair and smiled. "No. We won't have to wait for him anymore."I left the divorce entirely in my lawyer's hands. When everything was settled, Lauren walked away with 10% of our assets and custody of Cayden. All the properties that had previously been registered in Cayden's name were transferred back as well. I immediately had them placed under Mason's name instead. On the day we went to court to finalize the divorce, Lauren asked, "You don't even want to see me anymore, do you?"I regarded her calmly, but my thoughts suddenly drifted back to the day I had discovered Gregory's post.I remembered secretly taking Mason and Cayden in for paternity testing and how nervous Lauren had been the entire time. When the results finally came back, the last of my composure had shattered. I coul

After taking Mason out for dinner, I brought him home and found Lauren still there. She cautiously poked her head out of the kitchen when she heard us come in. "I warmed up some milk for you two. Have some before bed."Her voice was gentler than I had heard it in years. She even brought the milk over and carefully placed a glass in Mason's hands.Ever since we got married, Lauren had barely set foot in the kitchen, much less warmed up a glass of milk for Mason before bed.Mason held the glass in both hands and looked at me uncertainly. My brows immediately drew together. I took the glass from him and poured the milk down the sink."He's lactose intolerant! How do you not know that?" I snapped.Keeping my anger under control, I sent Mason back to his room to sleep. As soon as he was gone, Lauren came up behind me and wrapped her arms around my waist. Her voice trembled with emotion."Honey, it honestly slipped my mind. I'll learn from my mistakes. I promise I'll be the best mo

"I can't believe you had the nerve to cheat on me."Elliora Jones was dressed in a tailored suit, her lips pressed into a hard line."So, that's why you've been trying every excuse in the book to stay here. You kept telling me it was because you wanted to help take care of my parents, but really, you just wanted to stay close to your old flame, didn't you?"Gregory panicked. Clutching his cheek, he stammered, "H-Honey, when did you get back? This isn't what it looks like. I can explain!"I scoffed inwardly.Gregory and I had known each other for more than 20 years, and he had always thought he knew me well. Apparently, that was why he had felt comfortable sleeping with Lauren right under my nose. But that worked both ways. I knew him just as well as he knew me.It hadn't taken much effort to find his wife's email address through social media. Once I had it, I sent her Gregory's post along with the paternity test results."Everything you have, from the clothes you wear to the ho

"He's the one who came after me," Lauren insisted. "I don't know what came over me, and I made a mistake."Several people had already warned Gregory that he was about to be blacklisted from the industry. He sank into a chair, looking utterly defeated. Upon hearing Lauren's accusation, however, he pointed at her with a sneer."What did you just say? I came after you?"Lauren stared at him stubbornly, her eyes wide.Gregory gave a cold laugh. "What about all those times you called me in the middle of the night and told me to come downstairs to your apartment? You didn't seem to think I was seducing you then. "And when Henry went away on business, who invited me over and had me stay at your place for three straight days? Was that my idea, too?"Then, he turned to me with a mocking smile."You still don't know the whole story, do you? The truth is, she and I were already into each other on your wedding day. While you were passed out drunk, your bride was in the guest room with me

The words slipped out of Lauren before she could stop herself. The second she realized what she had said, she clamped a hand over her mouth. "Honey, why didn't you ever tell me you were capable of pulling something like this?"I stared at her in silence.Lauren had changed after we got married. She stopped caring about my job or anything else going on in my life. The only time she ever showed any interest was when she wanted me to send her money, and even then, all I got was a complaint."Why is your paycheck so low this month?"I had always assumed raising the kids was exhausting her. Instead of blaming her, I blamed myself for not earning enough to give her and the boys a more comfortable life.If I hadn't seen Gregory's post, I might still be completely in the dark, busting my ass to support another man's woman and raise his kid for him.The thought of what had happened to Gregory seemed to send Lauren into a panic. She dropped to her knees with a thud and wrapped her arms ar

The video showed Lauren and Gregory acting intimately at the campground. The room erupted in an instant."They've been attached at the hip all day. I honestly thought they were married to each other.""They're not even trying to hide it. They're hooking up right under Henry's nose.""What kind of childhood friend sleeps with your wife and then tricks you into financing his company?"The investors' faces hardened. Without exchanging a word, they moved behind me and confronted Gregory."Trust comes first in any business partnership. We won't work with someone we can't trust. After what we've just seen, withdrawing our investments is the best decision for everyone involved."Once they pulled their funding, Gregory's company would collapse within days, and he would become a laughingstock.Panic immediately set in, and he tried to slander me."We've been friends for years. Whatever problems we have should be settled in private. You can't pull your investment over a personal dispute
